Sarah Mummah is beyond doubt a determined woman. She recalls that as a Stanford

student, when a professor was dis-cussing disparities in education and health between affluent people and the poor, she demanded: “What can I do about this? Why isn’t any-one doing something about this? It shouldn’t be that hard.” “I was so naive,” the 23-year-old Atherton resident acknowledges over a latte and fruit cup at Cafe Borrone during a recent interview with the Almanac. Naive or not, Ms. Mummah found herself unable to stop gnaw-ing on the basic questions raised during that discussion. But instead of asking why someone else wasn’t doing something about the prob-lem, she focused on the first ques-tion — what could she do to cor-rect the troublesome disparities?

Throughout her years at Stan-ford, where she earned a degree with honors in human biology, she explored ways to change what she perceived as an unnecessary con-dition among disadvantaged kids that made success and good health as adults much less likely than they were for their privileged peers. And in 2008, while still a student, she founded DreamCatchers, a non-profit serving low-income middle school students — now including high school students — in the areas of academics and health. A cornerstone of the Dream-Catchers’ program is one-on-one tutoring with a Stanford student who stays with the younger stu-dent for an entire academic year, Ms. Mummah explains. “So they get tailor-made academic support and mentorship, and they get in the loop for a college path.” The program includes a health com-ponent, and offers a weekly cook-

ing class that focuses on healthful foods. What started as a temporary summer project with Stanford volunteers teaching and mentor-ing kids is now an established, award-winning program based in Palo Alto — and was likely to have been among the credentials that stood out for the panel of applicant reviewers who recently chose Ms. Mummah as one of 40 Americans named 2012 Gates Cambridge Scholars. The Gates scholarship pays all expenses for Ms. Mummah’s stud-ies at Cambridge University, where she plans to work on a master’s degree in public health, research-ing approaches to changing behav-ior that impacts health.

Epiphany Ms. Mummah’s education in human biology at Stanford was bolstered, sometimes joltingly, by

the education she received through direct experience in the field of human motivation. During her early student days, she volunteered with the group Students for Healthy Youth, work-ing with fifth-graders at a school with many low-income kids. One day, she asked the kids to raise their hands if someone in their family had diabetes, which led to a dis-cussion of how poor eating habits might lead to the now-epidemic disease. But eventually, she realized that talking about the problem wasn’t enough. What good was talk, she asked herself, when she knew deep down that the kids would be heading straight from the class-room to “their hot Cheetos and ice cream.” “It did not take me long to understand: It’s not just telling

people what to eat and what not to eat,” she says. “Ever since, I’ve become very interested in crack-ing the puzzle.” And one conclusion she’s come to: “Sometimes a ‘stealth motive’ is needed” — a strategy to get peo-ple involved in enjoyable activities that would, by their nature, keep the participants fit and healthy. In that way, she realized, people might be nudged rather than nagged toward good health.

Building a model In developing and administer-ing her nonprofit, DreamCatch-ers, Ms. Mummah builds upon research that shows that programs focusing on multiple areas are more effective than single-focus programs. Academics and good health seemed the logical combi-nation for a program whose goal is to prepare disadvantaged kids for a successful future. In a recent report, the nonprofit Action for Healthy Kids cites research showing “a direct link between nutritional intake and academic performance, as well as between physical activity and academic achievement.” DreamCatchers’ weekly fam-ily cooking class is open to its students as well as their siblings, friends, parents and tutors. “We use fresh ingredients to create fast, economical and nutritious meals

that families can easily recreate at home,” according to the Dream-Catcher website. The program also sends the families home with complimentary ingredients to prepare in their own kitchens. Other health-related elements of the program: DreamCatchers provides after-school snacks to its participants, and Ms. Mummah says the organization is coordi-nating with the Palo Alto Family YMCA, which already provides classroom space for the organiza-tion, “to explore how we can work together to promote physical activity among our families.” The organization’s annual eval-uation report for the last academic year, based on surveys taken at the beginning and end of the year, states that “average grades across students and courses improved,” particularly in math. “Gains in habits were moderate, with about half of students reporting use of comprehensive reading habits regularly.” Ms. Mummah emphasizes that DreamCatchers offers benefits not only for the low-income stu-dents it serves, but for the univer-sity volunteers who work with the program. The positive synergy has boosted her hopes that the model created through Dream-Catchers will catch on in other communities to help underserved kids. “I believe an exciting strength of our work is that our model is

highly cost-effective (through the extensive in-kind resources and support we receive) and highly replicable across the country (through partnerships with other universities across the country and their neighboring communi-ties),” she says in an email. Such replication would not only help a far wider community of low-income middle and high school kids, “but also inspire and help equip a larger community of college students to make a differ-ence in public health and educa-tion,” she says. With an eye toward expansion and sustainability, the organiza-tion will be boosting its fundrais-ing efforts, Ms. Mummah said. It is now supported by numerous sources that include nonprof-its, businesses, and individual donors. Although Cambridge calls — the scholarship is effective the next academic year — Ms. Mum-mah has asked for a one-year deferment so that she can be here to shepherd DreamCatch-ers through its current efforts to expand its reach. “It’s really taking off now, and I want to be around for it,” Ms. Mummah says.

Future study When she does arrive on the Cambridge campus, Ms. Mum-mah says she will continue to research “stealth” and other strat-egies to improve public health. In her Gates Cambridge Scholar application, she wrote about her experiences as a public health researcher in Oaxaca, Mexico, in

2010-11. “In the indigenous com-munity of San Andres Zautla, I met a traveling dance troupe of elderly women,” she wrote. “Although they had initially formed the group to reclaim their indigenous heritage, in time, they had come to value the strength and physical vitality that danc-ing and exercise gave their bod-ies. These women unknowingly embodied a new approach at the forefront of the field that I had studied at Stanford: a ‘stealth’ intervention, grounded in behav-ior-change theories that engage people in healthy behaviors using

motivations apart from health.” Through her work, she said in the application, she would “cham-pion a new approach to obesity prevention exemplified by these women, by building a series of highly effective health-behavior change interventions designed to usher in a paradigm shift in the way we tackle our obesity crisis, both domestically and abroad.” Ms. Mummah is the daughter of Dr. Ana Mummah of Atherton and Phil Mummah of Palo Alto. Music celebrating nature featured in concert benefiting children’s library The Picasso Ensemble will per-form a concert of music ranging from the Baroque to the present to benefit a children’s library in Nicaragua on Thursday, April 26, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of Bethany Lutheran Church in Menlo Park. The ensemble features Menlo Park pianist Josephine Gandolfi, violinist Susan C. Brown, cel-list Victoria Ehrlich, and mezzo soprano Wendy Hillhouse. Proceeds will benefit the Chil-dren’s Library of Pueblo Nuevo, Nicaragua, a library founded 12 years ago by Peninsula teacher Kristina Mundera and sustained by the local nonprofit group ABREN, Friends of the Library. The program features music based on themes celebrating nature and care of the Earth. It includes a work by Handel rep-resenting nature’s peace, one by Turina “chronicling the unfold-ing of a day as the sun makes its way across the sky,” and Ravel’s “Mother Goose Suite,” a “musi-cal re-telling of fairy tales set in

enchanted forest and garden,” says Ms. Gandolfi. Contemporary works include pieces by Henry Cowell, who was born and raised in West Menlo Park; Karen Linford, choral con-ductor and composer on faculty at Menlo School; and Bay Area composer D’Arcy Reynolds. Ms. Linford’s songs are based on texts in Spanish written by elementary school children at the Castro School in Mountain View. “Complementing the educa-tional Earth Day activities for the young children of the Littlest Angels Pre-School at Bethany the previous week, the concert is geared for adult listeners and older teens, and will have an Earth Day theme,” Ms. Gandolfi notes. The beneficiary of the concert, the children’s library in Nica-ragua, was the realization of a dream of Ms. Mundera, who lived in Pueblo Nuevo as a Peace Corps volunteer, working with neighborhood youth. Witness-

ing the enthusiasm of children in that town for a small collection of children’s books that she brought to her post, she and the com-munity began exploring ways to build a library for kids. Ms. Mundera, family and friends in the United States ral-lied together to raise money for construction materials, and construction began in 2001, “the entire process fueled by volunteer work of local families — children and adults alike,” Ms. Gandolfi says. The library programs serves between 80 and 120 youth daily, “many of whom come from remote communities to take advantage of the library’s resourc-es,” she says. Admission is by donation, sug-gested at $20 general, and $10 for students. Bethany Lutheran Church is at 1095 Cloud Ave. in Menlo Park. Entrance to parking is off Avy Avenue. Broken hearts, boyfriends, otherworldly bridges and bands are just some of

the topics up for discussion at the Kepler’s “YA Extravaganza,” a celebration of young-adult literature to be held April 18 at the Menlo Park bookstore. The 7 p.m. event will feature a panel conversation with tour-ing authors Gayle Forman, Jess Rothenberg, Nina LaCour and Stephanie Perkins. Palo Alto writer Heidi Kling will moderate. The author of the 2010 YA novel “SEA” and a contributor to local e-book publisher Coliloquy, she said she’s thrilled to be guiding the discussion among “four of the most popular contemporary YA authors around.” There will be plenty of time for questions from the audience, and “a little birdie told me there will be games,” she said. How to define YA fiction? It’s very eclectic, including every-thing from realism to paranor-mal romance to dystopian sci-fi, according to Kepler’s event coor-dinator Angela Mann, who blogs and reviews YA novels for the store at thebookbind.blogspot.com. But though its subject matter varies, good YA literature has the adoles-

cent experience at its heart. “YA is generally written from the point of view of young people. And these days, the best of YA is insanely innovative, gor-geously written, funny, moving, terrifying,” author Forman said. The novels also often tackle controversial and provocative topics and can be extremely popular among adult readers as well, Mann noted. Writing YA fiction is appeal-ing because of the combination of “innocence and fierce deter-mination of youth,” Kling said. “Without the adult constraints of bills, raising children, 9-5 jobs, our characters have so much freedom. As a writer, (one finds that) the YA sky is limit-less.” East Bay native Nina LaCour always planned on being a writer, but it wasn’t until tak-

ing a graduate class in young literature at Mills College in Oakland that she decided to try her hand at writing for teens. She wrote her first novel, “Hold Still,” as her thesis and never looked back. LaCour also works directly with teens in her day job as a high-school English teacher, with her students giving her insights into adolescent culture and inspiring her further. Her newest book, “The Disen-chantments,” centers on a group of San Francisco friends and bandmates on a bare-bones tour of the Pacific Northwest follow-ing high-school graduation. “My first novel was very seri-ous, dealing with a best friend’s suicide, so I was ready to write something more fun,” she said of the novel, which finds its main character betrayed by his BFF and struggling to decide

what to do with his life post-tour. Because YA fiction usually fea-tures protagonists on the verge of adulthood, the exhilaration of new experiences is often a com-mon thread, she said. “There’s something about road trips that encapsulate what it means to grow up and be independent.” Forman, the author of the tearjerker “If I Stay” and its sequel “Where She Went,” said she’s always written for and about young people. Though as a former journalist (including a stint as a senior writer for Seven-teen Magazine), she didn’t turn to fiction until after the birth of her first child. YA was a natural fit. “Those have always been the stories that have spoken to me,” she said. Jess Rothenberg, too, has long felt a connection to teen litera-

ture. “I never stopped loving books written for a young audience. I have so many memories tied to great books and the joy of read-ing,” she said. A full-time writer now, Roth-enberg worked for six years as an editor of YA and middle-reader fiction, included the popular “Vampire Academy” series. Since she began working in publishing, “I always hoped I would end up in that realm,” she said, calling it a “fascinating mar-ket,” with many opportunities for writers in the wake of the Harry Potter-era of YA successes with both young and adult readers. Though she’s a Brooklyn resi-dent, Rothenberg is a big Bay Area fan. Her debut novel, “The Catastrophic History of You and Me,” is even set on the Peninsu-la, with the Golden Gate Bridge serving as a gateway to the great beyond. “San Francisco is one of my favorite cities in the world,” she said. “I dream about living there, but my family would kill me because it’s too far away.” In her book, the teen protago-nist literally dies of a broken heart after her boyfriend tells

She then must navigate the world of the afterlife (with the help of a hunky guide) while observing her friends and family struggle with grief over her death. “It’s a big mix of sad and funny, light and dark, with a supernatural spin,” Rothen-berg said. The novel’s plot was inspired partly by her own past relationship woes. “I was in the midst of a broken heart and I started writing this to sort of write my way through those emotions, those grief stages,” she said. For Rothenberg, “the coolest thing about this whole experi-ence” has been the response from fans. “It’s been amazing getting so many emails from all over the world,” she said, from readers who relate to the heartache and emotions expressed by her char-acters. Rothenberg said readers have written messages telling her: “I’m going through these things, too,” and “I hugged your book; it helped me through.”She’s currently working on a second book for teens, but said she hasn’t ruled out writing other types of books in the future. “I just want to follow the story.” A

At Kepler’sAuthor Anne Lamott, with her son Sam, will discuss and sign her latest book, “Some Assembly Required: A Journal of My Son’s First Son,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, at Kepler’s, 1010 El Camino Real in Menlo Park. In “Some Assembly Required,” Ms. Lamott and her son tell about the impact on their lives when Sam became a father at the age of 19.

The Menlo Park Chorus will present a varied program span-ning four centuries of music in a “Choral Mosaic,” a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 330 Ravenswood Ave. in Menlo Park. The city-sponsored chorus performs with its director, April McNeely, and accompa-nist John Iosefa.

“Our pieces are unusually diverse, yet they all fit togeth-er,” says director McNeely. “Gershwin, Mozart, Bernstein, and many more — they all form something of a mosaic.” Refreshments will be served after the performance. Tickets at the door are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors and students, and free for children under 12.
