Title: 150 Stories Author: Nataniel

Here is a compilation of 150 stories in both English and Afrikaans, from previous publications penned by the wonderfully bizarre South African Icon, Nataniel. Art is free, and any individual that is unable to enjoy it on some level, must be deprived.

Nataniel has the ability to take that which is most mundane in our world, people that we encounter on a daily basis, our very selves, and draws out the exquisite. Told with honesty and brutality I marvel at the parallels drawn between him, myself and almost all the characters. This is because this man unashamedly stands up for and exposes with pride most of the things us regular folk prefer to camouflage. Never mind alternative, Nataniel takes the cake.

The stories are really short, just long enough to get the imagination going. So descriptive it feels like voyeurism, leaving a lingering combination of humour and unrest vying for your attention. The author has an incredible knack to create colour and theatre with words, satisfying a deep-seated hunger for art, humour and pathos, which, with a sudden burst of energy, makes me experience and look at the world around me with a fresh pair of eyes.

Each addition is valuable and will leave you wanting more. Put this one on your Christmas list!

Title: Why Can’t I Tickle Myself? Compiled by: Gemma Elwin Harris

A lot of children, no matter how fantastic the story is, are just not interested in reading… fiction! This comes as a great surprise to us parents who lovingly raised our offspring with Julia Donaldson, Dr Seuss and Jez Alborough. When children reach the age of approximately 9, they are forced to do a lot of things, including reading out loud in class. These reluctant readers have simply just not discovered the utter delight of reference and biographies.

This book is a compilation of intelligent answers to a lot of crazy questions only children are open-minded enough to think up. The authors are all very important people, ranging from Doctorates, Professors, and philosophers to extreme sports woman, authors and the list goes on. The information is passed on in such an exciting way, that kids from age of 9 to 12 can relate to the vocabulary and tone. I couldn’t help but get the feeling that I was part of an exciting science experiment, to be wowed each time by the result!

Fun is incorporated on each page, a discovery of knowledge that enlightens us on the full range of life, history and science. Your little Einstein will put your general knowledge to shame with solid info from Aristotle to Coke to why bones are not brittle.

The book is in aid of NSPCC – .“Cruelty to children must stop. Full stop.”

Title: Good Morning Mr MandelaAuthor: Zelda la Grange

Of all the biographies of our great former president, Good Morning Mr Mandela is indeed a cut above the rest. The account of Zelda Le Grange who served as his assistant for almost two decades is as heartwarming as it is factual. Le Grange may not be a writer but what she lacks in literary prowess, she more than makes up for in honesty and the ability to recall details of Mandela (or Kuhlu as she fondly refers to him throughout the book) in astounding detail.

She doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable truths and some of her recollections will bring you to tears. Covering everything from how she started off as a fastidious supporter of the Conservative party who fully believed in the Apartheid system to the Diplomat who tried to sabotage a fundraising program, to the blunders made after Mandela’s passing. Beyond the exciting experiences, which includes everything from meeting Queen Elizabeth to touring exotic countries, what really comes through in the book is how Mandela’s generosity and overwhelming capacity for forgiveness changed not only the legislation of South Africa but also the mindset of its people. This book is a must read for every South African.

The Stage DoorA place that has exceptional character and equally good food is The Stage Door at the Phoenix Hotel in Chapel Street, Central.

I can’t help but feel a little nostalgic each time I visit, as the place invokes fond memories of my youth; my first visit to a steakhouse, with the cast iron plates and all the delicious flavours I experienced eating a really good steak. They have captured that charm in keeping their food simple and honest, but at the same time great care is taken in the quality.

To say the place has character is a massive understatement! With sawdust floors and walls decorated with posters, photographs and other memorabilia, you will be entertained by visual delights for hours as you enjoy your meal.

I also find that the Stage Door is a little ironic, in a way. Their menus, staff t-shirts and portrayed attitude is that you must not expect anything special – and yet that is exactly what you get. Great service, food and atmosphere, and an experience that will definitely have you eager to return for more!

With the numerous reserved tables I see when we visit, it is obvious to me that their approach is not simply to ‘turn tables”, but rather to caringly make lifelong friends out of their patrons.

If you are looking for a fantastic, wholesome meal, consider The Stage Door at the top of your list of quiet, quaint places to visit.

MOVEMBER The month of Moustache Madness

CAZ&CREW | 15

Page 16: The Bay Life - Issue 01

November is approaching fast, and with it the opportunity for men to take on the Movember challenge – to grow a moustache after starting clean shaven on the 1st of the month!

What is Movember?Movember is more than just an excuse for men to avoid shaving for a month! It is an annual campaign in 21 countries around the globe that started in Australia in 2003. The organisation’s vision is to change the face of men’s health by getting men to grow moustaches for the month while raising funds and awareness for men’s health issues, including prostate and testicular cancers: putting a fun twist on a serious topic and using the moustache as a catalyst to drive awareness. Movember is a great opportunity for men to get involved, and effectively become walking-talking billboards for men’s health issues, driving conversation, and in turn awareness, while securing donations or sponsorship for their moustaches through their grooming efforts and fine moustachery. In doing this, the campaign helps to remove the stigma attached to these serious men’s health issues and essentially saves lives through promoting early detection and by driving survivorship programmes.

Mo SistasWomen are reminded that Movember is not only for their hairier halves – Mo Sistas play an important role in acting as catalysts, encouraging the men in

their lives to sign up, rallying the men in the office into teams, all the while pledging their support and opening dialogue around men’s health issues. Mo Sistas can also sign up and pledge their support on www.movember.com, and currently make up about 10% of the sign ups.

Mo BrosMen who participate in Movember are known as Mo Bros, and can register on the website www.movember.com from 15th September onwards to pledge their support and join in the fun. Upon registering, there is the choice to participate as an individual or to start or join a team – which has proven to be more fun and effective in creating awareness. The rules are simple, once registered or reregistered (as required each year for every campaign), Mo Bros start clean shaven on 1 Movember and grow a mo for the month, pledging funds and sponsorship towards their mo growing efforts, which is tracked on their Mo Space pages on the website.

Where Do The Funds Go?The funds raised by Movember’s Mo Bros’ & Mo Sistas’ efforts fund survivorship and research programmes that are developed in conjunction with Movember South Africa’s men’s health partner, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). These programmes, in their pilot phases, aim to provide men with the best choices and treatment options available for several men’s

health issues, including prostate and testicular cancer.

Official Movember rules for growing and grooming a Mo:1. Every year Mo Bros and Mo Sistas

have to re-register on movember.com from 15 September when the new campaign and website goes live. Each Mo Bro must begin the 1st of Movember with a clean shaven face, growing and grooming a moustache for the month – the helpful styleguide on the website will help you choose your ideal ‘home grown’ moustache.

2. For the entire month of Movember each Mo Bro must grow and groom a moustache.

3. There is to be no joining of the Mo to your side burns. That’s considered a beard.

4. There is to be no joining of the handlebars to your chin. That’s considered a goatee.

5. Each Mo Bro must conduct himself like a true gentleman.

Sharon Jessup is passion personified. Her bubbly, energetic personality and optimistic outlook on life is very contagious – it’s hard to believe that she was once a Public Prosecutor!

In 2009, she followed her passion and started Extreme Boot Camp. Today, 5 years later, Boot Camp Academy SA has branches in Port Elizabeth, Jefferies Bay and Pietermaritzburg, and will soon be launching in Pretoria. The academy already has a large following of members who train on a weekly basis.

Sharon’s busy day starts at 4:30 am as her first class is at 5 am. She does 3 classes a day but only fully participates in 1. In between classes she fits in breakfast with her husband and son, does admin and various research on nutrition and fitness, fits in a run (anywhere between 5km and 14km) and spends time building her brand through networking.

by: Caryn Smith

It’s highly apparent that Sharon is very driven to achieve her vision, which is ultimately to reduce the chronic disease rate in South Africa. 98% of South Africans do not take part in any sport. Her mission, through BCASA, is to inspire and motivate these people to start exercising and to change their lifestyles from sedentary to active, thereby bringing about positive changes to the physical, mental and emotional aspects of their persona. Once you know that you can push through your limits at bootcamp, you naturally start applying this to your everyday life too, and therefore bootcamp has a very positive spill-over effect.

Sharon is focusing on families as Bootcamp caters for everyone’s needs. You work to your own limitations and fitness level through custom designed workouts in an outdoor environment. She is currently working hand in hand with schools in Port Elizabeth to integrate Bootcamp and to offer it as a sport.

THE LEGAL IMPLICATIONS OF SAYING “I DO”

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?

In South Africa there are three marriage options:

1. In community of property (what’s mine is yours, what’s yours is mine)

2. Out of community of property with accrual (what we collect during the marriage is ours)

3. Out of community of property without accrual (what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is yours)

IN COMMUNITY OF PROPERTY (IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO HAVE A MARRIAGE CONTRACT)

In South African Law, a marriage will automatically be in community of property if you do not sign an Antenuptial Contract before the marriage ceremony. This means that from the date of your marriage you will share all your property and all your debts (past, present and future) in one joint estate.

ADVANTAGES

In many ways this system may sound fair, because it is in the spirit of marriage and partnership that everything is shared, and it creates legal and financial equality of both parties.

DISADVANTAGES

There are serious disadvantages to being married in community of property because although you will share each other’s assets, you will also share each other’s liabilities. So if either spouse faces financial difficulties, all the combined assets are at risk from your creditors. Because you will also be sharing all the debts of the past, present and future, you are also liable for the debts of the other spouse prior to the marriage as well as the debts during the marriage. If one of you goes insolvent the joint estate may be sequestrated

TWO TYPES OF ANTENUPTIAL CONTRACTS

There are two types of Antenuptial Contracts.

If you are married out of community of property, you have to sign an Antenuptial Contract. An Antenuptial Contract must be signed prior to the marriage ceremony for the marriage to be out of community of property.

The two types of marriage contracts are:

Out of community of property with accrual. This means that there will be equal sharing in what is built up during the marriage. Who is it for? This type of marriage is perhaps the fairest system, and it is certainly the most popular choice. It is suited to couples who are planning to have children because it recognises non-financial contribution to the marriage, such as looking after the home, or being the home maker, nurturer and care giver of the children. What we collect during the marriage is ours, and what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is yours.

Out of community of property without accrual. In this type of marriage there is no sharing. Who is for? A non-accrual Antenuptial Contract may be most appropriate where couples have already acquired most of their ultimate wealth. If there is not likely to be substantial gains during the course of the marriage to share, it is particularly suited to these type of couples who do not wish to share in what is made during the marriage if the marriage ends.

WHY SIGN AN ANTENUPTIAL CONTRACT?

There is a common misconception that an Antenuptial Contract is a divorce contract!

The truth is that an Antenuptial Contract is a marriage contract that will help you

to plan your marriage relationship with your spouse in a structured way based on a clear understanding from the start of your marriage. Estate planning plays a very important part of the marriage relationship as well as protecting your assets to protect you as a couple against the outside world.

It is important to remember that the word “ante” comes from the Latin word meaning “before”, so this is a before marriage contract. It does not come from the word “anti”, which means against marriage contract.

HOW DOES THE ACCRUAL WORK?

The principle of the accrual system is that what is built up during the marriage is shared; the idea is that each party will keep what they had at the start of the marriage and then share any gains or losses made during the marriage. The increase in the estate is calculated and an amount is transferred from one spouse to the other so that there is an equal amount of sharing. The commencement values, or specific excluded assets, must be declared at the start of the marriage and will not be shared with the other spouse if the marriage ends by death or divorce.

To calculate what has been built up during the marriage, the total net assets at the accrual date are calculated, while the net assets from before the marriage that are not shared are deducted. What is left is the accrual, or increase, which shows what has been built up during the course of the marriage. This increase in the two estates is added up and divided equally between them.

Many couples elect to exclude certain assets. For example: property, shares, business or loan accounts, a trust, a future pension benefit or insurance policies and income. Gifts and inheritances are usually subject to the

condition that they will not be shared under the accrual system.

ADVANTAGES OF BEING MARRIED OUT OF COMMUNITY OF PROPERTY WITH ACCRUAL

A marriage contract will keep all the advantages but avoid all the disadvantages of marriages in community of property. Being married out of community of property recognises the modern perception of marriage as a partnership in all aspects and recognises emotional and physical support as contribution to the marriage in additional to financial ones. This system is based on an equal contribution to the marriage and therefore the parties should share equally the benefits gained during the marriage. The regime is designed to offset the kind of injustices that used to occur when a woman married under an Antenuptial Contract, spent many years running the home and raising children, but got no recognition for her contribution to her estate.

Asset protection is important in that your assets are now protected from the risk of creditors. Because there are two separate estates, specific assets of the spouse can be protected from creditors by being placed in the name of the

spouse which is not likely to be declared insolvent.

In this way assets and liabilities are shared in the hearts of the couple, but they are separate in the minds of the outside creditors. Being married out of community of property gives you the freedom and independence to manage your own property, finances, and bank accounts. A further advantage is that there will be no problem with regards to the deceased spouse’s estate being wound up and the other spouse having to wait for access to continue to use and maintain the assets. There will be no freezing of the joint estate as effectively there is no joint estate, because you each retain your own separate estates.

WHAT IF WE DON’T SIGN AN ANTENUPTIAL CONTRACT?

It is very important to sign the contract before you get married, in front of a notary public. This contract must then be registered at the Deeds Office. Please note that if you need an Antenuptial Contract after you are married, this is going to be a very expensive exercise as you will need to approach the High Court and bring an application for the approval of all your creditors which is an expensive and time consuming exercise.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When must we do it? An Antenuptial Contract must be signed before you get married. Since this is such an important step in the marriage process, please get it ticked off your list as soon as possible.

What is an Antenuptial Contract? An Antenuptial Contract is a legally binding contract entered into by the couple before their marriage. It sets out ownership of assets in separate estates and excludes liability for each other’s debts.

How long does it take? It only takes a few moments for you to meet with your attorney and to get the documents drafted. It shouldn’t take more than 60 minutes in consultation with the attorney to draft and sign the necessary documentation.

How much does it cost? An Antenuptial Contract will include a consultation fee, a drafting fee, Deeds Office registration and lodgement fee - approx. R2 000.00 plus VAT.

Must we sign in person? It is preferable to sign in person, but alternatively you can decide to sign by Power of Attorney.

Chances are good that at least once or twice per year you vow to commit to an exercise program. If you’ve had trouble sticking with it, you’re certainly not alone. Yet there are so many compelling reasons to make the commitment again and stick with it; if getting fit and being healthy is important to you, and it should be, you will find a way.

So start today! Use these tips to help you make exercise part of your life.

Set S.M.A.R.T GoalsIn our fitness world, a S.M.A.R.T goal is one that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, and one that you can Reward yourself for, as long as you meet it within a certain Time.

Meeting goals is satisfying, and it helps build momentum. Just pay close attention to the “attainable” part, because unrealistic goals set you up to fail. Rather than saying that you are

going to exercise an hour per day every day, aim at 30 minutes, 2 – 3 days per week, and know that you are able to do this. You can always increase the frequency and duration as you become fitter.

Vow to Take More Steps Every DayFor years we’ve been urged to take 10 000 steps every day, but we’re falling short. A typical woman takes just over 5 000 steps a day, and a man around 7 000. To ensure that you get your 10 000 steps per day, park further away from the shops or the gym or better still, walk there! Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator. Walk your dogs – they will love you for it! Go for a walk on the beach or in the park. Pack a picnic lunch and go for hike; just get out there and walk!

Movement MattersEven if weight loss isn’t your goal, you should still aim to increase your daily activities to maintain general good health.

In a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers asked healthy young men to significantly reduce the number of steps they took each day, dropping from an average of 6,000 to 1,350 steps a day. Within just 2 weeks, their insulin levels rose by nearly 60%, putting them at risk for diabetes, and their abdominal fat increased by 7% even though they hadn’t gained any overall weight.

So what is the moral of the story? Move people, MOVE!!! This time of the year is a time for new beginnings, so why not get out there and get active? To help you with this I’ve put together a short little routine you can do in the comfort of your own home.

What a few weeks the Travel Industry has had! It just re-affirms the saying in Travel Agent circles that in our business you can never say you know, or have seen, everything!

Firstly, we were very suddenly, and without any prior warning, told that the Department of Home Affairs would be implementing new measures for child travellers. For any family travelling with children under the age of 18, this created utter chaos as this new regulation would basically give them only a few days to a month at most if they had planned holidays for August or September. This affected not only clients travelling out of SA, but also into SA. Thankfully, after much input from organisations like ASATA and its Trade partners, the new ruling will now only take effect at the end of May 2015, which gives clients more than enough time to get their Children’s Unabridged Birth Certificates. This can be done at Home Affairs by going to see them with both parent’s ID books, as well as the children’s, and they will start the process of getting the Certificates issued.

The Travel Trade has also had to deal with the outbreak of the Ebola virus in countries like Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal and Congo. This has put a huge strain on the Travel Industry, with many Airlines denying travel both to Nationals of these countries, and to many Corporate business travellers in South Africa who have had to postpone their trips to these areas. With no definitive cure yet in sight, many airlines are still taking very strict measures to avoid carrying Nationals of these countries to other countries, and vice versa, at least until some final cure or solution has been achieved.

On top of all of that, Air France‘s pilots also decided to strike for several days in September. This caused huge problems for clients, some of mine included, as the internal European flights were hardest hit and many travellers had to make alternative arrangements in getting from point A to point B to make their International flight home.

All of this has once again reminded me of the most important thing you could do when you go on a holiday/trip – make sure you take out Travel Insurance! I have had so many occasions where people try to save a few hundred by not taking out cover, only to find themselves the unlucky ones overseas who’ve had to deal with illness and injury. I believe it’s better to be safe than sorry, and in this changeable industry the best thing you can do before getting on the aircraft or cruise is to make sure you are organised when it comes to medical and baggage cover.

Here’s hoping that the next few weeks will prove to be much more calm and routine than the last two months!

ABOUT JOAN GOOSENJoan Goosen studied Science at University and intended to work in Chemistry but due to circumstances ended up teaching mathematics in secondary schools. She taught mostly in private schools, in Port Elizabeth at Holy Rosary Convent and Trinity High School. She and Peggy Cathro, a pre-school teacher started Aurora

Stimulation Centre in 1978 to assist children with handicaps.

She noticed when the older generation passed on many family recipes were lost to those who followed and so she wrote up a set of recipes for her granddaughters. The recipe here is one of those.

INGREDIENTS: • 1 tin condensed milk• 250 ml cottage cheese or

cream cheese• 60ml water• 125 ml lemon juice• 10ml gelatin• 250 ml cream

Make a biscuit crust as desired. Add the lemon juice to the condensed milk. In a separate bowl beat the cream till stiff. Fold in the cheese. Dissolve the gelatin in the water (I do this in the microwave). Add to the cream mixture. Then add the condensed milk mix and stir well. Pour into the biscuit crust and put in the fridge.

TOPPING:• 1 tin black cherries without

stones• 10 ml cornflour or custard

powder.

Drain the cherries putting the juice into a pot. Heat the juice and thicken with the corn flour dissolved in a little water. Arrange the drained cherries on the cheese cake and pour over the thickened juice, spreading well. Put in fridge to set.

Other fruit may be used in the topping – for instance granadilla pulp, youngberries, canned strawberries or even fresh strawberries, some of which can be cooked slightly to make the sauce.

The Aurora Special Care Centre caters for profoundly mentally and physically disabled children and adults. The centre was established in 1978 with just 6 children and has, since, with the love and support of many caring friends, grown into a caring “home from home” for 40 full time residents, 12 mildly handicapped adults in a group home and 100 other children and adults who attend the stimulation centre daily.

As you walk through the doors to the Aurora Special Care Centre you are immediately overwhelmed by the friendliness of the staff. They are the selfless, loving, caring and nurturing individuals who provide support to the profoundly mentally and physically handicapped adults and children who either live in the home or frequent the stimulation centre daily.

I toured the centre and nothing could prepare me for the amount of love these

adults and children showed. There was no bitterness or anger or awkwardness for being handicapped. At every classroom I was greeted with smiles and friendly hellos and even one surprising hug that nearly knocked me off my feet.

The stimulation centre runs from 8 am – 12 pm. The residents are brought through for the morning and there are 4 sponsored buses that fetch the children daily from PE and Uitenhage. The children and adults are divided into classrooms of between 8 and 12 people, according to age and ability, and have a teacher and an assistant. Their day is filled with music therapy, wheelchair dancing, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and light therapy.

Being a Non-Profit Organisation, the centre relies heavily on the help of donors, volunteers and the community. They receive little help from the Government; only R17 per child for the

days that they attend the centre. The majority of the residents cannot afford to pay their full fees and some cannot afford to pay anything at all. The centre holds fundraising events throughout the year but the shortfall is still staggering.

THE AURORA RECIPE BOOK was recently launched and features local people and celebrities sharing their favourite recipes. The cost is R120 and is available from Aurora, their charity shop at 50 Westbourne Road and The 2 Fat Butchers in Walmer. All funds raised from the recipe book will go to the centre. We will be showcasing a few of these recipes throughout the coming year, but highly recommend that you go out and buy yourself a copy. With Christmas fast approaching it would make a perfect gift as well, because you will be giving twice!

Your help will enable a child or adult to live the best possible life their handicap allows.

A stone’s throw away from Port Elizabeth lies the Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve. After a quick 30 minute drive, you arrive in the heart of nature’s wonderland.

The prime purpose of this 500 hectare reserve is to propagate and protect the unique indigenous flora. It is home to an extraordinary diversity and splendour of Fynbos, succulents, Proteas, Ericas and other indigenous flora. There is a small information centre at the entrance to the reserve that displays various labelled specimens found in the reserve.

The soulful silence, subtle scents of Fynbos in the air, and panoramic views

of Lady’s Slipper’s rolling hills of different green hues and textures, dotted with the odd splash of pink and yellow from clusters of indigenous flora, makes the reserve a treat for all the senses.

For the energetic and adventurous, the reserve offers many hiking trails of varying lengths and a mountain bike route. I took the lazy man’s option, packed a picnic lunch and explored the reserve in the comfort of my car. There are a few picnic sites along the dirt road, but the best one is at the lookout over the gorge with the bridge balancing precariously between its edges.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Take the N2 out of the city towards Cape Town. After 40 km turn left off the N2 to Van Stadens Pass. The entrance to the reserve is on the right hand side, less than a kilometre from the N2.

The gates open from 8 am to 5 pm and there is no entry fee.
