“They say the old gods dipped a coral blade into the ocean, and when they pulled it out……..

four perfect drops fell back into the sea, and those drops became the islands of Japan……

The samurai (the one who serves) were originally “rented guards” in the service of the Emperor or gentlefolk. But slowly they obtained enough power to overthrow the existing and created their own power structure. These clans (families) obtained more and more power and property, and they gathered around the Toryo (Leader) This leader usually was a distant relative of the shogun or bloodline

The 4 main families were the Fujiwara clan, the Minamoto clan, the Tachibana clan and the Taira clan. These four families were in fact the 'Leaders' of Japan.

As the power of these four families kept growing, the first major conflicts were a fact…..

Samurai – Tijdperk Heian Period ( 794 - 1185 ) The Samurai rise as a military elite under the command of the Emperor.

Kamakura Periode ( 1186 - 1332 ) 1192 Minamoto Yoritomo becomes Shogun.

Muromachi Period ( 1333 - 1572 ) 1338 Ashikaga Takauji becomes Shogun.1543 Portugezen introduce the shotgun in Japan.

Momoyama Period ( 1573 - 1602 ) 1600 The battle of Sekigahara.1600 The Dutch ship “De liefde” arrived at the coast of Japan.

Edo Period ( 1603 - 1867 )1641The Dutch VOC takes post at the artificial island of Deshima.1867 The power of the Emperor was restored, which means the end of the Samurai.

The Art of War

The Art of War is a unique interactive exhibition of one of the most special elements of the Japanese culture. The aim of the project is to show the Japanese world seen through the eyes of a Samurai, they were brave fighters, refined poets and inspiring artists. But above all prepared to give their lives for higher ideals.

The foundation of this unique way of life is the philosophy: bushidō. The exhibition shows a unique collection weapons and attributes of the Samurai, including artworks, their philosophy of life, demonstrations, tea ceremonies, master classes of ikebana, origami, calligraphy, interactive content and much more …
