W here art thou, whence comest thou and dost thou have any heavy baggage? How might we guide thee to thy destination in business if thy starting point remains unknown to us, like a

boat upon a great open sea with its radar on the blink?

Prologue

Y et may we divine certain truths; for it is evident that you dwell and work in a state of dissatisfaction. Perchance thou dost toil and labour in thy field, desirous of a lofty position to which you have long aspired. Perchance thou hast attained

such a position, yet it resembleth not the vision which came to you in your dreams. Perchance thou art beset on all sides by woes and troubles unforeseen. For were the roses in thy garden in full bloom, thou wouldst not take this book in thy hand in search of solutions.

T hen say we unto thee, be not afraid. Beareth not the hump of the camel.Thou art not alone, for difficulties are as natural as the rising and setting of the sun. In the words of the ancient sages, shit doth happen.

But where shouldst thou turn when problems bar your way? Who canst thou trust?

Prologue

The value of a Principle is the number of things it

will explain.

Principles

In the land of Albania it is said...

WE BELIEVE IN

BUSINESS

Prologue

P rinciples that endure as long as time. Principles of solid truth, not shifting sand. Principles upon which a great and glorious temple may be built. Upon such principles have we built our own temple. And we did look upon it and say it is good. And it shall be called...

Prologue

Behold the pillars of the temple, which are the pillars of Knowledge and Understanding. Behold the grand windows, which are the windows of Illumination and Enlightenment. Behold the gargoyles, which are the gargoyles of Tough and Scary Times. Be guided by the elders of The Department, for they have acquired much wisdomat the School of Experience and the University of What Works. They have travelled far; they have manufactured and sold the T-shirt at the market place. They may lead thee towards thy destination, not with commandments and conjecture, but through questions. And more questions. And once again we say unto thee, questions. For that way true greatness lies.

Prologue

‘Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.Do not believe in anything merely on the

authority of your teachers and elders.Do not believe in traditions because

they have been handed down for many generations.

But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason

and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all.

Then accept it and live up to it.’

Prologue

T hou shouldst, we exhort thee, question even this book. Wise are those who keep it close at hand for guidance – in their glove compartment, on their bedside table and in their not-at-all effeminate, metrosexual man-bag. But

wiser still are those who challenge it as they read. (Though not aloud when on public transport, lest thou dost appear a bit nuts.) Follow us now, that thou mightst meet a man whose questions may be likened unto arrows; arrows aimed at the wrong target and missing the point.
