The America 21 Project seeks to leverage existing assets within Urban American communities to create new opportunities and ensure competitiveness in the Innovation Economy.
Urban Funders The outcome the forum in each region will be the seed development of a group of high net worth individuals willing to invest in the National Urban Innovation Fund and engage in the workshops that will educate them toward becoming an active regional angel investment group. The America 21 Project will provide partners to assist in the development. At the end of year one, there will be at least four urban funders groups.
Urban Founders The outcome the forum in each region will be the seed development of a group that orchestrates networking events, workshops and resources designed for the development of high-growth entrepreneurs. The education, training, mentoring and channeling of high-potential innovators toward deal flow in four urban founders groups is the overall goal in 2012. America 21 will provide resources as needed to bolster regional capability.

Opinion by Rick C. Wade. He is senior vice president at GreenTech Automotive. He was senior adviser and deputy chief of staff to Gary Locke when he was the U.S. secretary of commerce.
“The fact is that over the last three decades, new startups by innovators and entrepreneurs -- companies less than five years old -- have accounted for nearly all newly created jobs in the private sector. The scarcity of these dynamic, fast-growing companies in black communities has contributed to some of the chronic unemployment we see today. “This is a problem that defies easy solutions. We simply can't revitalize overnight communities that have lost thousands of jobs. And new corner stores or barbershops certainly won't make up for the closing of factories. Targeted government programs help, but private-sector investment is critical for sustained community development.”
