THE BOX SCORE SEPTEMBER 2009 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS SEASON TICKET HOLDERS MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP Since the announcement has now been made public, I cannot begin to express to you how excited I am to be reunited with the team I spent the eight most memorable seasons of my career with, including being a part of the World Champion- ship team in 2001. I am looking for- ward to rolling up my sleeves to help the organization win in many other ways. In my role with the D-backs as Special Assistant to the President and CEO, I will assist Derrick Hall and other departments throughout the baseball and business sides of the organization. You will see me continuing to make an impact in the community with the Arizona Dia- mondbacks Foundation, interact- ing with Season Ticket Holders like yourself at special events, meeting with corporate partners, filling in on the radio and television broadcasts, and spending time with our minor and Major League players to make sure they understand how special this organization really is. I will also be spending time with children at our Training Centers camps as well those men and women who have lifelong dreams of playing in the Ma- jor Leagues at our annual Fantasy Camp in January. I am especially passionate about a new youth base- ball academy I will be collaborating on with the D-backs, where children and teenagers will receive year- round instruction while also partici- pating in camps and tournaments. This organization has achieved so much success during 12 seasons in Major League Baseball. It is impera- tive that former players like myself, Mark Grace, Matt Williams and Jay Bell continue to build the tradition we already have throughout the or- ganization even though we are no longer wearing a D-backs uniform. Again, I’m excited about the chal- lenges and opportunities I now have during my second career in base- ball. I look forward to seeing dedi- cated D-backs fans like yourself at Chase Field. Sincerely, Luis Gonzalez Special Assistant to the President & CEO SEASON TICKET HEADQUARTERS Located behind Section 111 on Main Concourse The Season Ticket Headquarters is yet another resource available to you as a Season Ticket Holder. a CLOSER LOOK...d-backs Catcher Miguel Montero

Q - How long have you been a Season Ticket Holder? a - Out of state Season Ticket Holders from Davis, California, since

the D-backs inaugural season of 1998. We have averaged about 6 or 7 games a season with all unused tickets donated to the Explorer Club of the Phoenix Police Department or more recently, back to the D-backs for their own charitable use.

Q - What is your favorite aspect of being a Season Ticket Holder? a - Picking out the games we want to see and planning our trips to

Phoenix around them.

Q - Aside from winning the World Series in 2001, what is your favorite D-backs memory?

a - The security and patriotic spirit surrounding the 2001 World Series, considering the pain, fear and anger the country was feeling after 9/11. We were able to see all four games in Phoenix and the feeling of a national solidarity everywhere we went made us very proud to be Americans.

Q - If you were a D-backs player, what position would you play and what would your intro song be?

a - I would want to be a pitcher and my intro song would be “Just Older” by Bon Jovi.

Q - Who is your favorite D-backs player? a - Mark Reynolds.

Q - What is your favorite rivalry? a - Giants. We hate the Giants.

Q - Do you prefer a day game or a night game? a - Night game.

Q - Do you like the roof open or closed? a - Open.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTSDespite being used in limited duty, Montero’s 15 home runs from 2007-08 are tied for 11th among all Na-tional League catchers and tied for second among left-handed hitting backstops… he entered the 2007 season rated as the organization’s

fifth-best prospect and as the or-ganization’s best defensive catcher, according to Baseball America…led all rookies in 2007 with 3 pinch-hit home runs, 7 pinch-hit RBI and a pinch-hit average of .350 (7-for-20).

• Appeared in 53 games at catcher, including 45 starts, in serving as the backup catcher for the second con-secutive season.

• Began the season on the disabled list with a fractured right finger...saw action in 11 games for Tucson (AAA) during a rehab assignment prior to making season debut with the Dbacks on April 23 at Los Ange-les Dodgers.

• Tied a career-high by collecting 3 hits in a game on 3 occasions; April 30 vs. Houston, July 11 at Philadel-phia and Aug. 16 at Houston.

• 2007 Postseason Highlights: Saw action in 1 NLDS game vs. Chicago, going 0-for-2 with a walk…played in 3 NLCS games against Colorado, batting .400 (2-for-5).

PERSONAL INFORMATION• Miguel Angel Montero Fernandez.

• Married to Vanessa.

• Attended Nuestra Senora la Es-peranza High School in Caracas, Venezuela.

yahoo Sports— Jeff Passan

More evidence that Dan Haren is the business: He’s got the best splitter in baseball (7.2 runs above average), the fourth-best cutter (13.7 above average) and the fifth-best fastball (19.3 above average).

CBS Sportsline— Larry Dobrow

Mark Reynolds isn’t just the only guy able to hit the ball out of CitiField with any consistency; he’s the only one who does it with Kingman pa-nache. Reynolds’ blasts are dingers of heroic grandeur, and should be commemorated with a limited-edition coin set.

ESpN.com— Keith Law

Ranked the D-backs as having the best player selections among the 30 MLB teams in this year’s First-Year Player Draft that occurred June 9-11. “The D-backs had a slew of picks, but un-like some other teams with extra selections, they made them count, grabbing six players from my top 100. They mixed in the usual D-back-safe-college-guy picks, but added some upside with two good high school bats in Bobby Borchering and Matt Davidson, a potential impact middle in-fielder in prep shortstop Chris Owings, and a late wild card in local product Matt Helm, a commit to the University of Arizona who probably would have gone within the top five rounds if he hadn’t been hurt so much of his senior spring. The D-backs had a budget to work with but didn’t punt any picks or go excessively cheap on the first day, and they roped in a good mix of potential impact players and safe prospect depth.”
