Needless to say, registration for September is extremely healthy and enquiries continue to be made on a daily basis. I would like to take this opportunity to wish our Rugby coach and PE assistant, Biko Adema, all the very best next week as he represents Kenya in the Rugby 7s matches that will be taking place in the UK. For interested pupils or parents I am sure many matches will be televised. Biko will be playing in Glasgow on 9 th and 10 th May and at Twickenham on 16 th and 17 th as Fly Half. BOARDING AT THE BANDA

It has been a short but busy week in the boarding house. On Monday we did some sewing. It is the continuation of a project which will hopefully end up as something nice for the boarding house living room. Tuesday was karaoke night, everyone really enjoyed performing their favourite songs. There were lots of giggles as you can see from the photos. On Wednesday was our creative night, we did some doodle art to frame as decoration in the dining room.

Keeping Children Safe on

the Internet

DID YOU KNOW… that the following age restrictions are in place for these different forms of social media?

Open Morning

The open morning was a success, with all pupils and staff having put their best foot forward to make the school very pleasant for prospective parents to visit. The school hall was creatively laid out by Mrs. Hodson with art work, the center-piece being the portfolios of the Year 8 Art Scholars; Ethan Phillips (Stowe), Elsa Marrian (Hillcrest) and Lily Carroll (Royal Hospital School). There was a lavish buffet of delicious hors d'oeuvre prepared and displayed ever so beautifully by Mala. Despite the rain, the teachers and prefects who helped to do the show rounds remained cheerful and enthusiastic and at the end of their visit, all our guests expressed their delight at being in such a warm and happy school.

KENTON WARM-UP CROSS COUNTRY

Kenton Cross-Country Warm-Up took place yesterday. Sixty children from Year 3 to 8 participated in the 3 - 4km race against the best runners in the Nairobi area. The course had been changed numerous times due to bad weather which made keeping track of the runners difficult but the children performed above and beyond their potential. The majority of runners train twice a week throughout the year so it was superb to see them enjoy the fruits of their endeavours.

Notable top 10 finishes are below: U9 Girls : Jessica Viljoen (4th), Keza Sitati (5th), U9 Boys : Troy Jacobs (5th), U11 Girls : Tyler Jacobs (1st), Akira Thorpe (2nd), Amy Grammaticas (4th), Issy Jones (9th), Nelia Egger (10th) U11 Boys : JJ Sitati (1st) U13 Girls : Emily McLean (2nd), Bianca Miller (7th), Sarah de la Harpe (9th) U13 Boys : Oscar King (3rd), Jared Staley (6th)

Overall: We won the U9 Girls and U11 Girls Categories. The Banda finished 2nd overall.

The team sheet for The IAPS Cross-Country Championships being held at St. Andrews', Turi, went on the board today. There will undoubtedly be some disappointments but it is a testament to all of our athletes that the standard of running and competition for places is so high. Keep up the hard work!

Well done to all those who took part in The Warm-Up and congratulations to all those who have been selected to represent The Banda in the IAPS Championships next Saturday. Matt Dams

Hillcrest riding Competition Sunday 28th June

The Banda Senior School News

'Pan Africa' by Hillcrest Secondary Year 8 were treated to a production by Hillcrest Secondary students on Wednesday. They came to The Banda with their performance of 'Pan Africa' which they had devised themselves. It was an extremely polished and varied production, at times very funny and at times bringing us close to tears. It was great to see such strong performances from some of our ex-Banda pupils.

The Banda Junior School News

Open Morning

I was extremely proud of the warm welcome extended to all of our visitors to the Junior School on Tuesday. Our children chatted to them about their activities and were polite and mature in the way that they responded to questions. The classrooms were busy and beautifully decorated, so thank you Years 2, 3 and 4. Anne Fidelo

Our Year 3’s could not reach Kitengela Glass by bus this week due to our abundant rainfall in Nairobi, so their teachers have planned a day of fun in connection with their topic about India for later in the term to make up for the disappointment.

The Banda School Pegasus News

CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS WEEK’S WINNERS

OF ‘STAR OF THE WEEK’

Den Day

Thursday 7th May will be the Pre-Prep Den Day. This will be a charity mufti day where the children donate a minimum of 100 shillings to build dens. Please see the letter emailed out on Wednesday for further details. Many thanks S. Hamer

With the wet weather this term please ensure your children have rain coats and indoor shoes in school at all times. Many thanks.

2SA

The children in 2SA have been learning about Materials in Science this term. They had great fun creating picture collages using different types of materials that are found around the home and school. We also enjoyed parti-tioning numbers and did lots of whiteboard work this week. They talked about our value for this term which is Responsibility, and thought up different ways of being responsible at home and at school. Suzie Andrade

Some art work from the Nursery this week

Phonics

Year 1: Recap of last term’s sounds and phonics assessments. Reception: all the phase 2 and 3 sounds. We are focusing this term on reading and using the phase three sounds when reading words. Please can we request that you also to do the same at home in order to encourage the children to recognise the combination sounds in words more confidently.

Environment Week Update

I’m not sure if you’ve had a chance to see the fantastic sculptures hanging in our Pegasus Pre-Prep hall. They are the sea creatures that Year 1, Reception and Nursery produced during Environment week, under the expert guidance of the guys from Ocean Sole. Julie Church very kindly brought her team in to help us construct these. We had already made the papier mache animals and the children had a great time adding on the used flip flops. Thanks to all involved.
