parent Anne Schoebel emceed the parade again this year. Several Woodside-based groups involving horses added a hometown touch. Mounted Patrol members wore uniforms and carried f lags, Woodside Vaulters showcased a handsome gray horse used in competition, and the National Center of Equine Facilitated Therapy led a miniature horse wearing a hot pink punk rocker wig. The Royal Court, made up of kindergarteners dressed in crowns and robes, rode in an antique fire truck with an entourage of students walking behind. The shiny red Engine 7 driven by the Woodside Fire Protec-tion District firefighters looked brand new by comparison, whereas the Menlo Park Fire-

men’s Association red engine carrying the Woodside High School Alumni Association members looked to be some-where in between. The Woodside High Marching Band played a number of tunes, with the school’s top award-winning dance team performing right behind them. More music followed when Woodside School’s eighth-grad-ers showed up in costume to sing two songs from the operetta, “Annie,” that they will be putting on June 2, 3 and 4. Eleven young girls twirled batons to taped music. Laura and Yolanda Russell, the mother/daughter team that runs the Redwood City Twirlers, say they have participated in this parade at least 19 times. Their nephew/grandson, Jeffrey Russell, played saxophone in the Woodside High Marching Band, just like his uncles did in past May Day

parades. The Los Trancos Woods Com-munity Marching Band made its annual appearance with its usual cast of raggle-taggle colorful characters. Leader and trombone player Jim Harvey of Menlo Park said the group has paraded down Woodside Road probably 40 to 45 times. Farther back in the lineup, the Peninsula Volunteers featured The 515 Band playing rock-and-roll music on the back of a truck. Newcomers this year included a Rockstar energy drink truck accompanied by loud music and student dancers to help advertise the upcoming Wood-side School Foundation’s Grand Auction on May 21, “Rockstar.” The Rockstar company is a community partner that has donated to the foundation. Silicon Valley, which had cars in the parade. Jeannette Heidrich came to watch with her husband and dog. “We’re local residents and we love coming to the parade, and have been for over 20 years since our children were younger.” Three generations of the Mar-tin family of Woodside stood in one spot for the hour-long procession, clearly enjoying the other main source of enter-tainment — running into a stream of old friends. Standing with her parents, husband, and 8-month-old daughter, Wood-side School alum Lisa Martin Murray beamed, “We’re just out to have fun outside.” Afterward, many people walked over to the school to see the third-graders perform a Maypole dance, and then stayed for food and games. Heather Green named ‘Citizen of Year’

At a ceremony held in the amphitheatre fol-lowing the May Day

Parade, Woodside School’s PTA recognized Heather Green as “Citizen of the Year” for all her volunteer efforts. Mrs. Green lives in Wood-side and has two children at the school. For the past eight years she has run the recycling program on cam-pus, collecting, sorting and cashing in bottles and cans to raise money for the music department. She has helped in class-rooms, and supported the choir by sewing and cleaning its robes, and chaperoning field trips.

Serving on the Wood-side School F o u n d a -tion board for several years, she is currently the secre-tary. Foun-

dation president Sheree Shoch praised Ms. Green “for always doing behind-the-scenes work; she’s an unsung hero.” The PTA presented Ms. Green with a rose tree, sym-bolic of her ecological volun-teerism at the school.

Locals capture honors at Tech ChallengeSubmitted by Shari Conrad, a parent volunteer for Encinal School

A team of fifth-graders from Encinal School won second place for overall

solution in a field of fifth- and six-graders at the 2011 Tech Chal-lenge, held at the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose on April 30. The challenge was to design and build a system to pick up plastic bottles from the ocean without harming fish and kelp. The three Encinal students worked for three months, creat-ing a solution using materials such as a PVC pipe, vacuum tubing, duct tape, recycled card-board, a reusable shopping bag and a handheld vacuum. “It was really cool to try out lots of ideas and then narrow in on the best ones,” said team member Alexander Takayama. Team member Aidan McKay added, “We learned a lot about the engineering design process.” On the day of the competition, the boys presented their solution and shared their design journal with a team of judges.

In addition, they had five min-utes to show their machine in action. Two minutes were allowed for setup, followed by three min-utes to collect two 2-liter bottles and three bottle caps. The device met the design challenge and beat their best practice time by over 45 seconds. The challenge drew a record

number of participants: 263 teams and more than 1,200 stu-dents. “Three heads are better than one,” observed team member Kyle Conrad, “You can come up with a much better solution working with a team.” Visit thetech.org for more information. A
