I was recently asked to share my perspective on Ballito for a well-known, well-read Sunday newspaper. It was an honour and I was humbled that they used what I wrote in an article called Spotlight on Ballito. When I was asked, I thought that it would be difficult, but it isn’t hard to write about a place that you love and that is your home. The words that I wrote were heartfelt and embody how we feel about this town. They explain why we launched the Best of the Best campaign and why we feel that there is a new wave of growth happening, all of it covered right here in this edition. Here are my reasons for loving our town — what would you write if you were asked?

Life in Ballito is different. I know that many people say this, but our town seems to have the right mix of “things” to make it a place that you fall in love with but that are hard to give reasons for. There is heritage and legacy here with the old farming families who, having been here on the coast for so long, provide a feeling of longstanding tradition along with a sense of established presence and community,. Business is growing year on year — not corporate business but more entrepreneurial, which means that business-owners cut through the “politics” and work hard to make ends meet. Locals

support each other and there is still a climate of old-school values in what is a modern and progressive town that seems to be coming out of that awkward “teenage” phase and thriving.

Lifestyle-wise, it offers everything that you could want for a family — quality time instead of time stuck in traffic, familiar faces to greet you at the shops, and kindred spirits that support each other. All of this, plus the obvious beauty of the place, makes it extremely attractive. Community living in most places is safe and secure; we walk in the streets and do all those things that people in city suburbs can now only dream of. Ballito is somehow able to keep us connected to the real world, but it shelters us from some of its ugliness and frenetic pace. That’s what attracts me to raising my family here — time is limited and I want as much time with them as I can get. Ballito gives me that.

Ten years ago the town was small and as a community we had to support each other to survive. That ethos has remained and we’ve gone from being parents of kids that always came last in sporting events to being boldly proud that our Ballito kids can compete with the best out there and win. We celebrate our wins in Ballito (and, yes, we gripe about the bad stuff) but overall our mind-set is one of collective positivity and that we as a community can

overcome pretty much most challenges thrown at us. Look at what we’ve accomplished in such a short time and you know that it could only happen within a strong community.

Ballito remains extremely loyal. We honour and respect those that have worked hard and invested in the area to try to make a living or grow a business and this is testament to the fact that Ballito people work hard. There is a misconception that, because we’re coastal, we’re laid-back and not driven or motivated. That’s not true — we’re as hard-working as anyone out there. There are still lots of opportunities for growth on the North Coast. We’re seeing the start of a second wave in the area that has used the foundation of previous growth as a platform and, as many of us here say, the best is yet to come.

Enjoy this edition and, until we meet again,

God Bless

After leaving his morning radio show at the country’s biggest radio station over a year ago, Gareth Cliff went out and started his own station called Cliff Central. The concept of listening to online radio in South Africa was still in its infancy. Now 18 months later the team has launched their first iOS & Android apps, called CliffCentral. The app is pretty simple in terms of functionality, but it allows you to listen to live streaming of the shows, as well as catchup on the podcasts of each show that has been aired. This makes it simple to listen to, on the go at your convenience.

APPTASTIC There seems to be a new wave of apps hitting the world at the moment, all seemingly making our lives a lot easier in the digital world around us. In this edition, we take a look at three awesome apps making waves in South Africa

Zomato

Wumdrop

Ever been on the hunt for the perfect restaurant in an area you aren’t familiar with? Or looking for a specific cuisine and don’t know where to find it? Enter Zomato…Zomato is your one stop app for all things food, allowing you search for restaurants in specific areas. You also have the ability to rate and review the restaurant as well as read previous reviews to see how other people have rated it. You can also bookmark places you have found to re-visit later.

Recently crowned as the South African App of the year 2015, Wumdrop is your Uber for deliveries. The service

allows you to select pick up and drop off points and within a few minutes, a driver will arrive to collect your

package and deliver it. You then are automatically charged according to the distance of the delivery. The

app is solely developed in South Africa, and is only currently available in Jo’burg and Cape Town, but Durban

(and surrounds) is on the cards very soon!

mY town

I’m a local lad born and bred and am passionate about the area’s heritage, people and potential. I’m a director at Seeff Properties and love my job. I’ve spent time away from home, but the only place I could think of to raise a family is right here. I live for my two special boys and gorgeous wife, and I believe that to be truly successful in business and life you have to put others first.

favourite place to relax when the weather is good? At home digging for worms and fishing with the kids.

What is your favourite restaurant to eat brunch at, in Ballito? Sage or La Piazza. I can’t resist an Eggs Benedict!

What do you see as Ballito’s hidden gem? Its rich heritage. We have over 150 years of stories and people who have shaped the area.

favourite weekend activity? Heading to one of our many nearby game reserves.

Best place to grab a relaxing cup of coffee? Science of Coffee in Palm Lakes. It’s quiet and the single origin beans from Africa are superb.

My Town is a celebration of local people who live and breathe Ballito everyday. They share with us their

favourites places to go, things to do and ways to spend their time - it’s all about them. In each edition

Ballito is their town and they love it!

You attract who you are - not who you want.

John Maxwell

Ouch … let that sink in for just a moment. It’s one of the basic principles of leadership, and it’s one

that I continue going back to because it sets up the rest. You’ve heard the saying, “birds of a feather stick together,” right. Well this is true in leadership, too. You attract who you are - not who you want.

So take a look around you. Are you inspired by who you see, and do their characters line up with where you are wanting to go…or does it cause you to ask questions about where you’re headed? You see, often we’ll make statements like: “show me your friends and I’ll show you your future,” but the truth is we attract these friends. The lives we live attract the people who surround us.

INSPIRATION

WORDS TESSA JAHNIG | WEB WWW.LINCCHURCH.COM

Be ThaT Person

WORDS DYLAN JAHNIG | WEB WWW.LINCCHURCH.COM

DYLAN JAHNIG IS A HUSBAND, FATHER AND LEAD PASTOR AT LINC CHURCH. HE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT GOD, LIFE AND BALLITO

Said plainly - the future is in your hands. This is a pretty sobering thought because, if it’s true, which I believe it is, then more time and effort should be spent working on ourselves and less time on others.

If it’s true that you attract who you are, then these are the kinda questions you should be asking;

Are you becoming the kind of person you ultimately desire to do life with?

Do you embrace personally the character traits of the kinds of people you wish to one day surround your life with?

Are you generous? Because this will attract generous friends.

Are you consistent? Because before you know it this will be the type of individual who chooses to do life with you.

Are you kind and encouraging with your words?

Because this will become the type of friends you attract. The list goes on…

So ask yourself today; Who would I like to attract? What do they look like? How do they speak and act toward me?Then become that person.

Here’s what I know about you. There’s more in you than you think there is. There’s more courage than there is complacency. There’s more hope than there is despair… not because of your own efforts, but because of a loving God who has packed you with His potential, and set you up for success by sending His son to set you free from everything you aren’t, and by His Spirit living in you.

So trust Jesus today, let His words shape your life, and as this happens you’ll be amazed at who you attract and the kind of leader you’ll become.

You were born for something great.

Colossians 1:27 (MSG)This mystery has been kept in the dark for a long time, but now it’s out in the open. God wanted everyone, not just Jews, to know this rich and glorious secret inside and out, regardless of their background, regardless of their religious standing. The mystery in a nutshell is just this: Christ is in you, the hope of glory.

Be inspired.

ride to the shops – there are none available.

16 | w w w. T h e B a l l i T o m a g a z i n e . c o. z a

The TVR speed 12 was built for performance, but ended up having such a powerful engine that its

owner deemed it ‘undrive-able’. Well, alright then.

The Lamborghini Veneno (Italian for ‘venom’) is the world’s most expensive

production supercar, available for sale at a cool $4,5m. Anyone? Going

once? Twice?

The Ford GT’s roof is nicknamed ‘Hulk’ roof for good reason, it seems. The car is so strong that during the regulation ‘roof crush’ test, it broke the crushing machine. Goodness!

Some might be pleasantly surprised to hear that Volkswagen are veritable supercar kings – they own Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Audi, Ducati and Porsche. How’s that for a rap sheet?

While we moan about the fluctuating petrol prices, spare a thought for those (if there are any) who own a limited edition

Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat – its fuel injectors could drain an Olympic sized

swimming pool in 361 days.

Ferruccio Lamborghini (no prizes for guessing who he is) started a tractor and farm implement

business after WW11. A gifted mechanical engineer, he took his Ferrari apart to investigate

why his clutch kept failing. He improved the design and created an enemy out of Enzo Ferrari

– the rest is history.

The first Dodge Vipers for production had no windows, no exterior door handles or anti-lock

brakes. Okay. Moving on.

The Lamborghini Gallardo and Audi R8 are actually cousins. They cars share the same chassis and interior

layout, only displaying cosmetic differences.

A group of children was once asked what they thought love was; how they would know when they have found a special person. Ten-year-old Weston Twardowski said: “when they stand out like a strawberry in a bowl of peas.” For Xolani and Yoliswa Gumede, the powerful couple behind Ballito-based strawberry farm Cappeny Estates, this is a delightfully apt sentiment. We chatted to the Gumedes about life, love and strawberries.

BUSINESS

in marketing and public relations, the goal was always to go into business together. They bought a service station in Waterfall, the second biggest in KwaZulu-Natal. “It was natural for me, as my parents had had a service station in Benoni. I had experience,” said Xolani. The opportunity to develop a piece of land in Ballito, near the Collisheen Estate, came up in 2010. Up for the challenge, the Gumedes started researching options for development: agricultural, residential and commercial. Agriculture emerged as the most viable choice, Xolani tells us. “The research deepened; we needed to ascertain what crop would be best suited for intensive agriculture.”

After poring through several crops, including roses, they settled on strawberries. It is now a widely known fact that they were

advised against planting the succulent fruit in Ballito. But their research showed no reason why strawberries would not grow on the North Coast. “There are around 800 variations of strawberries and we have selected the best ones for our region. We are continously researching different variety during each planting season. Why wouldn’t the strawberries grow here, unless they have something personal against Ballito?” Xolani says, which makes Yoliswa chuckle. She says the first year was one of learning, making mistakes and developing strategies. “We faltered many times, but everything was a lesson. The mistakes we made were common to first generation farmers like ourselves.”

Seeing their strawberries, packed and labelled, on the shelves at Food Lovers Market in Ballito for the first time, made Yoliswa emotional. “It was a mix of emotions: happiness, pride, relief. And I get that feeling every time I walk into a store and see our product.” As they head into phase two, Yoliswa says they are especially grateful for the support they have received thus far. With partners like Tourism and Investment KZN, local business, surrounding farmers and the people of Ballito, the journey has been made easier. “If your dream doesn’t scare you, then it’s not big enough,” says Xolani. “You have to have a strong will, or you won’t get past the first month. We didn’t have any frames of reference so we faced many unknowns, but it’s been such a journey.” The Gumedes are dreamers, and their plans for Cappeny are only just getting off the ground. Yoliswa shared some of their ideas with us, beginning with their first strawberry picking festival on September 26. Further down the line, they plan to establish retail at the farm. “We want it to be an experience to visit us at Cappeny,” Yoliswa smiles. “The picking element is just a part of what we want to offer. Cappeny is going to become a destination.”

Working together might be a challenge for some couples but Yoliswa and Xolani make it work. They spend most of their time at the

LEFT Xolani in the chill room with a crate of packaged strawberries, ready to be shipped out

Some couples are just meant for each other; they just fit – it’s evident in the way they relate to each other, finish each other’s sentences and laugh at

the same things. As we begin the interview, that’s the first thing I notice about Xolani and Yoliswa…that, and the undeniable warmth they exude. “I met Xolani in Hillbrow, in 1992,” Yoliswa, whose parents are South African, was born in Lesotho. “We were studying in Johan-nesburg at the time,” she adds. “He followed me to a phone booth and introduced himself.” Xolani smiles at Yoliswa and admits that it was love at first sight. The couple was married on December 25, 1998 and had their first child, a son they called Melusi, in 2000.

For Xolani, who has a background in project management and consultancy and Yoliswa,

farm or at their Sunningdale home; they plan to move to Ballito soon, though. “Ah, we love it here,” enthuses Xolani. “We can’t wait to move up. Aside from the weather and just how beautiful is, I love the strong sense of community. We cannot believe how readily we have been embraced.” Work, Yoliswa admits, is all-consuming. “Sometimes, we’ll get home and say we aren’t going to talk about work for an hour. But then, after about fifteen minutes one of us will ask the other if the hour is over yet!”

The couple enjoys spending time with their children, now fifteen-year-old Melusi and their daughter Neo (13) when they are home from boarding school. “Or, we drive up to visit them,” Xolani says. “If we aren’t doing that, we like to go out for a movie.” Yoliswa shakes her

head with a chuckle and interrupts: “or we’re sleeping!” They are passionate about their family life; Melusi, Xolani shares, was actually the brains behind the name ‘Cappeny’. “He must have been about seven or eight years old when he randomly told us, if he ever started a business, it would be a surf shop and he would call it John Cappeny. Of course, we asked where on earth he had heard that name; he told us he just liked it.” Xolani did some digging and found out the Cappenys were actually farming magnates in the 1600s. “He knew what he was talking about, then,” Yoliswa laughs.

A couple like Yoliswa and Xolani reminds the world that love still exists and…that life can be rather sweet. Here’s to the strawberry farm, and making dreams come true!

Spring is here! That means we can pack away the hot chocolate, cocoa, huge coffee mugs and whipped cream. And, in with the fruit juices, ice blocks and spritzers! For those of us watching our figures, however, a glass of water seems about the safest option. But why should it have to be just plain water? Chopping up pieces of fresh fruit is both healthy, nutritious and delicious. The amazing range at @ Home includes these amazing fruit infuser jugs. You can fill the jug with chilled, or room temperature water and then fill the filter up with pieces of fruit.

inspiring service excellenceIf you look up the definition of the word ‘best’, you should find something

along the lines of: ‘of the most desirable type or quality’ or maybe ‘that which is the most excellent, outstanding or desirable’. It is quite a tall order to be

recognised as the best; but to earn the title of ‘Best of the Best’ is no easy feat. Through our inaugural Readers’ Choice Awards, we sought to unearth the

cream of Ballito service.

Perhaps FabMags CEO and editor of The Ballito Magazine, Justin Scott, put it best: “we need a reason to celebrate…

to be positive, to focus on what can make us better as a community and we need to be open and receptive to stitching that type of positive mindset into our everyday lives.” This notion was the premise for the Best of the Best Awards – a campaign designed to highlight the absolute best in service and business on the North Coast. The campaign, which kicked off earlier this year, represented a vision FabMags has for a community that chooses to focus on the positive, rather than the negative. “For the past nine years we have published stories that celebrate life, people and events around us. We have been invited into homes, offices, business, restaurants and all sorts of places in between and every

single one of those invites have been because people have wanted us to share their stories. Our challenge hasn’t been to find good news stories….it’s been fitting them in edition after edition.”

The competition process was rather simple: businesses were nominated in any one of 10 pre-determined categories: active lifestyle, arts and culture, body and soul, dining, hotels and destinations, kids and family, nightlife and entertainment, property, services and shopping. Once nominated, it was up to businesses to rally support; votes were channelled through the Ballito Magazine website, with one unique vote allowed per person, per day. An impressive 164 businesses were nominated this year, from as far north as Zinkwazi, Stanger and

Shakashead all the way back to Ballito. When the competition ended on August 31, we had amassed more than 12 500 votes – some coming from the United Kingdom and United States of America. “The main criteria was simple, businesses were voted for and voting audits more stringent than what the IEC use were implemented. A final judging round was held where votes, competition ethics and business standing were considered along with the votes. When all was said and done, voting by readers was what counted,” said Justin.

The support for the competition blew us away; here at FabMags headquarters, we watched how businesses compete with each other on social media, getting the community behind them. Bright yellow posters dotted walls over Ballito and, for a while, it seemed the Best of the Best Competition dominated conversation at most coffee shops. “There is a desire for excellence,” Justin says. “Excellence is a consistent, premium service at every touch point set by a service oriented tone that drives your company at every level.”

The competition culminated in a glitzy awards evening at the swanky Fairmont Hotel in Zimbali. And what an evening it was: winners, sponsors and businesspeople got to mingle with each other and the FabMags team, just reflecting on the first competition and how it brought the community together. On the night, several recognition awards were also given out to individuals, organisations and businesses we felt made a significant impact on the community…some even in the simplest of ways. Dladla, the security guard outside Alberlito Hospital who waves unfailingly at every motorist who passes him in the mornings, rain or shine. Rajesh, who always has time for a smile and a chat when you fill your tank at Engen Garage. The Specialised Rescue Unit, led by commander Quentin Power, who are first on the scene for everything from a trapped whale, to a gruesome accident…to a person locked out of their apartment.

Curro Mt Richmore, which scooped the Kids and Family award, was surprised and honoured at their win. “Just being

Richards Bay Empangeni Ballitonominated was a big honour for us. We feel that this is about so much more than awards being handed out. These awards highlighted all the good and positive things that is happening in our community. We have so much in this country and town to be positive about and this event is proof of that.” Similar sentiments were shared by Moira Manson of Café Barber, who won the Body and Soul category: “I am honoured and overwhelmed…it's amazing to think how much our clients and the families of Ballito support us. A huge thank you to everyone who voted for Cafe Barber; without them this would never have been possible. And thank you to FabMags – it was amazing how you put it together. We loved every minute of it.” Singh’s Mutton Market had one of the best marketing strategies throughout the competition: Facebook posts and asking every single customer to vote went a long way to securing their win in the shopping category. “I wish there were more competitions like this. We have been receiving compliments from out of towners, some even from overseas, telling us how proud they are of us. The competition gave

us an amazing platform to showcase our business and we are so grateful!”

Now that the dust is settled, we look to the future. As FabMags, we are proud to have launched this initiative and to have worked with partners who shared our vision. As we plan for the 2016 edition, we are reminded of why we celebrate the Best of the Best: “It is a reason to celebrate, to be positive and to focus on what can make us better as a community, this year, next year and for the years to come.”

Hidden within the hills of Ballito, just visible from the N2, is the treasure trove that is The Quarter. This quaint shopping centre is a

destination that speaks to the quieter side of Ballito, the side devoid of rushing and noise. With its sleek, contemporary architecture and simple layout, The Quarter is both easy to navigate and a joy to browse. It is one of few centres on the North Coast to exclusively house unique, owner-run stores – predominantly locals. On each of the two levels you will find an exciting selection of services, coupled with efficient service from each friendly business owner.

Its architecture is of specific importance – it was built using the unique Tilt-Up construction method, which sees walls being poured directly on site into large slabs of concrete called tilt-up panels. The panels are then raised into position around the building’s perimeter, forming the exterior walls. In and around The Quarter, you will spot a unique sculpture and art pieces breathing life into the centre. The sculpture is the work of Brendon Edwards, who uses materials like steel, plants, trees, concrete, canvas, copper, stone, water, wood, brick,

light, darkness…or a combination.

The Quarter could be described as the perfect

The Ballito Magazine recently took a weekend off to go back and visit our old stomping grounds in Centurion. Whenever we look for a

hotel there, the Forever Hotel always comes to mind as the Centurion area is such a lovely part of Pretoria and is perfectly positioned whether you want to travel to Pretoria North or into Johannesburg.

The hotel, with its beautiful French-Italian-styled look, has always appealed to us and its beautiful, inviting and spacious garden is an added bonus - so we decided that we just had to stay there.

We booked into the Forever Hotel late on a Friday evening after a fun but long family road trip from Ballito. The staff were really friendly and welcoming and we were booked into our rooms in no time at all, ready to have a good night’s sleep before our busy weekend. We were impressed that the hotel can accommodate up to three or four to a room (four in the family suite, consisting of two bedrooms) which makes business or family travel easy if you stay at the hotel. The rooms are beautifully decorated and, with luxurious bedding, a TV and a tea/coffee station, certainly cover all your needs.

Breakfast the next morning was fabulous, with friendly and accommodating waitresses on hand our special orders were well handled and we left the hotel well -rested, fed and ready for the day ahead. We had a lovely day out, taking a drive down memory lane (we lived in Centurion for 10 years) and then we stopped off at the Irene Mall for a spot of shopping before going over to the Irene Dairy, where we had the most beautiful lunch and photo session. We head back to the hotel to change, with a quick stop at Centurion Mall, where we grabbed the necessary goodies for our evening’s catch-up with old friends. Some how we never felt far from the hotel and there really are so many ways to get there - it’s perfectly positioned.

Service excellence is their motto and the staff don’tjust pay lip service to it - they deliver the real thing. We were thoroughly impressed with the staff, from security and the front gate to restaurant waiters and those on duty at the 24 hour front desk, all of whom,

regardless of the time of day that we left or arrived, were friendly, professional and helpful — all big ticks in my book.

We loved the fact that the hotel is central to everything, with all the main highways, plus opportunities for shopping and relaxing, all on your doorstep. The hotel itself provides for all your basic needs and more and we were truly happy with everything about the hotel. We will definitely stay there again on our next trip back to Pretoria.

BusIness ON tHe BLOcKThe face of Ballito, as we know it, is rapidly changing. Increasing development means that new businesses

are cropping up all the time; while the more established businesses are flourishing. In this new regular feature, we will profile some of those newer businesses to find out how they are loving Ballito and chat to the older business about staying power; we’ll also hear some quirks from the owners! In this edition, we

chat to Live Print and The One Percent.

The world would call them marketing strategy experts. Their clients, humble strategic marketing consultants…and they call themselves “a freethinking marketing unicorn – rainbows, glitter and all!” Taryn Levine of The One Percent, a newly established marketing company, calls it “magic marketing”. “We don’t offer everything under the sun because that’s when things end up being just ‘good enough’ and we won’t settle for anything less than exceptional. “Everything we do revolves around one simple question: ‘will this solve the marketing problem or not?’ No politics, hidden agenda or financial bias.” Taryn’s number rule for success comes from the same place as the business’ name: “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration” – Thomas Edison. I believe that a great idea is nothing without hard work and perseverance.” Ballito has been incredibly supportive, something Taryn thanks her lucky stars for daily. “Ballito people want to see you succeed, and they’re willing to help you get there. I love that! It really is a beautiful city full of untapped potential with many small businesses and their commodities on the verge of becoming profitable brands. I would love to see The One Percent making an even bigger imprint on the marketing world; helping more and more small businesses (and even larger ones) make the most out of their operations with as little spend as possible.” And, at the end of every day she says it’s all about the happy place: “happy clients make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside!”

THE one percent

Dynamic, friendly and helpful: that’s how Ryan Smith describes the staff at LivePRINT – a print shop at Tiffany’s Shopping Centre specialising in high quality printing. Anything from custom canvas, business cards, flyers, magazines, stickers, posters and finishing services like binding and laminating – they do it all. “We have been going for just over four months now,” says Ryan. “We wanted to offer a fresh and unique printing experience to customers in the area along with high quality print products. We have a table and chairs where our customers can work while waiting for their prints and there is also free WiFi on offer!” Ryan says LivePRINT’s uniqueness lies in their mandate: “we strive to always go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. Our rule for success is consistency and excellence.” For Ryan, every day starts with a cup of coffee, after which he plans “how to take over the world”. When business is done for the day, he chats to his staff, thanking him for their hard work and discussing areas where they could improve. Doing business in Ballito is ‘fantastic,’ he says: “It really is a community of people as opposed to a big city where you just feel like another random person. We are always looking at delivering high quality print products and will always strive to ensure our machines and staff are at the highest levels possible. So, our goal is to be the best digital print house on the North Coast.” And, one quirky fact about his business? “We have a yellow giraffe that sits on top of our digital press watching the passers-by.”

The face of the North Coast is changing. At least once a month, we hear of a new development cropping up – each one singing the benefits of living and playing in and around Ballito. The new property wave is frothing on the North Coast. In this edition, we chatted to a few developers riding the wave; getting the inside scoop on some of the projects about to hit our shores.

ROAD TRIP

With our postcard-perfect beaches, absurdly amazing weather and chic, urban lifestyle sprinkled with country

charm the North Coast is – arguably – one of the better places to live. And it isn’t just us who know that. Judging by the rapid growth of our area, the idea of life on the North Coast is undoubtedly appealing. “Even if people cannot live here permanently, they still want a piece of that sun-kissed lifestyle,” says developer Joa Morais, of Wood Owl Investments. This formed the foundation for discussions on Cascades Hotel, a stunning development earmarked for the prestigious Simbithi Eco Estate. Cascades was conceptualised in 2013 and, after a delay in land transfer, is finally underway. But it isn’t just a hotel, says Joa – it’s an investment opportunity. The sea-facing location, overlooking the renowned Simbithi Golf Course and adjacent to the Country Club and new Simbithi Office Park, is enviable. “It’s going to be a hotel completely different to anything we have seen on the North Coast,” Joa promises. Artist impressions depict vast, open spaces, glass walls, water features, lush plants and natural stone. The hotel will boast a restaurant, spa and cocktail lounge. “The golf facilities at Simbithi are of an excellent standard,

as is the experience at the Fig Tree restaurant. We are working closely with Simbithi,” says Joa. The hotel will house single rooms, two and three-bedroom apartments for groups or families and two exclusive penthouse suites. There will also be opportunities for buyers to invest in sectional titles within the hotel. Developers are currently in talks with a reputable operator, with extensive management experience. “It’s going to be world class.”

The Simbithi Eco Estate is a prime location on the North Coast, something Jacana at Simbithi – a 74-unit development – aims to capitalise on. The first phase of the development, by the JR Property Group, is scheduled for completion by late 2016. Sales and marketing manager, Sean Newton told us more about what they are calling “arguably the best unit development” on Simbithi, which also happens to be the estate’s final development. “Jacana offers a rare and exceptional opportunity for discerning investors to stake a claim on this upmarket and sought after address within the Golf Course phases of Simbithi Eco Estate.” Launched in July, the first phase comprises 38 units including 24 simplex apartments, eight duplex apartments and six free-standing villas. “Jacana offers

two, three, four and five bedroom units, thus satisfying demand within a broad spectrum of the residential market here on the Dolphin Coast,” says Sean. “The architectural style and design ensures maximum privacy with intention to blend into the natural surroundings and general look and feel of the estate as a whole. Living life to the full in a serene and secure community environment is what Jacana At Simbithi is all about.”

This next wave of development seems to favour a younger generation of buyers, first time homeowners who are either corporate singletons or new families looking to settle down. Loxley Estate, nestled in the quiet pocket of Sheffield Beach, is one of the forerunners in this class of development: exclusive, boutique living that aids a sophisticated lifestyle. Developer James Hesse, whose company’s experience spans three decades and whose portfolio boasts Dunkirk Estate in Salt Rock, tells us Loxley is smaller than most estates: only 27 freehold sites, of which 22 are already sold. “We sensed a gap in the market for high end homes, within an intimate, quiet environment. There’s a crop of buyers in their late thirties, early forties, who are migrating north.” Full-scale construction on Loxley will begin in October. Loxley’s location, close to the unspoiled Sheffield Beach, adds an element of seaside life. “It’s quaint, small and exclusive…not everyone wants to live in a big estate.” James feels strongly about this, and

future waves, of development on the North Coast. “Previously, the focus when choosing somewhere to live was business first, then family. It is now the other way around, and that’s why this area is booming. Ballito, and the North Coast, offers an attractive lifestyle, especially for up and coming families looking to establish themselves. I think the trend will continue for the foreseeable future.” The Loop, a three-phase project by Painted Black, is another such development. Situated west of the N2 on Lee Barns Boulevard, the precinct seeks to offer an exceptional combination of residential, retail and retirement options.

Developer, John Slater, tells us how the agricultural farm, originally owned by the Hullet family, was purchased in 2007 and underwent relevant rezoning processes. “The first phase was sub-divided and developed into an industrial park, which was sold out and properties transferred by 2010. The remainder of the land was zoned for residential and commercial use, and in 2013 was conceptualised to form a contemporary lifestyle precinct called ‘The Loop’, with ground being broken shortly thereafter to start the services and infrastructure. We look forward to launching the various developments within The Loop from the end of November.” Developments within the lifestyle precinct include Brooklyn, an exclusive and modern residential village comprising 41

three and four-bedroom freestanding homes, a communal clubhouse area and swimming pool; a mixed-use development comprising 180 one and two-bedroom apartments, a boutique retail offering of 6000m² of leasable space, as well as 250 storage units; and finally Hemingways - a retirement village - which is set to house an assortment of 120 residential offerings that include freestanding units, assisted living apartments and a frail care facility. John says the concept of ‘The Loop’ was to be able to offer something for everybody. Testament to the demand of the product is the fact that five units of developers’ stock has already been pre-sold in Brooklyn. He says that their project is unique in that they are creating a lifestyle village, by offering property solutions for whichever stage of life you are in. “Not only can you work and shop on your doorstep, but living in ‘The Loop’ will also give one a real sense of community. With the consistent movement of properties in the greater Ballito area, we are extremely confident about the success of The Loop. While still keeping its charm of being a relaxed seaside town, it will be nice to see more of a balance between residential and commercial offerings and services in the near future.”

The market also favours the buyer looking for that extra bit of luxury and indulgence.

With a tag line like ‘Live. Work. Shop’, the Zimbali Wedge oozes the very essence of life on the North Coast. Developed by award winning company Extra Dimensions, the Wedge is best described as an oasis of residential luxury infused with glamour and professionalism. The development encompasses retail, commercial and residential property; the latter was sold out within two days of the launch – 78 units valued at R160 million. Its situation on the border of the Zimbali Coastal Resort only adds to its decadence. That, and promises of a private porte-cochere service for residents, contemporary architecture with acute attention to detail and spectacular

views, popular restaurants, boutiques and speciality food shops, fitness & yoga facilities and service office suites just an elevator ride away. The Toweel brothers believe the Wedge triggered a niche in the property market, creating a village destination satisfying both local and international demands. “This gives us great excitement and security moving forward, knowing the interest behind the Zimbali Wedge has become a reality.”The development trend continues even farther up North, dipping into the historic area of Tinley Manor: a gem tucked away in the pockets of the N2. Often, with the rapid pace at which developments crop up in an area, families begin to

yearn for a quieter, carefree lifestyle. Gated estates tend to offer such: a tranquil environment where amenities are close by and children can have the same open-spaced, carefree children their parents may have had. This is where Palm Lakes fits snugly. “We are not selling homes, we are selling a lifestyle,” says Olivia Roels-Sak, of developers Royal Palm Property Holdings. Since breaking ground in 2005 the estate has flourished and now includes private school Trinityhouse, Prestige Baby Academy, two clubhouses, two swimming pools, the popular Science of Coffee Shop and a retirement village, which is selling fast. “We have a nurse from Aldhem Healthcare on site at all times, assisting residents daily. There are 15 finished homes in the retirement village, 15 finished sectional titles and 20 under construction.” On the whole, there are 190 completed homes in Palm Lakes, 244 completed apartments, 30 townhouses, 120 homes under construction and 70 plans under review. The estate is set to launch a new development, called Impala Ridge. Olivia mentioned that RPPH still owns land on the other side of the R102, adjacent to the N2, and on the other side of the N2. “This land will also be developed during the coming years.”

The development trend is perhaps best summarised by Morais, who has long predicted the boom. “We saw this coming with the relocation of King Shaka Airport; now is the time to grab hold of the development wave. Dramatic changes have been made in our infrastructure, an example of which is our new interchange. It is up to as a community to welcome new development, and as developers, to hold hands along the North Coast to form a cohesive chain of growth. He believes that, within the next two or three decades, the North Coast will be on par with Cape Town. “Or, at least the next best thing!”

The first word that popped into my head when I walked into Loaf Café was ‘fresh’. And it’s not difficult to

see why, with its clean, contemporary décor – white, with a few delicious pops of colour. Gina Rattray is all smiles when we arrive, seating us and getting our drinks orders to the kitchen promptly. Her lovely mum, Theresa, pops out of the kitchen a few minutes later bearing a tray of freshly baked cinnamon rolls; their aroma swirled dizzily around us, reminding me of pinching treats while my grandmother was baking!

The atmosphere at Loaf is sublime. You can pick a table outside and bask in the glorious Ballito sunlight, or sit inside and catch smiles from shoppers who walk by. Either way, the experience is a winner. With all the tempting scents wafting over from the kitchen, we got hungry quickly. We had a choice between several dishes on the specials board, but there is also a simple menu if you’re looking for a smaller meal. We had a table of four, so everyone tried something different: I went for the mushroom pasta, which was absolutely gorgeous. The tagliatelle pasta was perfect, and the creamy sauce was well-complemented by a side of pesto. Lucille tried the lamb burger, served with wedges, tomato relish and homemade mayo. The patty was unlike any other we’ve tasted and the wedges were pillows of crispy goodness…amazing! Simi chose the chili prawn hot pot – this was just gorgeous. The prawns were whirling in

a spicy tomato, coconut sauce; tangy and creamy with just enough heat to wake the taste buds up, but not so much that you’re gasping for water. (It’s served with fresh ciabatta so you can mop the sauce up afterwards – score!) Justin had the coronation chicken salad; the chicken was on a bed of lush greens with gherkins and toasted seeds, a most satisfying, filling dish with stunning flavours.

We were already groaning but there was no way we were going to leave without trying at least one of the tantalising cakes on the dessert table. I overruled everyone and ordered a slice of chocolate cake, and we weren’t sorry! Theresa says the secret is the real chocolate used in the recipe…I’ll be going back for more of that! Loaf is a real treat on all fronts: vibe, food and value. They serve a range of mouth-watering breakfasts as well, perfect for a sumptuous meal any time of the day.

Great food, great location and truly passionate owners make for a great recipe when it comes to a food destination well worth visiting.

There is magic in the air when one steps out of the car at Sugar Rush Park. It is almost improbable to

suggest that, just a few minutes out of Ballito, there is this sanctuary of stillness and tranquillity. It is almost as if life just stops – or, at least slows down, for a few hours. It’s difficult to imagine this oasis did not exist once upon a time.

Sugar Rush was initially conceptualised by Gill in 2009, as an events-based listing company for the North Coast. But Gill, an avid cyclist, who at the time also ran a Cycling Academy for kids, saw a window to develop that vision while on a trail ride a few years ago.

Concurrently, businessmen Mark Johnson, Rose Juby, Kim Haggerman and Martin Allborough had a similar vision for Sugar Rush which was anchored by the floriculture centre they wanted to build. They approached Wayne Hulett, who made the land available for this development.

Wayne had been approached by Gill who was looking to develop this kids’ adventure centre and a home for her cycling academy and he introduced Mark and Rose to Gill which was the birth of the Sugar Rush concept at the venue. As the project was still a baby, Gill needed to focus on her role in the corporate space, and for a period was not able to be involved in Sugar Rush.

Mark and Rose approached Nick Leitch to develop the kids play areas at Sugar Rush and he too fell in love with their vision and joined them as partners in the venture. As the business started to grow and what began as a project of love started to require more and more time, as events like The Warrior race and various MTB races brought over 6000 people through the park over just a few days, the parties agreed that key drivers were needed for the business.

With that a new and exciting chapter is beginning where the reins are being handed over to allow Sugar Rush to take the next steps under the management of Peter Rowntree who, together with his daughter Lisa created the much celebrated Lola’s Coffee Shop in Umhlanga. Adding huge energy to the team is the return of Gill after realising she just couldn’t avoid her dream any longer.

In a constantly evolving environment, Peter and Gill are aiming to create a space where a family could visit, stay for the entire the day and not once complain of being

bored. Renovations are currently taking place at the park, beginning with the kids’ adventure zone with the new Pump Track opening by the end of September. It will not only be suitable for mountain bikes but skate boards, scooters, roller blades and especially BMX bikes.

Sugar Rush is already a popular party venue, with its bright, jolly party tents. “I love watching children arrive with their parents, then shooting off to ride the trails, or run around until they are breathless. That’s what this is about; themed parties, children riding trails with their mates in a safe, free and spacious environment,” says Gill.

The Sugar Rats Cycling Academy is also due for a relaunch in October. Sugar Rush has also partnered with local charity organisation, Vision153: “we have 12 new kids bikes now available for hire at the park. The majority of the proceeds will go to Vision153.”

The café’s menu has also undergone a few changes and, with the iLembe Winery just

next door, looks set to become a favourite with locals. The public can also buy wholesale flowers from the Floriculture Centre; the aroma of the fresh blooms swirls around you while you eat your meal in peace and quiet – only the occasional chirping of a passing bird breaks the silence. With free WiFi (that should get a few cheers!) and a deli menu on the cards, it is a winning recipe. “Think about it: bring your family and order a picnic basket from the deli, which you can enjoy together. It’s magical!” The park has also played host to several events and festivals, including the annual Warrior Race and the Sugar Rush Classic, which is a firm favourite on the ROAG Calendar. They recently linked up with Cappeny Estates in their first strawberry picking festival, hosting a Hirsch & Weber Cook Off on Public Holiday “National Braai Day” as the start to the Bumper Ballito Weekend!

Sugar Rush also hosts the popular 5km Park Run every Saturday at 8am.

Ultimately, Peter and Gill are out to create a tourist destination, encouraging a country lifestyle just minutes from the city. “It’s literally a farm two minutes from Ballito,” Gill smiles. “The location is ideal and I always say it’s my happy place. We want to become the place where the community knows they can relax, but still be close to their homes. There are so many exciting plans in the pipeline and we with the continual developments in and around Ballito, a place like Sugar Rush is desperately needed.”

if you drive around Ballito, you will see branding and signage that was – in most cases – the work of signZone. established in 2005, the company has remained at the forefront of customised graphic design and signage products. after almost a decade, signZone recently underwent a branding overhaul itself; we chatted to owners dawie kruger and Martin Bernardü about the fresh, new look.

When Dawie and Martin started SignZone 10 years ago, one of their first projects was branding and signage at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre, which also got off the ground around the same time. To

this day, the company is still involved at the centre; this bears testament to their infallible staying power and reputation for excellence. But, as Martin mentioned, the methods used back then and what may have been on trend a decade ago, have changed. This, in part, led to the re-brand, he says. “Times have changed and we have to change with them,” he smiles.

The company’s new look includes a redesign of their colourful logo and signage; the new logo features a slick, streamlined insignia and just two bold colours: a bright red and pristine white. “Many companies, most recently Google, have gone the route of a simpler, cleaner brand. We feel our new branding aptly represents our fresh, new outlook.” The SignZone vehicles have changed from white to red, while the business premises in Platinum Park have also been updated: outdoor fabricated signs, wall graphics, a lick of paint and new uniforms.

In their years of business, SignZone has assisted many local companies build up a full branding package, from

logos to lining them up with the niche they want to occupy within their respective market. This includes shop front signage, vehicle wrapping, vinyl sandblasting, in-store branding and custom wall graphics. SignZone services prominent brands from Ballito; they also manufacture and install

ALL estate road and house signs, and numbers, on the North Coast. Through their unique business

relationship where each one brings in his specific strengths – and with a dedicated team – Dawie and Martin

have established a well-oiled machine that is sure to be around for several more decades to come.

SignZone may now boast a superb new look, but there is one thing that will not change, says Dawie: the faultless, tireless work ethic locals have come to associate with the business. For as long as it’s been around, the SignZone team has had the same guarantee: the job is only finished when the client is totally satisfied. “We will stay true to our reputation of providing quality, excellent service. That is what the community has come to expect, and what we will continue to put out.”

I have a theory about this time of year which has evolved from many years of working with people in business. I’d love to tell you that there is a scientific and deeply theoretical base to it, but that wouldn’t be true. In fact, until I was writing this article, it was really

just a view that I held on something, but now it seems that my theory does have some actual science behind it — who knew!

Around September or October each year we see the start of the “silly season”. What exactly is the silly season, you ask? Well, it’s that time of year when everybody wants everything done right now — right away, with no delays and bucket-loads of gusto. And they want it all from you. You feel as if you have become the centre of some great slavery conspiracy and your workload doubles, or even triples, as you try to get it all done. Add to that all the deadlines, targets and goals that you need to worry about and you instantly understand why it’s called the silly season — there is just no way it’s going to happen, plus you don’t have any energy left. Here’s what’s happening:

You’re getting roped into projects. The first thing we need to realise is that the majority of people have either not started projects that were part of their “to do” list at the start of the year, or they’ve just realised they are 75 percent through the year and stand very little chance of finishing it, even if they did start it. So, as with all great projects, they’ll rope in any resources that they can to try and sprint to the finish and make it happen. If you are a person who people can rely on, they’ll be looking to you for help — learn to say no.

Some goals or targets get missed. Like projects, people also tend to set goals or targets for themselves and entering the silly season they wake up to the fact that those may not be reached. The last three months of the year (and December isn’t really a work month) are when the biggest push is asked for to either hit the goals or get close. It’s always great to be a team player and put in a big effort, but don’t get over-burdened with other people’s unrealistic goals or targets.

You’re tired and here’s why — and this is a key part of my theory. We all have an internal clock, referred to as the circadian system, which regulates numerous functions, including when we sleep and wake, and it works in 24-hour cycles. Since our bodies like rhythm

and structure, it works out that, for most of us, eight hours is the amount of time that we’re wired to work for. That’s just over 2000 hours a year for a normal work-week. Okay, now work out how much extra time you’ve been working or staying up late when your body needs sleep. If you work for an extra hour a day, that’s over a full month per year in time that you’ve put in. Add to that the late nights and your body is craving a break — and it knows that December is that time. Problem is that you’ve “used up” all your work energy by October, so you’re running on fumes… and you’re taking on an extra load from those around you pushing to finish projects and reach goals.

If you’ve stayed the course and are reading this article, here’s how to handle these challenges and finish strong. It’s simple — all it takes is a little effort and some courage.

• Get to bed earlier. I’m not talking crazy early, but just think

finishingAs we head into the last few months of the year we’ve got to make sure we stay focused, keep our energy levels up and be concious of how silly season could derail us.

about how you fall asleep when you go camping. No TV, no lights, everything dark. Your body tells you that it’s time to sleep and you listen. Do the same at home.

• Say no. This is hard, but don’t get pulled into projects at the last minute. You won’t get the credit for making it happen and you could carry the blame if it doesn’t.

• Communicate. If you’ve been given unrealistic goals or targets for the last three months, tell someone — 10 percent or 20 percent is a decent stretch above target, but trying to do half the year’s sales in two months won’t help you to finish strong. It’ll demoralise you and make you doubt your own ability.

• Remember that it’s the silly season. Most people aren’t aware of why they’re acting the way they are. Now you do, however, so explain it to them and smile. All clocks, goals and projects get reset in January, so you’ve got a new year to try and make things happen.

If you’d like to share your thoughts on my ideas, I’d be happy to hear from you about them. As I said, it really is my theory that’s evolved over years. It’s helped me to manage the latter part of the year and be a better leader by not burdening my team. There is a fine balance between pushing to finish a year strong and being silly — I’m sure that you’ll be on the right side!

“I’ve always loved food,” Callie-Anne sips her cappuccino. “Always munching. Jeez,” she laughs. “I don’t know if that makes it a passion or a problem!” Zimbabwean-born Callie-Anne moved to South Africa in 2002, boarding for two years before her parents built a home in Ballito. “I love it here,” Callie-Anne’s eyes sparkle. “I think what’s best is how Ballito balances that big city life with the small town feel.”

Callie-Anne studied film and acting at the New York Film Academy when she finished school; this is clear from her flawless diction and animated expressions when she speaks. Once she had graduated from the NYFA, Callie-Anne lived in London for a while, where she spun into the world of food. “London has an amazing food culture. I was eating in the craziest restaurants and pubs, tasting all kinds of different food…visiting food festivals and chatting to stall owners. Then, watching copious amounts of Come Dine with Me, Masterchef UK and Jamie Oliver’s shows turned it into a slight obsession.”

But London was not to be Callie-Anne’s stepping stone – she hopped back to Africa, to run the kitchens at her family’s lodge in Mozambique while her then-fiancé Greg, now her husband, ran the crocodile farm. “I was in my element! I could change the

menu every day, if I wanted. I love cooking on the spur of the moment.” It was this type of cooking that encouraged Callie-Anne to enter season one of Masterchef SA. Though she only made it to the top 25, she garnered quite a following. This kick started a new phase in her career: her blog, Callie-Anne Cooks. “I think the public enjoyed watching me because I’m real. I look like a glam diva, but I’m quite a tomboy. I spoke my mind on camera and my personality caught attention.”

The television bug had bitten rather hard, so Callie-Anne began looking for an avenue to conceptualise her own show. “I’d been planning the show for a while. I knew it was the goal – to travel the world, cooking different foods in an array of areas.” She sent a demo to Graeme Swanepoel and Damian Brown of New Vision Pictures, in Johannesburg, who fell in love with her feisty, quirky character. “Within two months, I had a film crew at the lodge in Mozambique. There was no time to catch my breath, no time to write a script, to plan!” But Callie-Anne thrived during the intense, six-week production schedule. “I wore every outfit in my wardrobe, and did my own hair and make-up. My recipes weren’t even perfected before we started filming; they came alive on camera, so it was really organic.”

Callie-Anne Cooks Into the Wild sees Callie-Anne venturing into the villages around the lodge, cooking with the locals. The show features her unique recipes and anecdotes from her time in Mozambique. Not surprising, then, that United Kingdom-based commercial TV network ITV picked up the show, buying the rights to distribute it worldwide. “I freaked when I heard. This is everything,” Callie-Anne shakes her head in amazement. “All I wanted was to get on television, to prove to myself I can do it. And now that it’s happening, it’s so surreal!” Season one of the show has already started showing in Asia, and will show in South Africa for the first time on October 8, on DSTV’s ITV-Choice Channel, at 8.05pm.

Callie-Anne is currently shooting season two and, while she couldn’t blurt any production secrets, she whispered that it’s being filmed locally. “I’m so excited for people to see what I can do. I want to inspire people to fall in love with the kitchen again. To have fun and be confident when they cook!”

Follow Callie-Anne on Instagram and Twitter @callieannecooks, or like her Facebook page at Callie Anne Cooks. Also, check out her sizzle reels and videos on her website www.callie-annecooks.com.

With her jaunty dungarees and cascading ombre hair, Callie-Anne Gavazzi radiates confidence. We met on a chilly morning in Ballito, but being in her company instantly warmed me up. I chatted to the local girl about blogging, Masterchef SA and…oh, yes

– her TV show being picked up by an international company!

“I was born in Athens,” Alex tells me. “We moved to South Africa when I was four years old. I think I’ve always had a thing for drama.” Leigh-Ann nods, and launches into a demonstration of Alex as a toddler. “He would stand in front of the TV with his nappy on, arms akimbo, warbling along to Pavarotti. Alex has always been dramatic.”

Alex’s first role was as a frog, at the age of two years old. Performances as an ant and zebra followed; Alex jokes that he’s a good animal. He continued with drama through primary school and, in grade seven, his hard work paid off:

he landed a role in French film ‘Mister Bob’ with veteran French actor Christian Clavier. “I played Mister Bob’s son and, after meeting the man I was playing in real life, I was struck by how similar we are. Down to our mannerisms,” Alex tells me. He says being on a movie set was an unbelievable experience. “Most of the movie was shot abroad. I had a trailer and assistant,” Alex wiggles his eyebrows. “That was the life!” More recently, Alex starred in Crawford Preparatory’s ‘No Clue’, bringing the wacky character of ‘Peter Stitch’ to life. This, reveals Alex, was challenging in that he is unlike the Afrikaans, gum-snapping

Stitch. “It was amusing that I could play someone so unlike me. Peter Stitch was such a loser! If I met him, I probably would have slapped him,” Alex rolls his eyes. “People have this opinion that drama is a girly thing, that boys shouldn’t do it. I don’t believe that.”

Alex derives deep satisfaction from drama; he finds himself fascinated by the transformative process. “I start with nothing and create a person from scratch. I have to create a world and a life prior to where they are when I play them. A script is just words on a page; I have to colour it in. And then, sharing it onstage

In his role as media executive for Crawford, Alex manages the school’s social media, including its Instagram account. He loves the challenge – he is a keen photographer and budding graphic designer.

If there is on place you want to go back to more than once, it’s Thailand. This place is absolutely beautiful from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. The people in this part of the world are so welcoming and constantly doing anything to keep you happy.

There is nothing you won’t love about this place!

In bodyboarding you need to work twice as hard for 1/10th of the reward compared to

everyone else. It’s an extremely difficult sport to make a career out of. It’s near impossible here in South Africa at the moment, but the

group work is all in place and it’s a ticking time bomb.... The bodyboarding scene in durban is run by bodyboarders, each of whom share the

same interest and pursue the same goals. The dream is to grow the sport!

Our provincial side is the best in South Africa. winning the SA Team title at a whopping 23 out of 25 South African championships and many individual titles as well. The province hosts trials five times a year where by the

competitors get judged and scored, and inthe end the selected team of 24 riders are

selected to go to SA champs. This year the team will be heading down to Richards Bay to compete in the SA champs and they are really

working hard together to maximise all riders’ abilities.

The team and province does a lot of outreach and development work, because they firmly believe in giving back to the community and

introducing the younger kids – especially of previously disadvantaged areas, to the

freedom of this beautiful sport.

BEAUTY REVIEW

Simply simbiosis, Perfect simbiosis

Last, but not least, we went for the perfect-length back, neck and shoulder massage while our feet were treated to a foot masque which left them feeling even more pampered. The massage was done at the perfect pressure, which was fabulous. I really don’t enjoy walking away from a massage feeling bruised and tender, but here I could feel that those knots in the back and neck were definitely being worked on although I definitely didn’t feel that I was being pounded. Then, to complete our treatment, we had our toenails painted while we were stretched out on the massage bed.

I truly feel that they have things just right at Simbiosis Spa. Little things, like not painting your nails before all your treatments are done, placing the plush pedi chairs in the area with the best view, keeping the salon quiet, but with a very good selection of music playing softly in the background — the little details that really count.

We were thoroughly impressed with the newest spa on the block and Michelle, the owner, is extremely passionate about what she does. She makes sure that her staff are well trained and happy, something that is felt by the customers. We will definitely be back!

Greece and it was the first time that I had tried this range. I found the products to be really good — they smell amazing and left my skin feeling hydrated and soft. Shai, who pampered me, has the softest touch and under her hands the facial felt more like a spiritual experience — I absolutely loved it.

I love pedicures, but I judge each one on its comfort and foot/ leg massage. Well, it’s 10/10 for Simbiosis and Xolie — it’s sheer pedicure heaven and the massage was perfect and a decently long one at that! The products they use smell amazing and have left my feet so, so soft.

We were invited to come and experience the Simbiosis Spa and what an awesome day spa it is,

nestled in just the best setting, with the rolling green hills of Simbithi in front of you and a sea view to the side. A pedi with views like this takes relaxing to a whole other level.

We were encouraged to try the Simbiosis Signature Retreat and I believe that I have now found my perfect spa combination. I had a Specialised Therapy facial, a full pedi and ended with a back, neck and shoulder massage. Yea, I know, right — perfection!

The facial was really good. Here they use Juliette Armand products from

so, most of us might already be aware of WOW Cutting, a creative and funky laser cutting company. But I’m sure

you’d all be surprised to hear about WOW Studio, a little gem hidden in the same building where all your hair and make-up dreams can come true. I recently got to spend a morning with the ladies at WOW; I immediately got the warm sense of the family-run business.

The studio is run by Jen, who recently moved down with her husband and son. Her husband, Henry works for WOW Cutting and her son is thoroughly enjoying life on the North Coast. She also made the move to be closer to her immediate family. Jen has been a stylist for more than 10 years and says hair is her passion; chatting to her, she mentioned that she believes in healthy hair, a one-on-one salon experience where you can just relax – or vent, if need be.

It was this warm atmosphere that helped me relax as I got my hair coloured, lightening it for Spring…and Summer, which is just around the corner. I also got a little snip to keep the length for now, and an amazing blow wave. Jen is fond of natural products, so she uses the Davines range. The products are paribins and sulphate free, with very low ammonia content, which makes them healthier for your hair.

After my gorgeous hairdo, I was left in the hands of Jen’s sister, Caitlyn, an internationally qualified make-up artist. She has been in the industry for more than eight years, working on films, photoshoots, magazines, fashion shows and a few amazing years at MAC Cosmetics. As Caitlyn was painting my face, I was very curious and she was happy to answer my questions! For instance, I asked why she uses 100% natural hair brushes to apply foundation.

Her response was that brushes don’t give off heat (like your fingers would) and heat opens your pores – not the best, as it encourages oil production on the skin. While we were busy, Jen and Caitlyn’s mum Wendy was clicking away, taking some lovely photographs.

I really learnt much about my hair and make-up during my visit to WOW. I kept wondering what makes these ladies different…I figured it must be their passion and energy, and the love they have for each other, and their crafts, that absolutely made my morning.

If you haven’t visited them yet, do yourself a favour!

What does your organisation/initiative involve?

Santa Shoebox Project is an inspiring community initiative of the NPO and Public Benefit Kidz2Kidz Trust. Santa Shoebox Project collects and distributes gifts to children from vulnerable social backgrounds throughout South Africa and Namibia.

hoW did you start uP the organisation/initiative? When did you start it uP? The Santa Shoebox Project which started in 2006, is run by volunteers and supported by donations. On a national level it has grown from 180 shoebox gifts in 2006 to a 109 930 boxes in 2014. There are currently 52 satellites/dropoffs – of which Ballito is one The Ballito satellite is now in its third year and this year we aim to get boxes to 700 children. In 2013 we collected 293 boxes and in 2014 we collected 750 boxes.

What do you take aWay from helPing others?Helping others helps us to connect to our community and plays a part in making it a better place. The children selected are rural, vulnerable (predominantly orphaned) children who aren’t in a position to usually receive a gift such as this.

hoW imPortant do you think it is to make a difference in your community? So important and it is wonderful to see how the Ballito community embraces the spirit of giving

through this project. We have local schools, golf groups, book clubs and businesses who have pledged to this project. What is unique about this project is that donors are encouraged to involve their own children in the process of personally selecting the name of a child and putting together his or her individualised, age appropriate Santa Shoebox gift. This worthy initiative thereby encourages the whole family to adopt SSB as a family project providing an opportunity for children to learn from an early age, the gift of giving.

What is your fondest memory of your outreach? Two fondest memories.

Public dropoff days last year - where the public who had pledged boxes dropped them off so that these could be packed for the respective facilities. This gave us the opportunity to engage with each and every donor who had pledged a box. It was very heartwarming. And of course the celebrations, where we travelled to the facilities and handed out the boxes. For us it was particularly rewarding to see how the teenagers appreciated their gifts – everyday items like soap that we often take for granted. We have an amazing team of volunteers who all give up of their valuable time to come together and contribute to this project and their community.

The Dolphin Coast has experienced exponential growth over the past ten years as people from all over the country migrate to the greater Ballito area, and in so doing have transformed the once outlying coastal seaside town into one of South Africa’s development hotspots. Having witnessed the development and growth of Zimbali first hand since 1997 it occurred to me that there appears to be a clearly defined lifecycle in the development of a large-scale residential estate. Since the North Coast has several high quality residential estates that have been established and developed, it is then instructive to analyse the growth lifecycle of Zimbali to see what possible lessons can be learnt from this experience and how this could help us understand the growth lifecycle of newer estates along our coastline. Consider the six stages of the development lifecycle of a typical residential estate:

Stage 1: Greenfields development This is the new launch of land phase with limited infrastructure. Pricing has to be particularly competitive to convince investors that the overall development will be worth the extended period of time it typically takes for an estate to get to a point where it becomes an environment in which families want to live. The financial strength and profile of the development company is key to its success. For Zimbali this happened in 1996 with its launch and first land sales.

Stage 2: Infrastructure and early adoptersThe first vacant land phases are sold and very first homes built. Initial infrastructure goes in and the cash drain on the development company is enormous. Management expertise and staffing is required to manage and run the project. Sub-Developers become key clients to the Master Developer and are the catalyst to

get the development going at this stage. For Zimbali this was between 1996 and 1998.

Stage 3: Early development – adolescenceWith consistent marketing and PR initiatives the development starts to gain traction and attract attention. General market acceptance and confidence grows. The first re-sales and re-investment happens by existing home-owners. Phasing of land releases is critical during this development stage. The Master Developer has to balance the release of land with the building of the infrastructure. For Zimbali this happened from 1999 to 2003.

Stage 4: Tipping point - broader market adoptionEarly successes gain momentum and this growing confidence in and appeal of the estate start to draw in a broader market of end-users. Pricing starts to escalate and move up the steeper part of the curve. The resale market starts to develop and is supported by the sale of new land. A critical pitfall to avoid at this stage is neglect of the resale market by the Master Developer. Without a vibrant and active resale market the first sales market will stagnate. During this stage the bulk of the vacant land is sold. For Zimbali this happened between 2004 and 2007.

Stage 5: Maturing of resale market and active trade in vacant landThe momentum created in the prior stage translates into an active resale market, which now exceeds the market of first land sales. At this stage the number of new homes under construction grows exponentially and the Master Developer has to control many things - access by contractors, security within the estate, architectural development and guidelines, the recreational amenities and even the behavior of home owners in a professional

and efficient way. World-class management and administration skills are required to ensure momentum is maintained. Control is handed over from the Master Developer to the Homeowners Association and a professional management team that is directly accountable to the homeowners is put in place. The constitution of the development may have to be amended to ensure it reflects the requirements of the homeowners who have now grown in importance. The remaining vacant land is actively traded and price escalation is expected. For Zimbali this happened between 2008 and 2012.

Stage 6: Scarcity phase - true value of all property becomes evidentAt this stage the estate is typically fully developed with all of its amenities in place and up and running. Its management structure is bedded down and daily operations are handled efficiently. The Master Developer is largely out of the picture and the homeowner representatives run the estate as a board of directors providing guidance to their appointed professional managers. Scarcity of homes and vacant land starts to emerge. The scarcity begins with vacant land and pricing escalates exponentially - far in excess of average property price increases. This in turn supports the pricing of existing homes. Zimbali has been at this stage since 2012.

The last site owned by the master developer is typically sold either in Stage 5 or 6. At Zimbali this happened in February 2015 when I sold the very last site owned by the Master Developer. This represented the end of a two-decade development lifecycle for the Master Developer and provides some insight into the realistic time it takes to fully complete a large-scale residential development.
