What is an Atom Bomb?

Powerful explosive nuclear weapon fueled by the splitting, or fission, of the nuclei of uranium or plutonium in a chain reaction

Page 4: THE ATOM BOMB

Who Created the Atomic Bomb ?Named the Manhattan Project.

The leader of the Manhattan Project was U.S. Army Brigadier General Leslie R. Groves.

His team worked under the direction of American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Development of the atomic bomb began in 1939.

Working Principle

NUCLEAR CHAIN REACTIONS

Fission

Fusion

Atom Bombs work on FISSION reaction

Page 6: THE ATOM BOMB

NUCLEAR NUCLEAR FISSIONFISSION Nuclear fission is the splitting of one heavy

nucleus into two or more smaller nuclei, some sub-atomic particles, and energy.

A heavy nucleus is usually unstable due to many positive protons pushing apart.

Small changes of mass = huge changes in energy

When fission occurs:

Energy is produced. Neutrons are released.

Nuclear Fission

A nuclear chain reactionMay be triggered by a

Single neutron.

Nuclear fission is what occurs in nuclear power plants and atomic bombs

First ATOM BOMB test

The first atomic explosion was conducted, as a test, at Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945.

The energy from the explosion was equivalent to that of 20,000 tons of TNT.

It was dropped for testing purposes only.

Maximum at 500 kilotons of TNT.

WWII brought the first use of the atomic bomb for military action.

The bomb, nicknamed “Little Boy,” was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6th, 1945.

Even though it was a smaller atomic bomb, it still managed to kill over 65,000 people, and injure almost 70,000.

The total area of destruction was one mile in diameter.

Atom Bomb Types

10 feet (3 m) in length, 28 inches (71 cm) wide and weighed 8,900 lb (4000 kg). The energy released is equal to the 15000 tons of TNT

The second Atomic bomb, nicknamed “Fat Man,” dropped for military purposes during WWII.

It was dropped on August 9th, 1945, in Nagasaki, Japan.

39,000 people were killed, and 25,000 were injured.

Applications

These are used in Defense Academy.

Nearly 40+ countries are active in preparation of Atom Bombs

Atom Bomb was used in World War II against Japan, it took nearly 6 years to prepare.

Page 24: THE ATOM BOMB

Due to the Atom Bomb explosion plants get the side effect of incapable growth because of two reasons.

Gamma rays and x-rays released from Atomic Explosions.

Due to this radiations genetic changes in human causes many diseases about a decades.
