The Process – path to self-sufficiency via collaborations and partnerships
Phase I NSF/NSDL #0121518 grant: The Analytical Sciences Digital Library
University of Kansas, Oct. 2000 – Mar. 2004
PI: T. Kuwana Subcontracts to:
Stuart Chalk, U. North Florida, Jacksonville, FL
Cameron Dorey, U. Central Arkansas, Conway, AR
George Long, Indiana U., Indiana, PA ASDL goes online October 2002, adopts a journal operation/organization 2004
Editor-in-chief, Cindy Larive (UCR) Managing Director, T. Kuwana (KU)
Advisory Board, 11 members from industry, govt labs and academics
Associate Editors, 12 from PUI
– Phase II NSF/NSDL #053191 grant: Collaborative project: Assessing the user-base and expanding the usability/reach of ASDL through developmental workshops, Oct. 2004 – Oct. 2008
U. of California, Riverside, CA
PI: C. Larive with Collaborative Grant to U. of Illinois, Urbana, IL
PI at UI: Alex Scheeline, Dept. of Chemistry; Co-PI: Tina Chrzastowski, UI Library
2005 Usability Workshop results in major revision of www.asdlib.org
New online section introduced and organizational bylaws completed.
2006 – partnership proposed, formalized and adopted by ANYL/ACS with new join website,
www.analyticalsciences.org online March 2007 and MOU signed October 2007.
• ANYL: Second largest technical division (as of 2005)
• Membership peak in 2000, then slow but steady decline
• ACS had division membership push in late 1990’s (1998 – 2000)
– Option to join any division free for one year with Society membership
– Other marketing strategies:• Booth at national meetings

How the ASDL & ANYL partnership for website came about -
* Chris Enke, Chair of ANYL, met with Cindy and Ted at 2006 Pittcon Orlando to propose possible ANYL and ASDL partnership in view of pending end of NSF grant support October 2008
• ANYL Executive Committee considers partnership at March 2006 Spring ANYL/ACS meeting in Atlanta, GA
• April 2006 ANYL Exec. Comm. approves proposed partnership
• Cindy Larive submits proposal to NSF/DUE for supplemental funds to support the transitional period to establish the partnership and develop a joint website (approved)
• September 2006 ANYL strategic planning session endorses partnership and established web committee
• New joint website, www.analyticalsciences.org opens in time for February 2007 Pittcon in Chicago
Results of March– Sept 2006 ANYL strategic planning
• Mission & Vision: Improving people’s lives through the transforming power of analytical chemistry and promoting the community of analytical scientists
1. Improve communication among members and the public (website, etc.)
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING ON COOPERATION BETWEENASDL and ANYL/ACS (Division of Analytical Chemistry/American Chemical Society)
Whereas it is understood that a means of ongoing support needs to be developed for the ASDL project,
Whereas it is understood that ASDL represents a tremendous effort in its establishment and uniquely serves a variety of important educational needs of the analytical community.
Whereas it is understood that the Analytical Division seeks to expand its services to its membership and the analytical community at large.
Therefore, the Analytical Division desires to provide a stable home for the operation and enhancement of the ASDL project. In turn, ASDL desired to partner with the Analytical Division in achieving their mutual goals.
7. Annual reports and attendance at ANYL Executive Meetings
8. Effective date of MOU and signatures: ANYL Chair and ASDL Managing Director
