Family of Jimmy Van Heusen Goes “All the Way”
The family of Jimmy Van Heusen has established the Jimmy Van
Heusen Award at The ASCAP Foundation to honor the legacy of the
great American songwriter. Jimmy Van Heusen was one of the most
accomplished songwriters from the mid-twentieth century, with
countless hits sung and recorded by such American vocal icons as
Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Lena Horne and Rosemary Clooney. Some
of his most popular songs were written for movies.Teaming up with
lyricist Johnny Burke, Van Heusen began writing songs for Paramount
Pictures. Together he and Burke wrote the scores for many Bing
Crosby movies including Road to Zanzibar, Road to Morocco, Dixie,
and Going My Way, among others. Together they won their fi rst

Irresponsible,” and “High Hopes.” He and Cahn also received an Emmy

television and fi lm scoring. Jimmy Van Heusen
The ASCAP Foundation Congratulates Ginny Mancini
A rts leader, philanthropist, singer and dedicated ASCAP
Foundation Board member, Ginny Mancini, was recently honored with
the Distinguished Service Award from the Kaufman Cultural Center.
Ginny’s role as a leader in charitable endeavors on behalf of music
is wide-ranging and impressive. In 1984, she was co-founder of the
Society of Singers, dedicated to the health, welfare and education
of professional vocalists who fi nd themselves in need. In 1996,
she helped establish the Henry Mancini Institute after the passing
of her husband, Henry Mancini. Doz-ens of music education and
cultural organizations have benefi ted from her support and
activism in her home town of Los Angeles and across the country and
she has continually offered her resources and expertise to benefi t
the many programs and activi-ties of The ASCAP Foundation. We
congratulate her on this well-deserved honor!
In Memoriam
We mourn the passing of Phoebe Jacobs, Executive Vice President
of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation. Phoebe was a woman
of many talents and a true friend of The ASCAP Foun-dation. Phoebe
was a fi xture on the jazz scene since she began working as a hat
check girl in a jazz nightclub at age 17 and she was dedicated to
Louis and Lucille Armstrong. In 1969 she assisted in establish-ing
the Louis Armstrong Edu-cational Foundation where she served as
vice-president until her death on April 9, 2012. Always ready with
an idea and an action plan, she was responsible for fostering
programs at all school levels to promote music education –
particularly in the fi eld of jazz. She was a lively friend and
col-league and is sorely missed.

NEA Awards Grant to The ASCAP Foundation
On April 25th, 2012 the National Endowment for the Arts
announced the latest round of 2012 NEA funding which included a
grant to The ASCAP Foundation to support the Summer Music Camp at
Manhattan School of Music. This marks the 10th consecutive year
that The ASCAP Foundation has received a grant, so we are very
proud of this achievement.
The Summer Music Camp at Manhattan School of Music (MSM)
provides intensive music in-struction to children ranging in age
from 11 to 17 for voice majors in musical theater, and instrumental
majors for large and small ensembles. Camp goals include increasing
levels of music appreciation, knowledge, un-
ders tanding and perfor-mance skills based on the N a t i o n a
l L e a r n i n g Standards for the Arts. This unique op-portunity
goes beyond out-standing mu-
sical training. It instills discipline, positive social
development, a respect for each other’s abili-ties and a lesson in
teamwork.
The Summer Music Camp at MSM now includes a residential option
for campers attending from afar. Camp dates are July 9th - August
3rd.
