SARAH BOWMAN has concentrated on the theme of still life with a window view for over ten years. In that time the paintings have quietly evolved, stylistically and thematically. This modus operandi offers endless possibilities: there is always another inspiring landscape or a new object waiting to be found.
Gradually characters have strolled into the paintings – gardeners, sailors, housewives, walkers all pottering about their daily lives. Their presence and activity suggest a narrative. Similarly, certain paintings feature more of a room’s interior, offering glimpses into an imagined, timeless world.
She has lived happily with her family on the edge of Dartmoor for seven years and increasingly the rolling hills, hedgerows and seasonal changes are there in the pictures. Of course, the beautiful southwest coastline is never far away, both literally and artistically.
Recently, Sarah has explored a little further, leading to a departure, in the form of simpler more minimal compositions. The subtlety in colour and painterly texture continues to come from the Italian frescoes that so inspired her in her teens. The new paintings amplify this with scumbled surfaces and careful selection of objects and motifs to direct the eye around the painting. Just the handle of a cup or the vertical scratched line of a jug can tip the balance.
The whole process is meditative, rather like doing a puzzle. It has also reinvigorated the creative process behind the window view paintings. Both styles have a common thread and complement one another well in this solo exhibition.
