Applications to Consider: 1. Baptism is a sacred act, which we should always hold in

reverence. (See Romans 6:1-6, Colossians 2:12; 3:1; 1 Peter 3:21).

2. A meaningful prayer life should begin at our conversion. (Luke 3:21) At baptism we become children of God (Galatians 3:26-27). Then we can say, “Our Father”.

3. As a new convert, we should start to work for Jesus (Luke 3:21-23). Jesus: 30 years old. Paul (Acts 9:20), Early church (Acts 2:42; 5:42; 8:1-4). We have been saved to serve and converted to convert (1 Thess. 1:9).

4. Often, our severest temptations come after our conversion (Mark 1:1:11-12). (See Jason the new convert in Acts 17:19. Know that God is faithful (1 Corinthians 10:13).

5. We should always long to hear the voice of God (Matthew 3:17). Jesus heard the words, “Well done”.

6. The Lord never asks anything of us in which Jesus didn’t model (1 Peter 2:21-22).

What Pleases the Lord?

• Faith – Hebrews 11:6 • A Thankful Heart – Ps. 69:30-31 • Obedience – Colossians 3:20 • Spirituality – Romans 8:8 • Doing Good – Hebrews 13:16;

Phil 4:18.

Why Stress Baptism? (Matthew 3:13-17)

Water stands between the sinner and cleansing (Ephesians 5:26). Water stands between the sinner and sanctification (Ephesians 5:26). Water stands between the sinner and putting away sins (Colossians 2:11-13). Water stands between the sinner and new life in Christ (Ephesians 2:6). Water stands between the sinner and quickening with Christ (Ephesians 2:5). Water stands between the sinner and forgiveness (Colossians 1:13-14). Water stands between the sinner and the kingdom (John 3:5). Water stands between the sinner and the blood of Christ (John 19:34). Water stands between the sinner and a good conscience (1 Peter 3:21). Water stands between the sinner and the promise through Christ (Acts 2:39). Water stands between the sinner and the body (1 Corinthians 12:12). Water stands between the sinner and salvation (1 Peter 3:21). Water stands between the sinner and sonship (Galatians 3:26-27).

The Blessing of Baptism

1

• Jesus is our example. Our Lord never requires anything for which he did not set the example for us (1 Peter 2:21-22). Those who refuse to be baptized are not emulating the example of Jesus Christ; for, he was baptized.

• Jesus demonstrated the importance of baptism. He walked a number of miles to be

baptized by John (Mt. 3:13). He insisted upon being baptized (Mt. 3:15). He said he must be baptized “to fulfill all righteousness” (Mt. 3:15). Similarly, we are baptized in order:

o To enter into a sacred relationship with the Godhead (Matthew 28:18-20).

o To be saved (Mark 16:15-16; 1 Peter 3:21).

o To have our sins remitted (Acts 2:38).

o To have our sins washed away (Acts 22:16).

o To obey the commands of the Lord (Acts 10:47-48).

o To enter the benefits of the death of Christ (Romans 6:3), to enter the body of our Lord (1 Cor. 12:13), to become a child of God and to enter Christ (Galatians 3:26,27).

2

• Upon being baptized, we receive the Spirit (Matt 3:16; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22; John 1:33). Upon our baptism into Christ for the remission of sins, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). It is not to be confused with the baptism of the HS, nor the miraculous measure of the HS. Rather, the gift of the HS in Acts 2:38 is received by all penitents who are baptized for the remission of sins.

• Upon being baptized, we too, will be acknowledged as God’s son or daughter (Mt. 3:17; Mk 1:11). Upon our baptism, the culminating act in the new birth (John 3:3,5), we, too, can be rightfully acknowledged as sons of God. (See Galatians 3:26, 27 and 2 Cor. 6:17-18).

• The entire Godhead is involved in baptism (Mt. 3:16-17). We are baptized into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (Mt. 28:19). God becomes our Father (Galatians 3:26-4:6), Christ becomes our elder brother (Romans 8:17; Hebrews 2:12) and the Holy Spirit comes to indwell in our hearts (Galatians 4:6).

Jesus said that he must be baptized in order to

“fulfill all righteousness.” The

importance of our being baptized cannot be overly emphasized!
