Great Britain• Why do countries
have colonies?
• Used the colonies as a source for raw materials and a market for British goods.−Taxed
Tarring and Feathering a tax collector
French & Indian War (1754-60)
• British gained French territory in North America.
• War costs and defending new territory indebted Britain.
• British Parliament (legislature) taxed the colonies.
Revolutionary War• 1775: Battle of Lexington &
Concord.
• France & Spain joined the Americans.
• 1781: British surrendered at Yorktown.
Early U.S. Gov’t 1783-87• Confederation: loose union of
states with a weak central gov’t.
• Ineffective & soon abandoned.
Constitution 1787• Federal System: Split between
national & state gov’ts.
• Republic: elected leaders.
• Bill of Rights: protecting natural rights.
• Closer to true democracy than most western nations at the time.
