Linux OSLow adoptionFreeSuperior in customization, security and reliability (Ebert, 2008)

RQ:How is Linux OS perceived by users in terms of usability, integration of functionality and need for technical support in educational institutions?

UsabilityThe effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction specified when users achieve specific goals in a particular environment (Bevan, 2009)

IntegrationExamined from the Graphical User interface – the ability of user to control software application or hardware device at their own disposal.

Quantitative studyTarget Population and Data Size

The target population = 14 undergraduate and graduate students from two intermediate information systems course at a Midwestern university Each participant was familiar with the use of either OS Participant ages ranged from 18-30 years old

Used System Usability Scale (SUS)10 questions, 5-point Likert scale

Page 9: The Case for Ubuntu: Linux Operating System Performance and Usability for Use in Higher Education in a Virtualized Environment

44% of users considered Ubuntu GUI features not complex22% found the system not easy to use, while 56% where undecided78% of the participants strongly disagreed that they would need the support of a technical person to be able to use the systemNo respondents disagreed that the functions of the system were well integrated55% reported that they felt very confident with using the system and didn’t need to learn a lot of things to get going with the system77% disagreed with the statement that there was too much inconsistency in the Ubuntu system
