In selecting glass for commercial use, consideration is given to material composition, the manufacturing process, design and shape. Specific production processes, including the addition of special ingredients, improved production techniques, and “tempering” will provide the glass with a commercial feature. Our glass bag is made up of Good, Better and Best standards. GOOD Soda-Lime glass is our basic no-frills offer, named after Sodium Carbonate (Soda), and Calcium Oxide (Lime) which are two of the principal materials added to Silica (molten sand) to produce this glass type. BETTER This glassware is toughened; mostly the whole glass, or sometimes just the most vulnerable areas: the rim and/or foot. This toughening process actually pre- stresses the glass, making it resistant to breakage or chipping caused by mechanical shock (crashing & bashing), or thermal shock (severe temperature change, e.g., when “hit” with hot water while cold, or filled with a cold drink when hot). It works by spreading the stress at the point of impact to the other tempered points of the glass to absorb the shock. However, tempered glass has a limited life—the glass is weakened every time it’s shocked. It has a memory, and over time the stress builds up to a point when it shatters—often in the dishwasher. To minimise loss by thermal shock, the best solution is to allow glasses to return to ambient temperature before they are next used or washed. BEST Our “Best” standard is the result of new glass technology designed to improve glass quality, such as Krysta from Arc, or Luxion from RCR. One such innovation is Crystal Glass, where specific metals (such as Barium and Potassium) are added to improve durability (resistance to stem twisting, rim chipping, mechanical and thermal shock), improve clarity and brilliance, provide total transparency, and resist dishwasher chemicals. By increasing the strength of the glass, the thickness of the side walls can be also be reduced. And generally the rims of this quality glassware are “cold cut” to remove the rim bead to allow a free flow of the liquid onto the tongue. In selecting glass for commercial use, consideration
is given to material composition, the manufacturing
process, design and shape. Specific production
processes, including the addition of special
ingredients, improved production techniques, and
“tempering” will provide the glass with a commercial
feature.
Our glass bag is made up of Good, Better and Best standards.
GOODSoda-Lime glass is our basic no-frills offer, named after
Sodium Carbonate (Soda), and Calcium Oxide (Lime)
which are two of the principal materials added to Silica
(molten sand) to produce this glass type.
BETTERThis glassware is toughened; mostly the whole glass,
or sometimes just the most vulnerable areas: the rim
and/or foot. This toughening process actually pre-
stresses the glass, making it resistant to breakage
or chipping caused by mechanical shock (crashing
& bashing), or thermal shock (severe temperature
change, e.g., when “hit” with hot water while cold,
or filled with a cold drink when hot). It works by
spreading the stress at the point of impact to the other
tempered points of the glass to absorb the shock.
However, tempered glass has a limited life—the glass
is weakened every time it’s shocked. It has a memory,
and over time the stress builds up to a point when it
shatters—often in the dishwasher. To minimise loss by
thermal shock, the best solution is to allow glasses to
return to ambient temperature before they are next
used or washed.
