INTRODUCTION

In this era many people didnt know the advantageous of honey bee used for

warning our body.

In fact Allah has said in holy Quran, An Nahl : 69

So from this fact the writer want to show what an amazing honey

bee as the one of a greet natural medicine.

Considering to the research background the writer puts forward

CHAPTER II

HONEY BEE IN AL QURAN AND AS SUNNAH

A. Honey Bee in Al Quran

More than 1400 years ago Allah SWT told us that honey can heal

a variety of medicial problems.

Allah says in the Al Quran:

And the Lord taught the bee to build it cell in hills, on trees, and in

(mens)habitations;(68) Then to eat of all the produce (of the earth) and

find with skill the spacious paths of its Lord: there issues from whithin

their bodies a drink of varying colours, wherein it healing for men: verily

in this is a sign for those who give thought(69).

It mean that in the honey bee colonies each of the many bees is

assigned a specific task, the only exception is the male honey bee. The

males do not contribute to the hive or its cleaning gathering food, or

making the honeycomb znd noney. The only funtion of the male bees in

the hive is to inseminate the queen bee. A part from reproductive

organs, the males possess almost none of the feature possessed by

other bees and it is therefore imposible for them to do anything but

fertilise the queen.

Allah comments us to eat all of the earth produce and find with skill the

spacious path Him. And from honey bees bodies also there a drink of

variying colours. Honey bee has more than 80 materials of sugars

vitamins and is materials of sugar, particulary fructose, glucose,

minerals, aminoacid, and about 5% unclassified material,

Wherein is healing for men its mean, an explicit verse

indicating that honey is a treatment as well as a nutrient.

In Arabic there are two different usages of verbs. By men of the

usages it is possible to determine whether the subject is a female or

male. As a matter of fact. The translated verb into english used for the

honey bee are used in feminine verb format in the Quranic verse.

Based on this, the Quran indicated that the honey bees that

work in the making of the honey are females. We should not forget that

it is impossible for this fact to have been known about the honey bees in

the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Yet Allah has pointed at this fact

and shown us yet another miracle of bee.

B. Honey Bee in As Sunnah

The Prophet Muhammad SAW, has also told us of the healing

found within honey for a variety of medical problem including stomach

ailment. One hadeeth, reported by Bukhory, states that a man came to

the prophet, Muhammad SAW, because his brother had a stomach

disorder. The Prophet said Let him drnk honey The man returned a

second time and again,Let him drink honey The man returned again,

and said I have done that The Prophet then responded,Allah has said

the truth but your brother stomact has told a lie. Let him drink honey

He drank it and was cured.

Thirmidzi, ibnu Majah, and Al Baihaqi also reported that the

Prophet Muhammad SAW said, Make and use of the two remedies:

honey and Al Quran.

Scientific research that is in accordance with sharia has helped us

a lot in understanding some honey issues in much greeter depth. A

hadith points out a tradition that says,if it is used at least thrice in a

month at early morning, the one who uses it will remain save from

diseases.fresh honey is highly beneficial but should not be used with

fish, venegar, radish,or melon. Always store honey in a glass jar that

should not have even a single drop of water, as even a few drops of

water can destroy honeys value.

Even the Prophet Muhammad SAW also commands to drink honey

in the early morning and in the afternoon. The sunnah is bleesing if one

has no doubt. The user achieves two advantages simultane ously: one is

physical, which is a cure and remidies. Quran and honey This hadith is

a forcefull categorical reply to arguments based on the opinion of

medicial experts who disallow honeys use for diabetics. Honey provides

the quitket energy boost for longer endurance without a big drop in

blood sugar later.

CHAPTER III

THE AMAZING HONEY BEE

A. The History of Honey Bee

Apis mellifera L preceded humans on earth by 10 to 20 million

years. Honey bees are one of the oldest forms of animal life still in

existence from the Neolithic Age. Primeval humans gathered and ate the

honey and honeycombs of wild bees, the only available sweet, as far back

as 7000 B.C. Bronze Age societies celebrated preindustrial triumphs by

drinking mead, probably the first intoxicating beverage, fermented from

honey. In fact, the words mead and mellifera (the specific name for honey

bees), which are similar in several languages, were derived from root

words referring to honey bees, liquor, doctored drink etc

Some scientistfic research her states that haoney bee has well

known since ancient culture period a thousand year ago. In Bibel a part of

In the past, beeswax served as a medium of exchange and

taxation; it was exacted as tribute from conquered nations and was used

in writing, painting, sculpturing, and protecting works of art, as well as for

illumination. Honey, beeswax, and propolis (a mixture primarily of plant

resins and beeswax that bees use in nest contruction) have been used

extensively in pharmacopoeia since 2700 B.C. The principal medicinal

value of honey arises from its antibacterial properties when used as a

wound dressing. Honey bees originated in southern Asia, probably in the

region of Afghanistan. The earliest record of humans gathering honey

from wild colonies is from 7000 B.C. Man first kept bees about 3000 to

4000 B.C., perhaps as early as 5000 B.C. There is no way of knowing to

what extent honey bees have evolved since then; we can assume that

some evolution has taken place, particularly with regard to the social

organization of the colony and foraging behavior. Apis mellifem, the most

widely distributed of the species of Apis, is not native to the Americas. The

first record of the introduction of honey bees to the western hemisphere

was in 1530 in South America. It was introduced to North America by

colonists from Holland in 1638. Since bees visit a broad range of host

plants and are able to conserve heat by clustering, they have become

widely dispersed and are now found throughout the world. Honey bees are

limited in their distribution mainly by an absence of suitable forage and/or

less than 19.8 cm (7.8 inches) of rainfall annually. The scientific name,

Apis mellifera, was given the honey bee by Carolus Linnaeus in 1758. It

liter- ally means "the honey-carrying bee " A more descriptive name, A.

mellifica, or "the honey-making bee ' " was proposed in 1761. While this

second name more accurately describes honey bees (which carry nectar

but make honey), the rales governing precedence in scientific

nomenclature dictate that the earlier name be retained. Nevertheless, the

term A. mellifica can still be found in some bee literature.

1 Bee Hive

A beehive is an enclosed structure in which some honey bee

species of the genus live and raise their young. Natural beehives

(typically referred to simply as "nests") are naturally-occurring

structures occupied by honey bee colonies, while domesticated honey

bees live in man-made beehives, often in an apiary. These man-made

structures are typically referred to as "beehives". Only species of the

subgenus Apis live in hives, but only the western honeybee (Apis

mellifera) and the eastern honeybee (Apis cerana) are domesticated by

humans. Wooden hives in Stripeikiai in Lithuania. The beehive's internal

structure is a densely packed matrix of hexagonal cells made of

beeswax, called a honeycomb. The bees use the cells to store food

(honey and pollen), and to house the "brood" (eggs, larvae, and pupae).

a. Natural bees' nests

Honey bees in the subgenus Apis use caves, rock cavities

and hollow trees as natural nesting sites. Members of other

subgenera have exposed aerial combs. The nests are composed

of multiple honeycombs, parallel to each other, with a relatively

uniform beespace. The nest usually has a single entrance.

Western honey bees prefer nest cavities approximately 45 litres

in volume and avoid those smaller than 10 or larger than 100

litres. Western honey bees show several preferences in nest site

properties: the height above ground is usually between 1 metre

(3.3 ft) and 5 metres (16 ft), entrance positions tend to face

downward, south-facing entrances are favored (as described by a

reference from the Northern Hemisphere), and nest sites over

300 metres (980 ft) from the parent colony are preferred. Bees

usually occupy the nests for several years. The bees often

smooth the bark surrounding the hive entrance, and the cavity

walls are coated with a thin layer of hardened plant resin

(propolis). Honeycombs are attached to the walls along the

cavity tops and sides, but small passageways are left along the

comb edges. The basic nest architecture for all honey bees is

similar: honey is stored in the upper part of the comb; beneath it

are rows of pollen-storage cells, worker-brood cells, and drone-

brood cells, in that order. The peanut-shaped queen cells are

normally built at the lower edge of the comb.

b. Artificial beehives

Artificial beehives serve two purposes: production of honey

and pollination of nearby crops. Artificial hives are commonly

transported so that bees can pollinate crops in other areas. A

number of patents have been issued for beehive designs.

c. Ancient beehives

Honeybees were kept in Egypt from antiquity. On the walls

of the suntemple of NyuserreIni from the 5th Dynasty, before

2422 BC, workers are depicted blowing smoke into hives as they

are removing honeycombs. The symbol of UpperEgypt after the

unification of the north and south is the honey bee, and is used

on the Thronename/Praenomen of all Pharaohs. This designation

was used continuously from the 3rd Dynasty. (circa 2650 BC).

Inscriptions detailing the production of honey are found on the

tomb of Pabasa from the 26th Dynasty (circa 650 BC), depicting

pouring honey in jars and cylindrical hive. Archaeologist

AmihaiMazar, of Jerusalem's HebrewUniversity, said that 30 intact

hives were discovered in the ruins of the city of Rehov (with 2,000

residents in 900 B.C., Israelites and Canaanites). This is evidence

that an advanced honey industry existed in the Holy Land at the

time of the Bible, 3,000 years ago. The beehives, made of straw

and unbaked clay, were found in orderly rows, with a total of 100

hives, many in broken condition. Ezra Marcus, HaifaUniversity,

said the discovery provided a glimpse of ancient beekeeping seen

in texts and ancient art from the NearEast. An altar decorated

with fertility figurines was found alongside the hives and may

indicate religious practices associated with beekeeping. While

beekeeping predates these ruins, this is the oldest apiary yet

discovered.

d. Traditional beehives

Traditional beehives simply provided an enclosure for the

bee colony. Because no internal structures were provided for the

bees, the bees created their own honeycomb within the hives.

The comb is often cross-attached and cannot be moved without

destroying it. This is sometimes called a 'fixed-frame' hive to

differentiate it from the modern 'movable-frame' hives. Harvest

generally destroyed the hives, though there were some

adaptations using extra top baskets which could then be removed

when the bees filled them with honey. These were gradually

supplanted with box hives of varying dimensions, with or without

frames, and finally replaced by newer modern equipment. Honey

from traditional hives was typically extracted by pressing -

crushing the wax honeycomb to squeeze out the honey. Due to

this harvesting, traditional beehives typically provided more

beeswax, but far less honey, than a modern hive. Skeps and

other fixed-frame hives are no longer in wide use (and are illegal

in many countries) because the bees and the comb cannot be

inspected for disease or parasites without destruction of the

honeycomb and usually the colony. There are three basic styles of

traditional beehive; mud hives, clay/tile hives, skeps and bee

gums.

e. Mud and clay hives

Mud hives are still used in Egypt. These are long cylinders

made from a mixture of unbaked mud, straw, and dung.Bees in a

baked clay jar in Malta. Clay tiles were the customary homes of

domesticated bees in the eastern end of the Mediterranean. Long

cylinders of baked clay were used in ancient Egypt, the

Middle.East and to some extent in Greece, Italy and Malta. They

sometimes were used singly, but more often stacked in rows to

provide some shade, at least for those not on top. Keepers would

smoke one end to drive the bees to the other end while they

harvested honey.

2 Kinds of Honey Bee

Kind of honey bee: Flavour and colour of honey depend on the

flowers viited by the bees. Be based on yhe nectar. There some kind of

honey :

a. Alfafa honey

Its taken from Alfafa Violet flower. The colour of honey is bright

with a good smell and the flavour is not to stinging.

b. Blueberry Honey

Its taken from blueberry white flower. And the colour of honey is

brownies with a good flavour. The honey is producted by England

and Michigan.

c. Clover Honey

Its has a good flavour and also the flavour is not too stinging. Its

taken from clover flower. Its has varying clours from bright

water till brownies. The colours of honey depend on the flowers

visited by the bees.

d. Eucalyptus Honey

Those honey has low taster but its has high value because it

can treat tuberculosis illness. The honey is takenfrom many tree

flowering so that it has varying colour and stronger taste.

e. Tyhme Honey

Its taken from thyme plant. The colour is brownies and the

flavour is delicious.

f. Buckwheat and wiid flower

Buckwheat and wiid flower honeys are darker and have stronger

taste.

g. Etc.

3 The Product of Honey Bee

a. Propolis

Propolis is aresinous mixture that honeybees collect from tree

buds, sap flows, or other botanical sources. It is used as a

sealant for unwanted open space in the bee hives. The colour of

propolis is varies depending on its botanical source. The most

common being dark brown. Propolis is sticky when over

temperature and at lower temperatures it becomes hard and

very brittle. Bee propolis is believed to streng than the immune

system. Promote heart and reduce the chanceof chataracts. It is

avaible in various form including propolis capsules, tablets,

tinctures, and lozenges. First a quick recap on bee propolis. This

is a subtance produced by the honey bee and used the seal the

hive against predators and disease. Its made by collecting a

sticky resinous substance collected from the buds and damaged

bark of certain trees and mixing it with wax flakes, pollen and

saliva.

b. Royal Jelly

Another product of the hive is royal jelly, a rich creamy

subtance made by the worker bees and used in the feeding of

the larvae. While the youngsters which are destined to became

worker bees receive royal jelly in combination with other

sources. Its believed that when a new queen is needed. It will

be feed excusively on royal jelly. This is believed to trigger the

mechanism which causes a your bee to develop into a queen.

While many health benefith are claimed of royal jelly, very view

if any have been substantiated by reliable research. It cant be

disputed that this subtance is high in nutrients and for that

reason it is collected an sold as a dietary suplement but some of

the claims of its proponents appear a little over the top. Its also

used in a number of beauty product, but again most of the

supposed benefits are yet to be proven. It also should be noted

that royal jelly can cause asevere reaction in some people and

in extreme but rare cases has apparently been fatal.

c. Bee Pollen

This kis another bee product used in alternative medicine and

sold by some health food stores as a nutrisional suplement.

Because of the high levels of carbohydrate and protein, people

have used it as a source energy among thing. However none of

these claims have yet been substantiated.

Another use Bee Pollen has been put is as a treatement for hay

fever with some people believing that it wild help the body build

up resistance to alergies. One again, this has not yet been

proven. In fact there are concerns that it can cause severe

reaction in those with pollen allergies.

d. Beeswax

It is a natural wax produced in the bee hive of honey bees of

the genus apis. Worker bees have 8 wax producing mirror

glands depend on the age of the worker and after daily fight

begins this glands gradually a thropy. The new wax scales are

intially glass clear and colorless, becoming opaque after

masticationby the worker bee. The wax oof honey comb is

nearly white, but becomes progressively more yellow or brown

by incorporation of pollen oils and propolis. Athe wax scales are

about 3 mm (0.12 in) across and 0.1 mm (0.0039 in) thick, and

about 1100 are recuired to make a gram of wax. Typically, for a

honey bee keeper, 10 pounds of honey yields 1 pounds of wax.

The wax may further be clarified by heating in water and may

then be used for candles or as a lubricant for drawers and

windows or as wood polish. As with petroleom waxes, it may

bee softened by dilution with vegetable oil to make it more

workable at room temperature.

e. Bee Venom

Bee Venom .is a unique product which has been used for

centuries for medicinal purposes. Bee Venom ca treat all illness

as astma, allergy, arteriosclerosis, paralized, aneurysm etc.

E. The Methods of Choosing a Good Honey Bee

Many people are soften still confuse about how to choosing a good

quality honey. When I am navigating through the maze of all the

different honey in the shops, I look out for certain specific information to

ensure that the honey I buy is value for money. If good quality honey

that is of value can be judged by 5 key factors, namely :

1. Water Content

Good quality honey essentially has low water content. Honey is

likely to ferment and lose its freshness if the water content of

honey is greater than 19%. The reason is that all unpasteurized

honey content wild yeasts. Due to the high sugar concentration,

these yeasts will pose little risk in low moisture honey because

osmosis will draw sufficient water from the yeast to force them

into dormacy. In honey that has a higher proportion of water, the

yeast may survive and cause fermentation to begin in storage.

This result an increase of acidity, which then becomes an

important quality criteria.

2. HMF (Hydroxymethylfurfural)

HMF is a break-down product of fructose (one of the main sugars

in honey) formed slowly during storage and very quikly when

honey is heated. The amount of HMF preset in honey is there for

used as a guide to storage length and the amount of heating

which has taken place. HMFs occurrence and accumulation in

honey is variable depending on honey type. High levels of HMF

may indicate excessing heating during the extraction process.

Honey that is traded in a bulkform is usually recuired to be below

10 or 15 mg/ kg to enable further processing and then give some

shelf life before a level of 40 mg/ kg is reached. It is not

uncommon for honey sold in hot climate to be well over 100 mg/

kg in HMF. This is mostly due to the ambient temperatures (over

350 C ) that honey is exposed to in the distribution channel. Some

countries set an HMF limit for imported honey. You may also want

to note the colour of honey as it can sometimes be an indicator of

quality because honey becomes darker during storage and

heating.

3. Invested Sugar

High level of HMF (greater than 100 mg/ kg ) can also be an

indicator of adulturation with inverted sugars. Cane sugar or

sucrose is inverted by heating with a food item sweetened with

high fructose corn syrups.eg. carbonated sof drinks, can have of

HMF up to 1000 mg

4. Impurities

For most consumers, good quality honey is expected to be

visually free of defect clean and clear. Honey which has a very

high pollen content appears cloudy, and the presence of many

other contaminations such as particles of wax bees, splinters of

wood and dust certainly does make it look unappetising for

anyone to buy and consume and hence it appears as if its of very

low value. Unfortunatelly, no matter how much food value or

health benefiths some of these particles like pollen can offer, this

kind of honey is hard to be associated with good quality honey

and is immediatelly rejected by most consumers at the

supermart. And this explains why its almost impossible to find

unfiltered raw honeyon the shelf. Its cloudy appearance make

them commercially unattractive.

5. Colour

Honey is colour graded into light, amber and dark categories

which do not really have any bearing or quality. Some of the most

distinctively and stongly flavored honey varieties, such as bass

wood are very light, while very mild and pleasant honey such as

tulip plopar can be quite dark. Honey colour is measured on the

fund scale in millimeters. While it is not in indicator of honey

quality and there are exceptions to the rule, generaly speaking,

the darker colour and honey. The higher its mineral contents, the

PH reading, and the aroma / flavour levels, minerals such as

potassium, chlorine, sulfur iron manganese, magnesium and

sodium have been found to be much higher in darker honeys.

CHAPTER IV

THE ADVANTAGE OF HONEY BEE AS A GOOD NATURAL MEDICINE

A. The Advantage of Prevent from diseases

1. Anti-diarrheal properties

At a concentration of 40 percent, honey has a bactericidal effect

on various intestinal bacteria known to cause diarrhea and

dysentery such as Salmonella, Shigella and enteric pathogens like

E. coli and Vibrio cholera. In one study, honey given with oral

dehydration fluid was shown to reduce the duration of bacterial

diarrhea in infants and children.

2. Anti-tissive and Expectoratit Properties

Honeys anti-cough properties are related to its capacity to dilute

bronchial secretions and improve function of the bronchial

epithelium. Uncontaminated or pure honey is a natural, healthy,

energy-rich and easily-digestible food. Observation of treatment

for lung abscesses in professor F. A. Udintsevs clinic at the Kiev

Medical Institute has drawn attention.

Three patients were given 100 to 150 grams of honey a day,

hemoglobin increased, while the erythrocyte sedimentation rate

(ESR) decreased. Patients coughed less and the amount of

sputum decreased; they began urinating more during the day

than at night (the opposite was the case before honey was

given); and a beneficial effect also was noted on the

gastrointestinal tract.

3. Anti Bacterial and Anti Fungal Properties

These are well-established properties of honey. Undiluted honey

painless and the serum glucose remained in excellent control.
