Southern Colonies• Large plantations required a lot of labor• Indentured servant system: servants worked for a

master for a specific period of time (7 yrs) under contract in return for paid passage to the colonies– System failed!

• Turned exclusively to slave labor• Cash crops: crops grown for profit

– Tobacco, rice, indigo, and later cotton

The Middle Colonies• More diverse than Southern

and NE colonies• Not united by a single

New England Colonies• Pilgrims: fled in family units from religious persecution

(Puritans)– Largely intolerant of other religions

• Mayflower Compact: framework for self-government which later influenced the founding of the United States

• Plymouth Colony: colony founded 1620 by Puritans in the north (Massachusetts)

• Boston: major shipping/trading port in northern colonies• Farming and ship building also part of economy
