priority for our families. especially in these difficult economic times, last year’s record enrollment and record fundraising showed a strength of commitment to education that is not seen in many school communities.

I think I can speak for the entire facul-ty and staff when I say that we are all very pleased to be a part of a school that has such wonderful students and families in our community!

Letter from the Director

As I reflect on the tremendous success The new School experienced in the past school year, I am grateful for the outstand-ing group of students, families and teachers that we have here in our school community. From the “freshman class” of two year olds who came through our doors for their first school experience to the senior class of 7th graders who graduated with impressive aca-demic honors, we were blessed with won-derful students. We have the type of stu-dents who inspire our teachers and staff to give them the very best possible education, and we have the caliber of teachers who are able to do just that!

With families from 42 different states and 25 different countries, our diverse little community is a wonderful place for all of us to learn about one another and to come to understand and value our differences. our Culture Fair last May not only highlighted the many different cultures represented in our student body, but it also honored all our different customs and traditions.

The one tradition that appears to be common among all our families is the value they place on education. The unbelievable amount of support that our parents offered last year through the Annual Fund, the Chil-dren’s Run, la Fiesta and all the other fund-raising activities, as well as the investment made through their tuition, showed that the care and education of their children is a top

As Board president, and parent of two new School Students, I can assure you that the Board is committed to maintaining the school’s low student-teacher ratio, creating an environment that encourages inquiry and initiative, and supporting and develop-ing the highest quality of professional staff. I am confident that with your continued sup-port, we will have another incredible year.

Updates

Greetings parents & friends. on behalf of the new School’s Board of Directors, I am pleased to present this report on the

new School’s initiatives and accomplish-ments.

The information in this annual report highlights the outstanding successes of our dedicated volunteers, talented faculty, stu-dents, staff, and alumni, and shows the results of their continued engagement throughout our school, region, and state. These results can be witnessed in the increased fundrais-ing success across the school, the creation of new programs and the strengthening of existing programs throughout our campus. As we move forward in strengthening the new School legacy, it is important to re-member that the participation of our fami-lies is integral to the progress and success of our school. Their leadership exemplifies their commitment to the new School and has a great impact on our ability to provide

The New School is Planning for the Future

The new School’s Board and Adminis-tration are taking part in a Strategic plan-ning Workshop Series sponsored by the northwest Arkansas Care Foundation and facilitated by Consultants from iBossWell, which will provide a roadmap as we look toward the future of our school. The plan-ning process is allowing our school’s leaders to make decisions about the priorities for 2011-2016, which will include enhancing the technology programming, providing ad-ditional support and professional develop-ment for our faculty, expanding our facili-

ties and increasing our endowments. To maintain the school’s position as the

leader in innovative education, we must pro-vide students with the latest technology and integrate that technology throughout the curriculum. We are fortunate to have a fac-ulty that is dedicated to keeping up with the latest technology trends in education, and we have committed to continue providing them with the highest quality professional development as they prepare our students to live in a globalized, high-tech society. Addi-tional endowments will be essential to sup-port the low student-teacher ratios, tech-nology upgrades, professional development and salary increases to support the quality of faculty we have come to expect.

The new School has recently complet-ed a feasibility study to gauge the interest of our families and supporters in future campus building projects and supporting endowments, and the finding were very positive. Based on the feedback we received from this study, we are creating a Facilities planning Task Force, considering the chal-lenges and costs regarding the addition of 8th and 9th grades to The new School Cam-pus, and continuing to develop opportuni-ties to maintain connections with past par-ents, grandparents, and board members, as well as alumni. The Board of Directors and Administration are very pleased with the results and are now evaluating the study to determine our school’s next steps.

Strong Scores on Norm-Referenced Tests

each year, The new School administers The Stanford Achievement Test, 10th edi-tion to all students in 1st grade through 7th grade. This test enables us to compare our

students’ academic performance with the performance of other students throughout the region and the country.

As shown below, our students’ perfor-mance greatly exceeded the national average (50th percentile) and compared impressively with the performance of students in other schools in our area.

While we recognize that standard-ized test scores are only one measure of a student’s growth and development, we are proud of the work our students and teach-ers have done to reach this level of academic achievement.

7th Grade Academic Awards

Each year, our Middle School teachers choose to award graduating students who have displayed remarkable ap-titude and enthusiasm in a particular academic subject. The decision is always a difficult one, but these students’ outstanding work earned them special recognition.

Congratulations to our 7th grade New School graduates who were honored at graduation with awards in these seven areas of academic excellence.

7th Grade Graduatesour graduation ceremonies always leave

us feeling a mix of pride in the accomplish-ments of our oldest students, and sadness in seeing them go. new School’s graduating class of 2009-2010 set a new standard for academic achievement as well as creativity and talent in the arts.

Many of these students came to us as toddlers, and over the years we’ve watched as they’ve become scientists, singers, mathe-maticians, musicians, athletes, writers, danc-ers, and great thinkers. Most importantly, we’ve watched each one discover their own unique talents, and we’ve had the privilege of offering them a learning environment in which they could develop these talents to reach their full potential.

We’re sad to see these re-markable young individuals leave, but we’ve been hon-ored to have them as stu-dents, and we’re excited to see the places they’ll go.

each year, our Middle School students spend the first half of the school year designing and execut-ing science experiments to present at the university of Arkansas Science and en-gineering Fair. This year, 13 of our students received awards at the fair. Katherine Magoulick (pictured to the left) received the American

Fisheries Junior Division Special Award for her experiment entitled Holey Ozone.

We’re proud of the emphasis our program places on developing skills in the sciences, and we’re thrilled to see that our students’ dedi-cation to their projects resulted in so many awards.

MathCounts Club, 5th in StateMathCounts club, led by Middle School Math teacher Willard

Keirn, took 5th place at this year’s MathCounts state-wide competi-tion. In the individual student competition, 6th grader Jonah hyman (pictured above on the right) took 12th place out of over 100 com-peting Middle School and Jr. high students.

Dancers Get Medals This year’s Spring Dance Recital dem-

onstrated the growing sophistication of our student dancers and demonstrated the great work done by highly qualified dance instructor, Ms. Amy Kessler, and her com-mitment to excellence.

This year, Amy gave her students the opportunity to participate in a judged solo performance through the American Acad-emy of Ballet “performance Awards” pro-gram. Through this “adjudication” program, each dancer learned a solo piece to perform in front of an audience of parents, peers, and an experienced judge sent from the academy. The judge evaluated the perfor-mances then awarded each dancer a medal and certificate, along with useful advice and encouragement.

new School dancers performed beauti-fully, earning 1 gold medal with distinction, 15 gold medals, 1 silver medal with distinc-tion, and 10 silver medals. We’re proud of all our dance students, and we’re proud to offer such a strong after school dance pro-gram right her on campus.

Basketball Girls Com-pete Nationally: After our 4th and 5th grade girls team completed another undefeated season, many of the players joined a summer team coached by Mr. lee and Mr. nathan. This team won an impres-sive 4th place in a national tournament, proving that our girls rank among some of the best young basketball players in the country.

Gold with Distinction: This year, 7th Grader Ali Webb received a Gold Medal with Dis-tinction from the American Academy of Ballet performance awards.

Unbeatable Basketball Teams Win It All

The success of this year’s basketball teams proved, once again, that new School has some of the best basketball players and coaches around. Both 4th-5th grade girls team and our 6th grade boys team won their tournaments to end perfect undefeated sea-sons. This is the second season in a row in which this 6th grade boys team hasn’t lost a single game!

We’re proud of our excellent student athletes, as well as our excellent staff coaches who, each year, demonstrate that their train-ing and experience in coaching supports our student athletes in their athletic pursuits.

We’re excited for what is sure to be an-other year of great teams at new School.

Field Trips Enhance Curriculum

new School 5th through 7th Grade stu-dents have the unique opportunity to take extended over-night field trips, which greatly enhance our curriculum in science and social studies. These field trips have be-come a tradition at The new School. The students’ experiences on the field trips re-inforce the classroom lessons and inspire a love of learning by providing discovery be-yond the traditional curriculum.

Middle School students take pride in raising a portion of the costs for their field trips through numerous fundraising ac-tivities, such as helping coordinate the gift wrap and Square 1 Art fundraisers, serving pancake breakfasts, and hosting the Athletic Banquet Spaghetti Supper.

7th Grade Trip to Washington DC: In May, our 7th grade students traveled to Washing-ton D.C for the invaluable opportunity to see, in person, many of the aspects of the nation’s capital and history that they have studied. The trip was designed to give them a special time to bond with their classmates just before they graduated from The new School and teach them how to navigate a major city.

6th Grade Trip to Space Camp: new School 6th grade students traveled to the u.S. Space and Rocket Center in huntsville, Alabama and participated in the pathfinder program to reinforce their lessons on Space. This trip gave our students the opportunity to expe-rience the history, present, and future of manned space travel as Astronauts in train-ing.

5th and 7th Grade Trip to ONSC: natural Science lessons, studied by our 5th and 7th Grade students, were correlated with nature conser-vation and appreciation activities provided at The ozark natural Sci-ence Center in huntsville, AR for the students to observe the natural sciences where they actually hap-pen. This field trip offered students an in-depth experience in biology, ecology, geology, and social studies - all while students had fun!

Since graduating from The new School, Adele has thrived academically and artistically. Af-ter graduating from Fayetteville, high School with Distinguished honors, she was accepted to nu-merous colleges including nYu, Wellesley, Smith, but chose to at-tend new College in Florida for it’s non-traditional academic ap-proach. At new College, Adele studied anthropology and music composition, and started playing in her first band as a keyboard player and vocalist.

After college she returned to Fayetteville and began composing music and playing with a band. She soon released a full length album which garnered a nomination at the northwest Arkansas Music Awards for Best new Album. one track from the album was selected for inclusion on a radio sampler and sent out to hundreds of radio stations around the country.

This year, culminating her success in the study of music, Adele was awarded the pres-tigious Fulbright Scholarship to conduct an independent study of female rock musicians in lima, peru. For one year, she will be con-ducting interviews, playing in bands, and seeking to understand the minority experi-ence of female rock musicians in lima.

Children’s Fun Run & La Fiesta Raise Combined $130,000Fundraising events such as The Children’s Fun

Run and la Fiesta are keys to our school’s success. Since tuition and fees do not cover the costs to attend The new School, our fundraising activi-ties support each and every student. every dollar raised is used within our annual operating budget

to enrich the lives of our students in their pursuit of aca-demic, creative, and character develop-ment. The fundrais-ing events also help provide financial as-

sistance for students that enhance the school com-munity with their presence but otherwise might not be able to join the new School family.

With the generous support and amazing in-volvement of our community, the 27th Annual Children’s Fun Run and la Fiesta 2010 raised a combined total of almost $130,000 for The new School.

The Staff Appreci-ation Committee met periodically through-out the school year and planned fundraising activities that directly benefited The new School teachers and staff. These activities included The Fall Bake Sale, holiday Gift Sale, Box Tops Collections, and Campbell Soup label Collections.

The Staff Appreciation Committee used funds from these activities to purchase holi-day gift cards given as end-of-the-year bo-nuses, Flip Video Cameras for classroom use, a constant supply of treats, gourmet coffee and resources for the TlC (Teachers’ learning Center), Spaghetti To-Go Staff

The new School strongly believes in the development of a meaningfully col-laborative relationship between a student’s home and school family. This year, The new School implemented the “Class Contacts” program to foster the clear communication between parents and teachers that is essen-tial, especially in today’s busy households and classrooms.

As the liaison between the teachers and students’ families, Class Contacts initiate and promote the team effort between school and home that The new School strives to maintain.

Endowment Supports the FutureWith generous support from many families, The new School

has experienced a history of sound financial management, has elimi-nated long-term debt and has operated with a balanced budget for several consecutive years. Revenue from the interest of our endow-ments are helping to reduce the school’s dependence on tuition and fees and lead the school toward long-term financial security.

The new School’s endowment was established through a gener-ous contribution from Ms. pat Walker in 2000. Since then it has doubled in size through several additional endowment gifts. As we look forward, the need to grow our endowments will be a prior-ity, specifically to provide future funding to improve our technology programming and increase our faculty support. Watch for more de-tails about future endowments to come in the next school year. Middle School Math Teacher Mr. Willard uses a SmartBoard to teach math.

The Technology Endowment is needed to...Maintain the school’s leadership in innovative technology•

Provide teachers and students with the latest technology•

Integrate technology throughout the curriculum•

Prepare students to live in a globalized, high-tech society•

The Faculty Support Endowment is needed to...Recruit and retain the highest quality of teachers•

Increase salaries and benefits packages•

Maintain our low student/teacher ratios•

Provide top quality professional development•

During the 2009-2010 school year, The new School received $116,380 in dis-bursements from the pau-line l. Whitaker Charitable lead Trust. Funds from this Trust have been used to free the school of remaining land and building debt and to provide faculty support.
