learn what it takes to compete in a
piano competition when WcTe
explores Tennessee Tech university’s
Young artist Piano competition in Youth:
behind the Keys.
each year, high school students gather
from all over the region to perform selected
pieces in front of three judges. Youth: Behind the Keys takes a look behind-the-
scenes to discover what’s at the heart of
these young competitors and how studying
music at a young age has helped them not
only with discovering their talent, but also
helping them academically, build their self-
esteem and realizing their future endeavors.
With the piano competition entering
its seventh year, dr. catherine Godes,
Professor of Piano at TTu, is continually
impressed by the caliber of talent she sees
during these performances. but the event is
more than simply a showcase of local talent.
“i want to use this competition as a
way to encourage, in this region especially,
young pianists,” explains dr. Godes. “and
if they hear what some of these prodigious
talents are doing, it could inspire them.”

on september 21, 2013, the first ever World Peace day celebration was held at the isha
institute of inner-sciences in mcminnville. The event was created to promote global unity in honor of the united nations international day of Peace. arianna huffington, founder and editor-in-chief for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Huffington Post, was the headline speaker. named in 2013 by forbes as one of the World’s most Powerful Women, arianna huffington was also named twice to the Time 100, Time Magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people. in may 2005, she launched The Huffington Post, a news and
blog site that quickly became one of the most widely read, linked to and frequently cited media brands on the internet. in 2012, the site won a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. huffington is also a nationally syndicated columnist and author of 13 books. The person she sat down to have a conversation with was isha foundation founder, sadhguru J. vasudev, renowned indian yogi and visionary. named one of india’s 50 most influential people, he has addressed prominent global forums on issues as diverse as socio-economic development, leadership and spirituality. he has served as delegate to the united nations millennium Peace summit and the World Peace congress and has been a special invitee to the World economic forum (2006-2009), the australian leadership retreat (2006) and Ted (2009).
his interviews are featured in The New York Times, bbc, bloomberg, cnni and cnbc. he is the author of several books, the subject of four books and co-author of amazon’s bestseller “midnights with the mystic.” Watch their fascinating conversation, plus interviews with attendees and the outdoor concert by the l.a.-based alt rock band The mowglis in this WcTe mini-documentary.

WCTE is about local service. From the Stations of
Imagination event for children to building healthier communities
with activities such as the Run for Your Mama 5k’s and the
Haunted Half Marathon to the free film presentations and
discussions at Community Cinema.
In 2013, we promoted economic development through tourism
with the show, Discover the Upper Cumberland, highlighted
our Tennessee farmers and green entrepreneurs with Live Green
Tennessee, opened our nation to great music and natural beauty
with award-winning series like Bluegrass Underground, Jammin’
at Hippie Jack’s, Live From Livingston and the Smithville Fiddlers’
Jamboree. We also created a mini-documentary about Isha’s
International Day of Peace. The independent producers behind
these works, like Todd Jarrell, Todd Mayo, Jack Stoddart and our
own WCTE staff, represent our region at its best.
The President and CEO of the Corporation for Public
Broadcasting, Patricia Harrison, came to Cookeville to speak at our
annual dinner. As well, The PBS series Road Trip Nation also paid
a visit to Putnam County for the benefit of local students.
We now have two locations for you to visit – our corporate
offices downtown on the square in Cookeville, and our technical
wing on the beautiful Tennessee Tech campus.
It’s impossible to list all we accomplished in 2013, but I
encourage you to go online to wcte.org and look at our annual
report. At WCTE, we look forward to serving our beloved Upper
Cumberland in 2014, and we will
continue to work hard as your
community-owned PBS station. Thank
you for taking this journey with us and
for making WCTE your very own.

A Message from Becky Magura, President & CEO of WCTE
The Showman and The Hero follows hollywood producer Jesse l. lasky, founder of Paramount Pictures, on his 20-year quest to make a film about Tennessee’s son and one of the most decorated heroes of World War i, sergeant alvin c. York. New York, Wednesday evening, 2 July 1941: at the smashingly successful premiere of the Warner brothers film sergeant York, a writer for the Hollywood Reporter likened the spectacular pageantry to “a royal procession.” rolling down broadway from the ritz Towers to the astor Theater amid sweeping spotlights and popping flashbulbs, amid the thousands gathered to witness the event, a limousine carrying Jessie lasky and alvin c. York arrived following an army marching band, playing loudly and enthusiastically. The film was worthy of its parade. a few hours later, the curtain fell to tumultuous applause. The critics were unanimous in their praise. a typical review read, “…not only one of the best pictures of this year, but one of the greatest ever made in hollywood (Kate cameron, New York Daily News).” Sergeant York became a huge critical and commercial success. it won the academy award for best Picture of the year and was the top-grossing film for 1941. This is a fascinating account of how a determined filmmaker, Jesse l. lasky, brought one of america’s most treasured stories to the screen.

revisit the world’s only consulting detective, sherlock holmes, and his long-suffering and faithful friend,
dr. John Watson. benedict cumberbatch and martin freeman return as sherlock holmes and John Watson in three new 90-minute episodes of the contemporary reinvention of the sir arthur conan doyle classic, created by steven moffat (Doctor Who) and mark Gatiss. “The genius Sherlock team has done it again,” says masTerPiece executive producer rebecca eaton. “These new episodes are as wildly imaginative and
brilliantly produced as all the others. These people are Good!” nearly 11 million viewers tuned into the second season of Sherlock, which ended with a shocking cliffhanger. fans flocked to the internet to speculate about sherlock’s “demise,” and express their eagerness to find out what happens next. “We love that Sherlock fans are so passionate and eager to see season 3,” said Pbs chief Programming executive and General manager of General audience Programming, beth hoppe. “The pairing of Downton Abbey and Sherlock in January
offers a blockbuster night of british drama only on Pbs stations.” as in previous seasons, titles for the three episodes are pegged to a classic sherlock holmes title by arthur conan doyle—delightfully, wittily, and briskly updated.

behind the scenes
Does This Art Make My Lobby Look Phat?
The WcTe lobby shows two sides of my
multifaceted art career. The bubble Wall was a commissioned mural. a commission is dependent on being able to evaluate what the client wants, taking into account budget restraints, timetables and logistic accessibility. i’ve modified a nationally established Pbs ‘bubble’ motif and recognizable icons from well-known Pbs programming, and adapted them to the WcTe lobby. on the other hand, my paintings in the lobby are
free form abstractions and impressionistic landscapes straight out of my mind and artistic vision. They are the end result of my talent and insatiable desire to create. The only person necessary to please was myself.
Protect My Public Media

i did not make clay pieces specifically for the WcTe new offices on the square, but i may as well have. They
are quite comfortable there, and are complemented by their surroundings. my ‘Pod series,’ comprising three large textured clay eggs in a cool palette, floats serenely on the blue lobby wall. in the lobby’s picture windows are my ‘fly now’
and ‘me, me, me!’ both are figurative sculptures, with gentle stories to tell. They are interesting to encounter and easy to relate to, just like WcTe! in the upstairs office a large bowl, “as You like it,” is perched. it’s a strong and lively piece, with acorn feet and “wings” that lift it and give it spirit. “lotus” is placed in the upstairs
conference room. The piece is tall, intense and peaceful, referring to the power of ritual. all in all, it is a very diverse group of work, but these pieces have settled into the creative environment at our Pbs station’s new home and made themselves comfortable! artwork does this in any environment: it adds an energy, a presence. it adds life.

Darla Kiel Runge
originally from holland, michigan, darla moved to the upper cumberland in 2005 to
help her husband rollin set up a tooling business in cookeville. she soon fell in love with the beauty of the terrain, the people and the weather – she does not miss the michigan snow one little bit. darla’s introduction to WcTe came one day in 2006 when she was out horseback riding with her friend suzanne Whitehead (nee bussell), who was a WcTe employee at the time. suzanne mentioned to darla that the station could use a few more volunteers to help with the Great Tv auction. darla volunteered. becky magura admired darla’s organizational skills and asked her to come on board at WcTe as her personal assistant. but with the staff so few and the station’s commitments so many, darla ended up being everybody’s assistant. for the next six years, until her recent retirement, what darla enjoyed the most about working at WcTe was the camaraderie. “We laughed. a lot. i was amazed at
the informal atmosphere. it was just… comfortable. in my previous jobs in michigan, i worked from the moment i walked in the door until i walked out eight hours later. here, i was more than part of a team – i was part of a family. “ darla has seen the station come a long ways since she first walked through the doors. “becky magura really encouraged her people to learn as much as possible. she is driven to keep improving, to not stay in the box. she dares to reach out, to be different. a lot of people would be afraid to try but she seems to have no fear. Whatever the project, her attitude is… “we can do this, we will pull this off, this will happen.” “The station has improved 100 fold since 2006. both the content and the clarity of the signal have improved dramatically but it goes beyond that. WcTe grew by being more and more connected to the communities of the upper cumberland, and learned by studying what other Pbs stations are doing across the nation. i never dreamed that it would evolve into to the great station it is today.”

Tuesday, January 7 in the early 20th century, the average american medicine cabinet was a would-be poisoner’s treasure chest: radioactive radium in health tonics, thallium in depilatory creams, morphine in teething medicine and potassium cyanide in cleaning supplies. While the tools of the murderer’s trade multiplied as the pace of industrial innovation increased, the scientific knowledge (and political will) to detect and prevent the crimes lagged. This changed in 1918, when new York city hired its first scientifically trained medical examiner, charles norris. over a decade and a half, norris and his chief toxicologist, alexander Gettler, turned forensic chemistry into a formidable science, sending many a murderer to the electric chair and setting the standards that the rest of the country would ultimately adopt. based on the best-selling book by deborah blum.

The beatles, the civil rights act, the Gulf of Tonkin, barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign -- in 1964, cities across the country erupted in violence while americans tried to make sense of the Kennedy assassination. based on The Last Innocent Year: America in 1964 by award-winning journalist Jon margolis, this film follows some of the most prominent figures of the time and explores the actions of ordinary americans whose frustrations, ambitions and anxieties began to turn the country onto a new course.
American Masters: SalingerTuesday, January 21
featuring 150 interviews, including J.d. salinger’s friends, colleagues and members of his inner circle who have never spoken on the record before, as well as film footage, photographs and other material that has never been seen. The film is the first work to get beyond The Catcher in the Rye author’s meticulously built-up wall: his childhood, painstaking work methods, marriages, private world and the secrets he left behind after his death.

Super Skyscrapers: A Four Part Series
Wednesdays, February 5, 12, 19, 26 as urban space shrinks, we build higher and faster than ever before, creating a new generation of skyscrapers. “super skyscrapers” are pushing the limits of engineering, technology and design to become greener, stronger, smarter and more luxurious than their predecessors. This four-part series follows the creation of four extraordinary buildings, showcasing how they will revolutionize the way we live, work and protect ourselves from potential threats.
Roman Catacomb MysteryWednesday, February 5
beneath the streets of rome lies an ancient city of the dead known as the catacombs — a labyrinth of tunnels, hundreds of miles long — a cemetery for the citizens of ancient rome. in 2002, maintenance workers stumbled through an opening in one of the tunnel walls and discovered a previously unknown complex of six small rooms, each stacked floor to ceiling with skeletons. it was a mass grave, locked away for nearly 2,000 years. Who were these people? Why were so many interred in one place, piled atop each other? and most important, what killed them? nova’s forensic investigation opens up new insights into the daily life and health of roman citizens during the heyday of the mighty roman empire.

Las MarThasThe annual debutante ball in Laredo, Texas is unlike any other. Part of the largest celebration of George Washington’s birthday in the world, a 114-year tradition, a select group of mostly Mexican-American girls is chosen each year to dress in elaborate gowns representing iconic figures from America’s colonial history. Their goal: to recreate a party hosted by Martha Washington, but this time set along the US/Mexico border. Las Marthas follows two of the girls as they prepare for this extraordinary rite of passage.

The TriaLs of MuhaMMad aLiA feature-length documentary film covering Ali’s toughest bout, his battle to overturn the five-year prison sentence he received for refusing U.S. military service. Trials is not a boxing film. It is a fight film tracing a formative period in Ali’s life, one that is remarkably unknown to young people today and tragically neglected by those who remember him as a boxer, but overlook how controversial he was when he first took center stage.

The most-watched drama in Pbs history enters its fourth gripping season with the whole world waiting to learn how the beloved
characters deal with a shocking tragedy. The acclaimed ensemble is back, together with returning guest star academy award®-winner shirley maclaine. all who tuned in last season know that matthew crawley—heir to downton abbey, husband to lady mary (dockery), and brand new father to a baby boy and successor—lies dead on a country road next to his overturned roadster. on top of this, the family is still grieving over the death in childbirth of sybil, mary’s youngest sister, who also left a baby behind. season 4 opens six months later. although it is the 1920s, britain still
observes mourning rituals that are almost victorian in their solemnity. nonetheless, the crawleys are beginning to snap out of it: robert, lord Grantham (bonneville), must manage the estate without his canny son-in-law; cora suddenly faces a staffing crisis; violet, who has seen enough tragedy, knows how to recoup quickly; isobel (Wilton), matthew’s mother, may never recover; edith (carmichael), who was jilted at the altar, tempts scandal with a new beau; and mary now finds herself the most desirable widow in Yorkshire. The servants also pick up, buck up, and get on with it—with new arrivals, departures, rivalries, and betrayals among the downstairs staff. life goes on at downton abbey. among the new faces are Paul Giamatti (sideways) as cora’s playboy brother, harold,
who appears in the season finale; dame harriet Walter (little dorrit) as violet’s old friend lady shackleton; Gary carr (death in Paradise) as jazz singer Jack ross; Joanna david (bleak house) as the duchess of Yeovil; Tom cullen (World Without end) as the dashing lord Gillingham, and Julian ovenden (smash, any human heart) as an unexpected houseguest. viewership and social media buzz have been soaring since the series launched in January 2011. season 3 reached a record 24.1 million viewers, more than any other drama in the history of Pbs, and the season had the highest Twitter buzz ever for public television. USA Today ranked it as a perfect four stars out of four. The Hollywood Reporter called it “an absolute pleasure to watch.” “We’d follow the crawleys off a cliff,” echoed The Philadelphia Inquirer. “Please have carson pack us a lunch.”
Watch the two-hour premiere of Downton Abbey on Sunday, January 5th at 8pm on WCTE.
