As we begin 2015, I am excited to
share some of Bethesda’s key mile-
stones with our community. First, our
state-of-the-art endovascular services
are expanding to Bethesda Hospital
West with the opening of a new
$4 million specialized surgical suite.
You can read about these new services
and the generous donation by The Elo-
ise Kimmelman Foundation on page 6.
Also, this month marks the two-year
anniversary of opening Bethesda
Hospital West. Our outstanding team of
physicians and nurses has cared for
nearly 18,000 adults and children in our
Emergency Department this past year.
Among them was a young boy who was
successfully treated in our Children’s ER
for a rare, poisonous snakebite; and a
new mother who arrived in the ER, just
in time to deliver a beautiful baby girl.
Bethesda is here and ready for you.

and CEO Roger L. Kirk, FACHE,
was honored as one of the South Florida Business Journal 2014
Palm Beach Ultimate CEOs. The
award highlights the County’s
top 10 chief executives for their
expertise, leadership and community involvement.
After beginning his career in hospital administration in Texas,
Kirk moved to Boynton Beach and joined Bethesda in 1988 as
Vice President of Operations, was promoted to Executive Vice
President and Chief Operating Officer in 1994 and was
named CEO in 2012. His views on leadership are centered
around three key qualities: availability, affability and ability.
HEARTFELT PERFORMANCE
Bethesda Heart Hospital has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG (Get With The Guidelines) Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2014. Bethesda is one of only 139 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. The National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR) is a cardiovascular data repository developed by the American College of Cardiology.
The award recognizes Bethesda’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that Bethesda has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to the highest standards of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.
To receive the ACTION Registry–GWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award, Bethesda Heart Hospital consistently fol-lowed the treatment guidelines in the ACTION Registry–GWTG for four consecutive quarters and met a performance stan-dard of 90 percent for specific performance measures.
Welcoming a new baby is an
exciting milestone! That’s why the
Bethesda Center for Women and
Children is committed to providing
the highest level of care for our
patients. Now, Bethesda offers a Board
Certified obstetrician/gynecologist in the
hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
This means that a qualified physician is
immediately available to care for you or your
loved one should an urgent situation arise, such
as a speedy delivery or a medical emergency.
This new service, provided through the Unified
Medical Group, is led by maternal-fetal medicine
specialist Aaron B. Deustch, M.D., and
includes obstetrician/gynecologists John W.
Carevello, M.D.; Thomas G. Lang, M.D.;

Bethesda Health is proud to announce the expansion of our services at Bethesda Hospital West with the opening of a specialized endo-vascular surgical suite this spring. The new $3.6 million suite will be used to perform minimally invasive treatments for patients
with vascular disease, as well as diagnostic cardiac catheterizations.“The innovative technology available today allows us to better serve the
needs of our western communities,” said Bethesda President and CEO Roger L. Kirk, FACHE.
The suite at Bethesda Hospital West, named The Eloise Kimmelman Foundation Center for Interventional Radiology Treatment and Research, is a unique hybrid operating room capable of diagnostic cardiac catheter-izations, endovascular procedures and interventional radiology procedures. It is an expansion of the endovascular services at Bethesda Hospital East in The Walter S. and Lucienne Driskill Endovascular Center.
George L. Mueller, M.D., a highly regarded general and vascular sur-geon and member of Bethesda Health ’s Medical Staff since 1982, was the driving force behind the Driskill Endovascular Center.
“Our goal is to offer minimally invasive treatment options for patients with vascular conditions,” said Dr. Mueller. “With the expansion of the use of stents and stent grafts to treat blockages and aneurysms, we

transitioned away from big incisions to more minimally invasive treatments.”
While the number of patients with vascular disease continues to grow, advancements in endovascular med-icine create more options for minimally invasive treatments. Procedures such as balloon angioplasty, stenting, aneurysm repair and atherectomy of the lower leg are benefiting patients with a higher quality of care.
“Traditional vascular surgery requires large inci-sions, and longer hospital stays and recovery times. Endovascular procedures use minimally invasive techniques, offering patients a superior level of care, with less discomfort and shorter recovery times,” added Jesus G. Jimenez, M.D., a general and vascular surgeon who works with Dr. Mueller.
Endovascular procedures use a catheter that can be inserted into large blood vessels to treat blockages and aneurysms. Advanced imaging equipment in the operating room allows Bethesda’s team of experienced vascular sur-geons, interventional radiologists and interventional cardiologists the ability to perform both routine and complex procedures and endovascular
surgeries. Even difficult blockages and complicated aneu-rysms can now be treated with balloon stents and grafts.
Dr. Mueller adds, “The angiogram equipment generates spectacular images that can determine the precise location of the blockage and its characteristics—either in the vascular system or the heart.”
Dr. Jimenez continued, “With more minimally inva-sive options and advanced technology, patients no longer have to endure the painful effects of vascular disease.”
The specialized suite at Bethesda Hospital West is unique in that it is also equipped for diagnostic cardiac catheterizations. This minimally invasive pro-cedure is an essential step in determining the presence or severity of heart disease. Interventional cardiologists can gather detailed and accurate information about their patients’ cardiovascular condition to plan appro-priate treatments.
“Now, with state-of-the-art endovascular facilities at Bethesda Hospital East and Bethesda Hospital West, our patients have access to a higher level of care—right in their own community,” continued Dr. Mueller. “They can heal faster and get back to the activities they enjoy—whether it’s a walk on the beach, a round of golf or finally doing the traveling they planned for their retirement.”

The Bethesda Hospital Foundation is
delighted to recognize the generous
donation of $1.8 million from the Eloise
Kimmelman Foundation for the creation
of the hybrid endovascular and cardiac
catheterization suite at Bethesda Hospi-
tal West. Named the Eloise Kimmelman
Foundation Center for Interventional
Radiology Treatment and Research in
honor of their gift, it will bring a variety
of advanced, minimally invasive health-
care services to the western hospital.
Eloise and David Kimmelman were
supporters of healthcare in our commu-
nity for many years. They were married
for 48 years before Mrs. Kimmelman
passed away in 1997. When Mr. Kim-
melman passed away in 2005, their
estate was used to create the Eloise
Kimmelman Foundation, a charitable
organization devoted to funding educa-
tion and medical treatment for
cardiovascular and vascular disease.
Mr. Kimmelman, who himself had
suffered from peripheral arterial dis-
ease, had benefited directly from the
care he received at Bethesda Hospital
East. As a way to give back, the Foun-
dation made this generous gift to help
others in the community.
The Bethesda Hospital Foundation
Chair Mary Blum says, “David was a man
of extraordinary kindness, and now many
others who suffer from cardiovascular and
peripheral artery disease will benefit from
his gift. We thank him and his Trustees
for their confidence in our efforts to
provide this much-needed Center.”
The Bethesda Hospital Foundation
also recognizes and thanks other donors
who have stepped forward to support
life-saving endovascular care at
Bethesda: Mrs. Mary Ella Alfring, Mr.
Craig E. Lundberg, Mr. and Mrs. Buzz
Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Howard
and the Thomas F. Staley Foundation.

Bethesda Hospital East is proud to introduce some exciting new changes for our patients! First, we have opened our newly renovated private rooms, creating a more comfortable
and peaceful space for our patients during their stay. We have also launched our new room service-style meals to cater to our patients’ individual tastes.
The new rooms mean that Bethesda Hospital East’s general medical and surgical adult patient rooms are now all private to complement the all-private rooms of the Bethesda Orthopaedic Institute, Bethesda Heart Hospital and Bethesda Hospital West. Each room has amenities such as a private bathroom and shower, flat screen TV and plenty of space for visitors. Private rooms also help promote lower infection rates and a more restful, easier recovery for most patients.
Bethesda Health President and CEO Roger L. Kirk, FACHE, explained, “Private rooms promote a more tranquil healing environment, allowing patients to feel better faster. We are very pleased to offer this superior level of service to even more of our patients.”
Made-to-order, healthy meal selections are another way that Bethesda Health has raised the bar in patient care. Now, patients at Bethesda Hospital East can enjoy the same personalized food service that is
available at Bethesda Hospital West. Similar to room service at a five-star hotel, patients can order their meal when they are ready to eat, and a host or hostess will deliver the meal directly to the room.
“We understand that appetites and palates vary with illness, medications and other variables that can influence our patients,” Kirk added. “Our new and improved menus offer a wide range of choices to fit a variety of needs.”
Our registered dietitians and physicians have worked together closely to create special menus to offer a variety of choices for patients who have special dietary needs. Designed to be appealing as well as meet nutritional needs, the selections are also intended to help educate patients on the many options available to them.
The new room service-style meals program also makes it easier for visitors to order guest trays when they wish to dine with their loved ones. In addition, visitors and guests can enjoy Bethesda Hospital East’s newly remodeled dining room on the hospital’s lower level. With a selection of hot items, a fresh salad bar, made-to-order grill items and sandwiches, as well as pre-made grab-n-go choices, there is something for everyone. Bon appétit!
Bethesda Hospital East is located at 2815 S. Seacrest Blvd., Boynton Beach. For a FREE Physician Referral, please call 561-737-7733, ext. 84499.

FROM THE CHAIRMANThe Caring for our Community Cam-

most important strategic goals are to
fund new technology and improve
patient care. This campaign has helped
us initiate fundraising for the new
Eloise Kimmelman Foundation Center
for Interventional Radiology Treatment
and Research at Bethesda Hospital
West. With approximately 1 in 20 peo-
ple over the age of 50 suffering from
peripheral arterial disease (PAD), the
large population of seniors in our com-
munity means there is a great need for
a specialized treatment center.
The dream to build the center began
with the vision of renowned South
Florida general and vascular surgeon

leadership, the Eloise Kimmelman

There are many ways to give back to your local commu-nity—and supporting your local community hospital is
one way that can make an impact! The Bethesda Hospital Foundation has been raising funds to support quality, local healthcare services since it formed in 1947 to build south Palm
Beach County’s first hospital, Bethesda Hospital East.
Led by dedicated, philanthropic citizens, the fundraising initiatives of the Bethesda Hospital Foundation over the past 68 years have made possi-ble Bethesda Hospital East, Bethesda Hospital West and a full complement of healthcare services through
Bethesda’s Centers of Excellence. Supporting not-for-profit healthcare in your local community makes state-of-the-art facilities and technology—as well as highly trained and caring doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals—available to you, and
to your friends and neighbors.

for the most complex cases.
We are proud that the Eloise
Kimmelman Foundation has stepped
forward as the lead donor for this vital
center for our western community.
Others who have stepped forward are
Mrs. Mary Ella Alfring, Mr. Craig E.
Lundberg, Mr. and Mrs. Buzz Newton,
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Howard and the
Thomas F. Staley Foundation.
This is one example of how your con-
tributions matter. Won’t you consider
making a contribution to Bethesda for
the Caring for our Community Campaign?
Please consider giving to the Bethesda Hospital Foundation today, and support your local not-for-profit community hospitals. There are many ways you can give:
` By check: Make out a check to the Bethesda Hospital Foundation.
` By Credit Card: Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover are accepted.
` Donate Online: www.BethesdaHospitalFoundation.org ` By Wire Transfer: Please call 561-737-7733, ext. 84445, for the appropriate routing numbers.
` By Stocks: Transfer stocks or other securities as a gift to the Bethesda Foundation by directing your broker to call 561-276-1680; use DTC code 5198 for deposit into account # 731-04001. If the stocks have appreci-ated in value, there are two advantages to this: avoiding paying capital gains taxes and receiving credit for a charitable tax deduction on full market value. (If the gift is a pledge payment, the account number is slightly different: it is # 731-04005.)
` By Trust: Put your assets in ownership of a Trust, including your residences, real estate, stocks, etc. The Trust’s assets may grow and provide income for you now and benefit heirs and charity later.
` Charitable Remainder Trust: Name Bethesda Hospital Foundation a beneficiary for a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the Trust’s remainder value (e.g., 50%, 25% or 10%). Make the Trust “irrevoca-ble” and your gift qualifies for a tax deduction and recognition at one of our VIP Donor Clubs.
` Lead Trust: If you prefer to help Bethesda now rather than when you pass away, a Lead Trust provides the Trust’s “lead” or “first” income to Bethesda now or
for a period of years, leaving your heirs to inherit the remainder.
` By Life Insurance: Donate a policy with coverage you or your family does not really need anymore by changing the policy’s beneficiary to Bethesda Hospi-tal Foundation, and when you pass, you’ll make a donation to the hospital. Make Bethesda both benefi-ciary and policy owner and you can take a charitable tax-deduction now on the policy’s market value or cost basis, and your premium payments will be tax deductible, too.
` By IRA (Individual Retirement Account): There are two ways to give through your IRA—now or later. Did you know if you leave your IRA to an individual, both estate taxes and income taxes will apply? If you name a charity like Bethesda Hospital Foundation as a partial beneficiary, that lowers the amount of estate and income taxes. If you name Bethesda as full beneficiary, that lowers the amount of estate and income taxes. Name Bethesda as a full beneficiary and your estate’s taxable value is lowered, too. To give “Now”: Pending renewal by Congress, you will have the option to instruct your IRA company to send funds directly to a qualified charity like Bethesda Hospital Foundation as a donation. This is called a QCD, a “qualified charitable distribution” or an “IRA charitable rollover.” You don’t have to declare that donated IRA QCD as part of your tax-able income, but it still “counts” toward the IRA distributions you’re required to take at age 70 ½ or older. You can donate up to $100,000. While you don’t have to pay income taxes on the QCD, it does not qualify for a charitable tax deduction, either. CONTINUED `
Your gift can be used to support our
four strategic goals—our Centers of
Excellence, new technology, improving
patient care and medical education.

` By Matching Gifts: Did you know your donation could be doubled or possibly even tripled thanks to many employers’ matching gift programs? Approximately half of all Fortune 500 com-panies have matching gift programs, and many compa-

Dan Burns has dedi-cated his life to giving to others. As the former chair-
man of the Bethesda Hospital Foundation, Burns helped raise $100 million, of which the final $30 million was used to build the Bethesda Heart Hospital. Eight years later, he had the opportunity to appreciate the Bethesda Heart Hospital from a new perspective.
“It was December 30. I woke up at 6:30 a.m. and my arms were hurting,” says Burns. He explains that he got up to take a shower, but his arms hurt so badly that he decided to skip the shower and drive himself to Bethesda Hospital East, where he pulled up in front of the Emergency Department.
“The security guard took my car and the nurses rushed me inside and put me on a stretcher,” he recalls.
Burns describes how swiftly everyone moved to take care of him. “Everyone from the emer-gency physicians and nursing staff, to the nurses in the cardiac catheterization lab made me feel that they were doing everything they could for me. The interven-tional cardiologist, Anil G. Verma, M.D., was excellent.”
A series of tests, including an EKG, revealed that Burns had a blocked artery that required a stent immediately.
Burns remembers waking up in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Bethesda Heart Hospital and feeling great. “And it’s been that way ever since,” he adds.
Immediately after leaving the hospital, Burns was able to start a monitored exer-cise program through Bethes-da’s Outpatient Rehabilitation cardiac rehab program. Within months he was on a daily walk-ing regimen and now feels he’s in the best shape of his life.
“When you believe in a cause to help your community, you never think that it might be you who’s on the receiving end. I have been given a new lease on life, and it would never have been possible if Bethesda wasn’t here to take care of me,” says Burns. “This experience has taught me that not only is it worthwhile to give to something you believe in, but it’s life-changing when you do.”
