lighting earthen lamps than the electric lamps.

Seva Times Team lDhamtri (Chattisgarh)

During the Diwali festival the local Art Of Living family took a step towards bringing awareness and empathy to the Potters community at large in India,

they promoted and brought a w a r e n e s s among the local people to light only e a r t h e r n lamps this f e s t i v a l

season. This is a move to support the poor potters, preserve our tradition of lighting earthern lamps and to discourage not so

good quality imported electrical lamps. In lieu with Gurudev’s vision of “Swadeshi “our volunteers and teachers took a step towards this and bought 10000 earthen lamps from the potters and distributed it to the locals. This was a gesture to encourage the potters and bring happiness in their

lives during Diwali festival, due to the trend change of using electrical lights

Earthen lamps promoted and happiness of potters restored

Plastic is a kind of product that does not dissolve naturaly in the mud as it is a tough material that cannot be disposed off just like other biodegradable products. If it is left in the mud then it has the capacity to stop recharging of water. In order to improve the quality of plastic products so that they are able to dissolve, certain synthetic products and colours are added to them which are harmful to the health of the people.

Keeping all these facts in mind The Art of Living International Centre at Bangalore, installed the pyrolysis plant for the disposal of plastic to produce oil or fuel. In this plant, around 200 kg plastic

can be put. This plant was established on

13 May 2015. Much fuel is not needed to run the plant as it uses the gas that is the by-product. This pyrolysis plant is functional and plastic from nearby villages is collected and is being disposed in it.

During the year 2013 – 2014, 1.1 crore ton of plastic was used. According to a survey, 60 major cities of India dispose 3501 ton of plastic waste. Green plastic bags are swallowed by cattle that mistake it for fodder and die and the plastic bags that do not degenerate for years, keep lying on the surface of the ground and are a big hindrance to the recharge of ground water.

Art of Living preparing fuel similar to Diesel from plastic

Upto 200 litres fuel can be obtained from 200 kg plastic

is converted into 100 to

plant decomposes 2 to 2.5 ton of plastic monthly

This process is called pyrolysis. In this process products containing carbon undergo treatment under very high temperature and thermal breakdown takes place due to the shortage of oxygen. 200 kg plastic is converted into 100 to 200 litres of oil or fuel.

This fuel is equivalent to diesel in its calorific details. The gas that is generated in this process runs this plant. During the process, plastic is cut into small pieces. In this plant different kinds of plastic can be treated but used plastic is preferred.

Here it is cooled by the water of the cooling tower. This cooled steam is condensed and accumulated in a gas tank. The heavy oil that is produced is also filtered and kept in an oil tank. This oil is used in boilers, generators, etc.

There is a reactor in the pyrolysis plant that decomposes 2 to 2.5 ton of plastic. The temp. is supervised by a special panel. Once steam starts forming then it passes through a drum. When the carbon from heavy products settles down then the steam passes through a condenser.

Launches South Asian Forum for Peace

Seva Times Team l Jammu

The Art of Living, founded by the humanitarian and spiritual leader, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, brought together multiple stakeholders including ex-militants, families of victims of militancy, youth leaders, women, entrepreneurs, parents bodies, select Kashmiri NGOs, Sufi leaders, academicians, media, persons in art and culture, representatives of the Sikh community and dissenters including those who resorted to stone pelting to deliberate and have a dialogue on the situation in Kashmir as part of the ‘Kashmir Back to Paradise’ Conference. It is for the first time in recent months that such a diverse and large representation of stakeholders from Jammu and Kashmir came together for a dialogue on peaceful and prosperous Kashmir.

"Many of you have traveled 12 and 15 hours to get here because you are deeply pained

by what has happened in the recent months," said Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, addressing this august gathering of Kashmiri stakeholders. “I have not come here with a ready-made solution. We will all have to come together, sit together and bring out a solution. Solutions cannot be found in the streets, not with stones and guns."

As the way forward, the South Asian Forum for Peace was launched. The Forum would span eight South Asian countries to bring them together, to co-operate and work in areas such as entrepreneurship, skill development, cultural exchange, educational partnerships and women empowerment initiatives among others. This is not the first time that Gurudev has been involved in resolving geo-political conflicts. Gurudev was successful by using his good offices in bringing a five decade old civil war in Colombia to an end. For this, Gurudev was awarded the highest Colombian civilian award. His role in promoting the Gandhian principles of non-violence paid off.

Mandir in Janravvadi of Sangli district in Maharashtra. There are not enough schools in and around this place to impart education to children. The Gyan Mandir is doing a commendable task by providing education to the underprivileged children of that area. Sangita is a role model in herself, inspite of the hardships in her life she emerged out of those situations and dedicated her life to be of service to mankind. She had always been very influenced by her father’s teachings and his principles and was totally shattered when she lost her father in 1999 and at that point in her life, she learnt and practiced the Sudarshan kriya and benefitted out of it immensely, this brought a lot of transformation in her life

and then she went on to become a trained faculty and decided to dedicate her life to be of service and spread happiness by conducting yoga and meditation programs.

She has been an inspiration to so many by her dedication. She takes care of 200 children in the Sri Sri Gyan Mandir and they planted 3000 saplings in the school campus.

The Art of Living has offered to rebuild 27 schools burnt in Kashmir to save the education of over 4,500 students of the Valley. It was disclosed in an interview by Sanjay Kumar, who has hosted a conference “Kashmir: Back to Paradise” held by the Art of Living here.n What all ground activities are

you going to initiate in Kashmir?Earlier, the Art of Living interventions in J&K have spanned four broad areas: Trauma-relief programs for all sections of society;

bringing a sense of harmony by facilitating dialogue between people of diverse viewpoints; working to alleviate the plight of people in migrant camps; and initiating youth leadership programs, addressing the issues of youth caught in the web of militancy or affected by it.

We will continue this program. Besides, the recent escalation of unrest in the Kashmir valley since July 2016 had unfortunate fallout - burning down of 27 educational institutions by miscreants. The arson has affected more than 4,500 students, evoking strong condemnation from parents, educationists, traders and

mainstream civil society. In the light of this painful incident, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has offered to rebuild the 27 schools burnt down in Kashmir. Many people have responded with a willingness to support this initiative.n Do you think by creating

a common platform for diverse stakeholders to share their views on the current situation of unrest and some developmental activities, such as constructing school buildings etc., they will come up with a lasting solution without political willingness?

The stakeholders are mentioned

just above this. One thing to understand here is that there is no ethnic unrest here. Kashmiris are one people, whether they are from the Pandit community or from the Muslim community. The purpose of this conference is to involve all of them, including politicians, to bring in a lasting solution, including rebuilding of schools. Once peace regains its place in the Valley, terrorism will stop. Because the people of Kashmir will say no to this, they will stand up to say no.n What are your plans to uplift

the socio-economic status of the vulnerable Kashmiris and

establish peace in the breeding ground of cross-border terrorism?

Education and awareness are the primary goals of bringing people together at this conference. Rebuilding of schools is another area of bringing them together. People are fed up of violence. Business is suffering. Once they all come together, peace and development will become a reality. Without peace, there is no development. Please remember this. Look Kashmir is not a breeding ground for terrorism. It is run by vested interests.
