The Smart Tachograph

The Smart Tachograph (mandatory in new vehicles from June 15th 2019) was mainlyintroduced to increase security and hence reduce tampering, although it does have some‘Smart’ features. You may sometimes hear the new tachograph referred to as Generation 2(Gen2) or 1C but these are all effectively terms for the same thing.

No action is required in relation to driver cards as drivers will receive a new card as theirold one expires. You will find the new card referred to as 1C compatible. Both oldcards (1B) and new cards (1C) will work in all digital tachographs it is only the data that isrecorded on them which will differ. Much of the data is common to both cards but aspectssuch as GPS data and other security information will only be written to the new 1C card.

The new Smart tachograph is fitted with GNSS similar to your Sat Nav, it will automaticallyrecord the start and end of journeys for the driver. The Smart Tachograph can transmita small data packet to a roadside receiver for the purposes of enforcement, termed‘dedicated short range communication’ (DSRC). The data set does not feature personalinformation it is simply an indicator of either suspected tampering, tachograph misuse,calibration irregularities or speeding faults.

Download tools or remote download solutions purchased to work with older tachographwill not work with the new Smart tachograph unless firmware is updated or the devicereplaced. If you are already using a Tachosys solution it is very likely that you will haveaccess to a free firmware update subject to the age of your device. If you are not usinga Tachosys product you will need to check with the manufacturer of your solution.Tachosys resellers can of course provide you with a 1C compatible device straight away.Check our reseller list at; https://www.tachosys.com/Home/Resellers. In relationto remote tachograph download all Tachosys digiDL products will be upgradeable.Unfortunately this may not be the same for other manufacturer solutions so please checkwith your supplier.

If you are using stand alone tachograph analysis software then you will need to contactthe authors and check that an update is available. Cloud based solutions should beupdated automatically but make sure that any PC based elements, particularly for cardreading, are specifically updated.
