I am so appreciative for the efforts made by our staff at WHS for the continual support to families and students in learning, during this physical school closure. My heart aches in particular though, for our seniors, as they have had to forgo the most exciting and fun times of their educational journey...so far. We want to be with YOU to celebrate Prom, Spring Sports, your Drama & Musical performances, Senior BBQ, Senior Recognition Night, Senior MVP Breakfast, Baccalaureate and especially, Graduation. We know that the memories you will have of your senior spring events will not be the same as your peers from previous graduating classes. However, it will be memorable, for other reasons, and we are going to work hard to make it special. In the end, however, we just hope and pray that all of our students, not just our seniors, have learned how to advocate for themselves, discovered new ways to self manage expectations from teachers with their learning, and to prioritize what is really important. As a wise person once said: "it is not what happens (pandemic) which is important, it is HOW we react to it which matters most." Although many of our students, and especially our seniors, feel jilted by the affects of the pandemic, we hope in the end we will all grow and become better versions of ourselves as a result. ~ Mr. Shoup Important Update About Grades We have received direction from the State of Washington regarding students and their grades, which are outlined below: - Student grades can not and will not be affected negatively because of the closure. Students can only IMPROVE their grades as a result of the work and learning they are doing in their classes. - It is still expected that students will engage in the learning activities being provided by staff, but again, they can not be marked down if they do not participate. - Students will be given the option of earning an "incomplete" in a course if they are unable to improve their grade to a satisfactory passing mark. These incomplete grades will be rectified in the fall of next year with the support and guidance of our teachers. - Our District has the ability to "waive" credits for some of our seniors in classes which they were unable to complete the required work to improve their grade to a passing level. These waivers will be determined on an individual, case by case scenario. If you have questions about your students grades, please contact the individual teacher via email and they will gladly explain the current status of your students effort in their class.

COLLEGE PLANNING TIMELINES FOR MAY

Juniors: In May, college-bound juniors are advised to do the following:

1. Check Skyward and make sure you are taking the correct college-bound classes for next year. Email your counselor if you have any questions.

2. Work on your career/ college resume. Email Mrs. Sturdivan or your counselor with any questions.

3. Email your counselor and Mrs. Sturdivan about Scholarships, Cascadia Tech, and Running Start.

4. Check the CollegeBoard.org and ACT.org websites for updates regarding SAT and ACT testing dates.

5. Explore the US Gov site: https:/ / studentaid.ed.gov/ to f ind resources for federal aid, college planning and f inancial aid.

Seniors: Please read the information below from the Washington Student Achievement Council. Colleges Adjust Requirements and Deadlines in Response to COVID-19:

1. In the face of COVID-19, Washington?s colleges and universit ies are being f lexible about course requirements, test scores, deadlines, and more. Contact admissions off ices directly if you have special circumstances or questions about how to meet requirements and deadlines during COVID-19.

2. Some colleges are modifying admissions requirements:

a. Many colleges have extended the deadline to off icially decide where you plan to enroll. Many have also extended the deadline to make deposits.

3. Some campuses have gone test-optional, meaning you do not have to submit scores from standardized tests like SAT and ACT.

4. If someone in your family has lost a job or is working less, colleges may be able to provide more f inancial aid.

a. If you?ve already f iled a 2020-21 FAFSA or WASFA, talk to the f inancial aid off ice about your situation.

b. If you haven?t applied for f inancial aid, it?s not too late. Submit your application, then follow up with the college.

5. Many colleges are offering virtual campus tours you can do online from home.

6. Remember, it?s not too late to apply! Many of Washington?s four-year public and private, not-for-prof it colleges and universit ies, are stil l accepting applications for Fall 2020.

COLLEGE ENTRANCE TESTING

Note: All accredited universit ies/ colleges will accept both SAT and ACT tests for admission. Take the test you feel most comfortable with!

SAT: Students must register for the SAT online, using this website: sat.org/ register. Woodland High School is a test site; the College Board stil l handles all registration online. Be sure to include WHS code: 481600, so we will receive your scores to place on your transcript for college and scholarship applications.

COVID-19 Updates regarding SAT and ACT: Check the CollegeBoard.org and ACT.org websites for updates regarding SAT and ACT testing dates.

ALL GRADE-LEVEL PRESENTATIONS

The school board voted to waive all grade-level presentations for the 2019-2020 school year.

If you have any questions please email Mrs. Sturdivan at [email protected].

IMPORTANT: SENIOR SLIDE SHOW

Mr. VanCleef is collecting pictures for the Senior Slide Show and ONLY HAS ABOUT 25 SENIORS THAT HAVE TURNED IN THEIR PICTURES.

Please submit six (6) pictures total:

- Pictures need to be school appropriate. The pictures cannot show beer bottles, cigarettes, or any items that are il legal or inappropriate.

- One picture must be a senior picture, or a recent picture, so everyone viewing the slideshow will recognize the person in the pictures.

- Your classmates would like to see not only baby pictures, but also pictures of you growing up throughout the years.

If you do not have a senior picture yet, please send in all the other pictures. It is much easier to add one picture rather than all six.

You have several options to submit your pictures:

- Send them in an email to: [email protected] Put them on a CD and contact Mr. VanCleef for drop-off arrangements. Please place the students' name on the

CD so it can be returned. - If you have pictures, place them in an envelope with your name on the outside. Make arrangements with Mr.

VanCleef for drop-off . After they are scanned, he will return them as soon as possible.

Dear Woodland Community,

I am incredibly humbled by and feel immense pride for the ongoing support and dedication the Woodland community continues to show for its neighborhood schools.

Despite a time of global crises resulting from the COVID-19 novel coronavirus ? both health and economic ? Woodland has once again demonstrated that ensuring our children receive the best possible preparation for life after high school remains one of our community?s top priorities by voting to pass the school replacement levy.

While the funds provided by this levy remain instrumental in providing our community?s children with access to the high-quality education they need to achieve their dreams, let me assure you that your school board of directors and entire district staff are well aware of the sacrifices our community?s taxpayers continue to make in order to provide this opportunity.

Your sacrifice is not one we take lightly.

Your school district?s board of directors has promised that no matter what happens to the economy in the following three years, the actual levy rate for the replacement levy will not exceed the estimated rates. In fact, the board of directors officially passed resolution 20-03 on Monday, March 10 to officially guarantee the actual rate will not exceed the following estimates:

TY2021: $2.37 per $1,000 of assessed property valueTY2022: $2.36 per $1,000 of assessed property valueTY2023: $2.36 per $1,000 of assessed property value

As we all venture forward in the ongoing war against COVID-19, I want to assure you that your neighborhood schools and staff will continue to provide the services our community needs while innovating to ensure our children receive the education they deserve, whether that be in-person or via remote learning.

Once again, I thank you all for your support of your neighborhood schools. Woodland?s ongoing tradition of supporting strong schools remains strong in the face of the most historic and challenging of obstacles.

Sincerely,

Michael Z. GreenSuperintendent ? Woodland Public Schools
