“Education is our passport to thefuture, for tomorrow belongs to thepeople who prepare for it today.” Annual Convocation for the CBS andBBA-B Com Batch 2016-19 was heldon 26 May 2019, with traditional lamplighting by Dr. Ashok K Chitkara,Hon’ble Chancellor and Dr. MadhuChitkara, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor,along with the esteemed guests.

Ms. Anannya Khera (BBA) and Ms.Harkirat Kaur (B.COM) receivedthe Academic Excellence Awardsfor being first in their respectivebatches. Hon’ble VC mama andpresent dignitaries gaveimportant advice to the studentson their future professional andcareer paths.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP ATWALT DISNEY WORLD


What can be better then working as an intern at WaltDisney!! The Walt Disney World College Programme is anational paid-internship program owned and operated bythe Walt Disney Company, and it can also give everyone adistinct advantage in becoming a part of Disney's uniqueculture and diverse community. 22 students from BBA-B.COM department, CBS got selectedand had an amazing opportunity to be a part of thisinternship from the month of May to August,2019. Thestudents were placed under different categories likeBusiness and Finance Analytics, Marketing and Sales,Animation and Media and many more. This internship alsohelped students in learning a lot about the outer world.

SEMESTER EXCHANGE PROGRAM


At BBA-B.Com department webelieve in giving the students thebest of opportunities. one suchopportunity was for Hartik Punshi,Manav Arora and Vani Kapoor, whotravelled all the way to Heidenheiman der Brenz, Germany for semesterexchange program at DualeHochschule Baden-Württembergwhere in they studied a range ofmodules upon InternationalBusiness Practices

A group of students was given anopportunity to study at Emnormandie, France for a semesterwhere in they were exposed tovarious people from variouscommunities and culture. The students had a wonderfulexperience where in they learnt awhole new dimension aboutmanagement across cultures andalso made some unforgettablebonds and memories.

Friendship Day was celebrated on 5thAugust by the students. Each class had apresentation through a slide show,showcasing personal traits or funnypictures of each student. Students werethen asked to guess and recognize eachother. Students also wrote somethingabout each one and read it out, askingthe class to guess the person.

A picture speaks a thousand wordsand one such event calledPictionary was organized byInternational Toastmasters Club forBBA-B.COM Department (CBS). Theactivity was to speak about thegiven picture and describe as muchas they could.


This event also aimed at helpingstudents in improving theirspontaneous thinking, confidence,leadership skills, and reasoning. MrShivaansh (BBA Batch 2018-21) stoodout as the 'Best Speaker'; whileNishchay & Satakshi were placedsecond and third, respectively.

SUMMER SCHOOL ATUNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM, MALAYSIA


In July 2019, The University of NottinghamMalaysia organised a summer school forinternational students, in which seven studentsof the BBA & B.COM Department participated.The summer school started on 02 July and endedon 17 July. Throughout the summer school, thestudents participated in classes as well activitiesorganised by the University. The Program startedwith a cultural night, in which all the studentsfrom international grounds wore their culturaloutfits and represented their culture. The firstsession of the summer school was aboutintroduction to Asian Values and Business. Thestudents also went to Melaka City, where theywere given a cultural tour of the ethnic villagesof Malaysia. Students were accompanied by twofaculty members of the department for thissummer school programme at University ofNottingham, Malaysia.

A Guest Lecture on “RecentTrends in Cost Accounting”.Was organized by BBA-B.COM Department on 23rdJuly, 2019. The speaker wasMr. Munish Jindal, CEOHoverRobotix. Mr. MunishJindal highlighted therecent developments incost identification and costmanagement of varioushigh-tech industries. Theguest lecture was followedby an interactive sessionwith the students.

ORIENTATION

MARSHMALLOWCHALLENGE

With a new zeal and a new session, wewelcomed a new set of scholars into ourBBA - B.Com Department. The orientationprogram commenced with briefings byour Dean and other dignitaries from theuniversity. Dr. Madhu Chitkara, vicechancellor; spoke about the universityvalues and assured all that they were atthe right place for education.

Are you confused about thesepictures and thinking what are thesepeople trying to do with the sticks? Itis an international challenge and iscalled “The Marshmallow Challenge”.Given 20 spaghetti sticks, one yard ofthread, and tape and a single piece ofmarshmallow to be on the top, all thestudents in groups tried hard to makea tower. Many succeeded, while somefailed and a lot more were leftawestruck with each other’screativity. This activity boosted teambuilding, creativity, logical thinkingand time management.


TELL A JOKE DAY

Is there a better day to be filledwith laughter than the “Tell aJoke Day”? Perhaps none! TheTell a Joke Day is celebrated on 16August each year. Seagulls andstudents organised activities inall classes, where the studentsshared many funny jokes,anecdotes, punchlines and one-liners. It was a fun filled andentertaining session that lefteach and every one of us relaxedand laughing to bits.

“A good teaching is a quarterpreparation and balance theatre”.Standing true to this quote thisteachers day the dean and faculty ofthe Chitkara Business School, tookpart in the University level ‘TeachersDay Celebrations’ on 05 September.Some of the faculty members walkedthe ramp on the Bollywood retrotheme. The day was spent in honoringthe faculty and remembering themaster teacher – Dr Saravapalli Radhakrishnan.


FRESHERS 2019 The moment we walk through the gate ofthe University on the very first day, all of usaspire to become the Mr. or Ms. Fresher. TheDepartment attempts to ensure that everystudent enjoys this precious moment ofhis/her life. This year the Fresher’s Party (Batch 2019- 2022) was filled with gamesand amazing performances by the newbatch. Students walked the ramp to bag themost coveted title of Mr. and Ms. Freshertoo. Mr Aarnav and Ms Shreya were declaredMr. and Ms. BBA while Mr Dipin and MsYamini were crowned Mr. and Ms. B.Com.

BATTLE OF TRADE


The department has persistently strived toprovide its students with the best ofknowledge and experience to enhancetheir risk-taking abilities. This isexperiential learning, to enable them tobrain storm and enjoy doing an activity.The B.Com students were plunged into livestock market as seasoned traders. Allattempted to make maximum profits fromthe stocks and thought and acted like thereal trading maestro.

GLOBAL WEEK


The world is becoming a global village with every passing day.Many of our students go abroad on semester exchange orsummer programs, but to give exposure to a maximum student,Chitkara University organises a global week. Many globalprofessors come to the university for a week, and teach ourstudents for a week. The students too got this unique exposurefrom 14 global professors in various domains in Oct 2019.

"The secret of getting ahead is gettingstarted." The academic year 2019 commencedwith the true spirit of entrepreneurship.Our first semester students organised"Apni Mandi" with great enthusiasmand planning. It provided a platformand assisted in channelling theirpassion into professionalism.


APNI MANDI

The task focused on procurement ofproducts from NGO's and sell these in theuniversity during the fest via adoption ofbest sales and marketing strategies. Thefaculty supervised and judged the eventalong with the global delegates. This alsobrings in corporate social responsibility bygetting items from the adopted villagesand selling these as goodwill gesture tothe local artisans.

SPORTS EVENT ATIIT MANDI


From cricket to volleyball, football to basketballand badminton to table tennis, a three daysports event from 11th-13th October’19 wasorganised by IIT, Mandi. 12 universitiesparticipated in this event. Teams from ChitkaraUniversity also participated in which RahulKukreja and Santa Singh (Batch 2018 - 2021)were a part of cricket team from BBA - B.ComDepartment. Chitkara University was unbeatablein maximum games and won the overall trophy.


TAYLOR'S CUP

Taylor's cup brings the bestsportsperson-ship in all participatingstudents and faculty. From Football toBadminton, Arm Wrestling to RelayRace and Tug of War, this event wasobserved with a huge enthusiasm. Theevent was organised in November 2019.

VISIT TO SEBI CHANDIGARHSome of our B Com studentsvisited to Securities andExchange board of India (SEBI),Chandigarh, facilitated by DrRajit Verma, Associate professor.The session was conducted byMr. Prabhakar, Deputy GeneralManager, SEBI, who elaboratedon various functions and aspectsof SEBI. He discussed the role ofSEBI in managing andpreventing financial frauds.Students actively participated inQ&A round and finally the talkconcluded by vote of thanks.


GUEST LECTURE ON FINANCIALMANAGEMENT : A SAGA OF SUPPLY CHAIN

MANAGEMENT

The Department conducted asession on “Financial Management:A Saga of Supply ChainManagement” on 28 November forthe students of BBA batch 2018-21.CMA Anil Sharma, Chairman NIRC-CMA and Practicing CostAccountant, delivered his talk withlive examples from Industries.


He gave insight of industry with theimportance of supply chainmanagement and making use of fundsin an optimum manner. He also sharedhis experiences about the value ofmoney and time consideration whiledetermining the working capital in totalsupply management.

YOUNG THINKERS' CONFERENCE 2019

The Young Thinkers' Conference 2019was organized by the British DeputyHigh Commission, Chandigarh atIndian School of Business, Mohali on 17October 2019. 10 students from BBA -B.Com, attended the conference asrepresentatives of the department andUniversity. The conference comprisedof two panel discussions on the topics"Strengthening Multiculturalismthrough Soft Power Diplomacy" and"Para Diplomacy-DecentralizedDimension to Foreign Policy". Eachpanel consisted of five panellists andtheir discussions were followed byquestions from the audience. It was alearning experience for the studentson the nuances of foreign relations.


CAPITAL MARKET PROGRAM IN MUMBAI

This time around 14 B. Com Batch 2017-20students went for Capital Market Program to theBombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Institute,Mumbai. This Program provides educationallearning as well as practical exposure aboutworking of the financial markets. In thisprogram students complete their fifth and sixthsemester at the BSE Institute, and earn theiradditional certification from the BSE Institute.


INTERNATIONAL SIGNLANGUAGE DAY God makes all human beings with some orother special powers. The necessity for us isto recognise that in all of us. The studentsthe department observed the SignLanguage Day on 23 September, along withthe International week of the HearingChallenged and the facts related to thesame. Students played Dumb Charades andattempted to live a challenged life andunderstand the meaning of sign language.


GIRL CHILD DAY

DIABETES DAY

International Girl Child Day is celebratedevery year on 12 October as an observanceday for the girl child. It is celebrated toincrease the awareness among peopleabout all the inequalities faced by the girlchild in the society. On this day Facultyand some students from Seagulls clubvisited Government Elementary School,Ram Nagar. A drawing competition wasorganised for students up to 5th class onthe same theme and prizes were given tothe winners. Various gifts were alsodistributed among all the participatingstudents.

14 November was celebrated as aDiabetes Day, to make studentsaware about the effects of diabetes.Diabetes is a silent killer disease,which generally is called a life-styledisease. The event aimed at makingstudents aware of their role in thehelping process of the diabeticpatients. To spread this message apower point presentation wascirculated and a discussion on thesame was done in every class.


NATIONAL POLLUTIONCONTROL DAY

HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

“Be a part of the solution, not the part ofpollution.” Standing by the means of this quote, theDepartment celebrated pollution control day bymaking their students aware of the dangers ofuncontrolled pollution. Each section hadpresentation on the same theme. Furthermore,each class was divided into groups and issueswere discussed in a small group setting.

“To deny people their human rights is to challengetheir very humanity.” On 10 December is a Human Rights Day, tocommemorate Universal Declaration of HumanRights in 1948. The department observed the dayin order to spread awareness about basic humanrights. Students were asked to discuss about thebasic fundamental rights and some case studiesbased on the violations of the rights.


A national conference was held on 14December at Gian Jyoti Institute ofManagement & Technology, Mohali. Thestudents of B.Com batch 2018-21, MsAanchal, Ms Anjali & Ms Samiksha, presenteda research paper in the conference on the‘Ethical issues in Taxation’ under theguidance of Ms. Gurpreet Kaur, AssistantProfessor. The paper and its delivery won apraise from the organisers.

16th NATIONALCONFERENCE


ETP AND STP VISITUNDER EVSMr. Balpreet Singh, and Dr. Shuchi Dawracoordinated a visit, and accompaniedstudents of First year to ETP Plant of NeelamHospital, Rajpura under EnvironmentalStudies Module to understand the disposal ofBio-Medical waste and how differentbusinesses are leveraging the logistics in thesame. Students were able to understand therole of government agencies andimplementation of government guidelines atthe grass root level by the hospital.


Also , under the EnvironmentalStudies Module, studentsaccompanied by Dr. ArchanaGoel and Dr. Priya visitedUniversity’s STP plant tounderstand sewage system ,and to have a betterunderstanding ofenvironmental pollutants andcleanliness.

FACULTY ACTIVITY

One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwalisymbolizes the spiritual “Victory of Light over Darkness, GoodOver Evil and Knowledge Over Ignorance.” The Departmentcelebrated Diwali with a great enthusiasm. The celebrationstarted with the lighting of diyas by all the Faculty members.Taking the celebration further, students organised various fungames which included rangoli making competition for thestaff. It was a refreshing activity for all.


FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS

Dr. Shilpi Gupta, Dr.Shuchi Dawra and Ms.Monika participated in aone day MDP onTransformation of HR,conducted on 29November, 2019 at CII,Chandigarh. This MDPwas conducted byNational Institute ofPersonnel Management.

International Conference on Management and InformationSystems, 29th & 30th September, 2019, at Bangkok.Dr. Shuchi Dawra , Associate Professor, BBA - B.Com Department,Chitkara Business School was awarded an 'Outstanding PaperAward' for her paper 'Creativity and Career Success: A study ofPerception of Future Managers' in the 'International Conferenceon Management and Information Systems', held on 29th & 30thSeptember, 2019, at Thailand.


Dr. Priya Jindal presented a paperentitled "Is Indian banks ready manage inVuca World" at the InternationalConference at volatility uncertainity,complexity and ambiguity in business on23rd & 24th November , 2019 in MIETBusiness School, Meerut.

Dr.Shivinder presented a paper entitled"Investigating possibilty of predictingturnover intention using quality of worklife" at the 3rd International Conferenceon innovations in computing on 12th &13th December , 2019 in CGC, Landran.
