Box 59 Brownsville, TN 38012 Thursday September 29, 2011 By CAlVIN CARTER [email protected] On September 24, 2011 around 6:14 p.m. the Brownsville Police Department responded to a fire that took place at Walmart located at 1100 North Dupree Avenue. As authorities entered the store through the grocery side entrance, they noticed a large amount of smoke. There was a merchandise rack, several men’s clothing and apparel items lying on the floor with some type of chemical agent used to extinguish the fires and char marks. There was a rack with burnt socks lying around it, as well as boxes with burn marks lying on the floor. Making contact with Walmart Personnel, authorities were informed that a rack had been se t on fire. Walmart employees had put out the fire by the time authorities arrived. After closer inspection from the Brownsville-Haywood County Fire Department, it was believed that the fire was started on the side of the rack that contained socks. Authorities later got the chance to view the surveillance video footage as well as photographs of the incident and a suspect. Authorities observed an unnamed black juvenile, walking over to the rack that was the site of the burning, and then seeing a flash they believed came from a lighter of some sort. He then walked to the end of an aisle, and appeared to just “stand around.” He then returned and walked past the front of the rack that was lit. He looked back and then ran away from the scene. Minutes later, the suspect returned and walked past the location of the fire. Photos were shown of the suspect entering the store and exiting, as well as evidence of what he purchased—two scent oils prior to leaving the store— and the vehicle he left in. Later that evening, authorities met with the suspect and his father at Walmart. The suspect was asked, while his father present, if he had caused the fire. The suspect at first denied it, but quickly changed his answer after authorities noted that they had him on tape. Suspect said that he lit the fire with a lighter. To encourage children to always use their car seats and buckle up from a very early age, the BPD also conducts Child Seat Checkpoints throughout the year. The BPD prefers that no matter the age of the child, if they are less than 4’9” tall they should remain in a booster seat. The reason for this is if you are not tall enough the way the seat belt system is designed the belt will go across the neck instead of the chest. “The longer they can stay in a car seat, the safer they can be.” Lt. Barry Diebold said. The Tennessee Child Passenger Safety Law states that children under the age of 13 must remain in the back seat. The reason for this is that the body of a child under the age of 13 cannot with stand the force of an air bag. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly three out of four car seats are not used properly. Even worse, the leading cause of death of children ages 1 through 12, is a result of injuries sustained in motor vehicle traffic crashes. On a local level 9 out of 10 car seats checked by the BPD are not installed properly. The BPD issued 259 citations in the past three years for children not being in their required child restraint devices. During these years the BPD installed 259 child seats at traffic stops to ensure the children would be transported safely. Additionally, the BPD has installed and replaced 42 seats that were being used that were not safe due to the manufactures expiration or damage to the seat. The BPD also has installed 24 seats for emergency needs with local agencies. They have also equipped the Haywood County Ambulance Authority with child restraints that are used during emergency transportation. These seats are acquired from a grant funding the West TN Child Passenger Safety Center, The Governor’s Highway Safety Office and the City of Brownsville. The BPD is planning to host a Child Seat Checkpoint October 21 2-4 p.m. in Walmart parking lot. At the checkpoint, the officers will check the warranty on the car seats, will check the condition of the car seats and check and make sure the car seats are installed properly. If the car seat is either out of warranty or in poor condition the BPD will replace the car seat free of charge on the spot. If the car seat is not installed properly they will instruct the parent on how to do it correctly to make sure the child is transported safely. Juanita Austin gets a little assistance from Albert Harris while explaining one of her family’s personal artifacts.

The Brownsville native, was hosting “In Search of Kith and Kin,” a special event hosted at the Dunbar-Carver Museum

September 14.Austin, while showing

off various family photos and artifacts, took the opportunity to discuss genealogy and the importance of chronicling you family’s history and passing it down to future generations.

“Future generations should know from whom they descended, where they come from,” Austin

told the packed crowd.Austin also took the

time to note methods and ways everyone could do to better chronicle their family. Suggestions stemmed from simply turning off the TV and coming together during dinner as a family, telling historical family stories during family reunions.

For example, the biggest department cuts were the jail with $94,000 out, Parks and Recreation with $92,000 out.

Some of the proposed plans however, like a $5 raise in rural sanitation fees did not pass.

Yet despite revealing cuts, and lower tax rate, residents of Haywood County present at last Thursday’s public meeting didn’t hesitate to question the latest results with the budget, or disapprove of any tax rate.

“Did any of you consider the budget at its current rate?” resident Larry Fittz asked the budget committee.

“You can’t say that we hadn’t thought of that,” budget committee member Jerry Smith said. “The first time we met, the first thing Allen [King] and I said was ‘No new taxes.’” …So yes it was discussed to a certain extent. Not a soul up here wants to raise property taxes. We

all have to pay out of our pockets here too, some more than others.”

“We looked at every budget, every line item, looked at the facts from the departments” budget committee chairman Allan King said. “Every department was needing money. We fought with that.”

While the main focus was to at least get a budget passed, many commissioners noted that they will continue to work on the budget and whittle away whatever is possible.

“I’m going to continue to cut,” commissioner Stevens said. “I don’t like it, but we need to move forward. We don’t want the state to come in and stop the schools. We need to move forward.”

When Thursday’s meeting passed, Haywood County Mayor Franklin Smith noted that the following meeting wouldn’t end without some type of budget.

“We are not going to

adjourn until we have a budget passed,” he said.

It looks as if that statement held true, though there were some commissioners that still didn’t agree with the budget.

With two resolutions to vote to pass the budget—the tax rate and appropriations—the commission passed both with a 16-4 vote.

Commissioners Teddy Waldrop, Wally Eubanks, John Gorman Jr., Chris Lea, Larry Gene Stanley, and Sam Mathes Jr. voted against both resolutions.

While the county government generally noted that they will continue to work on the budget, even though it has passed, they are also making plans for next year’s. Mayor Smith noted that they will start on next fiscal year’s budget on January 2012, and will also put together a special committee of residents who will work alongside budget committee members.

Representatives of the University of Memphis Graduate Program in City and Regional Planning appeared before the Brownsville City Planning Commission at the request of Mayor Jo Matherne on Thursday, September 21, 2011 to present a detailed outline of the City’s comprehensive plan.

The primary purpose of the presentation was to receive input on the plan’s overall development goal, improvement objectives, and action strategies from the City Planning Commission before the final draft of the completed plan is presented to the public, City Planning Commission, and Board of Aldermen review, comment, and vote.

U of M Professors Ken Reardon, Laura Saija, and David Westendorff gave a thirty-minute presentation. The University’s planning recommendations were based upon twelve months of research that included the analysis of past plans; a review of US Census data; interviews with more than forty local business, civic, and religious leaders; focus groups involving small business owners, corporate human resource managers, pastors, high school students, and Latino/a citizens; telephone interviews with more than 320 residents; and a series of open community forums and a city-wide planning summit in which more than 250 Brownvillians participated.

Seeking to build upon the City’s many strengths, the overall goal for the Brownsville on the Move Comprehensive Plan is to:

“Position Brownsville as West Tennessee’s most

desirable city recognized for its natural beauty, rich cultural history, artistic attractions and musical heritage, abundant agriculture, exceptional architecture and unique town square, quality public services, faith-based traditions, and love of learning, with a central location with the metropolitan region bounded by the scenic Hatchie River – a thriving community where small town values, quality of life, diversity, and entrepreneurial spirit are honored daily.”

Following the City Planning Commission’s discussion of the overall development goal, Professor Reardon outlined seven community improvement objectives local residents, area businessmen, civic leaders, elected officials, and their allies would have to achieve to reach the above stated goal. Among these were the following improvement objectives:

To preserve 1.) and enhance the city’s public spaces and built environment through the skillful application of advanced urban design principles and methods.

To strengthen 2.) the city’s economic and tax base by expanding local employment, entrepreneurial, and investment opportunities for current and future residents and business owners.

Somewhere Close To Adulthood

Getting by with half a pot

Ice Cubes to Eskimos, UpdatedThe OnStar

Corporation riled up a few people last week when they announced that they are going to gather information from all cars equipped with their service, even if the drivers are not paid subscribers. In other words, even if you don’t use the service, someone, somewhere is keeping track of where and when you go, how fast you drive and even how well your tires are inflated.

More and more, we have less and less to say about how much other people know about the ostensibly private parts of our lives.

Do you have a discount card at a grocery or drug store? It’s good for a lot more than just a discount on tooth paste or avocados. It’s also good for compiling a data base on your purchasing habits. It’s called data mining, and the store uses your information to compile a profile of you, which it then uses to tailor the coupons printed on your check or receipt and the emails they sent you. They want to know just whom their customers are. And maybe they sell your profile to other companies. Are you a “time stressed meat eater?” A “woman’s magazine purchaser?” There are companies that would like to know that before they send out their catalogs.

They’re not being diabolical in doing this; they’re just trying to maximize their sales and profits. They don’t want to waste their time trying to sell you things you’re not likely to buy. They’re using your data base to look into your mind, not to play with it.

But they do play with your mind in other ways. Ever go to one of those fancy grocery stores with all the cut flowers and plants at the entrance? Those flowers and plants make you think “freshness”, psychologists tell us. They may have been in cold storage for weeks, but sitting there in the doorway they look as if a farm girl had just picked them yesterday, and subliminally suggest to us that all the produce in the adjacent section is fresh off the farm. That’s also what that ice all the vegetables are sitting in is for. It’s not to keep them fresh; it’s to make you think they are. The flowers and ice are what

are known in the trade as “symbolics.” They make you think of purity and freshness, and you transfer those thoughts to the produce resting on the ice.

Marketers know more about our preferences than we do these days and they’re learning more all the time. They are using that knowledge to sell us everything from diet soda to sofa beds.

Take bananas, for example. You probably don’t know what color of bananas you are most likely to buy, but they do. It’s “warm”, as opposed to “vibrant” yellow, so banana companies, after doing studies to confirm this, plant their crops under conditions to produce that color. Note that it has nothing to do with how the bananas taste. It’s how they look that counts.

Apples? Red apples outsell all others, taste be darned. Compare the taste of a Red Delicious apple with that of nearly any other, and the other will win, but in spite of this, the majority of apples sold in America are Red Delicious. They look like we think apples should look.

So much of what we think we know about our preferences, we don’t. It turns out that all sorts of hidden persuaders are working on us as well.

And not only do advertisers try to tap into our unknown (to us) preferences, they try to shape them as well. And get this; they begin to try to influence our food desires even before we are born. A couple of examples will suffice; A Philippine candy company gave candy to physicians to give away to pregnant women, which they did. Then, several months later, the company came out with a coffee product with the same flavor as the candy, and guess what — toddlers went wild over it. Mothers began giving the coffee to young babies to calm them down, which it did.

An Asian shopping conglomerate sprayed baby fragrance in all the clothing areas in its stores and cherry fragrance in its food court area. Soothing music was played throughout the mall. Months later, mothers began reporting that their crying babies calmed down like magic the minute they carried them into the mall.

Kids. Did you know children are much more likely to eat vegetables if they come in a McDonald’s package? Or that some fast food restaurants and bakeries pipe artificial fresh food smells into public areas to make you and your children hungry for their food? Or that more than 70% of supermarket impulse purchases are made because of a nagging child? Or that half of all women shoppers will purchase a food product just because one of her children asks her to?

Kraft and OreIda know this, you can be sure, and a lot more as well. They know that only about 15% of our purchasing decisions are based upon rational analysis of our needs; the other 85% is influenced by all sorts of factors such as brand loyalty, nostalgia, fear, peer pressure and celebrity.

That’s right, celebrity. Guess how much sales of RayBan sunglasses increased after Tom Cruise wore them in the 1983 movie, Risky Business? More than 50%. Then, three years later he wore them again, in the movie, Top Gun, and sales increased another 40%. But get this; 20 years later after Will Smith wore them in Men in Black II, sales tripled.

Is it any wonder companies pay Hollywood an astounding seven billion dollars a year to place products in movies and TV shows?

So don’t think you know what you’re doing the next time you cruise the aisles of your favorite store; you don’t. You may think you are buying based on your genuine consumer needs, but increasingly, your purchases are driven by psychological manipulation effected by increasingly scientific and sophisticated media promotion, much of which you don’t even recognize as advertising.

That bouncing baby boy your wife presented you with last year? By the time he’s three, he’ll recognize 100 different brands, and between 300 and 400 by age ten. The first word he says may be “Daddy”, but the first one he will recognize, researchers tell us, will either be “McDonald’s” or “Ronald.”

But look at his way, at least it’s not “Bud.”

I’ve never really considered myself an adult. I know that legally that’s a completely different story. I can vote. I can buy a pack of cigarettes or a beer from the gas station. And if I were ever charged with a crime from authorities I would be tried as an adult.

But really, I’ve never actually felt like one, just weirdly out of place.

I still give strange looks to people whenever they call me “Mr. Carter” or “Mr. Calvin.”

An utterance of “sir” is usually responded with a raised eyebrow from me.

Last weekend, that kind of changed, as I bought my first car. It was exactly in the plans, but given the circumstances presented, let’s just say that there was really little choice.

No more hand me downs, or borrowed cars or shared payments.

It’s a weird feeling, the fact that there’s actually something in my name. The loss of money or continual hits to my already pathetic wallet is nothing new however.

I’m completely convinced that I’ll close

out my twenties pretty much broke. In this economy, it’s safe to say that I won’t be the only one.

Despite any monetary woes, I’m trying to look at all this on the bright side. This could be taken as a mark of real adulthood for me.

And maybe this is also proof that things really are changing. I’m sure the continued ride into this grown-up land will

be very chaotic, with bits more of kicking or screaming. Yet if the end results involve living my dreams, then may as well welcome it.

Next thing you know, I’ll be wearing ties, handling mortgages and coming up with names for my children.

Let’s just hope that all of this is actually later than sooner.

I’m not in a rush.

The first stop when I get up each morning is the counter with the coffee pot. We always try to keep plenty of coffee on hand. But one morning recently, there was only enough coffee to make about half of a pot.

After a frantic search for more coffee, none could be found anywhere. I began to panic and even entertained the thought of running around town at five o’clock in the morning looking for some place open to purchase a pound. I’m happy to report that my better judgment over ruled that thought.

It usually takes about 12 cups to get us all going in the morning if everyone takes a helping. However, that morning we had to settle for much less.

While making a joke about my coffee incident, I remembered a financial crisis that hit a family of four back in the mid 1980s in Shelby County. The recession that year greatly affected the pocket book of a young auto dealer. He had been very successful for several decades.

Signs of luxury living was everywhere. There was the big house with the Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis

court, yacht and a number of fancy sport cars. Both he and his wife also came from upper middle class families who possibly never experienced such financial difficulties in their lives.

When all the repossessions and foreclosures were complete, this former family of plenty was left only with a few personal belongings, a badly worn RV, and a very small savings account. They had no transportation and a friend in the used car business gave them a vehicle that met the need.

They relocated to a small track of land in West Tennessee and set up living quarters in the old RV. It wasn’t easy living in the beginning but the family held it together for better days to come.

However, there were positives that showed up during the hard times. The family prayed together, played together, worked together, and stayed together.

The things the family lost during that financial crisis are only temporary but the things they gained are eternal. Perhaps these words of Max Cleland will add another dimension to this line of thought.

Cleland who served as a U.S. Senator from Georgia, administrator of the U.S. Veterans Administration under President Jimmy Carter, and a U.S. Army Captain during the Vietnam War lost both legs and an arm during combat in Vietnam.

While serving as administrator of the Veterans Administration, Cleland delivered a motivation speech containing these lines that became a part of his witness: “I asked God for strength, that I might achieve. I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey. I asked for health, that I might do greater things. I was given infirmity, that I might do better things. I asked for riches that I might be happy. I was given poverty, that I might be wise. I asked for power, that I might have the praises of men. I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life. I was given life that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing that I ask for, but everything I had hoped for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am among all people most richly blessed.”

“Why is there so much evil in the world? If God is all knowing and all-powerful, couldn’t He abolish all evil with a single word? Why doesn’t He?” A valid question, but how much evil would you like God to abolish? All of it…or just a little? Of course, we want the murderers gone…but we who have hated our brothers are mur-

derers (1 John 3:15). Also, God could get rid of the adul-terers… but Jesus said we who lust are adulterers (Matt. 5:28). What about the blasphemers, or the coveters...If God destroyed all evil…He would have to destroy us too!

But, God has made a way for us to be cleansed before that day when sin is destroyed. “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand’ repent and believe in the gospel.” – Jesus Christ (Mark 1:14).

Entering Friday night's non-district road game

against Fayette-Ware, Haywood had shown signs of being able to put points on the board.

The Tomcats held early

leads against Crockett County and Dyersburg in previous weeks, only to see those leads evapo-rate.

But Friday in Somer-ville, the Tomcats raced to an early lead and this time made it stick.

Haywood built a 20-0

first-quarter lead and never really let Fayette-Ware back in the game on the way to a convinc-ing 42-28 win, their first of the season.

“I'm really happy for the kids,” said first-year Haywood coach Slade Calhoun. “They were excited. I was glad to see them get this after those losses.”

Fayette-Ware (0-5) cut Haywood's lead to 20-8 early in the second quar-ter, but the Tomcats re-sponded quickly.

Terrance Grandberry scored on a 4-yard run and Bryce Young hit Ter-rion Cooper on a 50-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and Hay-wood (1-4) was on its way.

Young threw his sec-ond touchdown pass of the game in the third quarter, a 29-yarder to Martez Comage, to in-crease the lead. Temarcus Clark got a quarterback sack in the endzone for a safety for Haywood's final two points.

Several players had big nights.

Young, a freshman, completed 11 of 18 pass-es for two scores and no interceptions. Comage caught five balls for 119 yards and Tyvarius Jones caught two passes for 47.

Seth Birdsong had a key 27-yard catch that set up Haywood's third touchdown, a 4-yard run by Young. Grandberry had two catches for 17 yards and scored the game's first touchdown on a 14-yard run.

Montravious Currie picked off a pass and returned it 13 yards for Haywood's second touchdown of the game.

“We played real good in the first quarter,” Cal-houn said. “To be honest it could have been 50 or 60 to nothing at the half … The second half left a little bit to be desired. If we played all the time like we played in the first quarter, we would have some more wins.”

The Tomcats will be looking for their first District 13-AAA win of the season Friday night when Ripley comes to town for homecoming.

Haywood wins in a blowoutEarly Scores, tough defense lead Haywood to first win

By JEFF [email protected]

The Haywood Junior High football team has been on a roll lately and that trend continued in a big way Tuesday night at home against Lauderdale Middle.

Kurston Russell re-turned the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown to give the Warriors a quick lead and an explosive offense and smothering defense took care of the rest in a 48-0 win.

It was the fourth straight win for Hay-wood (6-1) and also clinched a playoff spot.

“That was a major goal,” said second-year head coach Ernie Jack-son, whose team missed the postseason last year. “We wanted to make the playoffs.”

Lauderdale Middle had

no answer for the War-riors' offense all night as Haywood built a 32-0 halftime lead.

With 4:46 left in the first quarter, Bo Gillespie hit Russell on a 35-yard touchdown pass and then ran for the 2-point conversion to push the lead 18-0.

Following an intercep-tion by Haywood's Wil Austin, Gillespie hit Rus-sell, who was wide open on a hitch and go pattern, for a 30-yard touchdown strike.

With 3:41 left in the half Tyrek Evans scored on a 5-yard run. Follow-ing a two-point conver-sion pass from Gillespie to Dylan Simmons, the lead was 32-0.

The third quarter start-ed with an interception by Russell. Two plays lat-er Corey Newbill hit Kris Johnson on a 35-yard touchdown pass.

Evans picked up Hay-wood's final tally on a 6-yard touchdown run.

Gillespie, who sur-passed the 1,000-yard passing mark during the game, now has 23 touch-downs passing and run-ning on the season.

The Warriors will play at Brighton Middle next Tuesday with the WTAC West regular season title on the line.

Following the win, the Warrior players and cheerleaders celebrated with the band and a large group of fans. Assistant coach William Grissom got doused with a cooler full of water.

“We do this after ev-ery game,” Jackson said about the celebration with the cheerleaders and the band. “We're all about being a family. That's our number one goal.”

By JEFF [email protected]

The Haywood High School cross country team competed in the prestigious Trinity Chris-tian Academy Invita-tional Tuesday afternoon in Jackson and all four Tomcats fared well.

Deonte Brown (19:50), Daniel Evans (23:18), Chris Swain (23:50) and Kyler Douglas (24:16) each posted season and personal best times.

“It's one of the tough-est meets we run,” said

Haywood coach Da-vid Claybrooks. “I was pretty pleased with how we ran. As a team we've still got some work to do though.”

This is the first year Claybrooks has served as Haywood's coach, and he has put an emphasis on building up the pro-gram and making it one that can compete with the strongest teams in the area.

“We're still working on toughness, pushing through the pain and running,” Claybrooks

said.Swain, a senior who

has been in the program since he was a freshman, has been one of the most improved runners on the team. His team at the TCA meet was almost three minutes quicker than his previous per-sonal best.

“He's pushing every-body really hard,” said Swain. “He gives us a lot of encouragement. A lot more people came out for the team when they found out what kind of coach he is.”

“He probably thinks I'm really hard on him,” Claybrooks said about Swain, who like the rest of his teammates has a GPA over 3.5. “I do that because he has a lot of potential.”

Swain said he is hop-ing do get a cross coun-try scholarship. But if he doesn't, he knows run-ning is something that will serve him well later in life.

“Running is some-thing that helps you in a lot of ways,” Swain said. “I'll use it some way I know.”

The Tomcats return to action Saturday at 10 a.m. in a meet at Union University in Jackson.

Wellwood/Zion News“Quit whining and start

worshipping. Stop pouting and start praising”!

Brother Mark Conway used this quote Sunday night at Zion Baptist Church as he continued his theme from the morning service entitled, “Be established in your faith.” He used I Thessalonians 3 and Jonah 1-2 for the main focus of the sermons. He concluded by reminding us that the easiest way to get through struggles is to praise God!

After Church, we took our grandson Jacob home who stayed with us because he was sick, so that Amanda could plan Mason’s birthday party and campout. We were able to stop by for the event and see about nine kids that ended up staying the night. Since Jason had work and a ball game, Justin helped set up the tent and started the fire. Even Ethan and Micah Rainey made it down for the party and Lyla had a blast with Lillie and Alivia. We actually saw all of our grandchildren along with several other rambunctious boys, help one little nine year old excited grandson enjoy his special day!

Brother Mark Conway reported ten attended the men’s community prayer breakfast Thursday and he presented the devotion. Anyone interested in joining this faithful group, come to Zion’s family life center Thursday morning at six. If you work, you will be out by seven at the latest.

Zion’s RA’s enjoyed their 4th annual fall campout at Zion September 23 hosted by Steven Adams. I did not get a chance to get details, but I’m sure they had a great time. Sometimes guys just won’t share their adventurous stories.

Mark your calendars: Beginning in October, Zion’s women will be starting a program similar to the men’s “Timothy Project.” If you would like to be a part of this study, please call Brother Mark or Lisa Conway. October 8 is the date for Zion’s annual stew. It’s not too late to donate baked goods for the old country store or help with the stew. Fall Revival will take place October 9 – 12. Precept Ministries Youth Bible conference will be held December 2 – 4.

Alice Elrod (mama) spent a few nights with us

while Jessie Lee was in the hospital this past week. Tuesday, she enjoyed lunch with nine of her HHS friends. They love to get together and make precious memories.

Jessie is home, but with lots of antibiotics that Norma administers through a port. He has a long way to go, and Norma has been fighting an ear infection, so please remember this family in your prayers.

Kim Schwarz-Smith is home following surgery, and Kevin Baggett is recuperating from his procedure. Cody Baggett is facing ear surgery in October and Danny Morris is undergoing physical therapy. Bessie Norris is in Crestview nursing home and Robert Campbell is recovering from a recent stroke.

Please pray for others who are sick, our military personnel and their families, the shut-ins, those who have lost loved ones, (remember Bethany Potter who lost her grandmother) and the leaders of our country.

Stanton NewsBy Debbie Sterbinsky

Stanton NewsAs most of you know, a

funeral for the oldest son of June Burress Yarbrough-Harris was held recently in Texas. June wants to let you all know a memorial service for Phil will be held in Stanton at a later date, possibly of the Saturday over the Thanksgiving holidays to help those who must travel from afar. I will post here when we know for certain.

We had a situation on Friday of last week which was met quickly by Stantonians. A young couple, who had recently moved here to Stanton with two small children, had lost their transportation and couldn’t get to work in Jackson. They were in dire need of food. We put the word out and within minutes, we had collected more than enough to get them through the weekend. Without a vehicle this young man will lose his job in Jackson.

The Stanton Cannery donated a hot plate and food on Wednesday. The mother is willing to do any type of work to feed the babies and their father is desperately trying to

find local work as well. On Friday we discovered their food supply was depleted, thus the situation mentioned above.

Oleo Acres was quick to respond with a box from their Bountiful Blessings storage. We would like to help Oleo Acres replenish their stock for future needs. Any food donations can be brought to the Stanton Welcome Center/Library. Stanton sure has some great people, and it’s a good thing they keep up with Facebook!

Last week, a resident also found a beagle type dog with a pink collar. Did anyone lose one? Does anyone want it? She is light brown and white and very shy. Call us and we’ll put you in touch with the finder.

I was also told the other day we have foxes in Stanton so watch your small animals!

Our GED class schedule at the Stanton Welcome Center has changed: classes will now be from 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (as opposed to 9 - 11 a.m.) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Stanton Welcome

Center/Library will be open to the public from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., and again from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Even though we will be open to the public beginning at 1 p.m., classes will continue with Ms. Kay until 2:30 p.m. We know this is a bit confusing, but we are going to squeeze it all in!

It is my understanding there will be a Flea Market in Downtown Stanton Saturday, October 1 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information call Sam Mathes at 731-432-0081 or Veronica Poke at 731-431-0311.

Residents and former residents of Stanton, you may mail Stanton News to me at P.O. Box 181, Stanton, TN 38069, reach me at the Stanton Welcome Center/Library at 731-548-2564, or e-mail me at: [email protected]. Please put “Stanton News” in the subject line. Together we will look at the past, look toward the future and report current events.

Bethel - Belle Eagle NewsFall is officially here and

anybody that knows me knows that I am enjoying every minute. The farmers harvested the corn in front of my house so now I don’t have to be looking at cornstalks all the time.

Several of my friends are on a cruise this week, Brenda Fox, Jimmy and Linda Leath and David and Cheryl Simmons. Farris and Patsy Climer have been attending their granddaughter, Leeann King’s, soccer games this week. Dyersburg has only lost one game, so they must have a good team.

Mary Scott Scallions and Betty Scott enjoyed lunch at Cheddars last Monday and later saw the movie “The Help”. Mary is slowly recovering from her stroke and is getting out more. Speaking of getting out more, Charlie Greenway rode his bike

30 miles every day last week. Charlie has been determined to get that weight off and has lost over 90 pounds.

Eastside Elementary School hosted “Grandparents Day” last Friday, so Ricky Scott went to Anderson to enjoy lunch with his grandson, Jesse Scott. Betty Scott attended Eastside and enjoyed lunch with her granddaughter, Savanna Coulston. So many grandparents showed up at Eastside that extra tables were set up in classrooms.

Homecoming was enjoyed by everyone at Bethel Community Church last Sunday. We all enjoyed visiting with those who we have not seen for a long time and I am sure everyone enjoyed the delicious food.

Finis Wilson attended Bethel last Sunday. His

wife, Minnie, had foot surgery and was unable to attend.

Lee Anna Parker Davis and sister, Molly Parker Cole, hosted a baby shower last Sunday at Tabernacle Church for Tracy Hathcock Hale, daughter of Ginger Thornton Hathcock. Twenty-six church members and Taylor kinfolk joined in the fun.

Congratulations to Maggie Anne Herron and Katie Lewis for making the first honor roll for the first six weeks at Haywood High School. These girls are growing up fast as they will be seniors next year. Keep up the good work Maggie Anne and Katie!!

Thought for the week: “A recent survey indicated that people are the happiest on Fridays. Let’s treat every day like Friday.”

Paul and Jane Lott recently returned from a cruise on the Carnival Ship, Triumph, which carried them to the city of Belize, Mahogany Bay, Honduras and Cozumel, Mexico. They then popped over to the Mayan Ruins where they boarded a shuttle boat to the mainland. From there, they took a guided bus tour and walking tour, which were located on the crystal blue Caribbean Sea. They said it was absolutely breathtaking! Some of their favorite sites were the Pirate monkeys and birds of the Caribbean, in their natural habitat and the oldest church (St. John’s Catholic Church) in Central America. They also loved the unique cuisines on board and certainly took advantage of trying them all!

Fantastic news for Ann Duvall Harrell! She was reappointed to serve another term on the Ethics Committee by the Madison County Commissioners! Our Haywood County folks are even found over in Madison County, doing good works and representing us very well! Good job, Ms. Ann!

Holly Grove News“All Christians are

Called By God” was the subject of the message. God calls us to leave our comfort zone and to make an extreme commitment, each one was called to salvation and to be sure of it then we are called to sanctification, where we live and talk differently, to stewardship of all we are, to be soul winners, intentionally reaching out to others, to service and ministry and to suffer for the One who died for us. Islam is making endroads into our society today. One man wrote- “It is we who will beat you, for we know how to obtain our means. We believe our message and we are ready to sacrifice anything, even our life. You Americans are afraid to get your hands dirty. Believe me, it is we who will win.” Is he right? How dedicated are we to the one, true God of Heaven and Earth?

The choir sang “Goodbye World, Goodbye” for special music led by Brother Ralph Brown. Following services, we gathered in the family life center for a meal. The money collected was for the youth’s activities. Happy birthday to Hayden Baynes, Gena

Price, Wade Stanley, Cindy Saveh, Brenda Stanley, Robert Barden, Blake Moore, Ruth Taylor, Anne-Marie Grimes and Becky Booth.

We express our heartfelt sympathy to Sue Vanstory and her family in the death of her mother, Mrs. Ernestine Crutchfield and to Peggy Harvey and her family and to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey in the death of Doug Harvey. All these will be truly missed by their family and friends.

We were happy to have Brother Fred Campbell and wife Nancy and Rebekah Hopper back in the U S of A and at Holly Grove Church Sunday. They and Tony Lipford have just returned from a 10-day mission trip to Japan. A typhoon hit parts of Japan while they were there, but not in the area where they were. Four were killed and hundreds were evacuated from the area where it hit.

Alan and Debbie Jones and Jennifer and Dewey drove to the Bluff City last Friday afternoon. Debbie and Jennifer joined Heath and Julie Hopkins, Hayden and John at the FedEx Forum for the presentation of Disney on Ice. Dewey and Alan enjoyed a meal together at

a Memphis restaurant.Let’s continue to

remember the sick in prayer. Sierra McClinton is in a Jackson hospital following a serious wreck. Josh Parks is in a Memphis hospital following a bad wreck. Ava Hopper, the little granddaughter of Ricky and Kathy Hopper is home following a stay in the hospital. Annalee Myers is in the Vanderbilt hospital in Nashville. Others are Elvin Wells, Viola Brown, Betty Friend, Debbie Jones, Ruth Taylor, Helen Hastings, Michelle Vaughn, Bonnie Patterson and Rex Bond. Also include Ashlyn Young at St. Jude, Sandra Posey, Jeff Parker, Fletcher Lewis, Ted Mann, Geraldine Lawrence, Shelby Hendrix and Ken Covington. Garit Kail’s little grandson, Zackery, is very sick.

Marjorie Williams and Phil and Peggy Emison and family attended the Holt family reunion at Chickasaw State Park last Saturday.

The article in the Graphic last week telling of Robert Barden and the jail ministry was very good. Thanks to our Sheriff and others for reinstating the jail ministry. It is such a wonderful ministry.

Sugar CreekRetirement Center News

Well, I’m back! Like the folks here at Sugar Creek, you didn’t even know I was gone, did you? I went to Houston to my granddaughters “big fat Texas wedding.”

It was quite a to-do. She married a young man from England whom she met while they were both studying in Germany. There were lots of folks from England there, along with Canadians, Norwegians, etc. All I asked was that the “roughnecks” from Texas and the “rednecks” from Tennessee didn’t embarrass me in front of all those prim and proper-necked Brits!

One night my daughter hosted a barbecue in her backyard complete with a mechanical bucking bull - the “lads” from England had a ball trying to ride that! I could write a whole book about THIS wedding, but the last thing I’ll say is that the ladies from U.K. had HATS on for it so of course, not to be outdone, I wore one of those little things that sits on the side of your head called a “Fascinator” like several of the English ladies wore to the ROYAL wedding. I was “in.”

As usual, Sugar Creek kept turning while I was gone. They got flu shots, played games, had Bible studies, had root beer floats, etc. thanks to Jessie Howell.

Our love and best wishes are with Virginia Dickinson this week as she has had hip surgery and is at Crestview doing rehab. My sweet neighbor, June Walker, has also had hip surgery, but she is doing her rehab at Haywood Park. Hope you both get along fine.

Margaret Gruenwald and Elizabeth Reid came to visit Martha Jane Williams, who is still a little under the weather. Phyllis was

here this week also. We want to thank Brenda

Lonon who brought a gorgeous arrangement of flowers to Sugar Creek last week for our enjoyment. This was the centerpiece at her home when she hosted a dinner party for Morgan Williams and Blake Simpson. Thank you, Brenda, for sharing with our residents.

Thank you also to Frances Mann and her daughter, Linda, for the wonderful Banana Split Party they gave for our residents Tuesday. They did that last year and the residents really loved it, so they decided to do it again. Thank you so much, ladies, not only for the money you spend on us, but for the TIME it takes to get it done.

They come out and make the banana splits and serve them. What great friends!

Barbara McGary had some special guests this week – Tiffany and Carey Henry and their children, Emily and Conner from Vero Beach, Fla. Also here to see her was Jessica Hinson from Breckinridge, CO. Tiffany and Jessica are sisters, so when one comes home, the other one does too. They are all Barbara’s family so she was thrilled to see them.

Do you realize why it’s so hard to lose weight when you get older – because your body has made friends with your fat!

Come see us, we’re missing you.

Look for our Hatchie Fall Fest special issue in the October 6 edition of the States Graphic.

It honors the 8th annual Fall Fest and will feature

photos, schedule of events, local businesses

and much more.

Whether you have been diabetic for years or have been recently diagnosed, diabetes is a condition that requires daily self-management. Being diabetic presents a number of challenges. The most common are managing your blood sugar and using medications or insulin properly. There is also the struggle to plan healthy meals and the task of explaining your condition to family members and friends. And what about navigating the health care system to get the most out of your doctor visits?

A new program called “Take Charge of Your Diabetes” has been developed by Stanford University and is being implemented by UT Extension. This is a six-session class that will address all of the topics mentioned above and others. This program is being offered free of charge this fall and is open to people who have diabetes and those who care for a diabetic family member. The fi rst session is Tuesday, October 11, at 3 p.m. at the UT Extension Offi ce, located at 100 S. Wilson Ave. The group will meet on Tuesdays through November 15. This will be a fun, interactive class that participants will look forward to each week.

Even if you have completed the “Dining with Diabetes” series in the past, you will gain new information and insight from “Take Charge of Your Diabetes”. The two classes are very different. Here is the

tentative schedule of topics: Session 1: Tuesday, October 11Common problems with diabetes, diabetes as a chronic condition, self-management tools, blood sugar monitoring, healthy eatingSession 2: Tuesday, October 18 Facts about carbohydrates, formula for a healthy eating plan, symptoms of low blood sugar, preventing low blood sugarSession 3: Tuesday, October 25Preventing and delaying diabetes complications, planning low fat meals and snacks, role of physical activity and exercise, dealing with stress, muscle relaxation techniquesSession 4: Tuesday, November 1 Dealing with emotions, reading nutrition labels, endurance activities, guided imagerySession 5: Tuesday, November 8 Managing depression, positive thinking, solutions for

c o m m u n i c a t i o n problems, role of medications in blood sugar control, ways to remember to take medications, medication effectsSession 6: Tuesday, November 15 Blood sugar control during sick days, proper foot care, ways to talk to your doctor, plans for dealing with diabetes in the futureSpace is extremely limited. Many appliances continue to draw a small amount of power when they are switched off. These “phantom” loads occur in most appliances that use electricity, such as VCRs, televisions, stereos, computers, and kitchen appliances. These phantom loads can be avoided by unplugging the appliance or using a power strip and using the switch on the power strip to cut all power to the appliance.
