HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

The Anvil, Issue 254, is the monthly newsletter of

the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The

International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms

and phrases from Star Trek are owned by

Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of

Paramount Communications and all rights are

reserved.

Greetings, This is the month when you can dress up in your favorite costume and not be considered weird. My dream is one day

to own a maroon monster (Star Trek II, Star Trek III, etc. uniform) and a Klingon uniform. I just don’t have the necessary abilities to do that. One of these days I will have the money that I can pay someone to make it for me. So the question is what do you like to dress up as: Star Trek, Star Wars, Comic book character or the old standards of a skeleton, witch, vampire, etc? Do you change every year or do you have a regular costume? If you send in some of you answers, or pictures I will publish them in next months Anvil.

If you want to do something different for the month of October you might plan a vacation to Orlando because both Disney and Universal have Halloween activities that you come dressed in costumes. If you want something closer to home then go over to Kingdom Comics on Oct 31 for goodies and costume prize giveaways.

If you have any topics of interest you would like to see in the newsletter send your articles or updates to [email protected].

As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]

Fall is here with all the beautiful colors and the slightly cooler weather. I read a very interesting item about the colors of the leaves this time of year. It was in an essay in the flyer my church sends each week, and it was written by Timothy Merrill. The condensed version goes like this: we are used to the green on the leaves turning to beautiful reds, yellows and golds of autumn. But according to botanists these colors are the true colors of the leaves. They are green in summer because they are full of chlorophyll they need for photosynthesis to stay alive. When the cool weather of fall comes the chlorophyll drains out of the leaves and we see their true colors. Mr. Merrill does not give a source for this idea and I have not taken the time to research it. Yet I thought it was interesting. With fall my thoughts turn to our next major social, the Fall Feast. Again, Pete and Sue and the girls will be our hosts for the event. We will have turkey and all the trimmings plus sides. Drinks and snacks will be furnished. However, if you want to bring your own snacks, drinks, or sides feel free to do so. And the usual games will be held: Texas Hold’Em, Dalmuti, and the popular Ferengi Take Away. Pete will be posting information soon on the web site. Mark your calendar for November 10 and join us for a great time. We are nearing the time for elections for Second Officer and the Executive Committee so be thinking who you believe would be an asset to the ship in those positions. That’s all this month. See you at the social.

SSttaarr TTrreekk NNeewwss William Windom Passing

We wish to pay our respects to the passing of .William Windom. William Windom is best known in Star

Trek circles as Commander Matt Decker from the episode The Doomsday Machine. He is better known as Dr.

Seth Hazlitt in the Series “Murder She Wrote”. These are just a two of the many rolls Mr. Windom played on

stage, screen, and TV. Mr. Windom passed on August 16, 2012 at the age of 88.

Haynes Publishing to Release Klingon Bird of Prey Manual

Haynes Publishing following in the footsteps of the U.S.S. Enterprise Owner’s Workshop Manual will

be bringing out the Klingon Bird of Prey Owner’s Workshop Manual. This book which will be published in

November will feature CGI renders, cutaways and other diagrams that detail the assorted model and key technologies,

such as adjustable wings and cloaking devices. Further, a history of operational roles is embedded with cleverly

interwoven technical data. If you have not seen the U.S.S. Enterprise Manual then you need to go to your local bookstore

and get one. Also for our Star Wars fan there is Millennium Falcon one as well.

Perception Changed on the Series Enterprise.

A new poll byStarTrek.com shows that 59% of the people liked Enterprise more verse 35% who liked it about the

same and 7% who liked it less. Comments ranged from it had potential, the studio need to give it more time and the

studio needs to learn about the loyalty of Star Trek fans.

Paramount Theme Park to Open in England

London Resort Co. Holdings and Paramount are working out a deal that may result in a Paramount theme Park

out side of London. In the deal are such films as Mission: Impossible, Paranormal Activity and Star Trek. Transformers

is not one since it is owned by Hasbro. They hope to open the park in 2018.
