Welcome We are glad that you have taken the first step in exploring the possibility of being our next Team Rector. The following document has been put together to help you in your discernment process. It will give you some idea of who we are, our challenges and opportunities, and what we could offer if you come to join us. Read on!

What is our vacancy? We are looking for a Team Rector to lead the Benefice of Langelei and to have principal ministerial responsibility for All Saints, Kings Langley. The Benefice comprises four parishes, each with one church, in the Deanery of Hemel Hempstead within the Diocese of St. Albans:

All Saints, Kings Langley St. Mary's, Apsley End St. Benedict's, Bennetts End Holy Trinity, Leverstock Green

Where is the Benefice? You may be wondering where Langelei is! The Benefice sits in a triangle between Hemel Hempstead, Watford and St Albans approximately 20 miles northwest of London on the southern edge of the Chiltern Hills, with beautiful ancient woodlands and countryside on the doorstep. When the Benefice was created in 2009 the medieval word Langelei (long meadow) was chosen to describe the valley flowing southwest from Hemel to include Kings Langley which had at that point recently joined the team. The area has excellent transport links to both the M25 and M1 and is part of the London commuter belt. There is a wide choice of good schools and colleges in the local area and the modern, 4-bedroom Rectory is in the heart of Kings Langley village, within easy walking distance of the church and local shops.

Who are we? We are a Benefice of four parishes each led by a PCC, with an overarching Team Council which has responsibilities for communications and office administration. The Team Council meets at least twice a year and comprises the three stipendiary clergy and two lay representatives from each parish. Each parish has responsibility for its own mission, ministry and finances, and we value the freedom to respond to our own local contexts, and celebrate the diversity of each church's own traditions and vision. However, we are also committed to one another, enjoying affectionate relationships between the 4 congregations. We do some things best together, and some best separately, and try to maintain a light touch on that. Currently we worship together on Ash Wednesday and on the anniversary of our formation as a team in October; we have an annual joint Quiet Day; walk the Easter Monday pilgrimage to St Albans together; jointly prepare children for Communion before Confirmation; and organise occasional team socials. The staffing level of the Benefice is 3 full time stipendiary clergy (each parish warrants 75% of a priest's time), with additional support from one licensed Lay Reader, three retired Readers as well as two clergy with Permission to Officiate. Since January 2017 St Mary's and St Benedict's have formed a new pairing, sharing the Revd Richard Howlett's time on a 50/50 basis. The Revd Lizzie Hood is based at Holy Trinity but offers 25% of her parish time in support of St Benedict's. The new Team Rector would be based at All Saints and would similarly offer 25% of their parish time in support of St Mary's. The two Team Vicars are experienced priests and Lizzie is also the Rural Dean of Hemel Hempstead. They meet weekly for prayer, mutual support and team business. The ministry team very much values truly collegial relationships, listening to and encouraging one another and pooling their different skills and talents for the benefit of the whole team. The Benefice has been a training ground for curates and we hope this will continue in the future. The Team Rector additionally convenes the Team Council, chairs the Leverstock Green Religious Education Fund trustees' meetings, and acts in a representative capacity on behalf of the Benefice. The Benefice is supported by an experienced part-time Administrator, working 22.5 hours per week, who is based at All Saints.

All Saints’ Church, Kings Langley All Saints’ Church is the parish church of Kings Langley and has a significant presence in a strong, active and supportive community in the village. There are currently 116 on our electoral roll, with usual Sunday attendance of around 51 adults on Sundays. There are very few children and young people – an average of 5 children and 1 teenager in the regular Sunday service. All these numbers have declined in recent years, and reaching out to children and young families is something we know we must do to balance an otherwise ageing congregation. As a traditional village church, we do have the opportunity to connect with local families - many of whom request baptisms, weddings and funerals. Christmas, Easter and Remembrance services all have good attendance including many non-regular churchgoers. We recently celebrated our 800th anniversary with a host of events. The church building is one of Hertfordshire’s most beautiful ancient churches and is a Grade II* listed building, founded in 1215. During the last year we have opened the church on a daily basis and have had a significant number of visitors, both from the local community and much further afield, many attracted to view the royal tomb of Edmund of Langley, the first Duke of York. We are fortunate to be supported by an active Friends of All Saints group who raise funds to maintain the fabric of the building. It’s not just the building that is open! We feel we have made significant progress in opening ourselves to welcome the community with varied concerts and events, and there is a new spirit of energy and enthusiasm in the PCC who are open to the change that we need to embrace. The PCC consists of 2 churchwardens, 7 elected members, 3 Deanery representatives and 3 co-opted members. There are several sub-groups managing fabric, finance, and fund-raising and we have a professional accountant as our Honorary Treasurer. We have a Local Ministry Development Team, providing a highly valued pastoral service to many parishioners, looking forward to working with a new incumbent to further our ministry in Christ.

I came for Edmund’s tomb. Stunning!

Community and Mission

A number of outreach, fundraising and other activities make contact with people from across the local village community, however an important challenge which has not yet been met is building contacts with our village primary and secondary schools. We are a Fairtrade church.

Fundraising and social activities have been completely rethought and have flourished in recent years – this has included concerts, quiz evenings, carnivals, race nights, line dancing, wine tasting, jazz

nights, tours and historical lectures, and a Christmas Tree festival

Where are we going?

We know that God has for us a Team Rector who has a gift for welcome, openness and inclusiveness, as these are core values embedded in our Mission Action Plan, updated last in June 2017:

We pray that God is preparing the right person to lead us in re-energising and re-motivating the church to be a place where people of all ages are able to find Christ and for all to grow in faith. There are talented people in the congregation and we have a strong desire to work with a new Team Rector to grow our church family. We have confidence that All Saints will flourish again under God’s direction as a vibrant family church, well linked into the

community and wider Benefice. We are in the early planning stages of an exciting project to re-order the internal layout of

the church, opening up the spacious interior and making it welcoming and accessible to all, bringing a feeling of inclusivity

and providing a flexible layout for different forms of worship and community events. It is not wholly supported, but we

believe God will guide us all towards making the right choices and we hope and expect that the new Team Rector will lead

and support us.

Progress on Goals from the previous MAP:

Film and discussion evenings have been successful to date

Fund-raising community events – continued success at involving non-church people

Many people had been involved in the 800th anniversary events – success at involving the wider community

We made less progress than we would have liked on:

Review of worship and liturgy

Building contacts with our village schools

We have made progress with communications but not yet set up a Communications Group.

Our Vision is to be a welcoming and open church which is energized by faith, open to change especially in worship and liturgy, attended by people of all ages who are actively involved in all aspects of a successful and joyful church. Priorities for the next 5 years:

Attracting new worshippers of all ages

Building relationships with the local community

Make the church building inspirational for 21st century mission and ministry

In the light of these, our 3 key goals for the next year or more were set as:

Work on re-ordering the internal layout of the church

Set up a communications group, access and use social media more to raise our profile within the community

Open the church up during the day

St Mary’s Church, Apsley St Mary’s is an active church, seeking to serve the community via links with schools and support for voluntary organisations such as DENS and Druglink (Nascent House rehabilitation project is next to the church), and we have made significant progress. There are currently 93 on the electoral roll, and the usual Sunday attendance is 51 adults and 10 children. In the last year we have had 18 baptisms and thanksgiving services, 6 weddings and 9 funerals. St Mary’s is an attractive Victorian-built church, overlooking the Apsley Mills retail park. Its building and grounds are well maintained, thanks to a renowned volunteer workforce. It is Grade II listed and is diligently cared for by its Fabric Committee. Heating and lighting have been upgraded and there is an ongoing programme of stonework maintenance. It has an active well led bell ringing team who ring every Sunday and at other special services throughout the year. The west end of the church contains the kitchen, toilets, and the refectory which is used for a variety of activities including Sunday School, Saturday café, Buzzy Bees, meetings and study groups.

What we do

Worship:

Friendly 10am Common Worship parish communion with well-attended Sunday School

Weekly (Thursday) 9.30am Said Communion with Bible study group to follow

Monthly 8am (BCP) Communion, 6.30pm Evening Prayer and 3pm Messy Church

Mission: Recently revised MAP goals

Pursue ways of leading congregation ‘Deeper into God’, for example through ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ initiative which last year included a night of prayer and breakfast

Increase outreach to local businesses and community - most recent example the ‘Angel Festival’ in December

Look for opportunities to open the church in addition to existing weekday and weekend activities, which include Messy Church, Saturday café, Buzzy Bees Toddler Group, Solo Lunch, Working Party

Increase communication to church members, baptism families, and local schools including our Church of England VA Primary

Continue ‘Succession Planning’ for the church’s life and work through our audit of church skills

Community The church members have for several years taken part in carol singing in local pubs, nursing homes and outside Sainsbury’s, raising money for local charities. The Christmas Bazaar and Angel Festival have also put the church in contact with hundreds of local people - both long-term residents and those who have arrived more recently. Our three local primary schools enjoy coming to the church for special services and National Curriculum study visits, and we are building on existing contacts with them. The Vicar is an ex-officio governor at Nash Mills VA School and works closely with the Head and school community in developing the Christian ethos of the school. Several lay members of St Mary’s are staff at the school. The local uniformed organisations come to special evening visits at the church, as well as attending services such as Mothering Sunday and Harvest.

St. Benedict's Church, Bennetts End The church stands at a busy junction, opposite the main Bennetts Gate shops. St Benedict’s prides itself on giving a warm welcome to all, and we wish to welcome in more of the community. That is why opening our church is one of the goals, and we will want to develop the interior to provide resources and welcome to people to just ‘drop in’. In February 2018, the church celebrated 60 years since its consecration.

St Benedict’s is in an area of greater socio-economic deprivation, and sadly we do not currently have the benefit of legacy resources. The budget for the end of this year projects a deficit of over £8500. St Benedict’s has been approved for continued support as a mission-aided parish. Though we continue to struggle financially, we are capable of achieving great things together, such as raising £25,000 in 2014 to install a disabled toilet and improve facilities for our less mobile church members and visitors. We have hosted a number of joyful and celebratory Christmas Tree Festival events, supported by community groups and local businesses, and recently had a very successful Autumn Fair, raising just under £1300 and attracting a large number of non-church members to the event. A successful ‘Easter Trail’ was attended by year 1 and 2 children from local schools, and another is planned this year. St Benedict’s is certainly at a ‘low ebb’ in terms of numbers of regular worshippers, and the ministry team of Vicar, Rural Dean and PTO Clergy and PTO Reader have sought to give a lot of love and build a good family atmosphere. The church’s sense of identity and common purpose has been enhanced by the review of their MAP. The updated MAP goals are below. There are currently 39 on the electoral roll, and the average Sunday attendance is 22 adults and 4 children. In the last year we have had 3 baptisms and thanksgiving services, 8 funerals and no weddings.

St Benedict’s is a modern building of the late 1950s, based on the model of Coventry cathedral. It is in good general repair, though the hall kitchen needs refurbishment. Our new disabled-access WC, installed after successful fundraising by the congregation to enable church-level access has thankfully put an end to the ‘walk of shame’!

What we do

Worship: Friendly 10am Common Worship parish communion

Weekly (Monday 4pm) Evening Prayer for St Benedict’s ‘Staff Team’ and others

Mission: Recently revised MAP goals for this year

Replace the dilapidated outside noticeboard to improve outreach and visibility

Get the church open during the school day, and have prayer and other resources inside for visitors

Have a visible sign outside to show ‘Open church’

Ring the church bell to announce services

Set up prayer diary to pray for local schools and businesses, building on successful response to ‘Thy Kingdom Come’

Community There is certainly scope for St Benedict’s to be ‘seen’ much more as a special and sacred place in this community. This includes successful work with schools with whom we continue to have good links. There is also a mandate to pursue sharing and co-operation between St Benedict’s and St Mary’s, who share the team vicar Revd Richard Howlett. Nash Mills C of E VA School lies on the border of both parishes and is a shared mission opportunity.

Holy Trinity Church, Leverstock Green Holy Trinity is an active church at the heart of the community, both physically (being located adjacent to the village green and close to a parade of shops, pubs and a library) and through its activities acting as a focus for village life. The well-maintained Grade II listed building from 1849 is set in a peaceful churchyard which, though closed to burials, has a Garden of Remembrance for the interment of ashes. The 'Trinity Room' extension at the rear of the church has meeting and other rooms, but is inadequate for today’s needs. There are currently 165 on the electoral roll, and the usual Sunday attendance is 90 adults and 8 children. In the last year we have had 23 baptisms and thanksgiving services, 7 weddings, 27 funerals and 17 interments of ashes. Our 'worshipping community' rose last year from 183 to 226, and we feel this is due to a range of approaches - a culture of repeat invitation; warmth of welcome; imaginative and fun community events; better focussed publicity which makes good use of social media; improving the quality of our worship; and the variety of nurture opportunities for all ages, including quiet days, retreats and pilgrimage. Ventures such as Nativity Crib Festivals, pet services, and concerts have drawn in many residents who are not regular worshippers, but who are beginning to filter in, and we are seeking to build on this. We have also strengthened links with local organisations, establishing Friendship Teas jointly with the WI, organising joint events with the Cricket Club, and hosting a COGS memory club for Age UK Dacorum. While we have evidence that we are achieving some of our goals, there is still work to be done in strengthening the 'pathway' for baptism families to progress into mature discipleship. The PCC has identified that we are 'pot bound' by inadequate hall/meeting room space, and we are committed to investigating a rebuild of the Trinity Room. There are many active groups in the parish including 'Coming to Stillness' (a contemplative prayer group), Music and Meditation, home study groups, a carers' support group and a pastoral support group. There are also various social groups - Trinity Women, Trinity Men, and groups for those keen on craft and reading, as well as a Saturday Coffee Shop and Traidcraft Stall.

Community Leverstock Green is an historic and pretty village on the eastern edge of Hemel Hempstead, on the road to St Albans, now connected to the 'New Town'. The close-knit community has a strong village identity with a community centre, a variety of sports clubs and other amenities. The village is a popular place to live with excellent transport links and is served by secondary schools in Hemel Hempstead, Watford and St Albans. There is one Abbeyfield home in the village. There is a Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, with which the church has a close relationship - leading weekly worship, providing Foundation Governors and hosting class visits. There is also a Special Needs school within the village which comes to church for seasonal worship.

The Deanery of Hemel Hempstead Hemel Hempstead is a small, cohesive Deanery focussed on the town itself and the neighbouring village of Kings Langley, with a mix of traditional and estate churches. It is made up of:

The Benefice of Langelei comprising four churches over four parishes.

The Parish of Boxmoor, comprising three churches in one parish.

The Benefice of Hemel Hempstead comprising five churches over four parishes.

The Deanery Chapter is a lively group made up of Clergy and Lay Readers (active and retired) who meet on a monthly basis for business, support, learning and fun. We give our meetings a high priority which has led to a strong sense of belonging and trust; a place not of competition but where we can share our vulnerability and the joys and challenges of ministry, and so guard against isolation and stress. For several years we have held either a short annual residential or individual study days. There is the expectation of commitment to the Chapter and its ideals, and the life and work of the Deanery as a whole. The three Team Rectors also meet with the Rural Dean occasionally, and they represent their teams on Deanery Standing and Pastoral Committee. The Deanery Synod meets three times a year, and has recently set up an innovative project to develop a Lay Chapter to enable the lay members of Synod to build stronger relationships and be better equipped for their role. The lay representatives also liaise with the members of our churches to share good practice, to arrange joint training locally and to encourage fellowship between the churches. The Deanery as a whole has a growing sense of connectedness. We now worship together on Ascension Day and organise an annual social or outing. Our Deanery Mission Action Plan seeks to make the Deanery a catalyst for growing God’s church in this area, exploring how we can best share experience and enthusiasm to resource our people and work together. We aim to be authentically related and a means of support to parishes. We are also working together to keep a watchful eye on the proposed new housing developments and their implications for spiritual care.

Churches Together in Hemel Hempstead Churches Together in Hemel Hempstead was established in 1995 with the goal of providing a common voice when engaging with the wider community, to facilitate communication between member churches, and to encourage partnership working. CTHH organises a joint Walk of Witness in Hemel town centre on Good Friday. In recent years, churches have worked together on several exciting projects to serve local needs. These have included a night shelter (now DENS - the Dacorum Emergency Night Shelter), a Foodbank, a secondary schools' ministry project (Crossover), Pray Hemel (a monthly ecumenical prayer breakfast), and Across Hemel a town-wide mission. Most recently Liberty Tea Rooms has opened in a central position as a Community Hub, offering so much more than tea and cake (on a pay-as-you-can basis); it's now the base for Christians Against Poverty, the team of Street Pastors, and the Police chaplains. Ministers meet occasionally for lunch, and this has led to a greater sense of cohesion across the town churches. Members of Churches Together in Hemel Hempstead also participate in the Dacorum Interfaith Network which holds regular discussions and events. Kings Langley also has its own Churches Together network, and the ministers meet from time to time for lunch. There is a very active Christian Aid network in Kings Langley, raising much needed funds and awareness across the local area.

The Diocese of St Albans

The Diocese of St Albans covers Bedfordshire, Luton, Hertfordshire and Barnet. Our Benefice sits in the south west of the Diocese, conveniently close to the Cathedral and the Diocesan HQ in St Albans, and within the Archdeaconry of St Albans, with the Venerable Jonathan Smith as our Archdeacon. Our Diocesan Bishop, the Rt Revd Dr Alan Smith, is assisted by two Suffragans - the Rt Revd Dr Michael Beasley (Hertford) and the Rt Revd Richard Atkinson (Bedford). Our Bishops encourage us to 'Live God's Love' by 'Going deeper into God', 'Making new disciples', and 'Transforming communities' and this vision undergirds the mission of our parishes and chaplaincies. Diocesan Officers provide invaluable support in various areas of parish life, and there is an active Mission and Ministry Department. We are encouraged to make use of a good Support in Ministry (SiM) scheme, to take up the opportunity of Extended Study Leave, and to reflect regularly on practice by engaging in the process of Mission and Ministry Development Reviews which involve interviews with consultants and visits from the Bishop's Staff Team.

Local area

Kings Langley

Kings Langley village has a population of approximately 6,100 and is surrounded by green belt countryside. The village has excellent links to London and the rest of the UK with regular trains into Euston and a national motorway network with the M1 and junction 20 of the M25 within easy reach. The village boasts many historic buildings apart from the church - some of the shops and pubs in the village date back many centuries. King Henry III had a Royal Seat here and built a hunting Lodge in the Royal Forest, which stretched from outer London all around Langelei and up to Berkhamsted. King Edward I lived in the Royal Palace at the top of Langley Hill and celebrated All Saints’ Day in the Parish Church in 1299. The name Langelei became Langley Regis in the 1383 and then Kings Langley in the 1600s. Today, the village shops, restaurants and pubs attract people from the local area both during the day and in the evening. Kings Langley village has a popular primary school and within its grounds is the Three Villages Children Centre offering support to children under five and their families. A newly rebuilt comprehensive co-educational secondary school reopened in 2016. Both schools are oversubscribed and have recently received very good Ofsted reports. The village caters for nursery age children both privately at the Montessori school and the “Jack in the Box” nursery which accepts both fee paying and government funded places. Nearby is Abbots Hill independent girls’ school and a Rudolf Steiner school. The village has uniformed organisations for children of all ages – Rainbows through to Guides and Beavers to Scouts. There are links with these groups, but it would be good to strengthen them. There is a cricket club on the common, a football club (where Watford Ladies FC also train and play), a bowls club, tennis club, several active amateur dramatics groups and a variety of other clubs and societies. Watford to the southeast is a thriving town centre which is currently undergoing major redevelopment.

Hemel Hempstead

Hemel Hempstead is an ancient town with a long history stretching back to Domesday times. Henry VIII granted Hemel Hempstead a Royal Charter to allow a Thursday market in what is now the Old Town. The market is no longer held there, but the Old Town has remained a very attractive area, with antique shops, restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and a lovely park. There is also a small theatre that hosts music events and small touring companies.

Hemel Hempstead was expanded into a New Town in the 50s and 60s, and it now has a population of around 90,000. It was designed as a series of neighbourhoods, each with its own amenities and green spaces. The town centre has recently undergone a major refurbishment with a new library and civic offices for Dacorum Borough Council, updated street furniture in the shopping centre, and the original Jellicoe water gardens have been restored. The Maylands industrial area is also undergoing significant development.

Hemel Hempstead has a central Leisure Centre and swimming pool and at Jarman Park there is a multi-screen cinema, an ‘extreme’ sports centre, an athletics track and a number of popular restaurants, as well as an excellent Snow Centre nearby. The town is surrounded by parks, common land and countryside, including the Boxmoor Trust land and, about 5 miles away, the 4,000 acre Ashridge Estate, which is National Trust property and through which passes the Ridgeway and many other waymarked walks.

Hemel Hempstead has a frequent train service to London, taking about 30 minutes, and road connections with the M1 to the East and the M25 to the South. It is easy to access nearby towns, such as Watford, Tring, Aylesbury and St Albans which have theatres and community events. Hemel is well known for its Magic Roundabout, where traffic circulates in both directions!
