When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look to see him there, who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free, for God, the Just, is satisfied to look on him and pardon me,

Behold him there! the risen Lamb, my perfect, spotless Righteousness, the great unchangeable I Am, the King of glory and of grace.

CALL TO CONFESSION OF SIN • Psalm 130:3-4 If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.

CONFESSION OF SIN We confess, our Father, that we do not live up to the family name. We are more ready to resent than to forgive, more ready to manipulate than to serve, more ready to fear than to love, more ready to keep our distance than to welcome, more ready to compete than to help. At the root of this behavior is mistrust. We do not love one another as we should, because we do not believe that you love us as you do. Forgive us our cold unbelief. And make more vivid to us the meaning and depth of your love at the cross. Show us what it cost you to give up your Son that we might become your sons and daughters. We ask this in the name of Jesus our righteousness. Amen.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, *

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the †

When the Creed states that Jesus “descended into hell,” we understand it to mean that he suffered the *
