We at TBJ would like to say a big heartfelt happy birthday to our beloved city of Jakarta as it celebrates its 484th anniversary. As always, to commemorate the occasion the Jakarta Fair returns to the Jakarta International Expo Building in Kemayoran to entertain the capital’s residents for a whole month - just in time for the summer holidays. Meanwhile, it seems that a whole lot of events have been crammed into the month of July to anticipate the approaching month of Ramadan, coming our way in August. Before the late night partying and good times grind to a halt for the holy time, let’s all enjoy July as best as we can. There’s plenty on and you have come to the right place to find out where it’s all happening. Until next time, keep on rocking Jakarta!

Sampai edisi berikutnya, keep on rocking Jakarta!

To celebrate its second anniversary, Portico has prepared a month long line up of entertainment dubbed ’30 Days of Summer’. The thirty day dining and music extravaganza will start on the 1st of July and will feature 70’s rock revival group Naif live on stage. Those who want to know the ins and outs of cocktail combining can train with legendary mixologist Timothy Adams in a special mixology training session. You can also enjoy freeflow cocktails every Friday and Monday from 5pm - 11pm for only Rp175k. On the 27th of July, Portico will present turntable maestro extraordinaire Keys N Krates from Toronto as one of the major highlights of this thirty day celebration of music, drinks and food.

30 Days Of Summer

If you happened to miss the highly anticipated Laskar Pelangi musical earlier this year, worry no more as the theatrical rendition of the popular movie will return to Teater Jakarta, Ismail Marzuki from the 1st – 11th of July. Due to very high public demand, producer Mira Lesmana was forced to bring the show back to the stage and right in time for the school holidays too. Tickets for the shows have been on sale since the 10th of June with ticket prices ranging from Rp150k up to Rp750k. Hurry as the latest news TBJ received from the ticket box stated that the first weekend has almost sold out. For more information contact Convivium on: +62 217 269 963

As the annual Java Rockin’ Land draws ever closer, more and more big name bands are getting announced. Recently confirmed to bring a bit of mellow to this three day rock fest are Australian alternative rock group Frente!, known for such hits as ‘Ordinary Angels’, ‘Accidently Kelly Street’ and the remake of New Order’s classic hit ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’. Some new bands from the local front have also confirmed their presence in the upcoming event including Tengkorak and Jasad, plus erstwhile rockers

Edane, Power Metal, Power Slaves and Parau will also be making a comeback. As the big day gets closer, TBJ will keep readers bang up-to-date on the evolving lineup of performers in this year’s JRL.

Ravelex returns with its annual DJ Competition ‘Ravelex Campus DJ Championship’ to seek out some of today’s young and aspiring DJs. This year’s competition is a little different than usual, and has been turned into a travelling talent scout road show event called ‘Campus Night’. After scouting out the best young DJs from five major cities, a total of twenty-three DJs have made the cut to duke it out in a final battle which will be held from the 1st - 3rd of July at The Piazza, Gandaria City. Like last year the winner of the competition will go on to be a resident DJ in one of Jakarta’s most happening clubs. The final bout will also feature a music seminar about electronic dance music presented by some of today’s leading DJs. Best of luck to all the finalists!

30 years jamming out funky-jazz and pop tunes is an amazing feat for any band, and to celebrate this success, legendary UK group Level 42 will be touring the globe. The band which is now formed by members Mark King, Mark Lindup, Nathan King, Sean Freeman and Gary Husband will be stopping off in Jakarta on the 24th of July to perform at Gran Melia Hotel and Ballroom before continuing to perform in Surabaya on the 26th of July. Original Productions as the promoter of the upcoming concerts have announced that ticket prices will range from around Rp 400k up to Rp 2.5 million.

Level 42

After successfully electrifying the Jakarta crowd several years ago with their hard hitting rock hits, the boys of Linkin Park will return once again to the capital to showcase their latest tunes from their new album ‘A Thousand Suns’. The promoter responsible for bringing the band to perform at Stadion Gelora Bung Karno on the 21st of September is Big Daddy Live Concerts. Many were worried that the chosen venue would be moved like the previously planned Iron Maiden earlier this year, but Big Daddy has made sure that the concert date doesn’t clash with any upcoming soccer games and that the grass would not be damaged in anyway so they are positive that there will be no change in schedule. Tickets for the concert are already available online at www.bigdaddy.com or www.myticket.co.id

HAS BEENDavid Yong Choi is musician of Korean and American descent, whose big break came in 2004 when David won a David Bowie ‘mash-u’p competition, judged by The Thin White Duke himself. He has also won several other competitions, which helped him improve his vocal abilities and performance confidence. In 2008 he released his first album titled ‘Only You’, and two years later followed it up with his sophomore album titled ‘By My Side’. He is not only recognized as a singer, but also as a songwriter as well as a music producer at Warner/Chappel Music. One of his video clips on YouTube has had so many hits that this June he was awarded ‘The 6th Most Subscribed Musician On YouTube’. His single ‘By My Side’ is a popular track currently receiving high radio airplay.

IS NoWIndonesia will be one of David’s stops during his Asia - Pacific Tour, and on the 28th and 29th of June, he’ll be performing at Hard Rock Café in Jakarta as his final stop in Asia before continuing to Australia. HAvE BEENDJ Wen’d is one of the DJs under the highly-respected Sound Syndicated umbrella. Hoping to gain more recognition while improving his mixing skills, he participated in many DJ competitions. In 2007 he came out as one of the finalists at Heineken Thirst, as well as at Juice DJ Quest, and now he is making a name for himself on the local house music scene.

DJ Kimm is a regular at many of the happening parties around Jakarta. Before changing his name, he was known as DJ Qme, but to make his name a little less confusing, he decided to change it up, and is currently a member of Daydow and Kryptonite.

Who doesn’t know this gorgeous femme fatale of the decks. Beginning her career as a fashion model she went on to become a DJ and now is one of the highly acclaimed DJs from Spinach Records DJ management.

ARE NoWWen’d, Kimm and Alannys will take control of the decks for Immigrant’s regular Wednesday ‘Single Malt Night’ event which will be titled ‘Playhouse’. The three DJs will be sharing the decks with DJ Tendy and Renza Moors while MC Cheryl enlivens the night. Househeads of Jakarta: miss this at your peril.

BRNDLS: DRG, MDCN & DGNR8

DRG, MDCN & DGNR8BRNDLS:

Page 37: The Beat Jakarta 42

037 beatmag.com

Feature

Eka Annash mengistilahkannya sebagai, “We made peace with our demons.”

Domestic chaos and prolonged internal problems in Indonesia has inspired The Brandals to write and release DGNR8 (read: ‘degenerate’). The latest album after a drought of four years is a tribute to the great nation of Indonesia, and how the band feels that the country has lost it’s way of late.

This rather cynical viewpoint from the group that now prefers to call themselves ‘BRNDLS’ is further strengthened by the design of the album cover, which is in the shape of drug packaging. According to the band, DGNR8 is “a kind of drug offered to the sick people in the dilapidated condition of the nation”.

Also with the progressive statements, the music direction has changed somewhat as well. The explosive approach of earlier efforts is now more controlled as the quartet grows older and more mature, but the foundation is still rock’n’roll. In one song, ‘Abrasi’, Eka Annash & co. even invited the hip hop living legend, Morgue Vanguard aka Ucok Homicide to rap.

Other than the audio disc, this album has an interesting bonus too: DGNR8: The DVD, which is a documentary movie about the making of the album, including the behind the scenes story about the music and the dynamics of these angry young men.

INSPIRINGEDUCATIONAL MOVEMENT

To improve education in Indonesia, a program called Indonesia Mengajar (Indonesia Teaches) is inspiring young people from

any educational fields to be involved first hand with children around the nation by teaching them in school, for a minimal of one whole year. Their presence is to teach, educate, inspire, and also to abridge between the village life and the modern side of the world. Indonesia Mengajar focuses on teaching Elementary school, which in their view is an important stage of development and very crucial in a child’s future. Also, according to statistics report, the qualities of Elementary school teachers are the least of other grades, and about 75% of them don’t have college degrees. That is why this program is emphasized on Elementary grade.

The brightest graduates of Indonesia are selected from many of the nation’s University. The selection is based on achievements and performances both on and off the campus, also physical and mental endurance, and other important criteria. And of course, the willingness to be placed in a remote region is a key criteria.

According to Anies Baswedan—the founder of the program, young people’s involvement in Indonesia Mengajar will sprout deep empathy on to them

like grass roots absorbing the soil it lives in, which will be one of the essential and important characteristics they will need in order to compete in the global environment. These fresh graduates might endure several challenges while living in remote areas, such as no network coverage for cell phones in certain areas, which in result they might have to go on a few hours bus or boat ride to make a phone call. Or to be up against a whole new culture alone, without a familiar friend beside them. And also, not all of these areas will have electricity or convenient roads and bridges to facilitate their days ahead. But this doesn’t stop them to make a difference for the future of education and to give back to their country. Like the program’s saying, “Setahun Mengajar, Seumur Hidup Menginspirasi”, which means “One Year Teaching, a Lifetime Inspiring”.

For inspiring stories, photos, and descriptions on the program, or if you want a reminder on the next period for registration to be involved first hand, go to www.indonesiamengajar.org.

What music are you into at the moment? Instrumental music by Dustin O'Halloran. He's an indie pianist living in a small Berlin town who made it to Hollywood. My favourites are ‘Lumiere’ and ‘We Move Lightly’. It takes me to a place I never thought existed every time I listen to it. Amazing.

What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it?‘Candy Candy’, the soundtrack. I bought it when I was still little. It's the soundtrack of the most popular Japanese cartoon television series that aired in the 80's in Indonesia. At that time the world was just like a garden of candy… So naive, stress-free. Oh, how I miss Candy Candy...

What are your all-time favourite albums? Why?My all time favourite albums would be anything by Simply Red, Michael Jackson, Sade, Feist, or Kings of Convenience. Never bored of them!

What was the worst record you ever purchased?Had no experience of it.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?Maybe the ocean. Living happily with other fishes in the sea with so many beautiful coral reefs... I could see the sun, moon, stars, sky, pearls, sands, etc.

What song/album do you choose to start your weekend?Anything from Matias Aguayo. Totally love it. It's just “oh yeah…!!!”

And song you choose to end your weekend?Of course ‘Roller Skate’ by Matias Aguayo. The music is really cool. Have a listen so you know that I'm not lying! Very sexy, as well.

When you hear the term ‘go green’, what do you think? Compromise of quality? Well, it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s not a complete change of lifestyle. You can start with little things you can do at home or work. It’s time to give back to mother nature, instead of taking away from her most of the time. Here are some ways:

1Use energy saving light bulbs. It costs a

little more, but in the long run you’ll save

a lot more.

2Discipline yourself in unplugging chargers and devices you don’t need. Don’t leave them lying

around if they’re not being used.

3Plant trees around the house strategically,

if possible shade the air-conditioner unit

from the sun to save energy in heating and

cooling. 4If the weather permits, turn off your air-conditioner and open up the windows and doors,

and enjoy the fresh air.

5Do all your bill payments online to save

energy going out in the car.

6Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. Heating water in washing machines takes up a

lot of energy.

7Make it a habit to turn off the lights when you leave the room.

TO GO GREENEASY WAYS

Page 43: The Beat Jakarta 42

043 beatmag.com

Feature

TO GO GREENEASY WAYS

8Five-minute showers! Make it a

goal for yourself.

9Turn off your computer completely at night.

11If you do not brew your own coffee at home, bring your own cup to the coffee house instead of using a

plastic cup.

15Change your computer to sleep mode if you’re away for more than 20 minutes.

16Use the stairs rather than the lift. Plus, it’s good exercise!

Do this whenever possible, and make it a habit, and you will feel better about yourself and the environment. Give yourself a big pat on the back, you’re officially going green! (Dini Siregar)

10Charge your cell phone during the day, not overnight.

12This particular point maybe not very useful in

Jakarta due to the heavy traffic, but did you

know that driving your car slowly is not very green?

13Some supermarkets in Jakarta now provide cheap reusable bags you can buy, instead of

using plastic bags.

14Make use of your paper to the max. Configure your

printer at the office to print on both sides of the

paper, or use the back side of old documents for faxes, scrap

paper or drafts.

Usually, Indonesian classical musicians seem to get energised to showcase their great talents at beginning of summertime. Since that time is nigh on upon us, prepare yourself for some

seriously great musical treats. The first half of July is definitely an ideal time for some good old Lieder and Beethoven. So, let

us begin with the Chamber Music Recital.

as Schubert’s ‘Der Hirt auf dem Felsen’, Barber’s ‘Dover Beach’, Beethoven and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio and even Martinu’s Flute Trio. There is no point writing about the great achievements that each musician here has achieved, it is simply best to see them directly on stage so that you can witness and experience their greatness.

Following this fantastic recital is a selection of Beethoven Symphonies. Part of Aula Simfonia Jakarta’s monthly program, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra under the lead of Dr. Stephen Tong as conductor is back with more Beethoven greatness in ‘Beethoven Night 4’. This time, they’ve chosen something that is world renowned - none other then the incredible ‘Symphony No. 5’.

Beethoven’s fifth symphony in C minor, Op. 67 is without a doubt the most popular and best-known composition in all of classical music, and one of the most oft-played symphonies. This symphony, especially the four-note opening motifs in particular, are well known worldwide, and has even appeared in popular culture disco and rock’n’roll songs as well as in films and on television.

However, aside from this legendary piece, the orchestra will also perform Beethoven’s ‘Symphony No. 2’ as well as ‘Piano Sonata Op. 27 no. 1’ featuring the wunderkind pianist Kevin Suherman. The soon-to-be seventeen year-old pianist has already had an impressive career considering his young age. Beginning to learn piano at the age of five, Kevin surprised Indonesia by performing 50 of the world’s best classical and jazz songs non-stop without having any music sheets at all, which earned him a special award from the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI). His amazing talent has brought him to perform as soloist in many countries from Austria, Beijing and Singapore. I am quite excited to see how Kevin has grown up, and now he will have the added bonus of maturity to go with his impeccable technique and musical interpretation. Definitely not to be missed!

So there you have it classical music lovers: two fantastic quality classical music performances. Make sure to book your reservation in advance.

A cozy restaurant on Jalan Panglima Polim area has been one of the darlings of Jakarta’s food lovers since 2003. Loosely

translated, Lokananta means a lounge where the gods like to chill, hang out and listen to music. Or something to that effect. At any rate, there are certainly plenty of us mortals that have made this eatery a favourite, and when they decided to spread their wings, Gandaria City mall was the venue of choice. Lokananta opened their second outlet on September 2010. The casual elegance of the décor is complimented nicely with some fake foliage, giving it a ‘terrace’ feel. Some of the crowd favourites like the triple sausage (50k), oxtail dishes (65-68k), and ribs (60k) are available, but they also have some new

items on the menu of late.We started with the potato nachos with strawberry salsa sauce (27k). Forget what you know about Mexican style nachos, this is a cute twist to the old favourite. The traditional toppings of cheese, pico de gallo, and jalapeños are still there, but the tortilla chips are replaced with potato ones and the salsa is entirely new. The blend of strawberry, avocado, tomato and a good dose of chili peppers will definitely make your taste buds dance! Kudos for a good creation like this.Next up, we got to try their new dishes. The grilled salmon (90k) tickled our fancy, with the succulent fish grilled to perfection, accompanied by potato wedges and mixed veggies. The special lemon garlic butter tomato sauce made it all the

more mouthwatering. If you like, you can have the salmon pan fried as well. Afterwards came the steak and rice (95k for tenderloin, or 90k for rib eye), which is a simple dish that hits all the right spot. The juicy steak is put on a bed of rice and served with a side of vegetables and teriyaki sauce. An excellent combo. If you’re that into meat, here’s something that’ll make you jump for joy: the Lokananta meat lover (300k). Well, actually up to four people can enjoy this monster dish. You get four kinds of meat: 200g of tenderloin, 200g of sirloin, 250g of rib eye, plus two pieces of grilled chicken. Now there’s a meaty marvel if I ever saw one! All the steaks and chicken are grilled beautifully, and they come with a couple

of sauces (mushroom and black pepper), mashed potato, and some rye bread. Brilliant!Lokananta has some excellent refreshing drinks of choice. We suggest the green beret which is cabbage (yes, cabbage!), pineapple, and orange (18k). The Lychee Punch features lychee, strawberry and yoghurt (25k), and the choco float consists of choco blend, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, plus an Astor choco stick. Take your pick, they’re all awesome! It’s easy to see why Lokananta is the restaurant of choice of many for so long. The top quality ingredients, creative dishes and drinks, and a welcoming ambiance rank high on all counts. Well recommended. (Budi Iskandar)

It was one of those mini reunions. Some old high school buddies and I had been planning a night out for a while now, and since a couple of us who

live outside of Indonesia happened to be in town, it was the perfect occasion for our meeting.

We wanted an Italian dinner, and decided on Avorio at Plaza Senayan. Since its inception almost three years ago, this stylish restaurant has been serving a mix of hearty classic Italian bistro fare and modern creations. The decor is modern, but with a bit of retro tastefully thrown in. We especially liked the wine cabinet and the Italian posters on the wall.

It’s always nice to see your old friends, and very soon our conversation started to flow freely. (thanks in no small part to the first bottle of wine). The corkage fee at Avorio starts from 200k for regular wine and spirits, and goes up to 250k for the premium stuff.

Yeah, it may be inside a mall, but brace yourself for an amazing Italian epicurean experience that is uniquely Avorio!

But now it was time to eat. We started with the vitello tonnato (68k). This appetizing dish of thinly sliced roasted veal with tuna mayonnaise foam looks like a work of art on the plate. The meat is succulent, and the sauce superb. We also tried the pan fried scallops (110k), which consisted of pieces of giant scallops with balsamic spinach topped with crispy ham. What a great way to start our dinner!

On to the pasta dishes. Avorio prides itself for having homemade pastas and prime quality imported ingredients. Only the best seems to make it to the table, and so with this in mind, we ordered up a couple of tasty ravioli dishes: the salmon ravioli (78k) with lemon cream and dill sauce, and the beetroot ravioli (75k) with brown butter, poppy seed and crispy parma ham.

We also had the sea bass a la carte (95k), which consists of oven-baked pacific sea bass fillet with tomato and black olives. We just had to share the Mexican-style Santa Fe pizza (78k) with spiced chicken, guacamole and jalapeño really made our night.

Avorio does have an extensive selection of wine, but on the night we also decided to give their signature martinis a try. A couple of them made it to our martini ‘hit list’. First, there’s the Bunnylicious (92k), a blend of Frangelico, passion fruit, orange infused gin, shaken vigorously and served straight up martini style. As for the second one, don’t let the cute name fool you: the Tinkerbelle’s Breakfast (92k) is a potent mix of orange, dissolved with Tanqueray Gin, Cointreau and citrus nectar. Gorgeous texture and a bittersweet flavour. Both highly recommended.

Another thing: Please make room for the delectable desserts. We ordered the chocolate devil (48k); layers of chocolate devil cakes with rum, and the chocolate volcano (48k). This warm melted chocolate volcano cake with wild berry and banana ice cream just explodes with taste! The former was sinfully scrumptious, while the latter was just heavenly. There goes our waistline, but it’s so worth it…! After a great night like that, another visit to Avorio is most definitely on the cards methinks.

Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin, He’s Not That Just Into You) adalah seorang pengacara handal di kota New York.

Adapted from a novel written by Ken Bruen, the author of ‘London Boulevard’, this film reflectsthe drama of challenges faced by police working in a modern, multi-cultural society.

Based on the iconic Indonesian 80s serial, this new Catatan Harian Si Boy is not a re-make, but more of regeneration with fresher cast that still keeps the spirit of the original. The story idea is simple: a man finds the best of himself in reaching his dream with guidance from a certain someone’s diary. It will appeal to young people today in it’s own right, whilst also being nostalgic for those who used to follow and admire the 80’s version.

I’ve been having a very uncomfortable situation with my skin lately, where acne seems to pop up every other day because of hormonal imbalances. My skin isn’t exactly acne prone, but I’m sure there are many women out there who experience the same problems as I do due to the monthly visitor...

FIVE ITEMS To GET YoU THRoUGH THE ACNE PHASE

Page 61: The Beat Jakarta 42

Style

061 beatmag.com

Here are five items that I found really help me to get through those weeks where my skin is just not playing ball:

1. Mentholatum Acne Foaming Wash (around Rp 25,000)This is an acne treatment product that is very easy to use, all you need to do is press the pump head and it will dispense a ping pong ball sized blob of foam right away. It has a nice, soft mandarin scent and is able to remove excess sebum and dirt without being too drying. The key ingredient here is isopropylmethylphenol, that will remove bacteria from your skin and help prevent acne from getting any worse.

2.Kiehl’s Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion (Rp 295,000 for 250ml) This actually feels too harsh on my dry skin under normal conditions, but it’s perfect for when skin is extra oily because this blue astringent toner really helps in drying out the acne. It also helps the healing process.

3.Menard Beauness S (Rp 660,000) I’ve written a full review on Beauness S before. Not only does it help your skin in times of change, but also it will help to soothe your acne. You won’t really see the difference right away, but with Beauness S I found acne gets better faster.

4. My Beauty Diary Mask at Moporie (Rp 18,000 each)Because I’ve been depriving my skin of any excess moisturizer with this routine, I opt for My Beauty Diary Mask to give me a soothing and cooling effect. Even though they come in a various berry scents, I choose the yoghurt range because it controls excess sebum, and will dry off to a nice matte finish. In this condition, what I want is a skin that is hydrated enough but not creating too much sebum to aggravate the condition of my acne.

5.Clinique Acne Solutions Spot Healing Gel (Rp 235,000)This is a treatment to heal the acne. It dries to a nice clear film so you won’t be having any trouble if you want to wear makeup. I found this is one of the best acne spot treatments that I’ve ever tried because it really does help heal acne fast.

I used these products only when my skin is in acne prone situation. As for the moisturizer, to make sure that my face gets hydrated enough I opt for moisturizer that targets sensitive skin during this period.

I couldn’t be more thankful to be among the people who watched Sebastian Gunawan’s fashion show last night. Even though I always knew that his creations are undoubtedly beautiful, the dresses showcased in the fashion show titled ‘Reflections of You’ still completely amazed me.

Since the beginning of his fashion career in 1993, Seba has tailored his designs and creations to celebrate women’s beauty. No wonder that his signature styles are feminine, classic, elegant, slim and sophisticated. In this annual fashion show, Seba in collaboration with Christina Panarese presented 77 cocktail dresses and evening gowns from his first line ‘Sebastian Gunawan’ for 2012, and also eight wedding dresses from ‘Sebastian’s Sposa’.

The designer explained that ‘Reflections of You’ is “all about women who live today and whose style is trendy to reflect their personalities. It’s also

about bringing back old fashion elements to inspire future fashion trends”. Each of these styles was found in the fashion show: from soft and feminine to unique and playful dresses.

Drapery has dominated Seba’s designs since his first fashion show in 1993, and now he has developed it into various styles with modern techniques. Not only for light fabrics, but also thick materials, indeed the photos show that most of his creations feature drapery. Slim waists with big skirts were also seen on the runway, with accessories from Rinaldy A Yunardi complementing Seba’s dresses.

The four photography series in New Folder exhibition fall neatly into two categories based on the photographer’s approach to the

idea and reality. The categories are ‘performative’ photography and ‘staged’ photography. At glance, both have almost the same method, the difference lies in the level of intervention and the relationship between objects in reality.

In performative photography, the artist engineers an event that has almost no basis in reality, forming a fiction or a particular metaphor as a vehicle for ideas that they want to convey. The artist has total control over the objects in the picture frame. In ‘Invisible’ by Arif, we can see his intervention shaping the percieved reality. The thought expressed in this series is on the experience of seeing and being seen in a materialistic culture. With this concept, he states that being marginal means being invisible. Figures are camouflaged in the work interacting with other characters nearby including rickshaw drivers, itinerant food vendors and housewives.

Pungky’s performative approach is to create a kind of imitation of animals, more specifically the anatomy of animals. He directs and choreographs the anatomically shaped and adjustable artworks, creating a fiction that reveals a somewhat unique perspective on human and animal behaviour. Of course, there is no counterpart of reality in both series, since the figures are not really complete. This is just fiction, a fictitious event that brings another meaning.

In staged photography, events are engineered, styled and directed to produce dramatisation rather than forming a new event or a fictional event. Here, the

Manipulated Percept ion Caught By the Lens

models portray themselves and dramatise their own lives. The recorded events are real but enhanced by small changes or certain elements. The works of Fehung portray mothers and fathers in clearly staged poses. He directs the poses, but they still act as themselves in their own context and place. This clearly demonstrates the artist’s intention that events are not important, nor are they a metaphor that brings meaning beyond itself.

Abud documents the similarities between some individuals. He compels them to use the same clothes and poses. The results show how easy it is to manipulate the perception of a real person who is nothing more, nothing less than human. The strengths of both series lie in the ability to associate themselves with the audience’s experience.

In the hands of contemporary artists, photography becomes an extremely powerful tool for expressing ideas, not just to preserve memory. Its strength lies in the linkage of the representation of reality. Recorded events have always been important, yet

we are always amazed at the mysteries that arise from the notion that a photograph is not always really ‘true’. @ribosa

From buoys used as a coolant bottles to brushes made into lampshades, Rada Beda (Somewhat Different) Contemporary Design

and the Power of Convention exhibition displays works that do not fit with conventional design. Furniture workmanship and design have combined to create objects of pure function and form that go beyond what people have imagined before.

Design diversity is clearly illustrated by the presence of different works and the total number of objects presented. This exhibition presents a body of work that deviates from the convention based on function, material selection, construction and intentions. Three designers from Bandung - Faisal Habibi, WiyogaMuhardanto and YuliPrayitno - will add to the exhibition and bring the Indonesian context to it.

The designs do not only provoke astonishment, but challenge one to reflect on general expectations and codes of behavior as well as the referential context of firmly established notions, prompting viewers to review traditional fixations.

It is these ‘breaks with the power of convention’ which uncover the various socio-cultural changes that today we face in our daily lives, reflected in the changing trends of mobility, migration, changes in eating patterns and much more.

Overall, the exhibition tries to answer the challenge from curator Volker Albus: “Design differently from the way you have always designed”. Although something may be based on a complex idea, the design must be simple and be understood easily. Design is something that continually deviates from the normal, and likely the result will be an unexpected surprise. @ribosa

ImanELECTROFUX

Domestic Fame :

A man of high dedication to electronic music, still working the low ground and campaigning for the pride of playing in clubs with artsier crowds, or producing and mixing Dub Step. Over to you, Iman Electrofux...

You seem to be addicted to the electronic music movement. Which part of it still keeps you interested?

I’m a fan of electronic hardware. From hobby to movement, I never had a dream of being famous. I just wanted to introduce people to that these tools that can help us craft some good music. It all started in 1992, later ELECTROFUX formed in 1997. The spirit is to proceed the passion within this journey so I can see more Indonesian electronic bands or people starting to use electronic hardware like I do.

Electronic musicians (especially beat producers) meditate on their sound for days or weeks. Is Iman one of those? Tell us the most unusual production or mixing experience...

When I create music it can take weeks, but to get the feel right I can do it in 24 hours. Depends on the mood, like Yacko’s song ‘Jangan Berisik’ (don’t be noisy), I created it in 24 hours and 24 hours more of mixing. For unusual gigs, I played once in front of a warung muslim, just right in front of it. In the

Gilis I played in front of a hotel room with a little bit of Dubstep in it…hahahah. At Batu Karas, me and Rock&Roll Mafia set up our gear and played at the hotel Itu. The owner loved it since we brought entertainment for the guests.

In a previous interview a few years ago you mentioned “these tools are my escape”. Tell us how far music can effect your personal psychology.

These electronic hardware machines are actually what keep me alive, ‘cause I have nothing but skill, and I don’t really know what other potential I have. I’ve spent hours, days, weeks pushing and controlling these buttons around, so frankly I don’t have time to think much, everything is spontaneous. Every kind of music gives different nuances, rock, funk, breakbeat, drum&bass or even dubstep. From these machines I can reprogram songs I like. About psychology, maybe I’m a lunatic after all! Haha, something in my mindset is not normal, that’s what my friends say. I once had a period of depression. But these machines finally made me a useful person after all.

You have played far and wide, any interesting stories?

I’ve been playing gigs in Sweden, Thailand, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur. Most memorable is Thailand Koh Pahngan & Kuala Lumpur. Koh Pahngan 96, it happened by coincidence - another DJ from France was supposed to play but since he consumed too many mushrooms he became the crowd, hahaha. So I stepped onto the decks with a cd player and a double tape deck. Funny story is that I had to rewind the tapes with a pencil hahahahahah! But the night was so fun. Kuala Lumpur, has the craziest crowd and I learned lots of Dubstep from there with Ejan & Anowl Gazi (Resistive) & Bud Culture since they sent different Dubstep influences my way.

Pushing this far for a career under the name of Electrofux in Bali... Has it been a long holiday or a dragging struggle?

Bali is home for me, 10 years and counting now and I’ve fallen in love with the island. I will not move to another place in the world. Once I move, I may be overloaded with party life and such, but this is never for long, I’d miss Bali too much. It’s like a calling from back home. The most beautiful place is when you can have a holiday and work in one place. Here I can spread the music influences. Once I gave some tracks to a Japanese guy, 2 years later he became a famous DJ thanks to my songs. When he came back to Bali and met me, I didn’t even have the songs anymore hahaha! Weird story.

Electrofux in five years?

A difficult question since I only can think until tomorrow. I’m not a fan of planning. Depends on the project though, like Yacko’s song ‘Jangan Berisik’ I don’t think of anything but to do the remix full

hearted and the next coming year the remix hits no.1 at Radio Paranoia. I’d rather go with the flow aja. If you do good things, you will get a good outcome.

You introduced dubstep to the island. What’s next?

Heheheh not really, Reno Pratama & Andi Bogel are the ones who introduced it to me first, I just stretched the genre. I was once kicked out from my workplace for playing too much Dubstep, but after two months my remix hit no.1 on the radio and from

there on I got sponsored by Obey, Famous Stars & Straps, Vestal, Macbeth, Skull Candy, Potmeetspop, Cotton Colony and Pukulrata Clothing. Touring Asia sponsored by Obey, came from the dubstep… So the next step is to just do what I like and create as many dubstep gigs as I can. But it’s a bit hard since sometimes in a Dubstep gig, chaos happens and club owners are afraid of these demonic troops

hahahah. I get emails and messages on Facebook from France, Germany, UK, US etc just asking when is the next gig. Almost five years playing Dubstep and now I can feel the progress. I hope Indonesia will accept Dubstep.

Shoutout to Beatmag…

Watch out for Radical Regime’s Dubstep gig with ELECTROFUX & JonskeeMC, every Friday at Submerge drum&bass/dubstep gig at Mbargo and be prepared for HeartCandle Bali’s born breed Dubstep producers & Dunie (Oracle Lab) for his Drum&Bass gigs. My new project ‘Le Fux’ with Lucyna Ciaston (Poland),we will be doing live PA/DJ sets of funk & other things. Please keep Bali clean cause its my home, you wouldn’t want me to come and trash your home right?

I feel that I’m pretty well qualified to have an opinion on Japanese restaurants since my better half is from the land of the rising sun, and so has dragged me around most of the Japanese eateries in town. Evoking the Kyoto style (I’m reliably informed), the restaurant itself sits upstairs at Gosyen Hotel and definitely gives off that urban cool vibe – like you are back in the big city instead of on a tropical island.

Smartly decked out in bold blacks and reds with minimalist lines and traditional stone murals the interior does a good job of making sure you get into the Japanese ambience before perusing the vast menu options. Helpfully numbered for each item, everything you’d expect (and some things you wouldn’t) is featured on the menu, which treads a neat line between traditional and modern. Tempura and sashimi sit alongside fusion rolls and even a few Western offerings like pastas and steaks.

A selection of appetizers, salads and light bites such as the tempura ramen noodles are perfect for kicking off proceedings, but if you’re anything like me then you’ll order up a hot green tea and bowl of salty, steaming edamame (10k++). The very epitome of morish, I could quite happily throw these beans down all evening, but tonight of course, there’s work to be done.

Our smiling chef sends out his first creation for our noshing pleasure in the form of the beef carpaccio (45k++). Thinly sliced Aussie beef that could almost be spread like butter sits under a mound of fresh mixed salad with Parmesan and wasabi pepper dressing. The fork has a bit of an issue with the tender beef, so it’s out with the cutlery and in with the chopsticks. (Anyone else noticed how much more practical chopsticks are for eating salad?) Shortly after comes the massive wakame and seafood salad (a bargain-tastic 30k++) with tomato relish and shoyu dressing.

Sailing over to the table next comes the signature Gion sashimi boat (150k++) that bears the chef’s selection of the day’s freshest and rawest fish between its miniature wooden boughs. Quite the centrepiece, it seems almost a shame to pick apart. Almost. I have to admit that I’m slightly biased in

this area since sashimi + wasabi + pickled ginger + soy = a very happy food reviewer, so I’ll just say that the fish itself is as fresh and succulent as you’ll find anywhere. Oishiii. To give an idea of some of the more modern creations, next up comes the cowboy sushi roll (85k++) with asparagus enoki tempura wrapped with sirloin steak which is duly destroyed by all in a flurry of chopsticks and approving nods. We just about manage to squeeze in a green tea crème brulee (27k++), which gives the perfect sugary counterpoint to the soy and wasabi that are still clearing out my nasal passage.

Gion Japanese Resto & Café is open for lunch and dinner every day, and also hosts birthdays, meetings, and any special occasion that is in need of Japaneasing.

Dynamic Duo plus One

Like Batman and Robin, Hungarian DJs Myon and Shane 54 swooped down to Klapa to give the crowd a taste of their house music sets

aided by Armin Van Buuren’s vocalist Aruna. First up on deck duty was Aruma, but this time she let the decks do the singing while bikini dancers kept the heat up. The crowd consisted of members from 14 car clubs in Bali and a motorbike club all up to party until dawn. As the night continued to get rowdier, Myon and Shane 54 took their places in the booth to unleash their musical justice that had everyone’s heads nodding until the end of the show.

Odysseys Surf School celebrated their 8th Anniversary last week at Planet Hollywood in appreciation to the staff for their loyalty and hard work to the company. They Come a Wailing…

The Babylon of Kuta, Hard Rock Café, hosted The Wailers to an overtly enthusiastic crowd. Although many of the original Wailers were not

present, the band belted out all the fan favourites that put reggae and Jamaica on the pop culture map. It’s very rare to go to a show where everyone knows all the lyrics to every song. Although we’ll never be able to see a Bob Marley live in concert, everyone was Bob Marley that night and that’s what made it special.

Beauty and the Beats Returns…

Once again the people of Bali got the chance to be swept away by the beauty and electro beats of model/DJ Miss Nine who returned

to the island of the gods for a show at SOS Supper Club. Not alone on the decks, she shared duties with French DJ Pablo Valentino as they took turns entertaining the mainly expat crowd.

Massive Deck

It seemed that this weekend many clubs were showcasing

spectacular collaborations, and Deejay Club not wanting to miss out, presented the thumping combo of DJ Andre Dunant on the decks and Vera bashing the drums. A wonderful and harmonious partnership that had everyone dancing until the sun was already high in the sky.

Punk Goes Techno

Well known Bali punk rock band, Superman is Dead

collaborated with the big daddy of the Indonesian dance scene, DJ Romy for an unexpecting mash up of great tunes. SiD were up first performing three of their thrashing hits, before the curtains came down to show DJ Romy on the decks, ready to mix it up with the boys. The combo of punk rock and dancing beats had everyone dancing, before SiD left Romy to fend for himself and end the show in style.
