Action group fighting to improve safety on A66
IN response to increasing concern in Ravensworth and neighbouring communities about the continuing record of accidents and incidents on our local stretch of the A66, we have formed an action group in Ravensworth in order to more energetically campaign for improvements.
We are gradually gaining support from adjacent com-munities. There are two areas of specific focus:
1. The inadequacy of the existing road junction at New Lane (the main route out of Ravensworth to join the A66), and
2. Measures to reduce the inherent risk of accidents occurring on the two-mile stretch of single carriageway road between Black Hill and West Layton. Specifically we are pushing for a reduced speed limit on this dangerous section of road.
In relation to 1) above we have held a meeting with Highways England to obtain more information on any plans to improve the New Lane junction.
In relation to 2) above we met on 30th November with the Police & Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, Julia Mulligan, who has expressed strong support for our campaign and agreed to immediately discuss our concerns with the Chief Constable.
To aid a full understanding of our concerns and to provide justification for our suggestions we prepared a 24-page dossier on the road safety issue which was provided to Julia Mulligan and which we hope will also be presented in due course to the
Chief Constable. In this dossier we emphasised our grave concerns that unless speed control and other measures were taken, there was a real risk of a fatality. Very sadly, this in fact did occur on Sunday 26th November, when a 77-year-old man travelling east collided head-on with an HGV travelling west at the West Layton junction.
We have sent this information to neighbouring communities in the hope that you will agree to support our campaign.
If any local resident has additional views to express on this matter or any useful suggestions, please contact us and we will endeavour to include your concerns. Equally if you wish to be involved in our action group, please let us know. Please email to [email protected]
This email has been sent to the following local communities:
Aldborough St John, Aske, Caldwell, Dalton, East/West Layton, Eppleby, Gayles, Gilling (Hartforth), Kirby Hill, Melsonby, Middleton Tyas, Newsham and Whashton.
