I am immensely proud of the support our community gives to area military, and this last month was a prime example.

Navy Week was another huge hit in the region. Fargo was just one of 12 cities selected to host this Navy signature outreach program this year. Events and activities included a Navy simulator and interactive displays, musical performances by the Navy Band Great Lakes, performances from the

Navy Parachute Team “Leap Frogs,” and much more. Navy Week also coincided with the Fargo Airsho, where residents were able to witness a stunning navy flight demonstration team performance from the Blue Angels.

The AirSho, which normally takes place every two years, was sorely missed in 2013, and the excitement over the Blue Angels’ return was felt with a sold-out crowd. Many thanks are owed to the

show’s co-chairs Dick Walstad and Darrol Schroeder for all of their hard work pulling off such a spectacular event.

On July 21, The Chamber also brought in Deborah Lee James, the Secretary of the U.S. Air Force, to visit the 119th Wing of the North Dakota Air National Guard base in Fargo. As the most prominent dignitary to ever visit the Happy Hooligans, her time here was extremely meaningful for our area’s Guard.

To top it all off, at the end of the month we hosted our best ever Military Appreciation Night at the RedHawks. From the first pitch by a World War II veteran to each live performance from Lee Greenwood, I could feel the patriotism and know that our military families were proud to call this region home.

I have to give thanks to The Chamber’s military affairs committee for all their hard work and dedication to supporting our troops and representing our own military members. I am incredibly proud to be an American and proud to be a part of this great community.

In January 1974, Lanning was elected to the Moorhead city council. In 1980, he launched a successful campaign for mayor of Moorhead, a role he would serve in for the next 22 years. During this time, Lanning also worked as vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Concordia. It was here that he pioneered the development of a student leadership program that continues to help students to this day.

In 2001, Lanning ran for the Minnesota House of Representatives, and the next year, he began this new career. As a Republican legislator, Lanning earned recognition for his advocacy on behalf of non-profit arts. He also worked for comprehensive border cities legislation, pension reform, poverty solutions and state funding for flood mitigation, and was integral in the Minnesota Vikings stadium legislation.

The Vikings legislation was controversial, and when Lanning retired in 2012 after serving five terms in the House of Representatives, he asserted that it did not drive him from his public service career, but did test him. His diplomacy skills prevailed. The Democratic Minneapolis mayor at the time declared that Lanning was a savvy politician who managed many viewpoints inside and outside of his party and built partnerships beyond party boundaries if it meant achieving a goal.

Throughout Lanning’s 38 years of public service, he held numerous leadership positions in city, state and regional organizations. He authored legislation to move the state’s water management governance to a basin and watershed system, founded the International Coalition for Land and Water Stewardship in the Red River Basin, and founded the Red River Basin Commission, serving as its first chairman. Lanning also served as delegate to the Legislator’s Forum and a member of the Steering Committee for 10 years.

In recent years, he has stayed active in the community. In 2013, Lanning was elected to serve on the Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation’s board of directors, the same year Concordia College honored him as a distinguished alumnus. In 2014, Lanning was a chairman for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign.

He currently operates Morrie Lanning Consulting, LLC, offering consulting services on issues such as water resource management, government relations and organizational leadership.

e have named Morrie Lanning the recipient of the 2015 Legacy Leader Award, which recognizes and emphasizes the important role

and contributions of long-time local leaders in both shaping and serving The Chamber, metropolitan community and region. Lanning will be honored at The Chamber’s Annual Meeting on September 24 at the Holiday Inn in Fargo.

Morrie Lanning moved a lot growing up, even attending 36 different schools. But in 1956, his father decided to buy a business in Moorhead, and it was then the Lanning family began putting down permanent roots in the area. Lanning’s start in politics came when he ran for student body president of Moorhead High School and won. He also served as co-captain of his football team, and he went on to play football at Concordia College, where he played with Gary Larsen, a man later named to the all-time Minnesota Vikings team.

After graduating in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and history-political science from Concordia, Lanning began working for his alma mater. He earned a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from North Dakota State University in 1968 and then married his wife, Ruthie, and began a family as well as a political career shortly after.

BNSF Railway has played an important role in the region’s economy for more than a century. Today, the railroad serves as a vital transportation link for agricultural and energy industries, and it delivers a wide variety of consumer products to retailers and businesses. To meet the growing demand in the region and to operate safely, BNSF is making significant investments in its rail infrastructure in North Dakota and Minnesota. Dale Trepanier, superintendent of operations, and Amy McBeth, director of public affairs, will give an overview of BNSF operations and efforts to reduce risk and further improve safety on the railroad.

Tomorrow’s workforce is made up of today’s students. To bridge the gap between employment in the region and students that will soon fill those roles, it’s important to connect the two today. Leaders of the five area colleges – Dean Bresciani, president of NDSU, William Craft, president of Concordia College, Dr. Joseph Bessie, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs of

Minnesota State University Moorhead, John Richman, North Dakota State College of Science and Dr. Carrie Brimhall, vice president and chief academic officer of Minnesota State Technical College, will all gather to address these issues with the business community.

We’ll discuss new initiatives that schools are working on, their plans to develop students for jobs that are relevant for today’s society, how business and higher education can work together and what employers can expect from higher education institutions in our area to develop the type of workers that we need.

At August’s Eggs & Issues, we shared the results of a recent comprehensive workforce study, which was commissioned by The Chamber, along with the Economic Development Corporation, Fargo-Moorhead Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, FM Area Foundation and United Way of Cass-Clay. The study examined a concern many employers have had in the metro recently: not enough qualified workers to fill job openings. We gathered the leaders of all five organizations to share the research from the study as well as tactical solutions we’re looking at to tackle this issue as a community.

Jim Gartin from the EDC shared an overview of the statistics and notable findings: Right now, there are about 7,000 open jobs in Cass County. We have workers coming in from 11 surrounding counties. It is projected that we will see 30,000 new job openings in the next five years. Degrees being awarded at area colleges aren’t lining up with employer demand.

One suggestion from TIP Strategies was to “embrace the cold” here and start a winter festival between all three metro cities, and at this event, Charley Johnson of the CVB officially announced that the North of Normal Winter Games can be expected this January.

Sher Thomsen of United Way discussed other factors we may need to change to make jobs more attractive and accessible to current residents, including making public transportation, housing and day care more affordable and available to all members of the community. She shared that currently, we are only meeting 50% of the day care demand, and that may be a factor inhibiting some parents from working.

Tim Beaton shared that the biggest need is in the low-wage jobs in the area, and made note that we have to be welcoming to New Americans. Gartin issued a call-to-action for event attendees to participate in committees devoted to regular discussions as we try to solve this

community-wide challenge. The sold-out event filled the room at the Radisson. It’s clear this is an issue the business community cares about and is of utmost

importance, and we are excited to get to work. Please join us in the efforts! If you’d like to join a committee, please contact any of the five steering committee organizations.

LFMWF Kicks off the YearLast month, the Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo class kicked off the year by diving

right in! One of the perks of this program is the opportunity to build connections with the other participants, and to help that happen we focused our day on communication styles training and networking skills. Dawn Kaiser shared with the class the importance of being an active listener and then helped us assess our own communication styles to better understand how to communicate effectively with those around us. Along with some icebreakers, guided networking activities and preparing for future sessions, the day was full of fun and excitement. It is apparent that this class is ready to develop their skills as leaders and submerse themselves in our community. We look forward to the next nine months with this class! A special thank you to the Boy Scouts of America - Northern Lights Council and Rasmussen College for hosting our August session.

A Proactive Approach to Workplace Violence

Saying Yes When You Want to Say No

When violence occurs in the workplace, it is too late. Often, the best approach is to be proactive and take steps to help prevent it in the first place, as well as increasing awareness about it. In this session, Joel Vettel, a lieutenant with the

Fargo Police Department, will talk about just this topic. Learn to recognize potential warning signs of workplace violence to address the problem before tragedy strikes. He’ll also cover ways to be proactive in addressing aggressive behavior and how to verbally de-escalate volatile situations. Attendees will learn how to recognize and respond to warning signs of workplace violence, including verbal and non-verbal cues, and techniques to de-escalate aggressive behavior.

Vettel received a bachelor of science degree from NDSU and a master’s degree from the University of Mary. He is a 2009 graduate of Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety and a 2013 Graduate of the FBI National Academy. Vettel lectures extensively on the issue of personal safety, workplace violence and dealing with aggressive people.

In today’s world, so many people are busy. It seems we tend to wear the word “busy” as a badge of honor. Being highly involved in our workplaces, family and community is the new expectation. But let’s be honest: It can feel like being

a hamster on a wheel! Both men and women alike may struggle to say no even when we’d rather not commit to something. Why do we do this, especially when the urge to please others can be a significant barrier to personal and professional success? Rebecca Undem, transparency advocate for the Dale Carnegie Business Group of ND and How Mommy Got Her Groove Back, will talk to attendees about saying no, including the common factors that keep you from saying no and the impact people pleasing has on our success. We’ll learn a process to be more selective with opportunities and leave feeling renewed and able to re-prioritize our lives. It’s time to take back your time and make decisions for you, not others! Undem’s authentic delivery style is the perfect mix of heart and strategy, and attendees can plan to leave with a plan for lasting results.

August’s Business Training presenters Renee Lura and Mike Mitchell from Infuse Solutions opened with a trick question, asking event attendees who was a leader. The point: We are all a leader somewhere, even if not in the workplace. Over delicious lasagna and popovers at Baymont Inn & Suites, we learned about emotional intelligence versus IQ and how to transfer those skills into success on the job. Attendees all left with three homework assignments to help them realize what kind of emotional response they have and how to start putting their new skills to use.

Public Relations AmbassadorsIt has been a very busy year with the Public Relations Ambassadors! The

Chamber cannot thank our Public Relations Ambassadors enough! They are always up for a challenge and never fail to impress our members with how many of them show up along with their support. In all, this past year we have had 156 ribbon cuttings!

The Chamber took Wayne Saar by surprise when we told him we were naming the Ambassador of the Year award after him because of his dedication to the Ambassador program for 34-plus years, his leadership to his community and teammates, and his support of downtown Fargo before it was even a “thing” – characteristics that we look for in all our ambassadors. The first of many to receive this inaugural award of “Wayne Saar Ambassador of the Year” award went to Donn Groth from Midwest Radio Fargo Moorhead.

Coincidentally, Saar was Groth’s first captain when he came onto the ambassador team 25 years ago and Groth still remembers the phone call he got from Saar to let him know he has to step it up a bit if he wants to remain an ambassador! The advice worked, because Groth has an average of 87% attendance at all the ribbon cuttings from this year, which is huge considering we had 156 celebrations, being the lead at multiple ribbon cuttings, willingness to lend a hand wherever he can at Chamber events and his commitment to the community. Thank you again for all that you do!

Lead From Any Seat in the House

Our ability to positively impact and lead those around us is much more than a position or title may lead us to believe. We all have the opportunity to exercise leadership each and every day whether we sit at the front desk, in the corner office or in a cubicle next to the water cooler. This session will

explore three factors that, when implemented, will allow you to increase your leadership capacity and begin to make a greater difference in your organization immediately, no matter your position. Jess Almlie, learning and development trainer at Discovery Benefits, Inc. will help attendees to assess their current skills and create a personalized action item for immediate implementation upon return to the workplace.

Almlie adapted this session from Patrick Lencioni’s work on healthy organizations and teams. The presentation can be used to improve individual leadership capacity, the accountability and fulfillment of

those you manage, and as a guide in planning any program where people are involved.

Almlie is a collaborative leader who thrives on creating clarity, building strong teams and developing leaders through training and mentorship. A skilled and engaging facilitator, she developed a comprehensive student leadership program at Concordia College, worked with volunteer leaders at Prairie Heights, and is currently a Learning & Development Trainer at Discovery Benefits, Inc. She is a facilitator for the 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program and Event Lead for Leadercast Fargo-Moorhead.

Leading for the Long Run

Dr. Anne Blackhurst, president at Minnesota State University Moorhead, has more than 30 years of higher education and leadership experience, and this September she brings her expertise to Women Connect. Blackhurst served as provost and senior vice president

at MSUM before becoming the 11th president in 2014. She is a marathon runner who uses running as a metaphor for understanding and enhancing leadership.

This event will focus on taking a long-term perspective on career and leadership development. Blackhurst will share the insights she wishes she had known early in her own career and how she has incorporated those lessons into her current leadership role to increase her effectiveness and longevity. She will also discuss lessons learned through training and running marathons and how those lessons apply to leadership and leadership development. Join us and learn strategies to help you prioritize and gain tools to maintain physical, mental

and emotional stamina for great leadership.

July RecapJuly’s Women Connect was all about health from the inside

out. On July 28, we were joined by three speakers that engaged attendees on how to invest in and take of themselves. Dr. Lacey Krebsbach, Sanford Health, Kristen Burbank, Mojo Fit Studios and Shannon Charpentier, Charpentier Creative, spoke about finding balance, and attendees all received spa gifts to take home, compliments of Sanford Health! Krebsbach discussed stress, how it affects our bodies and how to manage it. Burbank shared tips to calm your mind and fit in daily exercise even into a busy lifestyle. She even guided us through a brief meditation practice! Charpentier enlightened us on what foods to avoid and how to make better dietary choices. As she advised, “Eat as if your life depends on it, because it does.”

Page 19: The Bridge, September 2015

Matt Lachowitzer’s humble beginnings are what make him most surprised about his recent award as Entrepreneur of the Year at this year’s ChamberChoice, but it’s also what makes him so successful. Lachowitzer is laid-back and practical, and this same business approach is likely what has led his company to such steady growth.

Though he is currently the owner and founder of Matt’s Automotive Service Center, Lachowitzer got his start right at

home. Growing up on a Minnesota farm where you learn to fix things yourself and working at a Cenex in high school got him on track to his current road to success. After a football injury that changed his initial plans, he went to school to pursue diesel mechanics, but after his sister was diagnosed with a brain tumor, his plans changed again, and he found himself working at a new car dealership. Over the years he spent working in various new car dealerships, he saw areas in the business he felt could be run differently, and took the leap to open his own business to run it the way that he wanted.

His initial vision was to own just a small shop with him and one other employee, but it grew faster than he ever imagined. In June 2009, the first shop opened in Moorhead, which was expanded shortly after, and then expanded again in 2012, earning the title of largest independently owned shop in Moorhead. In 2014, he opened a second shop in Fargo and now has a total of 14 full-time employees.

With his hands-on approach and experience, Lachowitzer says that the hardest thing was transitioning from a technician to a business owner. “[It] was tough for me to put down my tools and not go out there to work,” he said, adding that he quickly also learned that he can’t do everything and “I’ve got to let my people make mistakes so they can learn.”

He reminds how important it is to not be afraid of failure, because you never know what could happen if you don’t try. His own shop is proof that success can happen if you simply go for it.

The other component, he says, is surrounding yourself with good people and having a strong support system. “Without my wife and kids, I don’t know if this place would have got where it is,” he said.

One of Lachowitzer’s goals is to change the perception of auto service centers, and he does that a few ways. “I believe that a customer who knows and understands what is going in with their car and is educated properly, can make better decisions when it comes to the care of their car,” he said.

It’s this commitment to his customers that lead him to see the importance of educating the community, and he gives back by teaching local classes and interactive seminars to share his own knowledge of cars.

He also sees the importance of giving back to the community beyond just auto-related issues, and he makes sure to donate and participate in events and sponsorships whenever he can to the causes that need it, including many cancer-related causes and local sports teams.

But his own staff is also quite important to Lachowitzer. While most other auto centers pay employees on a commission, Lachowitzer pays everyone on his staff a salary. “I believe in a team and family atmosphere, and I believe that my customers can see that, because we’re not just trying to sell them something,” he said.

Matt’s is also different because Lachowitzer claims they offer the area’s best repair warranty. In addition, he’s invested in the best technology for the shop and offers dealership-level equipment so they can best serve all vehicles that come through the shop.

Looking ahead, Lachowitzer hopes to open yet another facility within the next five years. He sees this one – which he says will be the last one in the area for him – as a body and detail shop with used cars for sale as well, with his same set of values at the core of it.

His humble ambitions are further reflected in what he says is the most rewarding thing about his business: fixing a problem that someone has and making it go away. “Whether as a mechanic or business owner in general, making that stressful situation into something that is not stressful anymore, is very rewarding for me.”
