Imagine an inexpensive device that allows you to set an alarm on your smart phone

that will automatically turn on your coffee pot in the morning, or turn off the lights when you leave the house to save energy. That device may become a reality with the launch of a com-pany named brightblu, founded by Menlo Park native Taylor Umphreys, and based on the idea of affordable, customizable home automation. “We wanted to bring home automation to the greater mar-ket,” Mr. Umphreys explains. “So we decided to make a really cheap, affordable smart plug that you can plug into any device — a lamp, appliance, TV, whatever it may be — and give you control of that device through your smartphone.” Mr. Umphreys, 21, born and raised in Menlo Park, traces his interest in the world of electrical

nesses in all-things-Silicon Val-ley with workshops, mentorship sessions, product-development instruction, initial funding and crucial exposure to investor connections. The company is intertwined with Plug and Play: It is based out of the Sunnyvale headquarters of Plug and Play, which also provided brightblu’s initial funding.

Home automation The traditional con-cept of home auto-mation is restrictive and expensive, Mr. Umphreys says. “Home automa-tion nowadays is full-blown systems you have to install that are incredibly confus-ing and really propri-etary,” he says. “And pretty much only the top 2 per-cent of people in wealth actually have the disposable income to buy these things.” Brightblu strives to break with this mold in three ways. The first is with the company’s product, a home automation plug called the “Otto,” for home “Ottomation.” Users can plug the Otto, which is about the size of an iPhone charger plug, into a device, such as a lamp or a household appliance, and control the device from their smartphone. What about people who don’t own smartphones? The plug is compatible with any device that comes with a Bluetooth compo-nent, such as a computer or an

iPad, says Mr. Umphreys. The second is cost: the plug itself will cost between $30 and $50, says marketing vice president Michael Olmstead. It would cost anywhere from $250 to $500 to outfit your entire house, compared to home-automation options that cost up to $10,000 to set up an entire house.

The third way that brightblu hopes to expand the world of home automation: an open-source app store where develop-ers have the access and freedom to cre-ate any application with the brightblu hardware. “Pretty much anything that a developer can put their mind to, they can code in an app and add it to our app store,” says Mr.

Umphreys. “This expands way beyond what home automation is today.” In preparation for launching this year, Mr. Umphreys says the brightblu team is currently working on honing the plug’s functions, making it “better and smaller,” as well as develop-ing the app store and doing an investor round with friends and family. The company’s name is a wordplay on lighting, technolo-gy, and being different: “blu” derives from the company’s use of Bluetooth technology, but they dropped the “e” to “set themselves apart,” said Mr. Olmstead, 21, also a Menlo Park native. Fifth-grade students with Trinity Elementary School in Menlo Park recently presented a “Heart of Trinity Award” and $100 to each of

five community service organizations. As graduating fifth-graders, the students split into five groups. Each group agreed on an orga-nization to support, often based on the students ‘ volunteer experience. Trinity students participate in community service projects throughout their time at the school, from working at homeless shelters to helping animals, according to school spokesperson Cindy Tipton. Organizations chosen by this year’s class were: Save the Bay, Habitat for Humanity, East Palo Alto YMCA, World Wildlife Fund, and Invisible Children. This “program gives them (the students) a tan-gible way to provide help,” says fifth-grade teach-er Kathy Hoekenga. A

While many local youth use the sum-mer break as an

opportunity to catch up on sleep and watch endless hours of television, Rebecca Shoch, 14, of Woodside chose to use her new free time for some-thing other than sitting on the couch. Being a big fan of Emily Joubert, a store in Woodside that sells home and garden products, she decided to take a chance on an available internship there that piqued her interest. The application process involved talking to the man-ager about her interests so her potential employer could get “a taste of her personality.” She landed the job, which includes helping with gift-

wrapping, putting together flower arrangements, and organizing the shelves. The intern-ship has given her a sense what it’s like to be in a workplace environment. The most use-ful skill she has picked up is the ability to commu-nicate with different types of people, she says. In addition to work at Emily Joubert, Rebecca’s summer activities include attending local dance and tennis camps. The highlight of her summer, however, will be a family trip

to England and Ireland. Rebecca says it’s important for young people to travel to “get a taste of what other cultures are like and gain new insights and ideas.” She looks forward to London, where she plans to take a tour of the recently opened Harry Potter Studios and attend the Olym-pics. “The Olympics are so amazing because everyone in the world is coming together on an international level for a common reason,” she says. In Ireland, she plans to relax and enjoy views of some of the most gorgeous land-scapes in the world. Here’s wishing Rebecca and all other Almanac readers a wonderful summer. A

St. Bedes Episcopal Church in Menlo Park won a BizSMART@Work Award this year for exem-plary recycling and composting practices. The award “recognizes busi-nesses and multi-family com-plexes in the RethinkWaste ser-vice area (San Mateo County) for their recycling and com-posting efforts,” said Monica Devincenzi, recycling outreach manager at RethinkWaste, in an email. After the church hosted a speaker from Recology, the trash-collection company, church members decided to compost “aggressively” and increase recycling, said Jeanne Cooper, the youth and young adult coordinator. Then Carol Shedlock, the parish adminis-

trator, truly implemented the church’s green program, accord-ing to Ms. Cooper. Because the church serves as a school during the week, hosts many regular AA meetings, and holds two daily services as well as a variety of other eve-ning events, many meals a day are eaten and papers used on its grounds. It therefore had the opportunity to “divert an enormous amount of material,” helping it win the award and make its goal, said Ms. Cooper. The church has set a goal to buy only compostable napkins and coffee cups, etc., and cut down on usage. Ms. Cooper says she promotes “finger foods” and other snacks that do not involve unnecessary waste.

I sometimes think about how sad it is that most of our pet dogs, bred for generations

to do specific work — hunting, herding, guarding, rodent-kill-ing — do not have jobs. It is probably my intelligent, hyper-active, keen-nosed Labrador retriever who makes me think this. He comes from a breeder whose dogs are hunt-ers and rescue dogs. Their website shows a beautiful lab harnessed to a climber’s belay rope. Alas, poor Wheeler (so named because his color is exactly the same as that of my favorite Wheeler Farms com-post) has no job. Instead, he devotes his brains and muscles and nose and fierce determina-tion to a rubber ball that he carries with him on his daily four-mile walks. He manages to convey with exquisite non-verbal cues to his companions

and passers-by that they must throw the ball. During the day Wheeler usually hangs out near our gate, which has a gap near the ground that one of the dozens of tennis balls that have some-how ended up in our yard will just fit under. When someone passes by, especially those who have learned his routine, he rolls the ball under the gate and waits for them to throw it back over the fence. I have noticed quite a few people slipping him dog treats through the wire gate. In the evenings, when Wheel-er’s favorite spot is curled up on the ottoman in front of my chair with head nudging ever closer to my lap, everyone takes great pleasure in trying to hide his ball from him. He always finds it. The number of people who give in to the non-verbal pleas to throw the ball in the house are apparent in the fact that there is, at this moment, more than one round ball mark on the window that needs to be washed off.

Recently, however, Wheeler proved he does have a job. We have several quite old hens in our coop who quit lay-ing eggs years ago. I can’t really

remember how old they are, but our youngest daughter, who just turned 21, got them when she was in 4-H so they are at least 10 years old.

One has been having some trouble walking lately and spends most of her time, when it’s not raining, basking in the sun. I suspect she doesn’t always make it into the coop at night, either, since once or twice I’ve noticed her outside and put her in before locking the door. Apparently she didn’t make it in yesterday. During the night a terrible fuss was heard, fol-lowed by barking. This morn-ing, the old black hen appeared at the back door, with a large handful of feathers gone from her back. Wheeler, it seems, responded to the fuss she raised when the raccoon, or whatever predator it was, grabbed her. He chased it off. A disconcertingly large pile of feathers is next to the coop and the old black hen is again lying in the sun. Wheeler, it seems, does have a job. He’s a bird dog, just not the traditional kind.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the exis-tence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this

information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the prop-erty.
