Well, summer has arrived, and if your summer is anything like mine, we are not doing all the normal things that we do during summer. This is such an extraordinary year. We are all trying to figure out next steps especially with ever changing COVID conditions. As much as you can, please take the time that you need to ground yourself in the reality of God at work in your life. Remember these words: And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. –Colossians 3:15

And somethings to think about: 1. God is always with us. It’s amazing to me how fast I forget this little truth of life. God is with us everywhere. Jesus knows exactly what we are going through because Jesus has faced it too. The Holy Spirit is continually moving around us and calling us into relationship. This idea is what keeps me going when I feel like my world is spinning out of control.

2. The church is here for all of us. We are placed here on ear th, formed in the image of

God, and given responsibility for spreading the Good News. The church is our place of community where we get to “practice” Christianity while trying to live it with one another. Above all, church supports us when we are out on a limb. It is the one place where (hopefully) grace and love are found above all else.

3. We are all the church. It’s by giving the Good News away that we are rewarded for our

effort and sacrifice. We are the ones that are making the Kingdom of Heaven a reality here in Salisbury. It’s not about the programs or the facility. It’s about the fellowship and the fulfillment of God’s plan for us here on earth. We all participate in this glorious relationship that is church together through the good and the bad.

4. God is still with us. See number 1. So I leave you this summer to ponder the same things that I have been pondering. We serve an awesome God who walks with us and calls us into relationship and community. Praise be to God!! God bless you, your family, and your friends during these exciting days of summer!

Dear Church Family, During these unprecedented times our music ministry is still working hard to provide music for worship and making plans for the future when we all can be back together. This summer I have been providing music for our parking lot services and have had some soloists present special music. I have also been leading singers to provide music for online worship.

July 19 the Praise Band returned to outdoor worship. After we are able to resume indoor sanctuary worship we plan to have special music provided by a mixture of soloists and small ensembles. Health and Safety is my number one priority with everything we do in the music department. I thank you for your continued support of our music ministry and the staff at Asbury during these challenging times. I will keep everybody posted as things progress in the coming months. All Best, Dr. Michael Stefanek Director of Music Ministries

I trust you are doing well and staying healthy during this extended situation we find ourselves in. Like you, I’m praying God will clear this out so we can get back to some sense of “normalcy”. As you can see from the January-June 2020 finance chart we ended June with a net of $145,929. Included in this number are proceeds of $94,983.33 from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan which we received in April that has reduced our expenses of payroll and utility costs. All funds from the PPP have been depleted as of the end of June. We will complete a forgiveness loan application as soon as our bank has it available. The PPP also helped to fund related expenses to ACDC - $55,670.92 and the Opportunity Shop -$3,745.75.

It has been encouraging to know that so many of you continue to remain faithful in your giving, as the levels of giving have remained steady through all of this. Please know that we do not take your giving for granted. II Corinthians 9:7 in the Amplified Version says this; “Let each one give [thoughtfully and with purpose] just as he has decided in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver [and delights in the one whose heart is in his gift].” Blessings in Christ, Janice Ilczuk Director of Finance & Building Reminder of ways of giving include: ~ Mail your offering directly to the church: Asbury UMC 1401 Camden Ave Salisbury MD 21801 ~Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) – Simply complete an EFT Authorization Form and Janice will set the transfer up for you. Who is on first? What is on second? I don’t know is on third? This was a baseball comedy routine performed in the early 1900’s by William “Bud” Abbott and Lou Costello. This skit involved a conversation between two individuals based on the premise that one person is stating a response while the other believes it is a question. This skit goes on for a while eventually discussing every field position in baseball with different questions/responses. It becomes increasingly frustrating for the individuals in the skit, but it does create quite a bit of humor. I enjoy the skit, but I believe we at Asbury UMC know who is at each baseball position. We have the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit at each position on the field. They are also in the dugout, stands, parking lot, highways, homes, towns (well, you get the idea). While the world is dealing with COVID-19 (death/illness/lost jobs/reduced incomes/shuttered businesses/etc.), I do take comfort in knowing that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have all the bases covered. With the current COVID-19 situation, it seems like we have so many questions along with so many vastly different answers. At times, it seems like the questions and answers are becoming blurred as in the “Who’s on First?” skit. I know Reverend Pasmore preached about resiliency and hope over the past several weeks. I would like to thank the Asbury family for the resiliency and hope they have shown over the past several months. Whether it be from on-line services, gathering together in the parking lot for worship, or community outreach, Asbury has shown the love of Christ. The finance committee has seen those same characteristics in your generosity. We’ve seen continued faithful giving in some rather challenging times. Thank you for your continued financial contributions. God bless and stay safe. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

Sincerely,

Brian Lewis Finance Committee Member

Rev. Genevieve Jones Brown, a native of Somerset County, grew up in a small community, Chance, Maryland. She is the daughter of the late Ella Jones Winder and the late Jewett Benjamin Jones. Rev. Brown is the widow of the late Spencer J. Brown and the mother of two sons, Terrance (Deceases) and Devin Brown of Salisbury, MD and one daughter, Jewlett Brown-Lewis (Javon) of Columbia, MD. Rev. Brown is also a grandmother and a great grandmother of two girls. “Through my love and compassion of family and friends, I pursued a career in teaching on the secondary level in Dorchester County for 30 years. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Science Degree from Maryland State College (University of Maryland, Eastern Shore) in Princess Anne, MD.

I was ordained a full elder of the Peninsula Delaware Conference of the United Methodist Church on June 9, 2007 during the Annual Pennisula -Delaware Conference. I am also affiliated with the walk of Emmaus. I strongly encourage following the Lord. “I am the light of the world. Bible 101 The Bible 101 Class completed their Study of The Gospel of Matthew this spring via Zoom, and held its final class in the Disciples’ Garden Area. We will begin a study of the Book of Job in the fall. Why do bad things happen to good people? Job is a man who endures many hardships, but he never turns against God. The Book of Job is classified as a Part of the Wisdom Literature in the Holy Bible. The other books are Psalms, Proverbs, and Solomon’s Song of Songs.

We are looking forward to our first Study of a Book of Poetry in the category of Wisdom Literature.

The Bible 101 class includes people from varied walks of life, ages from mid-20’s to mid-80’s. Some are still involved in their chosen careers, and some retired. Come join us, for a virtual class, if necessary, in a normal class setting in the Fall. More details will follow.

Complete, but not finished I am sure that the One who began a good work in you will carry it on until it is completed. That will be on the day Christ Jesus returns." -Philippians 1:6

The pandemic of 2020 has led to the cancellation of many important ministries and services, including the Appalachia Service Project’s summer program. Locally, the Chesapeake Housing Mission has found itself with a growing backlog of needy families that they have been unable to serve due to the absence of volunteer groups. God placed your Asbury Service Project team in the midst of this juxtaposition of the inability to travel to Appalachia and unprecedented local need, providing us with an opportunity to serve. During the hottest week of the summer, July 20-24, your ASP mission group assembled four teams to construct wheelchair ramps and perform needed upgrades and repairs for some of the most needy in our community. Over the course of the week, God empowered us to give freedom to 10 people; freedom to enter and leave their homes. A few examples: A World War II veteran now has a ramp that allows him to return home from rehab. A 90 year old woman can now enter and exit her home without relying on her 70+ year

old daughters to carry her up and down the steps. A walker bound gentleman can now safely enter and exit his home without fear of falling

down the steps. A permanently disabled 68 year old

gentleman is able to attend his grandson’s baseball game because his wife no longer has to call an ambulance to remove him from their home.

God has shown us that He will make a way for his faithful servants to do His work. We are blessed.

Blessings,

Leah Taylor, Director of Youth & Family

On June 28, 2020, we finally celebrated our High School Seniors. I shared a short message and that can be related not just to high school students but anyone, especially if you are going through a change in your life. Here is my short message to all grads. Five points to take with you as you head off to college in the fall: Point 1: Faith—Have Faith in God in everything you do. Lean on him during this new time. Find that faith community. Find friends that you can talk to, that will help you grow in your faith walk with God. Point 2: True—Stay true to who you are, who God created you to be as a child of God. Don’t let the people around you change that. Point 3: Questions—don’t be afraid to ask questions. You are starting a new adventure. It is okay to ask even if they told you during orientation or the first day or class. Someone else might have the same question. So step up and ask questions. Point 4: Rest—it is important to rest. I know you will want to try every club and work hard in school, but remember to take time for yourself. To take time in God’s word. God rested on the 7th day. Point 5: Love—Love the people around you, not always the easiest thing at times, but the most important one. To Love like Christ loved and to love your neighbor as yourself.

Once you take all five of these points and put them together it creates a star. You are a star. It might sound cheesy, which I love cheesy, but you are God’s star. So go out to this new part of life and shine bright for God. Remember: Faith, True, Questions, Rest and Love and having Jesus as the center. Recent youth event: We were able to finish the rest of confirmation class through Zoom, allowing us to finally have our confirmation service on Sunday, July 26. This year Jordan Dillard, Sammy Pasmore, and Jerry James were confirmed. Way to go boys! Upcoming event: This has been quite a spr ing and summer. Slowly things are turning back around. God is getting us through this. I would love to do an outdoors bible study, either in the garden or using our new outdoor classroom. I mark my calendar for Thursday, August 20, 2020, from 10:30-11:30am. This is for grades 6-12. Hope to see you there! If we use the outdoor classroom, there are few benches to sit on, but because of social distancing, please bring your own lawn chair as well as a mask. Times are different, but it is good to be in God’s word together.

Sincerely,

Care Ministry is Still Here for You!

Although the Wednesday Prayer Group has not been able to meet in person the past few months, our dedicated group stays updated on prayer requests received via email, phone call, or prayer request slips from the parking lot services. We continue to lift up all of those requests from home each week. In addition, beautiful hand-made cards are provided by talented church members and are available for staff to use to send notes of encouragement and support. If you would like to submit a prayer request, contact the church office at (410)-749-2131, or email Heather at [email protected].

[Cont’d on next page]

Dear faith family, I am currently in the midst of a 3 year program in Spiritual Formation through the Renovare Institute. There are books and articles a-plenty, and of course what program would be complete without papers to write!? Monthly, we engage in academic and praxis discussions online, as well as meeting (via zoom of course) with our small groups. I would like to share my answer to June’s academic questions (keep in mind there is a 400 word limit to these discussions—how restricting!): How would you respond if asked to explain why Christian spiritual disciplines are important to the process of Christian spiritual formation? And for extra credit: How is all this not just some form of works-righteousness? The classical spiritual disciplines are absolutely integral to Christian spiritual formation! Each one plays its own part in the transformation of the heart. The disciplines make space for God to work in us. We do not transform—only God can do that. However, we do need to cooperate and open ourselves to God’s work within us. Our hearts are the target of this (ongoing) transformation to Christlikeness. The disciplines are not simply a matter of behavior modification. I love the analogy of someone carrying a cup of coffee, which spills when someone bumps their arm. Why did coffee spill out? Because there was coffee in the cup. If it had been tea, tea would have spilled out. Whatever is in our hearts will spill out of us (in words and actions) when life “bumps” us—in times of stress and hardship. Practicing spiritual disciplines allows us to train or cultivate our “spiritual muscles” so that in those times of distress, we can respond in a godly way. If we aren’t practicing the spiritual disciplines—how can we grow? How can we be challenged? How can we know God on an intimate level? I would say, we can’t. If one is not practicing at least some of the spiritual disciplines, they may be Christian in name only. This is one of the greatest challenges in our congregations today. Christ is in the name “Christian”—we are to grow into his likeness—as difficult as that is in this life. This is a slow and sometimes painful journey that can begin at any time during a person’s faith walk. Until we make this training, growing, and making space for God a priority in our everyday life, I am afraid that superficiality wins the day. Are the disciplines simply works righteousness? I think Dallas Willard’s quote speaks volumes of truth and wisdom: “Grace is not opposed to effort; it is opposed to earning.

Earning is an attitude. Effort is an action. Grace, you know, does not just have to do with forgiveness of sins alone.” Here, Dallas addresses something that is so misunderstood in much of Church culture. God has work for us to do! As challenging as it is, living a Christian life is not about our convenience, comfort, or requests. It is about making Jesus Christ the Lord of our life, which in turn affects our hearts, thoughts, words, and actions in a journey to Christlikeness in love.

Puppets Looking for a Few Good Arms!

Have you longed for the thrill of the stage? Yearned for the excitement of performing?... travel?... the challenge of working with your hands while down on your knees? If so, Puppets for Christ would like to give you the opportunity to satisfy those longings and yearnings. Due to the circumstances, we are not sure what the fall holds so there isn’t a puppet orientation meeting scheduled at this time. However, the leaders of Puppets for Christ would love to know who might be interested in joining us as soon as we are able to begin. Knowing the number of puppeteers will help us develop a plan to reconstruct our practices to make it safe for everyone involved. Middle and Senior High youth----don’t let this opportunity pass you by! Beginning puppeteers must be in the sixth grade or higher. You’ve always wanted to be a puppeteer, so what are you waiting for? Contact Amy Cropper at 410-726-2847 or email to [email protected] if you are interested. As soon as we are able, we will update our start time and have a plan in place to proceed with caution.

Coming Wednesday evenings this fall:

“Let’s Get Real and Learn About Racism: Part 1” Come and participate in a comprehensive curriculum of history, personal testimony, awareness, and action as we acknowledge, listen, learn, share, plan and pray together as Christ’s representatives in the world. All are welcome. As of this writing, we are expecting to be able to have a limited number of in person participants and zoom will also be an option. Please contact Kristen to RSVP your preference [email protected] or 410-749-2131. Also watch for:

Summer Heats Up As most of us are looking for a place to stay cool and hydrated from the 90-degree days we’ve been experiencing it’s time to plan ahead for what’s next. So far during 2020 we experienced the onset of the Coronavirus. With that came the shortages of some meats, milk, disinfectants and face masks. Some major cities have seen a spike in homicides, vandalism and rioting. So where do we go from here? As this article is being prepared the Tropical Storm/Hurricane season has begun to become active. While the last major storm for the Delmarva Peninsula was Hurricane Sandy in 2012 we sometimes become complacent in preparing for hurricane season each year. Here are some preparedness tips to help you be ready. Now: Have trees trimmed to avoid branches falling on rooves or hitting windows. Prepare a plan if you are instructed by emergency officials to evacuate. Each MD county’s Emergency Management Office has evacuation zone maps on their

website. Find your county’s map to see what zone you are. Pick up a case of water and some non-perishable food the next time you go to the grocery

store. Keep tuned to local TV and radio to stay updated on the storm’s location. 24-36 hours ahead of the storm: Make sure all wireless devices, especially cellphones, are fully charged. Flashlights and radios should have fresh batteries. Remove all deck/porch furniture that could become projectiles. Fuel your vehicles in case you have to evacuate.

Each county Emergency Management Office has storm preparation tips listed on their

websites. For more information you can contact them or Asbury Safety and Security

KID’S CAFÉ SCHOOL CLOTHING PROJECT 2020

The Kid’s Café School Clothing Project is a way for our Kid’s Café program to supply school clothes and supplies for the children in our program. At Salisbury Urban Ministries, we would like to focus on the basic needs of our children. This project is similar to the Angel Tree but due to the COVID restrictions this year, there will not be a bulletin board or tags. Instead,

purchase an item from the list, or make a monetary donation. Please return items back to the collection point by AUGUST 16TH 2020. These items will be handed out to the children in time for the start of school. The monetary donations will help purchase school clothing and supplies throughout the year. Questions, contact us at 410-749-1563 or [email protected]. Thank you for your

continued support of the children God has called us to serve.

On behalf of the Altar Guild, I would like to recognize and thank three of our recently graduated seniors for their service to Asbury as acolytes and crucifers. They are: Joy Bradshaw, Lydia Bradshaw and Colleen Sullivan. We are grateful for their faithful participation in our worship service, and we wish many blessings on them in the coming years. We will miss you next year! Brenda Martin

ASBURY NEWS

Please note upcoming CHURCH OFFICE CLOSINGS: Closed Fridays thru September 4 Monday, September 7 in observance of Labor Day

Asbury is now on AmazonSmile! What is AmazonSmile? This is a website operated by Amazon that lets customers enjoy the same wide selection of

products as on Amazon.com. The difference is that when you shop at smile.amazon.com, the AmazonSmile Foundation donates 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to a charitable organization, such as Asbury. There are no fees to you, the customer, or to Asbury to participate. It is the same shopping experience as Amazon.com with the added benefit of the

Foundation donating to the charity you select. This is a zero-cost way to support Asbury.

We have been given a unique charity link that will take you directly to smile.amazon.com and

automatically selects Asbury as the charity recipient so that you do not have to search for us on their site. Our direct link is:

https://smile.amazon.com/ch/52-0607975

Our link is on our web page –asburyweb.org-on the left side of the home page, click on “Give Here” and it will take you directly to AmazonSmile. The link has also been posted on our Facebook page. You may want to bookmark Asbury’s individual link, because purchases need to always be done on our unique link on AmazonSmile to receive the donation. It does not currently work on Amazon’s app.

We know there are many of us that order from Amazon –especially during this Global Pandemic. I know my household must be on first names with the delivery people –seems like

an Amazon box comes to our house every other day! Why not support Asbury as a charitable recipient when you place your order – you do not have to do anything different other than use the above link when ordering. Thank you in advance for this unique way to support Asbury!
