 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was 

betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the 

Holy Spirit.

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a 

public example, was minded to put her away secretly.

20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, 

"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that 

which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

Deuteronomy 22:23-2423 "If a young woman who is a virgin is

betrothed to a husband, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, 24 then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city,

and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did

not cry out in the city, and the man because he humbled his neighbor's wife; so you shall

put away the evil from among you.

 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her 

away secretly.

Numbers 5:11-3111 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

12 "Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: 'If any man's wife goes astray and behaves unfaithfully toward him, 13 and a man lies with her carnally, and it is

hidden from the eyes of her husband, and it is concealed that she has defiled herself, and there was no witness against her, nor

was she caught--

14 if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him and he becomes jealous of his

wife, who has defiled herself; or if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him and

he becomes jealous of his wife, although she has not defiled herself-

15 then the man shall bring his wife to the priest. He shall bring the offering

required for her, one-tenth of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil on it and put no frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering of jealousy, an offering for

remembering, for bringing iniquity to remembrance. 16'And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the

LORD.

17 The priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel, and take some of the dust

that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the water. 18 Then the priest shall

stand the woman before the LORD, uncover the woman's head, and put the offering for

remembering in her hands, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And the priest shall have

in his hand the bitter water that brings a curse.

19 And the priest shall put her under oath, and say to the woman, "If no man

has lain with you, and if you have not gone astray to uncleanness while under your husband's authority, be free from this bitter water that brings a curse. 20 But if you have gone astray while under

your husband's authority, and if you have defiled yourself and some man other than

your husband has lain with you"--

21 then the priest shall put the woman under the oath of the curse, and he shall say to the woman-- "the LORD make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the LORD makes your thigh rot and your belly

swell; 22 and may this water that causes the curse go into your stomach, and make your

belly swell and your thigh rot." Then the woman shall say, "Amen, so be it.”

23'Then the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall scrape them off

into the bitter water. 24 And he shall make the woman drink the bitter water that

brings a curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter her to become bitter.

25 Then the priest shall take the grain offering of jealousy from the

woman's hand, shall wave the offering before the LORD, and bring it to the altar; 26 and the priest shall take a handful of

the offering, as its memorial portion, burn it on the altar, and afterward make the

woman drink the water. 27 When he has made her drink the water, then it shall be,

if she has defiled herself and behaved unfaithfully toward her husband, that the

 water that brings a curse will enter her and become bitter, and her belly will

swell, her thigh will rot, and the woman will become a curse among her people. 28 But if the woman has not defiled herself, and is clean, then she shall be free and

may conceive children. 29'This is the law of jealousy, when a wife, while under her

husband's authority, goes astray and

 defiles herself, 30 or when the spirit of jealousy comes upon a man, and he

becomes jealous of his wife; then he shall stand the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute all this law upon her. 31 Then the man shall be free from iniquity, but that woman shall bear her

guilt.' "

 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, 

"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that 

which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 

 God's Purpose For Angels

 1. Sent To Give MessagesDaniel 6:22

"My God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths, so that they have not hurt me,

because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong

before you."

 2. Sent To Give EncouragementGenesis 16:7-12

7 Now the Angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. 8 And He

said, "Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?"

She said, "I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”

9 The Angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit

yourself under her hand." 10 Then the Angel of the LORD said to her, "I will

multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for

multitude.“ 11 And the Angel of the LORD said to her: "Behold, you are with child,

And you shall bear a son.

 You shall call his name Ishmael, Because the LORD has heard your affliction. 12 He

shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against every man, And every man's hand

against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren."

 3. Sent To Give GuidanceExodus 14:19-20

19 And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them

and stood behind them. 20 So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of

Israel. Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all

that night.

 4. Sent To Carry Out Punishment 2 Samuel 24:10-25

10 And David's heart condemned him after he had numbered the people. So David said to the LORD, "I have sinned greatly in what I have done; but now, I pray, O LORD, take away the iniquity of

Your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”

 11 Now when David arose in the morning, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying, 12

"Go and tell David, 'Thus says the LORD: "I offer you three things; choose one of

them for yourself, that I may do it to you." ' " 13 So Gad came to David and told him; and he said to him, "Shall seven years of

famine come to you in your land?

Or shall you flee three months before your enemies, while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days' plague in your

land? Now consider and see what answer I should take back to Him who sent me.“ 14 And David said to Gad, "I am in great

distress. Please let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”

 15 So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel from the morning till the appointed time. From Dan to Beersheba seventy thousand men of the people died. 16 And when the

angel stretched out His hand over Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD relented

from the destruction, and said to the angel who was destroying the people, "It

is enough; now restrain your hand.”

 And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 17 Then David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel who was striking the people, and said, "Surely I have sinned,

and I have done wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Let Your

hand, I pray, be against me and against my father's house."

  5. Sent To Patrol The EarthZechariah 1:7-11

7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month

Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah the

son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet: 8 I saw by night, and behold, a man riding on a red horse, and it stood

 among the myrtle trees in the hollow; and behind him were horses: red, sorrel, and white. 9 Then I said, "My lord, what are these?" So the angel who talked with me said to me, "I will show you what they are." 10 And the man who stood among

the myrtle trees answered and said, "These are the ones whom the LORD has

sent to walk to and fro throughout the

 earth." 11 So they answered the Angel of the LORD, who stood among the myrtle trees, and said, "We have walked to and fro throughout the earth, and behold, all

the earth is resting quietly."

 6. Sent To Battle The Forces Of Evil 2 Kings 6:8-18

8 Now the king of Syria was making war against Israel; and he consulted with his

servants, saying, "My camp will be in such and such a place." 9 And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, "Beware

that you do not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there.”

 10 Then the king of Israel sent someone to the place of which the man of God had told him. Thus he warned him, and he was watchful there, not just once or twice. 11

Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was greatly troubled by this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, "Will

you not show me which of us is for the king of Israel?”

 12 And one of his servants said, "None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet

who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.“ 13 So he said, "Go and see where he is,

that I may send and get him." And it was told him, saying, "Surely he is in Dothan." 14 Therefore he sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by

night and surrounded the city. 15 And when the servant of the man of God arose

early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him,

"Alas, my master! What shall we do?" 16 So he answered, "Do not fear, for those

who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

 17 And Elisha prayed, and said, "LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." Then the

LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 18 So when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, and said, "Strike this people, I pray, with blindness." And He struck them with blindness according to the

word of Elisha.

 Revelation 20:1-31 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 He laid

hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he cast

him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he

 should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But

after these things he must be released for a little while.

  Hebrews 13:2"Do not forget to entertain strangers, for

by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels."
