The Amazing

Page 3: The Amazing Ribosomes

Ribosomes at first: observed in 1950

by Romanian cell biologist “George

Emil Palade” using an electron

microscope.

Prokaryotic Ribosomes Eukaryotic Ribosomes

• Prokaryotic ribosomes arearound 20 nm (200 Å) indiameter and are composedof 65% rRNA and 35%ribosomal proteins.

Eukaryotic ribosomes arebetween 25 and 30 nm(250– 300 Å) in diameterwith an rRNA to proteinratio that is close to 1.

Also Found in Mitochondria.
