Fonz MotorcycleFrom Happy Daysheads to Auction

Happy Days, the beloved American sit-com that aired for ten years from 1974to 1984 and attracted millions of view-ers each week, helped launched thecareer of such actors as Ron Howard,Scott Baio and Henry Winkler.

Winkler’s character, Arthur Fonzarelli –known famously as The Fonz andFonzie became a cultural icon that stillresonates today. And Fonzie’s motor-cycle, a customized Triumph, wasowned off-screen by another culturalicon, Bud Ekins a famous as a mo-tocross racer, Hollywood stuntman(he’s the one that made that legendarymotorcycle jump over the barbed wirefence in The Great Escape), and asSteve McQueen’s best friend. With hiswarehouse of hundreds of motorbikes,Ekins was the go-to man in Hollywoodwhen producers needed two wheels. So when the people from Happy Dayscalled, it was Ekins who determinedwhat the coolest guy on TV should beriding. Taking an old Triumph in his col-lection, he simply removed the frontfender, replaced the handle bars andspray painted the tank silver and, violá,the Fonzie bike was born. Of course, noone had any idea of just how popularthe show would become or the magni-tude of fame Winkler’s character wouldachieve.

This now iconic emblem of Americanpop culture will be offered by Bonhamsat their annual Classic California Sale, held November 12th, at the PetersenAutomotive Museum in Los Angeles.Renowned for offering property from fa-mous actors each year – Steve Mc-Queen, Charles Bronson, Clark Gableand Bruce Willis, to name just a few –this autumn auction is not to be missedby aficionados of pop and custom cul-ture and entertainment and automotivehistory.
