Welcome and Notices The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford

We stand

Silence

In the name of the Father,

and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

The Children and Young People move to Children’s Space during the hymn

Hymn

Angel-voices ever singing

round thy throne of light,

angel-harps for ever ringing,

rest not day nor night;

thousands only live to bless thee

and confess thee

Lord of might.

Thou who art beyond the farthest

mortal eye can scan,

can it be that thou regardest

songs of sinful man?

Can we know that thou art near us,

and wilt hear us?

Yea, we can.

Yea, we know that thou rejoicest

o’er each work of thine;

thou didst ears and hands and voices

for thy praise design;

craftsman’s art and music’s measure

for thy pleasure

all combine.

In thy house, great God, we offer

of thine own to thee;

and for thine acceptance proffer

all unworthily

hearts and minds and hands and voices

in our choicest

psalmody.

Honour, glory, might, and merit

thine shall ever be,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

blessèd Trinity.

Of the best that thou hast given

earth and heaven

render thee. Words: Francis Pott (1832-1909)

Tune: Angel Voices CP377

Greeting

The Lord is with us.

Let us praise his name.

Acclamation

Come to me and listen to my words;

hear me, and you shall have life.

Come to me and listen to my words;

hear me, and you shall have life.

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;

the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the simple.

Hear me, and you shall have life.

The statutes of the Lord are right and rejoice the heart;

the commandment of the Lord is pure and gives light to the eyes.

Hear me, and you shall have life.

The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever;

the judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

Hear me, and you shall have life.

More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold;

sweeter also than honey dripping from the honeycomb.

Come to me and listen to my words;

hear me, and you shall have life.

Prayers of Penitence

The word of God is living and active.

It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

All is open and laid bare before the eyes of him

to whom we give account.

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith.

Silence

Let your faithful love come unto me, O Lord,

even your salvation, according to your promise:

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Your word is a lantern to my feet

and a light upon my path:

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

I have gone astray like a sheep that is lost;

O seek your servant, for I do not forget your commandments.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

May the God of love and power

forgive you and free you from your sins,

heal and strengthen you by his Spirit,

and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord..

Amen.

Merciful God,

teach us to be faithful in change and uncertainty,

we may enter the unfailing joy of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 45.22-end read by Susan Ibnouzaki

22 Turn to me and be saved,

all the ends of the earth!

For I am God, and there is no other. 23 By myself I have sworn,

from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness

a word that shall not return:

‘To me every knee shall bow,

every tongue shall swear.’

24 Only in the LORD, it shall be said of me,

are righteousness and strength;

all who were incensed against him

shall come to him and be ashamed. 25 In the LORD all the offspring of Israel

shall triumph and glory.

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Silence

We stand

Hymn

Spirit of God, unseen as the wind,

gentle as is the dove:

teach us the truth and help us believe,

show us the Saviour’s love!

You spoke to us – long, long ago –

gave us the written word;

we read it still, needing its truth,

through it God’s voice is heard.

Without your help we fail our Lord,

we cannot live his way;

we need your power, we need your strength,

following Christ each day. Words: Margaret Old (1932-2001)

Gospel Reading

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

Glory to you, O Lord

Luke 4.16-24 16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the

synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17and the

scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the

place where it was written: 18 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me

to bring good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives

and recovery of sight to the blind,

to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ 20And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes

of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21Then he began to say to them, ‘Today

this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ 22All spoke well of him and were

amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, ‘Is not this

Joseph’s son?’ 23He said to them, ‘Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb,

“Doctor, cure yourself!” And you will say, “Do here also in your home town the

things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.” ’ 24And he said, ‘Truly I tell you,

no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s home town.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

The Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Pastoral and Mission Development

Silence

We stand

Creed

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son

is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

Prayers of Intercession led by Alex McLelland

In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ,

let us pray to the Father.

After each section this, or an alternative, response is used:

Lord in your mercy

hear our prayer.

Merciful Father,

accept these prayers

for the sake of your Son,

our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Giving and Receiving Peace

Christ is our peace.

He has reconciled us to God in one body by the cross.

We meet in his name and share his peace.

The peace of God be always with you

and also with you.

We offer one another a sign of God’s peace

Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken

The gifts of the people are presented and the table set with bread and wine

Jesus calls us here to meet him

as, through word and song and prayer,

we affirm God’s promised presence

where his people live and care.

Praise the God who keeps his promise;

praise the Son who calls us friends;

praise the Spirit who, among us,

to our hopes and fears attends.

Jesus calls us to confess him

Word of life and Lord of all,

sharer of our flesh and frailness,

saving all who fail or fall.

Tell his holy human story;

tell his tales that all may hear;

tell the world that Christ in glory

came to earth to meet us here.

Page 11: The Cathedral Church · 2 Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching

11

Jesus calls us to each other,

vastly different though we are;

creed and colour, class and gender

neither limit nor debar.

Join the hand of friend and stranger;

join the hands of age and youth;

join the faithful and the doubter

in their common search for truth.

Jesus calls us to his table

rooted firm in time and space,

where the Church in earth and heaven

finds a common meeting place.

Share the bread and wine, his body;

share the love of which we sing;

share the feast of saints and sinners

hosted by our Lord and King. Words and Music: John L. Bell (b. 1949) and Graham Maule (b. 1958)

SP 218

Prayer of Preparation

Lord Jesus,

you nourish us at the table of your word

and the table of your sacrament;

as we feed on you, the bread of life,

may we daily grow into your likeness. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer Prayer A

It is indeed right,

it is our duty and our joy,

at all times and in all places

to give you thanks and praise,

holy Father, heavenly King,

Page 12: The Cathedral Church · 2 Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching

12

almighty and eternal God,

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.

For he is your eternal and creative Word,

through whom all things came into being;

the Word made flesh who dwelt among us,

full of grace and truth.

He fulfils the Law and the Prophets,

dying for our sins and rising again

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He stands among us in his risen power,

opening to us his living word,

and making himself known in the breaking of the bread.

Therefore with angels and archangels,

and with all the company of heaven,

we proclaim your great and glorious name,

for ever praising you and saying:

Accept our praises, heavenly Father,

through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ,

and as we follow his example and obey his command,

grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit

these gifts of bread and wine

may be to us his body and his blood;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed,

took bread and gave you thanks;

he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper

he took the cup and gave you thanks;

he gave it to them, saying:

Page 13: The Cathedral Church · 2 Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching

13

Drink this, all of you;

this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this, as often as you drink it,

in remembrance of me.

Therefore, heavenly Father,

we remember his offering of himself

made once for all upon the cross;

we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension;

we look for the coming of your kingdom,

and with this bread and this cup

we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord.

Jesus Christ is Lord:

Lord, by your cross and resurrection

you have set us free.

You are the Saviour of the world.

Accept through him, our great high priest,

this our sacrifice of thanks and praise,

and as we eat and drink these holy gifts

in the presence of your divine majesty,

renew us by your Spirit,

inspire us with your love

and unite us in the body of your Son,

Jesus Christ our Lord.

Through him, and with him, and in him,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

with all who stand before you in earth and heaven,

we worship you, Father almighty,

in songs of everlasting praise:

Blessing and honour and glory and power

Be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

We sit or kneel

Silence

The Lord’s Prayer

Being made one by the power of the Spirit,

as our Saviour taught us, so we pray:

Our Father in heaven

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion

Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us.

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

As the Lay ministers receive communion we sing

Hymn

Jesus, my Lord, my God, my all,

hear me, blest Savior, when I call;

hear me, and from thy dwelling place

pour down the riches of thy grace.

Jesus, my Lord, I thee adore;

O make me love thee more and more.

Jesus, too late I thee have sought;

how can I love thee as I ought?

And how extol thy matchless fame,

the glorious beauty of thy name?

Jesus, what didst thou find in me

that thou hast dealt so lovingly?

How great the joy that thou hast brought,

so far exceeding hope or thought!

Jesus, of thee shall be my song;

to thee my heart and soul belong;

all that I have or am is thine,

and thou, blest Savior, thou art mine. Words: Henry Collins (1827-1919) CP483

Tune: Melita CP413

Prayers after Communion

God of all grace, your Son Jesus Christ fed the hungry

with the bread of his life

and the word of his kingdom:

renew your people with your heavenly grace,

and in all our weakness

sustain us by your true and living bread;

who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us

with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ.

Through him we offer you our souls and bodies

to be a living sacrifice.

Send us out in the power of your Spirit

to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

16

We stand

Hymn

To God be the glory, great things he has done!

So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,

who yielded his life, an atonement for sin

and opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,

and give him the glory! Great things he has done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood!

To every believer the promise of God!

The vilest offender who truly believes

that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Great things he has taught us, great things he has done,

and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;

but purer, and higher and greater will be

our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see.

Words: Fanny Crosby

Tune: To God be the Glory CP609

Blessing

Christ the Son of God perfect in you the image of his glory

and gladden your hearts with the good news of his kingdom;

and the blessing of God almighty

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

Amen.

Dismissal

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

In the name of Christ. Amen.
