From Father Thom

The three tenors Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti were performing together in Los Angeles. A reporter asked them about rivalry among

them, and they said there was none. But the reporter was not satisfied and kept coming back to the issue of rivalry among the three superstars. Then Domingo explained, “You have to put all of your concentration into opening your heart to the music. You can’t be rivals when you’re together making music.” As Christians are, we called to be rivals or are we called to make music together? In January we celebrated the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, more simply known as Christian Unity Week. That the different Christian churches together agree to set aside one week for intensive prayer and action in view of Christian unity shows that they all feel the need for more unity among believers in Christ. The World Christian Encyclopedia has documented 34,000 different Christian denominations. The figure keeps rising. Many Christian churches today spend much of their resources not in spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth but in fighting and cannibalizing other Christian churches. To maintain their identity and show that they are distinct from other Christian churches, they emphasize their differences rather that the things they have in common. They fight each other and forget that as Christians we are called to make music together in the world. This is a misunderstanding of what Christianity is all about, as Paul tells us Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. The varieties of gifts God gives to His daughters and sons for the common good, we have selfishly used as grounds for rivalry. As a parent, how do you feel when you bring home gifts for your children as a way of making the whole family happy, and they start a fight. Imagine then how God feels at the way His children are using His gifts as cause for sibling rivalry and violence. And God has a very large family with many, many

children. The disunity and infighting among Christians is an abuse of God’s gifts. It is a scandal to the world. It is a sin for which we all need to repent. Many people feel uneasy when they hear of Christian unity. They fear that Christian unity means putting everyone into the same mold, the same form of worship, the same way of serving God. No, Christian unity is not Christian uniformity. God gives His children varieties of gifts. Some are more intellectual and love to spend hours reading and reflecting of the Word of God, others are more charismatic and would rather sing praises, pray in tongues, shout alleluia and make a joyful noise to the Lord, and yet others are more service oriented and would rather spend their time helping the sick and feeding the hungry. Paul encourages us to engage in different services and ministries because we have different spiritual gifts. But he warns that we should not be so engrossed in the various works we do for the Lord, that we forget the one Lord of the work. In the various services we see diversity, in the one Lord we see unity. Christian unity, therefore, is a unity in diversity. The disunity in Christianity is a scandal to the world that we are called to bring to God. It is a scandal that weakens the Christian message and witness. What moral right have we to ask the world to reconcile their differences when we as Christians cannot reconcile our own differences? Let us today ask God’s forgiveness for all of God’s children for the sin of disunity. Let us pray for Christian unity, and resolve to extend a hand of reconciliation and friendship to our estranged brothers and sisters in the Lord. Lord, hear the prayers of your people and bring the hearts of believers together in your praise and in common sorrow for their sins. Heal all divisions among Christians that we may rejoice in the perfect unity of your Church and move together as one to eternal life in your kingdom. Amen.

Each year in February, the Church celebrates the Holy Sacrament of Marriage. In this time of Virtual Events, we invite you to email or call the Office at 412-373-0050 and register. We invite you to email us a picture of you from your wedding, or have your family take a photo of you holding your picture and include in the email the number of years married. We will post them to our website. Since the Diocese had to suspend its annual Golden Wedding celebration at the cathedral, we want to especially highlight those who are married 50 years or MORE!

Ash Wednesday Notes

Ash Wednesday is not a Holyday of Obligation, nor is the reception of ashes required of Catholics. Still, attendance at a Mass or Liturgy on Ash Wednesday is a dearly-held tradition of many Catholics. At Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish, we will conduct a number of liturgies on Ash Wednesday (February 17, 2021), in order to allow the faithful to gather for prayer and the distribution of ashes.

Recently, the Holy See in Rome addressed the question of the method of the distribution of ashes for 2021 on Ash Wednesday. They made a couple of modifications for this year, in light of the pandemic: • Here in America, we’re accustomed to receiving ashes on our forehead, in the form of a cross. Elsewhere

in the world (including in Rome!), ashes are sprinkled directly on the head on Ash Wednesday. This is an approach that is ancient in its origins, and is found in the Bible:

“Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the people of Israel were assembled with fasting and in sackcloth, and with earth upon their heads.” (Nehemiah 9:1)

“Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long tunic in which she was clothed. Then, putting her hands to her head, she went away crying loudly.” (2 Samuel 13:19)

In baptism, we are washed clean from original sin and anointed as “priest, prophet, and king” on the top of our head. It is fitting that ashes, a reminder of our sin and of baptism into death, be sprinkled on the crown of our heads, because at Easter, we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, the conquering of sin and death, and baptism into life.

This year, ashes will be sprinkled on the top of the head. We would ask that, as you approach the

minister, you bow your head so as to allow the sprinkling of ashes.

• Typically, as the ashes are being imposed on each person, the minister says “repent and believe in the Gospel” or “remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return.” This year, the minister will pronounce this reminder once, to the entire congregation – prior to the beginning of the distribution of ashes – and will distribute ashes in silence.

National Catholic Schools Week

Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2021 is January 31 – February 6. The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2021 is “Catholic Schools: Faith, Excellence, Service.”

Kindergarten Update

Kindergarten started back to school in January reading about the birth of their savior Jesus! They completed a craft where the students cut out and glued the manger and hay on paper and placed baby Jesus in the soft bed. This was a follow up activity to the season of Advent. The students are researching Arctic animals this month in their science class. They are reading non-fiction books and then writing their own informational texts of what they learned. Word building has been a fun part of their language arts

class. The students enjoy using play-doh to make letters and sight words. They write these words in sentences and put them in ABC order. In math class they are continuing to read word problems and write their own addition and subtraction sentences to solve each question. The students really enjoy using a variety of manipulatives to act out each problem to solve it.

FEAST OF FAITH: I Confess One form of the penitential rite at the beginning of Mass is the traditional Confiteor, or “I confess,” a prayer that was formerly prayed by the priest alone at the foot of the altar, but which is now prayed by the entire assembly. The Confiteor is at once personal—“I confess”—and communal, prayed aloud, together. We recognize that sin does not

just separate us from God; sin comes between us and others, isolating us. We acknowledge that sin has many dimensions, individual and communal: sins of thought, sins of speech, sins of action, sins of omission. Sin is not

something that happens to us; sin is something we do. In the Confiteor, we take responsibility for our own actions. The repeated insistence on our “fault,” with the ritual gesture of striking the breast, an ancient sign of penitence, is not

meant to lower our self-esteem. Rather, it acknowledges our human instinct to transfer the blame whenever we can (“The devil made me do it!”). This prayer stops us short. We take responsibility for ourselves, our actions, our failure to

act. Then we cry out to God in those ancient words, Kyrie, eleison—Lord, have mercy. For the sinner who repents, there is mercy. This truth is at the heart of our faith, and it is where the Mass, our feast of faith, begins.

Homily

Profession of Faith

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
