From this establishing shot w a man in a wide/long shot walking
out of what is presumably a prison due to the indications of there
being a police car in the front of the shot and their also being
bodyguards being seen in a wide/longshot as well. At this point it
is unclear to the audience as to what is going on due to the
uncertainty of the police car.
In the second shot we have switched to a closer longshot on the
man who has got out of the police car. The audience will still be
unsure as to what relation this man could be due to his appearance
wearing a smart suit. This man (Dan Akroyd) is also positioned
directly of the middle of the shot showing that he has an important
role. At this stage there has been no non-diegetic sound.
men Following on from this we see that the man greet each other
back in the wide/longshot where they are both seen to be getting
into the same car, however the audience is now aware that the men
know each other, this is further enhanced by the non-diegetic music
that can be herd being a blues song, which settles the mood and
follows the style of editing that has been used.
From this mid-shot we see both of the men sitting in the car
whilst there being no conversation in the car. This could reflect
the mood between the two as they may have not seen each other for a
long period of time. This may also be used to give an indication
from the music being played as to what the film is about or where
they are going.
At this stage we are now seeing conversation being made but also
the camera switching from side to side using the 180 degree rule.
The audience is still unclear as to what is going on as there has
been no indication of a plan of action or what they are meant to be
doing.
From the driver ignoring the signs and trying to go over the
bridge to prove a point to the passenger shows the type of
characters that they are of them which is challenging the law and
being risk takers. This may be a theme and represent how the
characters act in the rest of the film.
In this medium close up we see our characters discussing the
car. In this we can still hear a combination of diegetic and
non-diegetic sound whilst this is happening as well. The audience
is still unclear as to what is going on with the brothers as
well.
Next we see the car travelling whilst being filmed on a fixed
axis and the use of a tracking shot also to show the wider picture
of where they are driving to. However it may also seem strange as
to how empty this freeway is with this being the only car driving
which may represent the time or the type of area that they are
driving in.
Finally in this final shot we are seeing a close up on the front
of the car where you can see the words to serve and protect which
may be ironic as to the brothers as they break the rules frequently
as shown throughout this opening. In the back of the shot you are
also to see the sign about an orphanage which may be relevant to
the brothers and leads nicely onto the rest of the film and fits in
context with it.
