Moving Forward on Capital Projects
Iam proud to acknowledge the hard work, time and attention dedicated to our capitalprojects. As reported at the April 14 member meeting; the Facilities Planning, Finance, andStrategic Investment & Funding Committees have been working on the proposed Regatta
Center, surrounding improvements, and the prudent funding of this project. These changesare necessary to enhance member value now and to support our world-class programs intothe future. The work on our dry storage dock is being completed to ensure the safety andsustainability of this essential part of our harbor facilities. Please see the updates on theseprojects in this edition of The Bulletin as well as updates on the website and in the Bow Wave.
SFYC Commitment to YachtingAs I reviewed the draft of this edition of The Bulletin, a consistent theme is the
commitment of SFYC members and programs to yachting. On the racing scene, how about the results of the 2015 San Francisco Cup? It was very
exciting for all to witness the huge success of Team SFYC. It was so humbling for me to havethe honor of delivering this coveted trophy back to The SFYC. Also on the match racing front, skipper Shawn Bennett and his team will challenge the Long Beach Yacht Club on June 6 toreturn the San Francisco Perpetual Cup (the second oldest trophy in all of US sailing) back toour Club. This month, we are hosting the 8th annual Great San Francisco Schooner Race. Thishas become a signature event for The SFYC. Even the Auxiliary is elevating their interest inracing with the addition of The Auxiliary Cup.
It was great to see so many Staff Commodores competing in the Staff Commodores’ Cupdedicated to these legends. It is also rewarding to see more members racing in the highlycompetitive Club Series. And, our youth sailors continue to achieve success on San FranciscoBay and around the country.
The Wednesday Night Match Racing and Thursday Night Women Racing Programs arewell-attended evidencing the desire of our members to become more proficient in handlingsmall boats and to avoid the mid-week doldrums.
Our Race Management Program continues to excel as do our members racing on the Bayand afar. Additions to The SFYC's Distinguished Sailor Plaque, displayed in the clubhouselobby, include John Kilroy who won the 2014 Melges 20 North American and WorldChampionships, Jim Cunningham who won the 2014 Etchells National Championship, andJim Coggan who has logged 20,000+ nautical miles of short-handed South Pacific passagesfrom 2007 through 2014. Please see Race News for recent racing achievement of ourmembers.
When not racing, how about cruising with fellow members? Our Cruise Committee hasadded some new fun events to the schedule and has been eagerly seeking to expandparticipation, including members that do not have a boat.
Save the Date: August 1Entertainment Committee members Mimi Blakeslee, Stephanie Stroub and Stephanie
Portillo are working on The SFYC’s Committee Chili Challenge. Join us to savor the culinarytalents of The SFYC’s Committees and to vote for Members’ Favorite!
Special thanks to P/P Mimi Cornelius who has retired from years as a valued editor ofThe Bulletin. We will miss you Mimi!

FACILITIES PLANNING
Proposed Regatta Center Update:
On April 14, 2015; The SFYC Board ofDirectors hosted the 5th meeting toupdate the membership on the current
status of the proposed Regatta Center andsurrounding improvements. The architects,David Ross & George Jansen of Bull StockwellAllen, presented the initial schematic design tothe audience of 220+ members and spouses.Following the presentation, was a period ofquestions and member comments, which werevery positive and supportive of the direction ofthe project. Several members urged the Boardto continuing moving forward. While theFacilities Planning Committee is working on thedetail of the project; the Finance Committee, theBoard and the newly created StrategicInvestment & Funding Committee are workingon the options available for funding the project.
The next steps will involve outreach to theCity of Belvedere and our neighbors while theplans are being prepared for a City of BelvederePlanning submittal. We have a long way to goand your support is greatly appreciated. TheFlag Officers and Board of Directors will beplanning the next meeting in order to keepmembers informed of the process and projectstatus. The proposed schematic renderings witha current project status will also be posted onthe SFYC website and in the front entry area ofthe club.
Please direct any questions or commentsyou may have to the Facilities PlanningCommittee or email us [email protected].

Dry Dock Project
We are finally off and runningwith the project to strengthenthe dry storage docks and
replace their rough and uneven surface. The existing pressure-treated surfaceplanks will be removed and will berecycled. In addition, new strengtheningposts are being installed below the decks. The upper surfaces of all joists and blocksare being protected with a waterproofplastic membrane. This will greatlyincrease the life of the wood. Finally, smooth and durable hardwood surface
planks are being installed. Work started atthe Youth Sailing end of the dock, andwill finish with the docks nearest theLawn.
The removal of the old grey dockboxes provides more dock surface forboth Club and Youth vessels.
This project has been underconsideration for several years by theHarbor Committee as time has continuedto degrade the heavily used docks. However, because we wanted this majorproject to blend in appearance andfunction with the new Regatta Center –earlier, only a concept – we put the dockproject aside until there was more detailon the proposed location and design of
the Regatta Center. We can now besure that the new docks will integratenicely with this project should itbecome a reality.
And yes, there will be disruption asportions of the dock are closed off andboats are shifted around as the projectproceeds. Please bear with us during thework. The results will be worth the wait.
As mentioned in an earlier BowWave note, if you have children at theClub, please remind them not to walk orclimb through the work site. Protrudingmetal, unsecured planks, rough wood, deep mud below, and exposed wiringmake the area very hazardous for kids, aswell as for curious adults.

Richard vonEhrenkrook and crew PaulSutchek have lots of offshore racingexperience off the Bay Area, so a division
win the Double-handed Farallon Race on March28 was not too much of a surprise. What may besurprising though is that the duo logs all of theseocean miles and numerous division wins aboardby far the smallest and slowest boat in the fleet. The Cal 20 rates 273, almost twice the PHRFrating of most of the other boats in her division.Nevertheless, the Can ‘O Whoopass managed tocorrect out on top of her division by over 13minutes after almost ten-and-a-half hours ofsailing. In the age of the “selfie” nothing else quiteshows the scale of this little boat out on the bigopen ocean. Paul described huge waves bouncingthe little 20-footer all over the place, and that thepicture doesn’t do the sea state justice.
Staff Commodores’ Cup
This year’s Staff Commodores’ Cup wasanother great success with ten StaffCommodores participating in this event. The
weather and breeze turned out to be perfect forthe competitors and PRO, Anne Scully. In theSpinnaker Division S/C Tad Lacey on Peregrinetook 1st place and Jr. S/C Bill Melbostad took 2ndon JR. In the Non-Spinnaker Division Jib Martenson Freedom with S/C Bob Griswold aboard took1st and Glenn Isaacson on Q with S/C John Swainaboard took a close 2nd. Cissy Kirrane, Race Chairand widow of the late S/C Pat Kirrane, was inattendance presenting the winners with thetrophies generously donated by the family of S/CPatrick J. Kirrane.
