From the President . . .
BEING A VOLUNTEER
Our AMTA Chapter is made
up of VOLUNTEERS. We
have no paid staff or hired
employees. We are all
volunteers who give of our
time and talents to make our
profession better. We work as
a Chapter to improve the perception of massage in
the health field arena and providing information of
the benefits of massage to our communities. In this
way we spread the knowledge on massage therapy.
Volunteering benefits not only our AMTA Chapter
but also us as individuals and the communities in
which we live and work. We form connections with
other professionals that help us grow as individuals
and we are seen as concerned, caring health care
professionals in our communities.
A recent quote from AMTA President Jeff Smoot
puts it this way: “When you volunteer for your
AMTA Chapter, you will not only benefit our
association and our members, but you will grow
personally and professionally. Volunteering can be a
great way to make friends, garner new professional
contacts, and network with members across the state.
As a volunteer, you contribute unique skills,
experiences, and perspective that make you feel
valued. Volunteering is one of the best ways to make
a difference in your community and have a lasting
impact on our profession, while meeting your own
personal and professional goals.”
Please become involved with the AMTA Iowa
Chapter. Plan to attend our Fall Convention this
month in Cedar Rapids. We have a nationally known
presenter who will provide you with techniques that
you can take home and use to benefit your clients
immediately. Volunteering has many, many rewards
for you, your community and your profession. I hope
to see you at our fall convention!
Ken Swenson
President
From the 1st Vice President . . .
Hello everyone! I can’t believe
summer is almost over and fall
is on its way. We all know
what that means — Fall
Convention! I have been busy
working with the hotel to make
sure everything will be ready for
us on September 12th. I have also
been doing site visits to see what
hotel would work to host our conventions. I am very
excited to be hosting James Waslaski at this
convention as he does some amazing work! I am
also looking for presenters so if you have ideas please
let me know. I do take time to read all surveys after
convention and enjoy the feedback.
While getting things ready for fall convention I am
also looking toward the Spring Convention which
will be held at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa.
I am again looking at having three (3) presenters.
I will inform all of you when those are in place.
Hope to see all of you this fall. Have a great rest of
your summer!
Holly Rasmusson
1st Vice President

Hello fellow Iowa massage
therapists! What an awesome
summer this has been! I hope you
have all gotten out to enjoy the
beauty of Iowa!
As Treasurer for the AMTA Iowa
Chapter, I am working as we
transition to the National AMTA
Office managing/housing our accounts. At the chapter level we
will maintain control over our funds (check writing, budgeting,
etc.) and those funds will remain the assets of the Iowa
Chapter. National has determined it to be in the best interest of
all chapters to hold assets in one location. The Iowa
transitional month is August and hopefully by the end of
August or early September this will be complete.
The role as Chapter Treasurer changes slightly with this new
procedure. The responsibilities will continue to include
reviewing all chapter disbursements to third party vendors,
paying reimbursements to member and chapter leaders, check
writing, overseeing the budgeting process and submitting that
in a timely manner each fiscal year and assuring all payments
made by our chapter are in accordance with national by-laws,
national policy, chapter policy and chapter standing rules.
The one major change in the Chapter Treasurer responsibilities
is that the Treasurer will not be entering in each transactions
(debits and credits) into QuickBooks, generating monthly
reconciliation reports, and submitting them on a monthly basis
to the national office. I have to say, I will not miss those
monthly tasks! Rather than enter into QuickBooks, the
Treasurer be reporting weekly to the national office all
transactions that are made on chapter accounts. The national
office staff will then manage the accounts for us entering all
transactions, generating various required reports for the
chapter ,and preparing all documents for tax purposes. The
Chapter President and Treasurer will have the ability to view
all chapter QuickBooks accounts. The Iowa Chapter funds
remain the Iowa Chapter funds!
I am looking forward to seeing you all in September for the
AMTA Iowa Chapter Fall Convention in Cedar Rapids. It
promises to be an outstanding weekend of education,
networking, connecting and celebrating the field of massage
therapy.
See you then!
Yours in health,
Chris Rider, Treasurer
AMTA Iowa Chapter

August is a welcome sight for me. The
kids are going to be heading back to
school soon! Tourism in my area
slows down so I am able to catch my
breath!! We are always super busy
over the summer months, long days
with lots of staff interaction! Fall
Convention is just around the corner!!
Last week I e-mailed the vendors asking for raffle donations
and items for Convention Registration Bags for fall convention.
This week I will be following up with phone calls, and calls to
those vendors I don’t have an e-mail address for. Please
remember the vendors after convention for future orders and
future business.
Next week I’m off to Pittsburg Pennsylvania. The first few
days of the week are CVOP (Chapter Volunteer Orientation
Training). I am very excited to be participating and learning
new things that will help me to be more effective serving the
Chapter. After CVOP, the House of Delegate activities begin
on Wednesday. I look forward to learning the process. Thank
you all for vote to be sent as First Alternate Delegate. On
Thursday the National Convention begins! This is my first
National Convention. I can’t wait for the opportunity to meet
with the National Vendors and determine interest in working
with us at the AMTA-IA Convention, if not in September,
hopefully for future conventions. I’m also anxious for the raffle
to see if I can get any crazy ideas to make it more exciting and
enjoyable!
After National Convention, I will be very busy with entering
mail in registration through the end of this month. The
beginning of September, packages will begin arriving with
raffle prizes and items for the welcome bags for the convention.
The week of the convention, I assemble nametags, information
for the registration folders and stuff bags for Cedar Rapids!!
All most certainly a labor of love!!
As always, please send me any information you may have on
anyone interested in being a vendor. I will be happy to send
them a pack of information. In the meantime! Get your
registration in! James Waslaski is a great presenter. We are
going to learn some awesome techniques!! I hope to see you
there!
Sincerely yours,
Robin Markus

Member Feature ~ What Lights Your Fire?
Subbu Varanasi
Q How long have you been a massage therapist?
A Off and on since 1980. First in India, then in Oman. Then took some time off from
massage therapy. In 2007, I moved to Iowa and got more training. Q Why did you choose the massage therapy profession?
A Since I had background in massage therapy in India and Oman, it was a natural profession for me to choose
here in the United States. I returned to massage school in 2007 and got my license in 2008. Q What type of massage do you specialize in?
A Yes, deep tissue. I also do champi massage, which is a head massage with coconut oil. It helps nourish the
scalp, and gives an entire different feeling. Some clients like the champi massage because they can get the
massage fully-clothed.
Q What do you like most about the massage therapy profession?
A Massage therapy is a very interesting profession. I like that many times clients get instant pain relief. This is
a rewarding profession.
Q Where do you practice massage therapy and in what setting do you operate?
A I have my private practice in Des Moines at 3839 Merle Hay Road. I do massage therapy part-time.
Q What other work occupies your time?
A I also work at a hotel serving breakfast and lunch. I am a translator too, sometimes travelling to translate
and sometimes translating over the phone at odd hours. Q Do you find it challenging in doing marketing for your business since you are part-time?
A Not really. I like talking to people and joke around with them. I also enjoy going to garage sales. Whenever
I'm at a garage sale in my neighborhood, I talk to people there about many things and tell them I'm a massage
therapist and give them a business card and a pen with my business information on it. My practice is very close
to my house so it is convenient for people I meet in the neighborhood to get massages from me.
Q You seem very passionate about massage therapy. What lights your fire?
A I enjoy going to the AMTA Iowa Conventions. I like learning from the presenters and also enjoy interacting
with other massage therapists and learning from them. The publications AMTA sends out are great too and I
get a lot out of the articles.
Q Do you have a spouse or family?
A I married my wife after 6 weeks and we met online in 1999. We are still happily married. We don't have any
children.
Q What are your hobbies?
A Listening to music, especially shock-wave radio. With shock-wave radio, I can tune into foreign stations and
listen to them. Skyping with family all over the world. Driving to small Iowa towns and eating ice cream. Q Does anyone stand out as a mentor?
A Deb Elliott, owner of College of Massage and the Healing Arts Center.
Q Do any funny stories stand out over the years?
A When I first looked at massage schools here in Iowa, I visited one near my home. I liked it. I went back to
India to wrap up some things there and sold many things. I came back to Iowa and went to the school and
handed the owner a brown envelope with the full tuition in it in cash (the school owner was a bit shocked!). Q What advice do you have for a brand-new massage therapist?
A Don't listen to people that tell you "There are so many massage therapists around; you'll never make it."
Many massage therapists graduate from the same school yet come out with their own special talent. Find your
niche and it works! Do you know an AMTA member who has gone above and beyond in education? We would love to interview them for a
future What Lights Your Fire feature! Please contact Keith Kowal at [email protected] or Jill Ellsworth at
