At last count, 324 homes, barnsand ancient inns in New England andcertain Middle Atlantic States weredisplaying a little sign that says“George Washington slept here.” Wefind this disturbing. We have alwaysthought of The Father of Our Countryas a vigorous, aggressive leader and, ifthis is true, he may in fact have dozedthrough the entire Revolutionary War.One suspects that the aphorism credit-ed to Benjamin Franklin (“Early tobed, etc.”) was inspired by GeneralGeorge. Either that or he went to bed,got up and did it again several times anight. Of course, we have our ownSleeping Giant right here in Carmel:JACK LONDON. We have run into noless than 9 homes which claim to bethe short-term residence (and bed-room) of Yukon Jack. We saw no rea-son to doubt this until we discoveredthat he died in 1916, and most of thesehouses were built in the early 20s. Ofcourse, it’s possible that Jack, beingthe rugged outdoorsman he was, spread out his bedroll on thesegrounds and slept. Whatever... statis-tics can be misleading, and our onlypurpose is to set the record straight.
