Altitudinal shift (70 m) of beech forest to the summit (1,700 m) of the Montseny mountain range in the last 55 years (Les Agudes i Sacarbassa). B: beech forest (Fagus sylvatica), H: scrub: heather (Calluna vulgaris) and juniper (Juniperus nana).

Cardedeu series (Pere Comas)

• Started by Pere Comas and continurd by Miquel Comas, from 1952 to 2005.

• Pere Comas observed 103 species of plants (out of leaves, flowers, fruit, and fall out of the leaf), the arrival of 6 migratory birds and the appearance of the 1st butterfly.

• It is one of the world's longest and most homogeneous series (Borroughs, 1992)

Catalan phenological history

• Provincial School of Agriculture: Xarxa meteorològica de la Granja Experimental (1896-1906)

• SMC: 1931 Catalan Comission of Agricultural Meteorology – Adopt the Resolution 79 of the Meteorological Conference in Copenhagen

(1919), urging the weather services to begin phenological observations – Adjust the latest European standards and choose the species observed – Study Note n. 63, published in 1936: "First results of the phenological

observations in Catalonia (1932-1935)"

• The Spanish Meteorological Service (Climatology Section) establishes the penology network of Spain in 1942


Current status: searching for Catalan series

Each one follows different criteria: - more or less phenophasses - different codification - compartmentalization

• Birdwatching societies (Ornitological Catalan Institute) • CBMS (Catalan Butterfly Monitoring Scheme) • Technical schools of agronomy and agricultural engineering, specific associations • Research institutes (INCAVI, IRTA, botanical gardens ...) • AEMET (Spanish Meteorological Service)


We need to develop phenological observations in Catalonia

• Study the climate • Carelessness of AEMET • Protect the legacy of the past • Preserve our phenology heritage
