July – the real beginning of the summer, with its promise of barbecueweather, alfresco living andThe Summer Holiday. In my youth that wasthe one and only holiday we kids could expect; every year the family carwas loaded up with tents and primus stove and we did intrepid things inthe highlands of rainy, midge-infested Scotland for a fortnight. Nowadayswe expect rather more in the way of luxury and certainly more than onetrip away from home.

Well, I do anyway. This June I took a week’s trip to the Scilly Isles. Lestyou think I neglected my duty towards the magazine, I took advantage of a couple’sconfession that they lived further upriver in Shrewsbury to ask them to write something forthe magazine. They didn’t, but did send a paparazzi shot of your editor pretending not to beseasick.

Why not send someThoughts FromAbroad to the Bridge? It would be fun to hear what ourtownspeople do while they’re away. And to all of you who are going to be here during thesummer, let’s remember there are plenty of people who choose to come to us for theirholiday. (Lucky us; we don’t have to go home after a fortnight! )

We have plenty to keep us amused during the month. There are details inside so with thehope that the weather treats us kindly, I wish you all a happy July.

Margaret

John Ruskin Exhibition at BewdleyMuseumArt enthusiasts will have the rare opportunity to view work fromJohn Ruskin’s personal art collection at Bewdley Museum thissummer.

The exhibition can be viewed daily in the museum’s Wyre ForestGallery between 10am and 4.30pm (last entry 4pm) fromSaturday 2nd July to Sunday 7th August.

A group of 40 objects including watercolours, drawings, prints andbooks are on loan from the Collection of the Guild of St George, which is housed andmaintained by Museums Sheffield.

Ruskin was an influential Victorian writer and art critic who championed artists such asWilliam Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites. In the 1880s, he intended to move part of thecollection to Bewdley and had plans drawn up for a museum. The project never came aboutbecause of a lack of funding and Ruskin’s declining health.

Ruskin founded the Guild of St George in 1871 to help create a better world. His aims wereto turn wasteland into food-producing plots, to protect wildlife, to educate all people inschools and to open public libraries and galleries as a ‘national store’ for all people. His visioncontinues today through the activities, properties and woodland that the Guild owns inBewdley – Uncllys Farm and Ruskinland.

Workshops based on Ruskin’s teachings on nature and architecture will be held at themuseum on 16th July and 23rd July.

For more information visit www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk or telephone the museum office on 01299 403573.

New course on pig keeping for existing and potential

small holdersFor people who want to look into owning a smallholding or those who want to gain moreexperience, a new series of courses is available. The next course is an introduction to pig keepingon the 29th July at Uncllys Farm, Bewdley. Thecourse is free and subsidised by the Grow with Wyre Lottery Project and there is only a£10 booking fee.

The course is being run by Mark Cleaver, a local farm manager who has extensiveexperience in managing livestock and nature conservation. “This course is ideal for anyonewho would like to find out more about looking after and checking livestock” said Mark. “Pigs are an excellent way to start as they do not need a large amount of space and theyare easy to look after. All our courses includes information on the legal and moral duties oflivestock keepers, codes of practice, key welfare issues and practical ways to monitor animalhealth.”

Wyre Community Land Trust is based at a working farm and supports land owners, smallholders and farmers through training, practical help and the loan of tools and equipment. Itprovides a wide range of accredited courses available for both land owners and volunteerswhich are subsidised, mainly through the Heritage Lottery Fund. These include sustainablewoodland management, livestock welfare, fruit pressing and cider making.

Full details are available from Mark on 01299 488083 email [email protected]

…to take part in asummer reading

challenge.Yes that's right; this year we are runningan adult summer reading challengealongside our usual children's one.

All you have to do is read six booksover the summer period.

They don't have to be the thick, selfimproving sort – they can even bebooks you think you might enjoy – andat Bewdley Library you can win a signedbook if you're the first adult tocomplete.

This summer's children's challenge has aCircus theme. If you're here signing thekids up for their reading challenge, whynot sign yourself up as well?

The usual conditions apply; you cancount two books per visit towards yourtotal.

In addition to winning a signed book, the first adult and child to complete willalso be entered into a countywide drawwith the chance to win another prize.

Let's have the library buzzing over thesummer!

Practice – life at RiversideVets as seen by Gavin the

practice cat.

Hi everybody. I expect you’rewondering where I’ve been.

Well, actually I’ve been over at the Bridgemagazine headquarters having a brisk wordwith that incompetent editor. Do you know, she had the cheek to lose my last twoarticles? And after all the trouble I went to,borrowing my humans’ dictionary to putsome really long words into my articles? I’mglad to say that after sobbing for severalhours she promised to do better and give mea prime site in the next edition and buy me abig tin of my favourite food. So anyway, I hope you all enjoyed the recentsunny weather. I’ve had a relaxing break frommy daily patrol around the practice and haveused my time to catch up on several cat napsand many cuddles with my humans. Some ofyou may remember that I wrote last springabout some ducklings from a nest in aneighbouring garden that were helped to theriver by my humans. This year our motherduck came back to the same spot again andmanaged to produce even more offspringthan last year – 14 to be exact! Ourneighbours at the practice kindly let us knowwhen the ducklings were ready to leave thenest and I was able to observe them as theycrossed the road and floated down to theriver. My humans here were very excited recentlyas one of our vets Ruth got married at theend of May. Being a cat I was not able toattend, but I am looking forward to seeing allthe photos. As I am a highly educated cat Iplan to offer my considered opinion once Ihave had a little snooze.More from me again next month as I thinkI’ve sorted out the editor, Gavin

Gardening in JulyAs I prepare July’s notes Radio 4 announces the West Midlands is just outside the DroughtArea, so in an effort to encourage some rain, here are some tips on conserving plants andwater. If it’s not too late dig organic matter into your soil before planting; for deep-rootedcrops add paper and shredded carpet to the bottom of trenches. On the top of the soiladd a good layer of mulch to keep weeds at bay and retain water, placing pebbles or stoneson troughs, hanging baskets or beds will also help. Line containers to stop water runningthrough to waste and keep in the shade when possible to reduce rapid evaporation.Choosing plants for drought conditions is still an option as bedding plants wilt; Englishlavender, geraniums, herbs and shrubs will thrive better in dry conditions. Collecting waterfor use can be easily achieved with water butts, apparently there is enough rainfall in eventhe driest areas to fill 150 butts from an average household roof. That should be enough toget everyone through the driest 6 weeks of summer. Water from the house can be recy-cled onto plants, washing up water, bath water and water drawn off before the hot tapruns hot can be used. Grey water is better for plants than vegetable crops in order toavoid infections. Grey water from washing machines, dish washers, tumble driers etc.should be avoided as they may degrade soil quality over time because of their chemicalcomposition, similarly avoid water with bleaches. Watering is best done late in the eveningwhen there is less evaporation, water well but less frequently, use water absorbing gels incontainers, screen plants to keep them shaded and break up wind and finally don’t cut thelawn too often, once a fortnight and with the cutters raised is enough in a drought.

Community News

It's been two months since the last itemabout establishing an allotment at The HopPole.

Lack of rain

Since then, like many other gardens, theallotment has suffered from the lack of rainand the strong drying winds which havescorched some of the newly plantedvegetables.

The climbing beans and sweet peas inparticular have struggled but the first sweetpea flower buds are now showing. The localpigeons have also left their mark, swooping inand almost clearing young kale, broccoli, cabbage and beetroot plants.

Some of the plants have responded to arescue package of watering and a protectionof netting and twiggy branches but theeventual harvest will be smaller thanexpected. However, we are not far offharvesting the broad beans and peas andthere have been constant cuttings of cut andcome again salad greens and pea shootsgrown in containers.

Our New Additions

A new addition has been the flock of sixrescued battery hens. They were a sorrysight when they arrived just over a monthago. Their combs were floppy and pale andthey had very few feathers as a consequence

of being kept in tinybattery hen cages. Butwithin 48 hours theybegan to pick up andwere enjoying beingoutside for the firsttime in their lives.

Although one hendidn't survive thetransition to free range living it has beenheart-warming to see the rest sunbathingand having dust baths as well as foraging inthe open for tasty titbits from the soil.

Now their feathers are growing back andthey are emerging as individual characterswith an established pecking order.

We have even been rewarded with theoccasional egg, far sooner than we were toldit would take for them to come into layagain. They have been quite a talking pointand a hit with visiting children.

Tomatoes and hanging baskets

In the meantime Stephen Clee has kindlyallowed us to use his greenhouse to raiseour tomatoes which now are showing theirfirst flower trusses and the hanging basketshave been planted up and are waiting to goout. We are even thinking of entering“Bewdley in Bloom”!

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 6th JUNE 2011

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee June 2012

With the Queen having formally announced that celebrations for her Diamond Jubilee willtake place over the long Bank Holiday week-end of 2nd to 5th June, the Town Council hasset up a Working Group to work with schools and voluntary organisations to seek ideas andthen arrange some suitable party or celebratory event. It’s hoped similar activities will occurthroughout the country.

Police Sergeant Chris Aimes

Bewdley’s well known and respected Police Sergeant is shortly to be redeployed toKidderminster but as a tribute to the valuable work he has done it was agreed the Mayorwould write to him and express her thanks on behalf of the Town for his service and advicewhich he has always given in a very practical and fair way.

Bewdley Members of Parliament Roll

Councillors warmly welcomed the offer by Bewdley Civic Society to arrange for a newwooden display board to be hung in the Council Chamber listing the Members of Parliamentrepresenting the Borough of Bewdley from 1832 through to 1945. At present the roll finishesat 1880 and hence fails to record those that served for the following 65 years includingStanley Baldwin who was returned to Parliament at ten successive General Elections.

Street Amenity Licences

The Town Council was consulted by the District Council as to two applications by The Cock& Magpie and The Mug House to extend the hours at which food and drink could be servedat the tables and chairs outside on the footpath until midnight. Councillors felt that was toolate and recommended the hours of operation be limited to 11.00pm.

Blackstone Picnic Site and Blackstone Riverside Park

The Council learned how easy it was to get confused between these two sites which, thoughclose to one another, were on opposite sides of the river. Examples were given of howwalking groups intending to go to the Riverside Park on the west mistakenly thought theirdestination was the Picnic Site on the east and vice versa. Councillors agreed with asuggestion that the Riverside Park should instead be renamed Ribbesford Riverside Park.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

Home baking to support for MotorNuerone research

As many of you know all the money made from myhomebaking in St. Anne’s Church now goes to supportthe Motor Neurone charity. Motor neurone disease isa serious and incurable condition where, over time, thenerves in the brain and spine experience a progressiveloss of function. This affects people’s ability to walk, speak, breathw and swallow.

Research

I have been asked if I could help fund research intomotor nuerone being carried by Dr Robin Highley. Heis working at Sheffield University which is a centre ofexcellence for neurodegeneration.

Dr Highley is hopeful that his project will generateimportant information about the chain of events thatcause motor neurones to degenerate. Such knowledge could be used to develop drugsdesigned to slow disease progression.

Would you like to help?

Ask me to bake a cake and give me loads of money for it. Your money could help make abreakthrough!!

Please!!!Thanks Cate Gillespie (402151)

This is the height of summer when mostbirds will have finished rearing their firstbroods and may be onto their second. Thebird boxes which were put up in ourorchards to encourage some of the rarerwoodland birds have produced a good cropof blue tits and great tits, while the redstartschose to nest in our wood pile! We hope tosee flycatchers hunting in the fields, perchingon the fence posts in between their huntingflights.

The spring’s prodigious spawning of toadsproduced hundreds of young and I watchedmany tiny toads, less than 1cm long, leavingthe pond of their birth a monthago. Now they will be among thevegetation, feeding on smallinvertebrates and trying to evadecapture by predators. Like frogsand newts, toads are often foundunder logs and rocks where theycan keep cool and moist, althoughtoads are much more resistant todry soil conditions than theothers.

As you walk in the woods look out for thetiny footprints of fallow fawns out and aboutwith their mothers for the first time. Duringthe first week or so of their lives they liequietly concealed in undergrowth where thedoes return periodically to feed them.

Among our events listed below there is anopportunity for local communityorganisations and businesses to look roundthe new Discovery Centre to see whetherthey can benefit from its unique features.Chat to the staff and enjoy some lightrefreshments from 3pm to 6pm.
