Someone asked Him, 'Lord, are they few in number who are to be saved?' — Luke 13:23 Wouldn't you like to know what percentage of people go to heaven? If we knew only two percent went to heaven, we
would either be inspired to become holy or be thrust into despair. If we knew ninety percent went to heaven, we'd feel
more secure. Jesus refused to answer the question concerning how many would be saved. He did say, however, that many "will try to enter
and be unable" (Luke 13:24). He also said that "few" find the narrow gate that leads to eternal life (Matthew 7:14). He uses the word "few"
again in the parable of the wedding banquet. "The invited are many, the elect are few" (Matthew 22:14). This doesn't tell us exactly how many
will go to heaven, but it can be disconcerting and certainly keeps us from the sin of presumption.
Countless faiths have pondered the idea of who will be saved. What about those who have never heard the Gospel? Do all I have to be is a
good person? Our Lord is pretty clear—simply being a good person will not get you into heaven. Being a good Christian will help get you to
heaven, but not even being a good Christian will work alone. We need God’s grace.
All this talk of a “narrow door” is a bit unnerving! What matters is to act; to do courageously all that lies within our power to enter heaven.
Live an authentically Christian life, where it doesn't matter if what we do is noticed or not. Attend Mass, receive our Lord in Holy
Communion, have our sins forgiven in confession. Ultimately we will all face God. We can steer ourselves in any direction we choose.
As students return to school, I’m reminded of a story from the East. An elderly sage was educating his young disciples about life. It tells of a
dreadful battle that goes on in every person between two great lions. One lion is wicked: he is fear, rage, jealousy, sadness, greed, pride,
self-pity, shame, hatred, weakness, lies, rivalry and superiority. The other lion is good: he is happiness, harmony, love, trust, sharing, peace,
modesty, gentleness, compassion, friendship, understanding, charity, truth, kindness and loyalty. He was asked; “which lion will win?” The
answer: 'The one you feed the most.' Which of the two lions within you do you make the strongest?
Homebound, nursing home and hospital visits: Anyone wishing to arrange a pastoral visit from me should contact me. None of the area
hospitals or nursing homes are allowed to contact the parish for legal reasons (confidentiality). I am most happy to make a pastoral visit for
anointing, prayer and reception of Holy Communion. I can only visit if I know your wishes. Please let me know!
Missing a sacrament? Are you or someone you know not baptized, confirmed or have not had their marriage
blessed in the Church? If you are in need of one or more sacraments, please contact me at [email protected].
Not Catholic and want to know more about the Catholic Faith? See Fr. Jim for more information.

your faith with others, but don’t feel qualified? Know someone who wants to know more about the Catholic Church?
Come join us on Tuesday evenings. Two great additional ways to learn about your faith are to listen to Catholic radio and watch Catholic TV.
Both available locally.
