SUNDAY REFLECTION Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, with a main theme for this week as one of God’s calling of His People to life and to conversion. Through the waters of baptism, we were all called to this conversion, and continue to do so as we renew the promise we, or our parents and godparents, made for us at our baptism. Water gives earthly life, and in the sacrament of baptism, this water gives us the promise of Eternal Life. In Jesus the Christ, this Eternal Life is Christ Himself. This Sunday concludes the Christmas liturgical season, and on Monday, we began the ordinary Time during which, the Church celebrates the fullness of the mystery of the Lord Jesus Christ. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM The seven sacraments— Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Communion, Confession, Marriage, Holy Orders, and the Anointing of the Sick— are the life of the Catholic Church. Each sacrament is an outward sign of an inward grace. When we participate in them worthily, each provides us with graces—with the life of God in our soul. In worship, we give to God that which we owe Him; in the sacraments, He gives us the graces necessary to live a truly human life. The Sacrament of Baptism, the first of the three sacraments of initiation, is also the first of the seven sacraments in the Catholic Church. It removes the guilt and effects of Original Sin, and incorporates the baptized into the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ on earth. The Sacrament of Baptism has six primary effects, which are all supernatural graces: The removal of the guilt of both Original Sin (the sin imparted to all mankind by the Fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden) and personal sin (the sins that we have committed ourselves). The remission of all punishment that we owe because of sin, both temporal (in this world and in Purgatory) and eternal (the punishment that we would suffer in hell). The infusion of grace in the form of sanctifying grace (the life of God within us); the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit; and the three theological virtues. Becoming a part of Christ. Becoming a part of the Church, which is the Mystical Body of Christ on earth. Enabling participation in the sacraments, the priesthood of all believers, and the growth in grace. LECTIO DIVINA As a result of the extensive renova- tions underway at St. Michael’s Cathedral, Lectio Divina with Cardinal Collins will travel throughout the arch- diocese this year. VOCATIONS As John the Baptist introduced the people of his time to Jesus, a voice from heaven said, “You are my Son, the Beloved, with you I am well pleased.” Per- haps God is calling you to do the same in our time.
