Message to MembersDear Chamber Members:

With great pride we watched the North Dakota State University Bison football team pursue and claim a third consecutive FCS National Championship title, and all the players and coaches should be commended on their hard work and dedication. Their efforts have been rewarded in the best way possible.

As the revelry abounds, we celebrate their efforts and offer our congratulations to the football team and the entire athletic department at NDSU. As the voice of business in the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo metropolitan region, The Chamber represents more than 2,100 member businesses. As such, we support all the educational institutions in the area

for creating a well-trained future workforce, but, equally as important, for contributing mightily to our local economy.

When ESPN made the decision to highlight NDSU and Fargo by hosting College GameDay here in September, we had an opportunity to tell a story about our community that many had never heard before. The show afforded a national spotlight that focused on the appeal of our community, the contributions of a research university and the caliber of athletes competing within the NDSU athletic department.

But the success of the NDSU football program equates to more than just athletic superiority. It translates to increased visibility for our community, which envelops more people within the local economy, leading to greater business success. On any Bison football game day, people descend on Fargo Moorhead West Fargo in droves, frequenting retailers, restaurants and coffee shops. NDSU’s annual economic impact totaled $884 million in 2011, according to an analysis commissioned by the university in 2012 and conducted by Idaho-based Economic Modeling Specialists International. NDSU operations contributed $201.2 million in annual income, according to a Dec. 28, 2012 article in The Forum of Fargo Moorhead. That annual income translates to dollars spent in our community, creating an indelible connection between the university and our thriving business economy.

When the ESPN crew broadcasted College GameDay in front of the historic Fargo Theatre, the message was loud and it was profound: Fargo is a great place to live, work and raise a family, and now the nation knows why. Forget the woodchipper, the extreme cold temperatures, the silly accents made famous in a movie that premiered decades ago. Those are mere details in the portrait of Fargo Moorhead West Fargo; the real image depicts the people, the community and the dynamic economy we enjoy. That imagery is embedded within Fargo Moorhead West Fargo and actually supersedes championship titles.

Coach Craig Bohl, his staff and his players have placed NDSU and Fargo on a national map in a serious and superlative way. We thank them for everything they have done to contribute to a successful business economy; we wish Bohl the best of luck as he pursues new goals at the University of Wyoming, and we’re excited to see how Chris Klieman will continue building the legacy that is Bison football. Again, congratulations on an incredible season and another FCS National Championship. You, the Bison football team, have our sincere gratitude.

Thank you for your membership,

Craig WhitneyPresident/CEOThe Chamber

Wednesday, February 26 | 8 to 9:30 a.m.Ramada Plaza & Suites and Conference Center

Many of our conversations these days revolve around the economy, whether discussing workforce issues, regulation, or what the future holds. At the annual Economic Outlook Forum, you will learn how the various industries and trends are affecting our local and regional economies.

Regional TrendsDirector of the Office of Management and Budget Pam Sharp has spent the past 11 years studying North Dakota’s economy and the different sectors that contribute to it. She will discuss the various economic factors within different areas of North Dakota and what’s driving each factor.

Economic Impact of the Health Care IndustryHealth care and the economy have a complex relationship, and navigating the complexities is difficult and often confusing. Learn what makes the relationship so multifaceted as Ross Manson from Eide Bailly, LLP, dives into the different aspects of health care and its effect on the economy. Manson will draw on his more than 15 years of experience with health care entities to highlight what your business needs to know.

Local TrendsAccording to the online financial news service 24/7 Wall St., North Dakota and Minnesota were two of the fastest-growing states in 2012. The list is created after examining the gross domestic product figures provided by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Jim Gartin, president of the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation, will explain the local trends at play in the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo metro area and what factors will contribute to the long-term viability and sustainability for our economy.

Economic Outlook Survey Results PresentationDan Staller of Starion Financial will reveal the results of our Economic Outlook Survey, conducted by the Department of Management and Marketing at North Dakota State University. Staller has worked in business banking in the metro area for more than a decade and has more than 16 years of banking experience as a credit analyst, commercial lender, manager and market president in North Dakota and Minnesota.

After our panelists have shared their insights, you can ask questions about the economy and how it will affect your business. Text your questions to 22333 using the keyword EOF14.

State of the Cities

Questions, Insight and Live Polls Featured at State of the Cities

With a fresh face on the stage and a sold-out crowd, the 2014 State of the Cities featured a variety of new elements that offered attendees excitement and insight. The mayors of Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo and Dilworth answered a number of questions regarding their city’s growth, future endeavors and the role of education and the arts. The discussion was moderated by Mark Nisbet, Excel Energy and Joel Heitkamp, KFGO-AM Mighty 790.

Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker addressed the issue of a new city hall/convention center, explaining that locations and funding options are being examined. The FARGODOME Authority is also awaiting the results of a feasibility study. Walaker said he preferred a

downtown location, and 71 percent of the audience agreed in a live text poll.

In a second live poll, 59 percent of the audience responded that comprehensive flood protection was the number one issue affecting the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo region. That poll gave Moorhead Mayor Del Rae Williams the opportunity to commend the previous Moorhead administration for its work, while West Fargo Mayor Rich Mattern explained that having a diversion in the city has been integral to West Fargo’s growth.

Another important issue the mayors addressed was education and the necessity to train a productive workforce, which was the second issue cited as most important in the region. Williams stated she would like to see a K-12 STEM center built in the city, and Walaker said educating students with the skills they need to succeed is vital. Dilworth Mayor Chad Olson echoed the sentiment. “If you want to have a fantastic workforce, give them a fantastic education.” Olson said.

If you missed the event, you can watch a broadcast on the public access channels of Fargo, West Fargo and Moorhead. Visit FMWFChamber.com/advocacy for broadcast times.

Advocacy in Action

Senator Heidi Heitkamp Offers Chamber Members Update

More than 60 people braved the cold, blustery winds on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day to hear Sen. Heidi Heitkamp talk about her first year in office and what she’s hoping to accomplish in 2014. Heitkamp focused on the two leading sectors of the North Dakota economy: agriculture and energy. She discussed the need for a new farm bill and why it is important to mitigate risk for farmers, the regulatory issues associated with the oil and gas industry as well as the challenges associated with the Keystone Pipeline. Although she commended the divided Congress for passing a budget for the first time since 1986, Heitkamp quoted former Sen. Byron Dorgan, who said “if you are nourished by accomplishment, you’re starving in the United States Congress.” Attendees encouraged her to be vigilant with environmental regulators and asked her questions on topics such as improved rail safety, flood insurance increases, and education and workforce development.

Look For 2014 Public Policy Guide in Membership Packet

The Public Affairs committee seeks to provide clarity on significant business issues in the annual Public Policy Guide. This publication includes a special message from Chamber President and CEO Craig Whitney, an updated directory of elected officials, along with policy statements on a variety of issues from flood protection to education, health care and more.

The 2014 Public Policy Guide will also be posted on FMWFChamber.com/advocacy.

Downtown Fargo Pilot Project Selected for Dakota Fiber Initiative

The Chamber continues to support the Dakota Fiber Initiative, an effort to expand bandwidth capacity in the metro and statewide. Developing an advanced digital infrastructure system to achieve the highest speed and bandwidth capacity available will take a considerable amount of partnering between providers and consumers. A downtown Fargo pilot project has been selected and pledges to support the initial phase are being collected.

Leadership Class Builds Strengths, Learns About the MediaThe January Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo session offered participants the opportunity to listen to area mayors, set goals, learn about emotional intelligence and hear ways to work with the media.

What is Your Unique Ability?Mark Lindquist, co-founder of Breath is Limited and Retirement Turning Point, gave an inspiring presentation on how to identify your own unique potential. Based on the 7 Mindsets approach, Lindquist asked, “What is your unique potential? What is the one thing you do better than anyone else? How can you make it better?” Lindquist infused singing, dancing and enthusiasm in his presentation to inspire the class to think about their strengths and how to build upon them.

Emotional Intelligence the Difference Between Top and Low Performers

Pam McGee, assistant professor in operations management at Minnesota State University Moorhead and principal of pMcGee & Company, talked about the importance of emotional intelligence for leaders. “Emotional intelligence is your ability to understand emotions in yourself and others and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships,” McGee said.

Emotional Intelligence is: Being aware of how emotions in “self and

others” affect the outcome. Having the right emotion for the right

situation. Being predictable with your emotions

instead of an emotional rollercoaster. Having empathy and influence.

Emotional Intelligence is NOT: Having no emotions at work. Never crying. Never getting angry. Always being nice. Letting feelings hang out. Only managing anger.

When a Reporter Calls…What if you were thrust into the spotlight and had to talk to the media? Would you know what to say? Would you have talking points developed? A media panel offered insight on what to do when a reporter calls and how their organization handles being in the media. Panelists included: Kristina Hein, United Way of Cass-Clay; Pat Claus, Fargo Police Department; Brian Shawn, American Red Cross – Red River Valley Chapter; and John Trierweiler, Valley News Live. Each panelist gave examples from their professional experiences and participated in a class activity.

Want to be in the Next Leadership Class? If you would like information on the Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo program, contact Camille at 218.359.0512 or [email protected]. Applications for the 2014-15 year open April 1.

What to do When a Reporter Calls: Ask the reporter questions: What is the story

about? What is your deadline? Who else did you interview?

Ask yourself a few questions: Who is my audience? What is my objective?

Develop your key points and short messages. Repeat key points. Use appropriate verbal and nonverbal cues.

Avoid these traps: repeating negative questions/phrases; responding to hypothetical questions; going “off the record” or saying “no comment.”

Military Matters

Exciting Opportunities for Honor Star Members in 2014

Most of us will never fully understand the experience of driving a Humvee convoy through unfriendly territory, launching a mortar round to surpress a target or looking through the sights of an M4 rifle. However, Honor Star members will have an opportunity to better understand those experiences by spending a day with Minnesota National Guard members as they conduct their annual training. The Military Affairs committee will be bringing this opportunity and others to Honor Star members in 2014. Please watch for more information to come in future Chamber messages.

We stopped by to visit the staff at Signarama, a Fargo-company that produces custom signs using the latest technology and high-quality products. The company specializes in creating and installing vehicle lettering, window graphics, site signs, digital printing, banners and any type of indoor or outdoor signage. Free consultations and estimates are available.

We visited the staff at Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation, North Dakota’s oldest and largest community foundation. This charitable giving resource for Cass and Clay counties consists of a collection of hundreds of charitable endowment funds that have been established by individuals, families, non-profit organizations and businesses. The earnings from these funds are distributed to charitable and educational programs to help meet the needs of the communities of Fargo and Moorhead and Cass and Clay counties.

We chatted with the staff at Dave’s West Fargo Tire & Service Center, which offers passenger car, light truck and SUV tires and off-road tires from industry leading manufacturers like Toyo, Nokian, Delta and National. The staff also completes auto repair, alignment, brake and other valuable automotive services that will keep your vehicle driving its best.

We also visited the staff at Avenue Right and caught them reading The Bridge. From TV, radio, social media and everything in between, Avenue Right eliminates the confusion and uncertainty of an increasingly fragmented media landscape by helping clients understand a target audience and how to effectively reach them.

Member ProfileSwanson Health Products Focuses on Safety, Satisfaction

Legend states it all began with a bulk order of vitamin E supplements and a simple advertisement placed in Capper’s Weekly magazine. Before long, Leland Swanson was running a successful mail-order business from the basement of his Fargo home.

Swanson Health Products has since outgrown its basement roots with locations in Fargo; Harrisburg, Penn.; and Sparks, Nev. A company with national presence and international reach, Swanson Health strives to bring its customers the highest quality products at the best price. With state-of-the-art warehouse locations in all three cities, Swanson Health provides quick delivery to anywhere in the country.

With only one store location in downtown Fargo, the majority of orders come through postal mail, phone calls or the website. This keeps the two call centers in Fargo busy 22 hours a day with customers calling from all over the world. Swanson Health is always prepared to knowledgably answer any questions that arise and gladly see that all customers’ needs are met. “One of our major concerns from the very beginning was that our customers would feel like we were treating them like real people, not just numbers or dollar signs,” President Lee Swanson, Jr., states on the company’s website. “We believe that our customers are our most important assets. That’s why we try to deal with our customers on a personal, one-to-one basis, not through pre-recorded messages.”

Safety is the very top priority at Swanson Health. The company has invested more than $1 million in an on-site research laboratory to create and test its own supplements to guarantee that it is reaching the strictly regulated Food and Drug Administration guidelines. According to Doug Anderson, corporate financial officer, the FDA guidelines have become increasingly strict over the last 10 years. “I think people are starting to pay more attention to what they are putting into their bodies,” said Nicole Ellis, the company’s public relations specialist. By making product safety and development a top priority, along with striving to exceed expectations within the increasingly strict FDA guidelines, Swanson Health continually follows the system of the Food and Drug Administration’s Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Corporate social responsibility is a concept Swanson Health takes seriously; the company works with Vitamin Angels, an organization that provides vitamins and supplements to at-risk women and children. Locally, Swanson Health is the headlining sponsor for the Fargo Marathon Health and Fitness Expo, providing attendants with sample products and a wealth of information regarding vitamins and supplements.

This summer Swanson Health will be celebrating their 45th year of operation. The company will be expanding the south Fargo location to increase office space and an expansion of the Pennsylvania warehouse is also in the works. Maintaining quality product development and safety as top priorities, Swanson Health hopes to expand their research facilities to provide customers with the best products possible.
