Featured Presentation:

The Forum: Realigning The WheelRecording of BBC World Service Radio program

Tuesday, June 2 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

What is the future of car-making? And for that matter, the future of industrial-scale manufacturing? Is it Industry 4.0 where every component has an IP address? Is it 3-D printing writ large? Biomass-derived bodywork materials? Or are the incremental improvements, such as opposed pistons or waste heat capture, which often pass under the media radar, the keys to our mobile futures? Host, Jack Stewart, will ask some of the brightest intellects in the manufacturing industry and beyond for their views.

Estimating the Cost Impact of Lightweighting Automotive ClosuresPresented by Center for Automotive Research (CAR)

Tuesday, June 2 11:00 AM – 12:00 PMThe approaching corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) regulations will again increase with new model years (MY). The U.S. Government finalized a regulation requiring cars and light trucks average 54.5 mpg fuel economy for MY2025. Vehicle manufacturers recognize removing weight is a key feature to meeting their targets for fuel economy and emission reductions. This presentation will encompass the utilization of lightweight materials, as well as current and evolving manufacturing processes.

Fundamentals, Applications and Future of Additive ManufacturingPresented by SME

Tuesday, June 2 2:00 PM – 3:00 PMHear how a variety of additive manufacturing technologies are currently being used. What are the applications and how successfully AM is being used? What are the stumbling blocks in more widespread usage? What does the future look like in AM and what should we be looking at down the road?

Dissimilar Materials Joining as an Enabling Technology for Automotive Structural Lightweighting Presented by Edison Welding Institute (EWI)

Wednesday, June 3 11:00 AM - 12:00 PMMaterials optimization for structural lightweighting carries the implicit assumption that the individual elements can be assembled into a final product. This presentation discusses some of the root causes for deleterious metallurgical interactions between different metal classes, and process innovations that progressively make welding more attractive for next-generation automotive construction.

The State of the Industry: Additive Manufacturing in the Automotive IndustryWednesday, June 3 2:00 PM – 3:00 PMStratasys, a global leader in additive manufacturing, will do an automotive industry summary of how and where the industry is using additive manufacturing. What is keeping AM from being used more fully in the automotive industry? Which applications will see AM be used more fully in the automotive arena in the next five years?

Networking ReceptionTuesday, June 2 4:00 PM – 5:00 PMMake connections that count. Join peers, exhibitors, industry leaders and speakers for a casual network-ing reception. See the completed M | Build car – built in less than a day on the M | Exhibits show floor.

M | BUILD WORKSHOPeXtreme Manufacturing

Tuesday, June 2 8:35 AM – 5:00 PM (Separate registration required)

Manufacturing for the future requires agility. Your teams encounter complex problems and need to know how to effectively work together to identify solutions and achieve the desired results.

The M | Build Workshop is designed for teams and individuals alike to develop cross-functional agile manufacturing skills through a series of activities to build a car in one day.

M | Build KeynoteJoe Justice of Scrum Inc. and Craig Sutton of John Deere will provide tools and take-aways for engineers and executives in manufacturing software looking to improve their processes. New professionals and students can see examples of the value found in pairing prioritized backlog-driven development and extreme programming, as they see the methodology jump from software teams to research, manufacturing and product engineering. A deep dive into Agile, Kanban and Lean is included – all of which are applied to conquer a highly regulated industry with large, distributed, collaborative teams.

M | Build SprintsFollowing the keynote, four 60- to 90- minute sprints will take place on the exhibit floor to actually build the car. Teams of five or individual participants may register for one, two, three or four sprints. Space is limited for each sprint.

Chassis Time – Create a workspace and execute tests to prepare the suspension model and crush structures Wheels Up – Focus on contract-first design and integration testing to add all wheels to the chassis Full Steer Ahead – Attach the pedal plate module and windshield Hot Rod – Add show-car stage makeup, add the aeroshell, and prepare the seats for show time!

M | Build Networking ReceptionJoin event attendees and M | Build participants for a casual networking reception and see the completed M | Build car!

M | TALENT WORKSHOPAccelerating Workforce Performance through Human Capital Initiatives

Thursday, June 4 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM (Participation included in M | Conference registration)

John Hindman, learning services manager at Tooling U-SME, will explore how the skills gap is making an immediate impact on a manufacturer’s competitiveness and how an investment into Human Capital initiatives can positively impact an organization’s key performance indicators and increase competitiveness through a higher skilled workforce. Mr. Hindman will introduce best practices in designing and implementing learning and development programs which yield desirable results in metrics such as speed to competency, productivity, employee engagement and retention. During the session, practical workforce development methods will be discussed and case studies will be introduced to give merit to methodologies. The session will contain a question and answer session to allow participants an opportunity to bring their stories and challenges to the discussion.
